Image uploads

Hi. Several of your image uploads from the National Governor's Association are problematic. On the image description pages for these images, you said that they were public domain because the National Governors Association is a federally funded organization. The NGA's own website, though, asserts copyright. If the NGA were a department or agency of the federal government, that would be one thing, but simply receiving federal funds doesn't make their works public domain. Most of the images are official state photographs and not actually owned by the NGA anyway - the respective state governments own the copyright of those photos. What you may be able to do is show that these images are press or publicity photos, that have been freely circulated by the original copyright holder (presumably the individual governors, not the NGA), without express reservation of copyright. This has been held to constitute a release of the copyright to the public domain. see, Milton H. Greene Archives, Inc. v. BPI Commc'ns, Inc., 378 F.Supp.2d 1189, 1199-1200 (C.D. Cal. 2005)(movie publicity photos of Marilyn Monroe thus circulated by publicists held to be released to public domain). D. Nimmer, 4 Nimmer on Copyright § 13.06 (2008). You would probably need to do a Google image search to locate other sites where the photo had been published without reservation of the photo copyright. (A website's copyright, or reservation thereof, is irrelevant, unless the website rightholder also happens to be the original copyright holder of the image.) Election result maps

Kudos and props for your upload of maps showing county-level results of statewide elections, such as 02ALgovernorcounties.PNG . With respect to that one map, there is, however, a minor error. Madison County (of the two currently red counties along the northern border of the state, it's the one on the right) was narrowly carried by Siegelman, by 42,712 to 42,345 for Riley, so it should be blue. You appear to have done a lot of research, but if you need a quick refer, the certified numbers in Excel format are available from the Secretary of State here. Since Madison is one of the most populous counties in Alabama, and the election was close, you may want to fix it. I didn't see any other problems from my memory of the results. 1. First put the cursor at the point in the edit text where you want the footnote to go, then click "Cite" in the edit strip at the top of the Edit Page, then click "Templates" on the left, and a drop-down menu appears.
2. Choose "cite web" or "cite news" (for articles and websites), "cite book" or "cite journal", click and a box comes up.
3. Fill in the all details of the citation, then click "Preview" and "Show parsed preview" to see it looks right. (To correct anything, correct the box entries, then click the two "Previews" again.) In "cite book" remember to add the page number(s) of the book.
4. Click "Insert" and the citation automatically goes into the edit text. (It may not go in at the exact point where the cursor is if you use Firefox or Chrome.)
