Dynasty warriors

Hey Junkie! I'm curious why you've decided to include all the character info for the Dynasty Warrior series on the respective pages of the historical figures they represent? The reason I ask is because your entries are very detailed and well written, and if you compiled them in one location it would make an extraordinary article! Also, the material seems a little out of place on the biographical pages, since there is detailed info from the games that is essentially unrelated the principal subject of each articles. DW Images

Hi. Thanks for the tip. I felt that since the game's out, all of the Warriors' portraits needed an update but I'm pretty new at this and I know so little about all of Wikipedia's guidelines, which I should take a gander at. Re: AfD for Raccoon Police Department

Part of closing an AfD when the consensus is far from clear is evaluating the arguments from both sides. It is not strictly a numbers game in such cases. See Wikipedia:Deletion_guidelines_for_administrators#Rough_consensus:

Consensus is not determined by counting heads, but by looking at strength of argument, and underlying policy (if any). Arguments that contradict policy, are based on opinion rather than fact, or are logically fallacious, are frequently discounted. For instance, if someone finds the entire page to be a copyright violation, a page is always deleted. If an argument for deletion is that the page lacks sources, but an editor adds the missing references, said argument is no longer relevant. (emphasis mine)

I realized the decision might be controversial which is why I added an explanation for the decision when I closed it. I sincerely hope you will take the article to deletion review if you think my decision was faulty or very flawed. Best, Pigman☿ 06:39, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

• Because of your complaint, I took the article to WP:DRV myself in order to get other opinions on my judgment in this situation. Please see here for the discussion. Currently, opinion is running 5-0 affirming the deletion. I'd like to emphasize that my role in closing AfDs is almost entirely administrative although I am tasked with weighing the arguments in cases like this one. I don't have the time or energy to salvage or improve every article that comes through the process that I close, even just the borderline ones. I believe that anybody can add references to this particular article. I wouldn't have voted for it to remain if that wasn't the case. The information can be absolutely confirmed simply by playing the games and referencing the memos and cinematic dialogue. I said that I would do it and that wasn't a lie, but right now, I'm working on referencing List of Dynasty Warriors characters. I have 52 characters worth of referencing to establish, the article falls within the boundries of my personal WikiProject, and I've already given my word to my fellow project members that this will be my next major overhaul. I'm not going to be finished anytime soon, but I would reference the article as soon as I could. The problem is, I don't believe the bureaucrats have the patience for such an effort. Well the problem is that the article was deleted for not meeting Wikipedia's notability standards for fiction. I couldn't in all honesty say that I know where to find references of that kind pertaining to such guidelines, although I also couldn't say that there aren't other editors who would know. I suppose we'll not find out as long as articles are being nominated and removed before anybody has the chance to try. References had been provided and subsequently removed over time due to them stemming from blacklisted sources. I think people just gave up trying to find anything that would legitimately fit with protocol. If there had been a time factor in place for references to be added before the article was deleted, I'm sure people would try. Assume good faith. Isn't that one of Wikipedia's policies or something? I'd only be repeating myself to a number of considerably less hospitable members who hold polar opposite perspectives regarding the operation of Wikipedia. It's going to be policy after guideline after policy hurled in my direction, going back and forth between nominations, previous statements, reviews and technicalities to defend my position, which is just about everything I despise about that inner machinations of this project. Half-life characters template

In answer to your statement I think we should make a separate list for more important supporting characters and those less important. We can't have characters that accompany the player through most of the game like Alyx does in the same league with characters who are just part of the storyline and appaer only at few points of the game and aren't accompanying the player like Dr. Arne Magnusson.

I think this case (the Arkley research facility article) should go to WP:DRV, this was a somewhat tough decision one way or the other it was susceptible to go through review, one camp saying the article being consisting of original research, the other saying being notable as part of a notable film/game, etc. I agree with those two aspects. With the redirect, the info is still available to all and if the deletion review results in reversing the redirect move, we could revert the last edit. Feel free to name it WP:DRV. For now, the info on the facility is still available (via history edits) and can be either userfied or merged to any Resident Evil article for now. Quite frankly, while not very familiar with anything related to Resident Evil, even though I've seen the first two movies, but did not played the games itself nor remember the characters/facilities, etc, it looks to be notable enough to at least be mentionned somewhere - if it is improved, one can be bold and fully restore it/revert my last edit (to avoid the lengthy discussion/back-in forth as you mentionned) (or the DRV). I think it does have potential to be a good article especially if more content is verifiable (most especially the second half of the content) - this case looks more similar to Raccoon City were it was closed at first as no-consensus and I've seen some discussion about trimming some OR. For now, I've redirected to the main Residential Evil article, not sure where exactly to put it - Raccoon City, Umbrella Corporation, the video game, or one of the films, etc. So for now, do you want the content to be userfied or do you want me merge it somewhere--JForget 00:52, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Plot summary rules

The general rule on plot summaries, whatever the medium, is that they be kept reasonably short (see WP:NOT#PLOT) not only for reasons of general encyclopedicity but especially so for copyrighted works as a lengthy, detailed plot summary can be considered a copyright violation. The different projects (WP:FILM, WP:NOVEL etc.) have their own interpretations of this, and the relevant one here is WP:FilmPlot, which says: "Plot summaries should be between 400 and 700 words and should not exceed 900 words unless there is a specific reason such as a very complicated plot." "Guideline" doesn't mean you can necessarily ignore it if you want — you need consensus that such a long retelling of the story is necessary (and given that it's a copyrighted work, I doubt you'd get it). It's undergirded by the main principle at WP:PLOT, which reads in relevant part: "A brief plot summary may sometimes be appropriate as an aspect of a larger topic."

In any case that plot summary takes up way too much of the article. We've been trimming down plot summaries for quite some time now ... The fact that the guideline has only been around for a year is why I consider it creep. Pretty much anything that isn't a founding policy or guideline has been added, frankly, by people attempting to legitimise a Wiki-MoS/guideline/policy they feel should be adhered to. I promise you now that Jimbo Wales didn't say anything about limiting plot analysis to 1000 words or less back in '01-'02. I also promise that it was almost certainly a veteran administrator who subscribes to the Deletionist philosophy, and who believed him/herself to have enough clout and experience to dictate a universal MoS. This was almost certainly backed by his/her fellow members who also subscribe to said philosophy and who are also the most active types of editors in regards to Wiki-bureaucracy and, thus, it became a guideline. Sooner or later somebody's going to come across a book or set of references we can use. As for the anime and manga stuff... well, myself and a couple of others attempted to compromise by leaving certain portions and then asking that people add only specifically labelled and referenced anime/manga weapons to the list. After about another 20 or 30 additions without a single reference, I pretty much came to the end of my tether and simply deleted it all. Don't think we've had a problem since. I removed the FF paragraph because you were being, however unknowingly, ridiculously biased. I assume you're just unaware, rather than being intentionally hypocritical, but Ruroni Kenshin, Fire Emblem, and Naruto all also reference the weapon by name, and feature them far more prominently. RK and Naruto have major characters who use them as primary weapons, while Fire Emblem has used them as a weapon in every game in the series (often translating the name more loosely in the English releases, as "calvary sword" and the like). --erachima talk 08:00, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

You mean the refs? Mostly because they were self-evident: the Fire Emblem listing already mentioned the game the weapon specifically appeared in, Sagara Sanosuke's article already describes him using one, etc.

Statements that are basic knowledge with regard to a subject (i.e. in the definition of the term) don't need a reference, they need a wikilink. • I've only played one PC RPG in my life for more than a total of one hour perhaps, or for more than once ever. This happened in 1985 or 1986 or so. My friends had a game on a 5¼-inch floppy disc. Me and all my friends played it incessantly. In fact, I played it for literally two days straight, stopping only to eat, sleep and poop. After two days, I was really really really motion sick from the flickering screen—I mean really seriously motion sick. Then at one point I stopped and said, "WTF? I've played this game so much that it's made me ill and dizzy, I can hardly walk!" Then I folded and ripped the floppy disc in my hands (can't do that now!) and threw it away. I haven't played any RPG more than a teensy bit (read above) since then...more than twenty years. And what game was that, you ask? Behold the power of Wizard's Crown!
• I never play any computer games now, 'cause I know I have an addictive personality (and.. because.. I still get a bit queasy thinking about what happened two decades ago). Hi there - when you find time to work on "bouncer", could you try to look especially for non-western (but modern) world history? I am drawing blanks, a fresh approach might have more success.

Can you look through this? I don't know whether to include it now, I don't want to get side-tracked from the other cultures stuff. But it seems to be good, serious research, with some interesting bits on behaviour and bouncing strategies (read the stuff about where the bouncers threw out the victim to protect it). I think the system has totally gone crazy, and it doesn't help that in addition to Philcha's excessive need to correct every little thing, one also has to live with sniping from people like ReverendLogos. Ingolfson's comments are unhelpful. Wikipedia:Good article criteria does not compromise on WP:V, for obvious reasons. One of my recent GA reviews would have been done (with a pass as GA) in 2 days if a tech problem had not added a day. Another needed quite a lot of work, but got there, and the main editor (who worked his socks off) gave me a Barnstar for being patient and helpful. The editor of Lisa Moretti has also done GA reviews (including on one of "my" articles, but I don't think she remembered that) was happy with my approach, and that was in a pro wrestling article, where WP:RS are hard to find. In these cases I applied exactly the same criteria, including checking that every ref supported what was said in the text.

TCIAL, I would be disappointed if I had to fail the article after all the work that's gone into it. Please let me know whether you wish to continue. --Philcha (talk) 10:29, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

If the owners have released the images under a Wikipedia-compatible licence for use here, then there is no problem. However, there isn't currently any evidence that they have done this other than some text saying so, and so the images remain as non-free. For the procedure to follow on this issue, see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. (Yes, it's a pain, but we have to be consistent on this or else we run the risk of violating copyright for downstream users). Black Kite 10:56, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

• ...and that's the problem. If someone says we can use their material but retains copyright on it (which is what that note says - "copyright Rebellion A/S 2008") then it remains non-free, and needs to comply with WP:NFCC. In fact, that "release" is actually useless to us, as we could have used the material under fair use criteria anyway. For the material to be used without the non-free problem, it needs to be released with a Creative Commons license, and then Rebellion wouldn't retain copyright on it, which I doubt they would ever do.   • The issue is that (a) the image is copyrighted, and therefore is being used under a claim of fair use, but (b) the use of the image in this particular article does not comply with our non-free policies and guidelines as in general, we do not use non-free images in list articles (an image to identify the subject in a stand-alone article is taken as minimal use, but clearly allowing them on list articles would result in an overuse). I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized).
