Portal:United Nations

Self-nomination. Extensive work has been carried out on this portal and I now feel that it's up to FP standards. I requested a peer review months ago but nothing came of it. The portal is quite low maintenance, with random features and Wikinews imports, all that needs to happen is a picture change once a month. Sorry, I should have been more specific: I mean the rollover captions for the pictures, as in under Portal:United Nations/Selected picture/1 change [[Image:Evstafiev-bosnia-sarajevo-un-holds-head.jpg|350px]] to [[Image:Evstafiev-bosnia-sarajevo-un-holds-head.jpg|350px|UN peacekeeper from Norway]] or something similar. That way, you don't get a filename when you put your mouse over the image. Also it looks like it's Selected quote and Selected picture that lacks the captions.   • Support - I think this portal is looking great, although I do have some suggestions for the future. You will definitely want to add more selections; right now it sits around the minimum of 10 selections for every section, and there are probably more articles, biographies, and pictures available on Wikipedia. There are also some more personal preferences, like having two footer links: one for the selection itself and one for the archive like at Portal:Criminal justice, and creating a system for adding new selections like at Portal:Criminal justice/Selected article. But the portal already has a way to edit selections and recommend new ones so these are just suggestions for consideration. --Jh12 (talk) 16:38, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm nominating this portal for featured portal candidacy because I think it meets the criteria. I've been working on this for a while, revamping its complicated design, into a well designed portal, with a random portal component on everything. It has 20 selected articles, 17 selected pictures, 16 sets of 3 DYKs (48 in total), 20 selected biographies, in the news component, 17 selected quotes, and 10 panaromas along with categories, related wikiprojects, quality content, things you can do, topics, related portals and associated wikimedia sections.   • Saw this at peer review and it looks really good. The only thing I can see is that three of your box headers are in italics (Categories, Related WikiProjects, Associated Wikimedia).   1. The portal could use a Things you can do section; would it also be possible to add a Did you know? section?
    • Added a Geography based to do list. I looked thru lots of DYKs and didn't find a single one I wanted to use.
  2. Add Read more... links for that particular article/biography (Portal:Sustainable development)
    • Articles are linked like the rest of wikipedia, from the first instance of the article title.
    It's really optional, though most of the featured portals I've seen go through recently have the read more link anyway, just in case a reader didn't think to click the in-text wiki-link.(recent examples: Portal:Japan, Portal:Mars, Portal:Russia) --Jh12 (talk) 17:45, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  3. Would it be possible to expand Portal:Atlas/Maps/Geographic and Portal:Atlas/Maps/Nautical to ten selections?
    • Yeah, it took alot of looking, but I added a few, 11 geo and 10 nautical total. I will contine to try to increase these.

  • Support - I agree with Cirt that News, Did you know, or other randomized content would be nice, but given the nature of this portal and its overall quality I am going to go ahead and support. Consider adding the read more links or incorporating some of Cirt's suggestions over time.     Not meaning to sound rude, but these are not required in the criteria or guidelines so , not missing, only suggested additions. It's very difficult to find excerpts and headlines on individual maps, when they are meant for articles. Would be really nice to have a Selected quote section, with quotes from notable individuals with existing bio articles on Wikipedia and free-use images about Atlas, maps, mapmaking, geography, or other related topics.
