Re:Portal:Sharks sawfish image

Damn, my inexpertise is showing! The portal was linked on the swordfish page, so I assumed it counted as one... Know of any high quality shark images? The lack of pictures is one of the things letting the portal down at the moment. J Milburn (talk) 19:22, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Also, I see you're responsible for a massive number of shark DYKs/GAs- it's mostly because I saw such a ready supply of them that I decided to work on the portal, so thanks a lot for that! if you could keep the portal updated with any new ones (or just let me know- I'm happy to update it myself) that would be fantastic :) J Milburn (talk) 19:31, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
Brilliant, I'll make use of the article alert system. The criteria for the selected pictures are whatever we choose- thanks for the links, I'll check out the pictures soon. J Milburn (talk) 21:02, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Ray measurements

Measurements of rays commonly confuse people (just see the recent problems with the "largest" stingray according to BBC) with people mixing up measurements of disc (crosswise or lengthwise) and total length. Using the exact term, and the one also used in the specific reference indicated for the sentence in the article, excludes this risk. As you may know, the term "disc width" (WD or DW) is also the standard measurement for rays (see e.g., fishbase). If you reply to this, please do it here rather than on my talk. Thanks. 62.107.237.72 (talk) 21:42, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

I am aware that "disk width" is a standard measurement for rays, but when writing articles for a general audience the accessibility of the language is important. In this case, "across" is an unambiguous word for "how wide it is", as in "the river is 10 feet across", whereas using "disk width" carries with it the caveat that a general reader might not know what the "disk" refers to. I don't know of anyone who would interpret "across" as meaning the length of the disk, as that is not an intuitive interpretation of the word. As for the BBC article, I don't see how they confused the measurements at all in saying that D. microps is about 2 m wide. The only confusion is what the largest stingray is (that would be the short-tail stingray), which is a research, not a linguistic issue. -- Yzx (talk) 22:23, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
