Battle of Red Cliffs edit

According to the history statistics for "Battle of Red Cliffs" (history), you were one of the main editors of this article. I have nominated it for FAR as it seems to lack adequate reference citations. Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 20:32, 5 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Article has been withdrawn from FAR per User:SandyGeorgia. —Mattisse (Talk) 20:40, 5 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hey, dk, how've you been? Yeah, Ling took care of that lack of citations "issue". It just irks me that somebody would add three cite tags and then go straight to FAR without even waiting for the refs to be added. It's as though somebody is looking for a reason to drop Red Cliffs FA status. Doesn't help that they were easily referenced points, either. Gamer Junkie T / C 06:19, 7 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
School just started for me, so I wouldn't be as active now. Other than that I'm as fine as I can be! To me though, it looked like the nominator just wasn't familiar with the Harvard referencing style....Well, the Confucian in me wants to think that everyone is born good and acts out of the best intentions....Whatever, we're back to DEFCON 5 anyways. _dk (talk) 07:47, 7 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, it's all good now. Maybe I could be a little less quick to jump down people's throats, but what can I say, I'm a cynical son of a bitch :) Good luck with school. Gamer Junkie T / C 11:54, 7 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

did I mention...? edit

...did I mention this? Ling.Nut (talkWP:3IAR) 05:22, 24 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am not familiar with this....Are the articles selected based their importance, quality, or both? Because if it's only about importance, I'm okay with the list (maybe swap Dong Zhuo for Yuan Shao); but if it's for quality also, then perhaps only three or four articles can go on there. _dk (talk) 05:38, 24 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
FAs go on the list automatically. Others are selected by a bot script that takes into account importance (as defined by the wikiproject), rating (FA/A/GA etc.) and page views (as a measure of popularity). We're supposed to fix them up by October 20th, though we can ask for changes to the list if we want (swap or remove articles)... Ling.Nut (talkWP:3IAR) 05:42, 24 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, fixing them is out of the question for me, as I have neither the heart nor the time at the moment. (What a thing for a project starting member to say!) Sometimes I wish we had more able hands in this Wikiproject. _dk (talk) 05:53, 24 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
I plan to at least attempt a fix. Would you recommend different articles, based on quality or importance (or preferably some combination of the two)...? Ling.Nut (talkWP:3IAR) 06:09, 24 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
I suggest removing Zhang Fei and Dong Zhuo, and add Yuan Shao and Records of the Three Kingdoms. _dk (talk) 06:41, 24 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

(undent) Could I persuade you to do something that might take 10 or 15 minutes? I no longer have access to biographies from Rafe de Crespigny: A biographical dictionary of Later Han to the Three Kingdoms, Leiden 2007, ISBN 90-04-15605-4. ... I wonder if it would be too much to ask you to scan the bios of all folks on the list (plus Yuan Shao, your recommendation), and email them to me...? Ling.Nut (talkWP:3IAR) 06:55, 24 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've been booted over here by Ling, so I'm hijacking your talk page, dk :) I think I would disagree most with the inclusion of Guan Yu and Zhang Fei of all articles selected. They are important in their own right, particularly the romanticised Guan Yu lore, but overall I believe articles regarding pivotal battles should take their place or be added to the list as well. Perhaps the Battle of Guandu? And how about the Battle of Xiaoting/Yiling? I think both of these battles, alongside Red Cliffs, were particularly important chapters in Three Kingdoms history. I also agree with dk that Dong Zhuo is far less critical than Yuan Shao. It could be argued that he kicked off the entire Three Kingdoms era through his actions, but then the argument could be made for the Yellow Turbans rebels and the Ten Eunuchs as well. Gamer Junkie T / C 05:03, 25 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
If anything concrete was passed down from the Three Kingdoms period, the most obvious would have to be Guan Yu and his spiritual influence on the Chinese cultural sphere....heck, it would be hard not to find an altar of Guan Yu in any Chinese community today! (Does he deserve this? hrm...not as much. If I stop editing tomorrow, you'll know he has come for me for that comment.) The battles, while important, aren't quite up to snuff in terms of quality, and the important bits would be covered in the biographies anyways. _dk (talk) 06:54, 25 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
I guess what he stands for in Chinese culture is pretty important... I guess... Gamer Junkie T / C 08:00, 25 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Tong Li edit

It would really help if you found a reliable source that says that Tong Li published the original Yu-Gi-Oh! - It could be from Tong Li's website or from an archive of Tong Li's site. A bookseller site could help too WhisperToMe (talk) 21:14, 13 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

The problem is, as seen in the talk page of the WikiProject Anime, is that the reputation of Tong Li has come into question because of their past pirating history, so some editors insist that the source must be from an unrelated party. _dk (talk) 22:14, 13 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi. As per LK's suggestion, I've given much thought to the name of this article, and the appropriateness of a "Kingdom of" format. In light of this, and the existence now of Kingdom of Maynila and Kingdom of Namayan, I'd like to move Ancient Tondo to Kingdom of Tondo. But I'd specifically like to ask if you have objections to it. I've raised the matter up on talk:Ancient Tondo. Thanks. -- Alternativity (talk) 17:17, 25 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

"Zhuge Liang" is correct, since Zhuge Liang was the one sent to negotiate with Sun Quan in Chaisang (as mentioned in the paragraph before that). Have fun preparing for midterms! Wu family shrine rubbing edit

I'm not sure which battle it is supposed to depict; the author who I quoted on the image's page provided mere speculation about the figures in the battle scene.--Pericles of AthensTalk 07:09, 2 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

And lest I forget: I love your cat picture. Lol.--Pericles of AthensTalk 07:09, 2 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. =D The names on the cartouches might provide some clues, but unfortunately I can't make out the characters....Though if we look at the battles around that time that features a bridge, then perhaps the Battle of Jieqiao? The presence of women is puzzling, though. And I certainly don't remember anyone in the Wu family (which Wu?) being in that battle... Or maybe the rubbing is made to commemorate some already ancient battle, suggested by the use of chariots (early Spring and Autumn period), or just a coup in the Han court (since high officials would be riding around in chariots with female courtiers around them). _dk (talk) 07:21, 2 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Although his brother and nephew served as low-ranking officials, the tomb occupant Wu Liang (78–151) was one of those gentryman in the Eastern Han who did not want to spoil his reputation as a scholar by working for what he perceived was a corrupt government, so he declined many offers for official appointment (and this was even before the Disasters of Partisan Prohibitions). As a result, he became very well-respected. The epitath to his tomb reads:

"He studied widely and examined the texts in detail. He inquired into the roots of texts, and there was no book that he did not read. The departments of the prefecture and the district invited and summoned him to official posts, but he declined on the grounds of illness. He contented himself with the poverty of his humble home and was pleased with the righteousness that he learned every morning."

Furthermore, Valerie Hansen writes this about the scenes of stone-carved artwork of Wu Liang's tomb shrine (from which the rubbings were derived):

"Wu Liang's scope exceeded that of the Grand Historian. Like Sima, he depicted all of human history, but he went beyond him to show the land of the immortals, presided over by the Queen Mother of the West and her counterpart the King Father of the East, in the west and east gables of the shrine. The gables suggest the shrine was intended as a home both for his body-soul that would remain in the tomb, and for his spirit-soul that could travel to the realm of the immortals."

Hansen, Valerie. (2000). The Open Empire: A History of China to 1600. New York & London: W.W. Norton & Company. ISBN 0393973743.

So this battle scene could depict any number of battles throughout history. Unfortunately, Cary Y. Liu does not specify which one. However, I thought a contemporary Eastern Han illustration of a battle scene was appropriate in an article focused on warfare in the Eastern Han period.--Pericles of AthensTalk 07:54, 2 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I found a book that may go into the details of each portrait, I may go to my university's library tomorrow to find out more :) The problem I have with that image is that it's there for decorative reasons and it can be potentially misleading. _dk (talk) 10:40, 2 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps; I don't think an actual Han relief exists which portrays the campaign against Dong Zhuo. Good luck with finding relevant info.--Pericles of AthensTalk 17:02, 2 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm fine with having no image if none exists. I guess the relevance of the images to the article is more important to me. (Still haven't gone to the library yet!) _dk (talk) 06:59, 3 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Then what of the image of the Han pottery soldiers? Is that not relevant either? They don't display actual soldiers who fought in the campaign against Dong Zhuo, yet they display how Han soldiers' outfits would have looked like in general. The same goes for the Wu family shrine pic, only it shows outfits and weapons that would have been used.--Pericles of AthensTalk 07:04, 3 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
If there is an article on the military systems of ancient China, or of the Han, then those images might be appropriate. Or else these images can show up on every article that happens to be about battles in the Han Dynasty, and who knows where that will end! _dk (talk) 07:25, 3 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I don't know if you still care about this, but the book I mentioned basically says that the battle on the bridge is not identified and is hotly debated. The scene depicted may be a battle fought by one of Wu Ban's superiors on the northern frontier, the conquest of Wu Ding against the southern Guifang (Land of Demons), some ritual, or pure symbolism. _dk (talk) 01:08, 9 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Cool! I'm glad I checked your talk page, I would have missed this. Hope you enjoy History of the Han Dynasty if you have a chance to read the whole thing; the bridge picture is used in it.--Pericles of AthensTalk 13:21, 16 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello friend edit

Its been a while, I hope you remember me dk. I never left Wikipedia, but we havn't really talked much since I sort of stopped editing the Three Kingdoms pages so much. Well I'm back and I have a proposal for you.......

Would you like to join the Koei Warriors Games WikiProject? It is everything Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, Warriors Orochi, and Dynasty Warriors: Gundam. I'm sure you know this, but to participate, add your name to the list of participants and apply {{User WPKoeiWarriors}} to your user page. Here is the WikiProject home page: Wikipedia:Wikiproject/Koei Warriors Games.

I would love for you to join friend, because I know you are a trusty editor who would be a great addition to our team. We only have two members now and I came to ask you. I will probably ask Ling.Nut soon as well. You do not have to join, and neither are you obliged; I am just asking. Thank you for your time dk. --EveryDayJoe45 (talk) 00:59, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thanks for the invitation. I don't usually edit the Koei articles so much, so I don't feel so compelled to join your WikiProject. My apologies. However, I'd be more than happy to oblige if you need any help with anything. _dk (talk) 01:40, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Its fine, I just thought there was a chance you would be interested. I will certainly notify you if we need any help, thanks for the offer. --EveryDayJoe45 (talk) 01:43, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Economy of the Han Dynasty; have a look.--Pericles of AthensTalk 20:51, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Awesome! I'll digest this piece when I have more time, but I don't think I can help out much because economics was never kind to me... _dk (talk) 21:20, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Don't feel too intimidated by the article; I did not fill it up with a bunch of jargon that only people graduating from Harvard Business School would understand. Much of the information in the article has to deal with social class, if that makes it easier for you to approach.--Pericles of AthensTalk 21:25, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
