"Always use a secure connection when logged in"

edit

When was the preference "Always use a secure connection when logged in" removed? There was no more http Wikipedia as of June 12, 2015. GeoffreyT2000 (talk) 00:03, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a reason you want a better answer than "Probably around the same time"? It was removed from Help:Preferences quite recently [1] so that doesn't say much. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:07, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a reason for the question besides pure curiosity? Tiggerjay (talk) 19:00, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone please fix the John Updike article?

edit

32.218.34.233 (talk) 01:20, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for reporting this. It was due to vandalism of Template:Guardiantopic. —teb728 t c 01:43, 15 December 2015 (UTC) I reverted the vandalism and refreshed the John Updike page. Is there bot to refresh the other pages that transclude the template? —teb728 t c 01:48, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I logged out and tested ten random articles transcluding the template and none of them displayed the error. Jalexander-WMF recently said about similar vandalism by the same person at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#vandalism I can't seem to fix: "We are running a cache clearing script (created for a similar attack a while back) as I type to try and fix that issue". PrimeHunter (talk) 02:01, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: FYI, there is masspurge script, that could be useful, if there isn't thousands of transclusions. --Edgars2007 (talk/contribs) 06:27, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Donald Trump Article

edit

Donald Trump article has been hacked. Please help. Juve2000 (talk) 01:46, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed by same template edit as above. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:03, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Please fix up ref. number 3 on this page. Thanks Srbernadette (talk) 03:03, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The reference had the url repeated as the title; hence the 'external link in title' error message. However it appeared to be to a forum and therefore of little if any use. Two other refs. at same point so removed the error producing one. Eagleash (talk) 03:13, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Again a reminder that when the word "help" in the error message is shown in blue it means that it is a wikilink. In this case the link goes to Help:CS1 errors#param has ext link. Was there something about that part of the help page that wasn't clear enough? --David Biddulph (talk) 05:59, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps the OP didn't click on it — it can be quite easily overlooked when an editor is relatively new. Eagleash (talk) 13:36, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

On the Wiki Page "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kochi", which is about Kochi, the URL directing to Sunrise Hospital is not the one located in Kochi. It is a hospital located in Nevada, United States. Please direct the domain to "http://www.sunrisehospitalcochin.com/". This is the correct domain of Sunrise Hospital located in Kochi/Cochin. Please review. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tina.ann11 (talkcontribs) 06:09, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Done - Thank you for pointing that out. I have changed the Wiki-link to "Sunrise Hospital (India)" for now. If enough reliable sources about this hospital exist, interested editors can create an article for it on that page (and a disambiguation, if necessary). Hi, I can't see any interwiki links on the Thor Heyerdahl article (under languages on the LHS)...Is it just me ? Thanks GrahamHardy (talk) 08:12, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@GrahamHardy: No, I didn't see any either, but they re-appeared when I purged the page. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:22, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good now, Thanks GrahamHardy (talk) 09:18, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Problem on navigating Wikipedia

edit

Sometimes I use Wikipedia on my iPhone 5S updated to iOS 9.2 and since few days I must touch 2 times the wikilink for enter in... with various other sites I don't have this problem, it is sufficient to touch 1 times the link, but only on Wikipedia I have this problem... what can I do to solve? --Marce79 (talk) 10:17, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I just tested on an 5s and 6 without issue on both the built in Safari Browser, as well as Chrome. However I have seen this in the past and what I recall the issue being was that if the page wasn't done loading yet (ie you could see content, but it wasn't 100% done loading) then it would give the sense that it took two clicks to follow a link. Hope that helps. Tiggerjay (talk) 18:58, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This evening I was on my iPad and discovered that if you used the 'desktop mode' in safari it does require two clicks to enter any link. However if you use the "mobile site" it only requires one. Try giving the mobile friendly site a try. Safari should automatically go there, but if it doesn't you can manually do it by using a link on the bottom of any page. Hello. I just added a new sub-heading in the Greenpeace's page and it was deleted due copyright. The information I added came from an assignment that I had to do about "Sustainability in tech companies" where I found information in the original magazine, but every single word was said by my own, nothing printed.

This is what I added:

Cool IT Leaderboard

In May 2009, Greenpeace started evaluating IT companies through Cool IT Leaderboard. The central role these companies are playing gives the opportunity to drive changes in the energy sector and achieve a significant reduction in the greenhouse gases that cause the climate change.

The Leaderboard examines how the leading IT companies can use their influence to drive these changes, which in the 6th edition the sector shows slow but steady improvements in offering new solution that may achieve important progress. There are companies willing to make major investments to drive clean energy deployment and the number of companies that are increasing their commitment, betting for renewable energies, is also growing.

However, the lack of leadership in demanding the policy changes for companies’ investments in a cleaner energy and technology allows some utility monopolies15 to remain committed to polluting using coal or nuclear power. Those monopolies are also supporters to right-wing groups16 which are one of the biggest political obstacles to a transition to a renewable energy and economy.

The important role of IT companies can allow them to act take the leadership and as a backbone of the modern energy infrastructure to combat those monopolies. Big companies such as Google, Wipro, Sprint and Softbank have prioritized changing the laws and policies that govern the energy system and incentivise investments in advanced energy efficiency technologies and renewable energy that will have a critical impact in many countries to determine a meaningful break in energy policies.

In the Leaderboard we can find one main ranking with the overall scores and another three rankings for each one of the evaluated areas where we can find the top companies contributing in each.

Could you tell me what part seems to be copyrighted and how should I change it in order to make a legal edition in the page?

If you could help me I'd be really grateful as I'd like to add something similar for "Guide to Greener Electronics". Uriign (talk) 11:24, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like very close paraphrasing to me. (@Materialscientist: ping). Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 11:44, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Need for 'Galby' Disambig page & Primary Topic

edit

I just tried to find info on the Leicestershire village that is known as either Gaulby or Galby using the latter spelling and found myself instead taken to List of Inheritance Cycle characters which seems to be about the Eragon (film). 'Galby' is not even mentioned on this page but I guess it is short for 'Galbatorix'?

=> To say that the primary Galby topic is List of Inheritance Cycle characters seems tenuous to say the least to me. Judging by google the top two uses for 'Galby' are:

  • the village Gaulby
  • the surname Galby (probably derived from the village name)

Am I missing something about the Eragon film and the word Galby? If not I would like to create a 'Galby (disambig)' page and set either the village or the disambig page to be primary topic.

What do others think? Does this sound reasonable? Sliven2000 (talk) 13:15, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds entirely reasonable. Proceed. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 13:22, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've changed the Galby page to be a disambig page now. I guess if anyone can come up with an overwhelming reason why the Eragon film character is primary we can change it back easier enough.. Sliven2000 (talk) 13:50, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I donated by check and it was cashed. No place to indicate that we have donated

edit

I donated by check and it was cashed. No place to indicate that we have donated, and I cannot do a wiki search without being harassed several times about donating.[1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.106.225.241 (talk) 17:21, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

See: Wikipedia:Why create an account? Mlpearc (open channel) 17:32, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The donation banner should have an X to remove it in the upper right corner, but the effect may depend on your browser. Registered users have the option "Suppress display of fundraiser banners" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:41, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Also thank you for donating! Tiggerjay (talk) 18:33, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Have your own wikipedia page

edit

Hello, I was just wondering how or what you got to do to have your own wikipedia page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by YRBFilms (talkcontribs) 18:35, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@YRBFilms: See Wikipedia:Notability (people). PrimeHunter (talk) 18:41, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Also, read the guideline on autobiographies if you are considering writing your own article. Robert McClenon (talk) 18:48, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Please capitalize scott and campbell on the new Jason Scott Campbell page. Please and Thank you. Take care.

I appreciate your attention to this matter. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Beanonym (talkcontribs) 19:04, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see a page with that name. Please let me know the full name/url.Naraht (talk) 19:11, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Naraht, try Jason scott campbell which was deleted (quite correctly, after checking the deleted version of the article) for not containing a credible claim of importance or significant (WP:CSD#A7). It also had no sources at all. BencherliteTalk 19:14, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The page has been deleted as A7 Mlpearc (open channel) 19:15, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. Not sure why I didn't see the deleted notice. I see it now.Naraht (talk) 19:17, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's reappeared at Jason Scott Campbell which I have deleted for A7 and copyvio, and warned the user. The uncredited IMDB source of which it was a copyvio is an unfunny work of fiction. BencherliteTalk 19:24, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

what does to have "references in line" mean

edit

I was told I need to have "my references in line" in my article for it to be approved, but now sure what this means exactlyNicoletinamuj (talk) 19:33, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Is this about Draft:Robert J. Vinson? You have all your references listed at the bottom but you need the references at the ends of the statements that they support. See WP:REFB. Dismas|(talk) 19:36, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

digital not-for-free publications

edit

I can read on Wikipedia:Verifiability: Source material must have been published, the definition of which for our purposes is "made available to the public in some form"; this includes material such as documents in publicly accessible archives, inscriptions on monuments, gravestones, etc., that are available for anyone to see., which include also printed book or other papery publications that are available if you buy it: they're available for anyone who are willing to pay in order to read them. So I think an on-line archive, database or publications could be used as Wikipedia source even when you'll have to pay a fee or you must sign up to a site if you want to consult them, as long as the chance to pay or register himself is open to anyone who want. Is my gess right, or not? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.57.251.133 (talk) 22:38, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, your guess is correct. Such links shouldn't appear in an "External links" section (see WP:ELNO #6), but using material that requires registration or is behind a paywall as a reference is quite acceptable. Deor (talk) 22:57, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your prompt answer, Deor! 93.57.251.133 (talk) 23:38, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

editing references

edit

I would like to edit a reference for The Australian Jazz Quartet. It is a link that goes nowhere, and I have the new correct link. But when I go into edit mode on the page, the references disappear. So I need help with making this correction.

Signed,

Jwbeauch — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jwbeauch (talkcontribs) 23:21, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jwbeauch. When you are reading an article and see a references section near the bottom populated by a series of numbered citations, you might think that if you edit the page, you will see those citations typed in that section and be able to edit them. However, normally what you will see is markup similar to this:

     ==References==

     {{reflist}} or <references />

The text of citations is actually in the body of the article, directly next to statements or paragraphs the citations support, using <ref>...</ref> tags, which display as Footnotes (e.g.[1][2]) when you are reading an article. The template code shown above in the references section collates and displays all of the citations within the article in a numbered list in which the numbers correspond to the footnote numbers in the text. By clicking on the ^ symbol next to a citation display, you can easily find exactly where in the body of the article the citation text appears in order to edit it. For more, please see Help:Referencing for beginners.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:29, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have noticed that links are not underlined unless you hover over them if there is no one specifically logged in, but always underlined if an account *is* logged in. I would rather have them all behave like the former, if possible. Is there any setting that I can tweak to change this like I want it? Joseph398 (talk) 23:41, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Joseph398: If you go to your preferences and select "Appearance", you will see a section "Advanced options". The first item in it is "Underline links"; does selecting "Never" and saving produce the result you want? (I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're looking for.) Deor (talk) 23:55, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Deor: Bingo! Just the setting I was looking for! Joseph398 (talk) 19:39, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
