US 9 in NY map

Hi, your user page says you should be back from your break today.

I am wondering if you could make a New York-specific map of US 9 from the one for the whole road and put it in the article U.S. Route 9 in New York? I figure you probably have the original file so it would be easier to modify it than for someone else to start from scratch.

The article just made GA and I would like to have a map to go along with it, as per the longstanding request on the talk page. Daniel Case 19:23, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Heya, sorry to be responding 10 days later. I'm currently away from my GIS software and expect to be for probably another week. I shall try, if no one else has, to create this map once I return to that software. Cheers. Stratosphere (U T) 03:31, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
Image:US_9_(NY)_map.png -- Let me know if this needs any fixin' otherwise feel free to stick it in the article. Cheers. Stratosphere (U T) 22:12, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Welcome back!

Good to see you back, man. The MTF wasn't the same without you. =) Regards, TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 16:43, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. Yeah, all those college classes really cut into my sittin' around time. Stratosphere (U T) 17:19, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

If you have the time...

Could you take the US-1 map and remove the red from US -1, or just make me a blank one? That would be great.--DJSpeak your mind... 15:19, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Heya, the United States Numbered Highways article has maps of both the USR network and USR + Interstate networks if that's all you're looking for. Cheers. Stratosphere (U T) 23:35, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. I didn't realize that it was there. I'm having a blonde moment.--DJSpeak your mind... 18:39, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Penobscot Indian Island Reservation

I used the National Atlas to come up with commons:Image:PenobscotIndianIslandReservation.png recently, but I'm not really happy with it. If you have the time and inclination, would you like to take a swing at it? I'd like to show it in relation to Bangor, Orono, and Old Town, Maine: beyond that, I leave it up to your judgment. Thanks, either way. :-)--SarekOfVulcan 21:20, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Hey, sorry for the delay, I've been kind of in and out on here lately. If you hvaen't had this request filled elsewhere, When I get back home Monday I'll take a look at this to see if I have the data to do it. Basically you want a similar map with the towns you mentioned highlighting the reservation that you currently have in green? Cheers. Stratosphere (U T) 18:36, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
I was unable to find a GIS data set which had the reservation boundaries in it. The one I downloaded from NationalAtlas showed it in New Hampshire somewhere. If you can point me to a data set that might be right, I'll give it another go. Stratosphere (U T) 21:11, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

An important letter

Dear roads editor,

You may have noticed some changes at WP:USRD lately. Some of them, like the cleanup templates and the stub templates, have been astounding and great. Unfortunately, others have been disturbing.

This has become evidenced by the departure of a few prominent editors at USRD, a few RFC's, and much fighting among USRD editors.

After the second RFC, many of us found the opportunity to take a step away from Wikipedia for a while--as a self-imposed wikibreak, or possibly on vacation.

The result of such introspection was that many of us were placing ourselves in a "walled garden" and on a self-imposed pedestal of authority over the roads department. Also, we were being hostile to a few users who were not agreeing with us.

In fact, IRC has been the main incarnation of this "walled garden." Decisions have been made there to conduct grudges and prejudices against a few valued USRD users with poor justification.

For this, we have come to apologize. We have come to ask your forgiveness.

In addition to this, we hope to work as one USRD team from now on and to encourage cooperation instead of the promotion of interests.

All users are welcome to collaborate on IRC, the newsletter, or anywhere else at USRD.

In the future, please feel free to approach us about any issues you may have.

Regards,

I-95 in NJ

Was looking through the Interstate 95 in New Jersey article and the related Pennsylvania Turnpike/Interstate 95 Interchange Project to find out more about the completion of the overall mainline Interstate system, and found the details of the rerouting to be really difficult to understand. The interchange project page has some good text details, but a pair of maps of I-95 around the Philly/Trenton area before and after the project completion would add tremendouly to the article I think. Don't suppose I could ask for your assistance? Thanks, Jawsdog 22:10, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

USRD Inactivity check and news report

Hello, Stratosphere. We had a few urgent matters to communicate to you:

  1. Please update your information at Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/Participants, our new centralized participant list. Those who have not done so by October 20th will be removed.
  2. There are important discussions taking place at WT:USRD relating to whether WP:USRD, WP:HWY, or the state projects should hold the "power" in the roads projects.

I-26 Map

Hey there,

I was reviewing some of the highways to see what needed a map and noticed that the I-26 map needs to be updated as I-26 extends now to the full length of the former I-181. I wouldn't mind updating the map but I was thinking it might be easier for you to just make the minor change.

Tennessee maps

Hey there,

Those Tennessee maps are wonderful. I had been hoping to do some, even resorting to hand editing the TIGER maps, but wasn't making much progress. Can you tell me what source you're using for the maps? Keep up the good work! 25or6to4 (talk) 03:08, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

  • Heya! I have some shapefiles that came from ESRI (the dudes that make ArcGIS), I'm not sure if they're derived from TIGER or not, the metadata doesn't indicate who did it. The NHPNLine shapefiles don't always have all the state routes, and in TN's case I'm having to use a more detailed street level shapefile, which I can then select the segment to highlight. Stratosphere (U T) 03:13, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

I-355 map

I was looking for a map that had a more accurate depication of I-355's southern extension, given IL GIS data. But we're stuck for now, because no one has GIS data recent enough to show the southern extension - not the state or any of the official online mapping services. So you can go ahead and close that out for now. Thanks! —Rob (talk) 18:24, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

Detroit maps with U.S. 25

I like the new maps for the Detroit 3di freeways that you've added, but they seem to have a label for U.S. 25 which was scaled back out of Michigan (and for that matter Ohio) way back in 1974. -- KelleyCook (talk) 19:32, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

P.S. Capitol Loop needs one. *ducks* Any thoughts on finding the mile point(s) for the junction along the CL with BL I-96? I tried looking through the PR finder and it read like Greek to me. I assume that's because of the one-way streets involved. --Imzadi1979 (talk) 06:45, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

New York State Route 400

You did a nice job on the NY 400 map, however NY 400 ends at NY 16 in South Wales, NY 16 resumes as the major route heading south. I would like to join the Maps Taskforce

Hello,

I am fairly new to Wikipedia and I was wondering how I can go about joining the Maps Taskforce. I understand the purpose of this group, and I also understand the guidlines. What I need to know more about is the software used to create/edit the State Highway maps. I was also wondering how to get started taking requests for maps. Thank you.

Stratosphere, I've been looking for someone to help explain quantum GIS to me so I can start making some maps. I notice you make many of them so I figured you might be able to help. I downloaded the program and it is just blank. No immediate rush, any time you have a moment if you could write a brief how to get started with it on my page. I'm pretty good at figuring things out once I'm started. Thanks alot! -Airtuna08 (talk) 06:48, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
Heya, I've never actually used QGIS, so I'm not sure if I could be of assistance. If by blank you mean an empty canvas, like a new document, usually you need to add shapefiles from some source. I doubt it comes with anything so you'll need to find some. Stratosphere (U T) 09:09, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
Ah, what do you use? Maybe I could get going with that instead if you don't mind dropping me a quick tutorial. Thanks! -Airtuna08 (talk) 05:47, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
I use the ArcGIS suite as that is what I was formally trained in at university and use at work. It's a rather complex piece of software, plus its not free (and by not free I mean you could buy a new car instead). I know the manufacturers, ESRI, have a support site which has tutorials at http://support.esri.com/. But, free, QGIS is the way to go, I just haven't ever used it. Stratosphere (U T) 08:01, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Oh, alright. Well thanks for letting me know. I'll see if I can find someone about QGIS. -Airtuna08 (talk) 21:52, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Simple envy here

Good day! I'm posting merely to say how impressed I am with your travels. It is one of many things I would much like to do myself, but for one reason or another have not. To that end, I'm curious: how do you *fund* this? :) --Sntint (talk) 20:53, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Hello! I wish I was independently wealthy so I could just drive around all the time, but alas! Usually money I made while I worked during college went to driving, since I had loans to pay for school. Now that I'm out looking for a job I haven't been driving much, but it can be expensive. The May 07 trip around the east coast cost me just $800 in gas. When you make some money, save some of it up and treat yourself to a road trip every once in a while :) Stratosphere (U T) 02:06, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Reverie, Tennessee area map

Hello Stratosphere, you recently created a map for Tennessee State Route 180 that gave me the idea to ask you if a map of the area of Reverie, Tennessee could be made, maybe in a similar fashion than the map of the Kentucky Bend or as a satellite image with information overlayed. It is not a road map, however.

In a nutshell: During the earthquakes in 1811/12 the Mississippi River changed course and cut off a horseshoe bend, leaving part of Tipton County, Tennessee (including the settlement of Reverie) on the Arkansas side of the river. The state line, now and then is unchanged, still indicating the pre-earthquake middle of the river. More info in the article, the situation is described there but a map would illustrate it more clearly and quickly.

The following I would consider important. The current course of the Mississippi River in its full width. The Tennessee/Arkansas stateline following the middle of the river where it has not changed and following the old course where it has changed in the earthquakes, well the current stateline.

By the way, the stateline in that area as indicated on the map feature that pops up when you click the globe near the coordinates is wrong, it follows the river in the the middle, where it should follow the northernmost side arm there. Do you have any idea who can correct that?

The ideal case would be a satellite image (as availabe on the popup map feature) with the state line overlayed in red and the state and county names, maybe major roads in the area, if easily possible. The great thing with the satellite image would be that you can actually see the course changes of the past in it, or the geological features the old course left in the landscape.

This request is not urgent. Thank you for your time! doxTxob \ talk 23:44, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Heya. I will look into creating this for you. Did you just want to focus on Tipton Co? Also, regarding the maps that popup at the coordinates link, I'd assume you'd have to contact whoever runs those as they're not derived by the Wikipedia community (i.e. Google maps, terraserver, etc...). Cheers. Stratosphere (U T) 10:13, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
Hello! Thank you for considering it. As you were asking: What I would like best is a circa 12 mi wide and 8 mi high map with Reverie about centered and Wilson, AR marked on the map, maybe with I-55 northwest of Wilson and US 61 going through Wilson on it for better orientation on the map. That would be part of Tipton Co., TN and part of Mississippi Co., AR. Practically the area what you see on the popup map at full zoom.
I was considering a bigger map but that might confuse more than clarify as that would have two other border anomalies on it, one near Island No. 30 upriver and the Frenchman's Bayou downriver. There are no settlements recorded on those exclaves and there are no articles about them as there is not much to say about them. What do you think? Thank you very much for your help! doxTxob \ talk 22:13, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
I created a map that is about 30mi x 18mi so readers could see highways on either side of the river for context. I also added the cities, but there was not a data point for Reverie so I added that manually and made it stick out, since thats the focus of the article. Let me know if I need to fix something! Image:Reverie, Tennessee map.png Cheers Stratosphere|Talk 20:49, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
That is perfect. Far better than I thought it could look like. I like that with the stateline in red you can follow the middle of the river as of 1795, when the border was established, and you can compare it to the present. Wow, it even follows a few side arms today. Enough detail where required but not too much to distract, a perfect balance. Amazing work! Thank you so much! doxTxob \ talk 23:31, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Great job on the expansion and with the pictures! The article brought back some awesome memories. I've traveled the highway - it is definitely one of the most beautiful places in the UP (from someone who has visited most of the UP on vacations).
