WikiCup 2012 October newsletter

The 2012 WikiCup has come to a close; congratulations to Cwmhiraeth (submissions), our 2012 champion! Cwmhiraeth joins our exclusive club of previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009), Sturmvogel 66 (2010) and Hurricanehink (2011). Our final standings were as follows:

3. Grapple X (submissions)
4. Casliber (submissions)
5. Muboshgu (submissions)
6. Miyagawa (submissions)
7. Ruby2010 (submissions)
8. Dana Boomer (submissions)

Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

• The featured article award goes to Grapple X (submissions), for four featured articles in the final round.
• The good article award also goes to Grapple X (submissions), for 19 good articles in the second round.
• The list award goes to Muboshgu (submissions), for three featured lists in the final round.
• The topic award goes to Grapple X (submissions), for three good topics (with around 40 articles) in round 4.
• The did you know award goes to Cwmhiraeth (submissions), for well over 100 DYKs in the final round.
• The news award goes to ThaddeusB (submissions), for 10 in the news items in round 3.
• The picture award goes to Grandiose (submissions), for two featured pictures in round 2.
• The reviewer award goes to both Ruby2010 (submissions) (14 reviews in round 1) and Grandiose (submissions) (14 reviews in round 3).
• Finally, for achieving an incredible bonus point total in the final round, and for bringing the top-importance article frog to featured status, a biostar has been awarded to Cwmhiraeth (submissions).

Awards will be handed out in the coming days; please bear with us! This year's competition also saw fantastic contributions in all rounds, from newer Wikipedians contributing their first good or featured articles, right up to highly experienced Wikipedians chasing high scores and contributing to topics outside of their usual comfort zones. It would be impossible to name all of the participants who have achieved things to be proud of, but well done to all of you, and thanks! Wikipedia has certainly benefited from the work of this year's WikiCup participants.

Next year's WikiCup will begin in January. Currently, discussions and polls are open, and all contributions are welcome. You can also sign up for next year's competition. There will be no further newsletters this year, although brief notes may be sent out in December to remind everyone about the upcoming competition. School District 53 Okanagan Similkameen

Hi Status! Do you think School District 53 Okanagan Similkameen would be a good candidate for featured list status, as right now I'm afraid it doesn't pass 3b of the featured list criteria. This is the only article for this, and it can't be merged into anything, however, I personally believe it passes, but am not sure of what others think. Do you think it does? Thoughts? Phillip Phillips' Home

If you are unaware of American Idol tradition, the winner digital single is for the always released the day after the finale night. This one happens to be included in the album, but it is the single. The new one is exactly the same recording, the only difference with the new one is that it has a new picture. It doesn't mean the single was released in June, it only means that that one with new picture was released that day. Hzh (talk) 00:29, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Note that on iTunes itself it said the single was released on May 23, 2012 - Phillip Phillips. This is the same article as the one on Allmusic. Also Billboard said it is the single in an article written in May 30, 2012 here, before the June date. Hzh (talk) 01:57, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Well, I will leave a critic commentary here. The song has a very good beat and sound, but the lyrics are not living up to standard [mostly Pitbull's part]. The vocal performance of Lopez is astonishing in my opinion, very sexy and stylish. Althoguh, some repetitiveness damage what could have been an amazing song. It's an OK song! Of course, Pitbull has to go and ruin everything he touches as usual. Although, that's sort of a lie, because "On the Floor" and "Give Me Everything" are both amazing songs. I would have liked it better if it wasn't so alcoholic-like. One moment, we are just drinking on the weekend to relax after a long week, and then we just decide to drink every single day of the week! Hello. A new picture on Demi Lovato's wikipedia page is needed, therefore I legally bought a recent picture of her from getty images and took the full permission to use it on Demi's wiki page. List of Ringer episodes

Hi. In response to your message to me earlier, WP:TVPLOT suggests that, in a short summary outside of the episode article itself (if there is one or not, doesn't matter), it should be from "100–200 words for each, with upwards of 350 words for complex storylines", it doesn't really matter if there is an episode article or not. If it has an actual episode article, then it should be more words says that same guideline, but in this case, it should be "100–200 words for each, with upwards of 350 words for complex storylines", as already said. "The plot summary is an overview of the episode's main events, so avoid minutiae like dialogue, scene-by-scene breakdowns, individual jokes and technical detail" says that guideline if it helps, and don't hide spoilers per WP:SPOILERS (just in case it is). In your list, most seem good, but some are too long, such as episode 22 summary. I'd be inclined to give a peer review, and I thank you for modelling it of off my list. Thank you for your reply. I'm not familiar with WP:TVPLOT, thanks for pointing that out for me. I'm not too familiar with TV articles, but I wanted to give it a go for one of my favorite shows. Yeah, the first, even five, look very good, and your welcome. Yeah, I love working with television articles, and lately other ones as well. And about the script, no problem, and that's not the only useful script. There's also a dash, overlinking, general formatting, advisor script, and more, see User:TBrandley/vector.js for my other good scripts. They're very good. Here's my quick review, I took at look at everything other than episode plot summaries. Looks pretty good overall:

• The featured list criteria is against the use of non-free use rationale images. Any other replacement images?
• Avoid periods in image captions that aren't full sentences
• I would say there is too much plot details in the lede, and too little other information, such as production, reception information and such
• Also, first paragraph should be split into two, as it is a really bigger paragraph
• Could writers and directors be referenced?
• Reference problems; "TV Line" should be "TVLine"; "TVbytheNumbers" should be "TV by the Numbers"
• How is "Contactmusic" a high-quality reliable source?

Please stop removing reliable sources and referenced content

I have only noticed your edits twice recently and twice you have removed perfectly valid content and sources. Here you removed a huge chunk of content from - Home (Phillip Phillips song), claiming that it is unsourced when in fact some of those deleted content are in fact sourced, the content in the Critical reception was sourced to here. It looks like you never even look at the source before deleting it. If the reference wasn't done properly, then there is the citation need tag and other tags you can use. Here in Taylor Swift discography you revert sales number from perfectly valid sources, without giving proper rationale why that is not acceptable and that another outdated one would be preferable. Roughstock is a perfectly valid source, it is not less reliable than Billboard, they get their numbers from the same source which is SoundScan. The source of the numbers are the same - SoundScan, there is no such thing as "not as reliable" when their sources are the same. As I said, most of the content in Critical Reception for Home were actually sourced, if poorly done (they are not inline citation, but instead of deleting them, you should have used other tags instead). A Blogspot blog could get their information from SoundScan, does that make it reliable for usage? They weren't sourced at all. Roughstock is not just a blog. It is a magazine site for country music news, it existed before there were blogs. I have no idea what you mean by unsourced, these sites have to pay money to get those numbers, they can't invent them, and the numbers always tally with others (like Yahoo Music, Billboard, MTV) when it is possible to check and compare, meaning they are legitimate numbers. Sorry to intrude, but I would just to comment that most of these articles (Jennifer Lopez discography, No Me Ames, etc) weren't compiled from years of hard work from numerous other editors. Status created some of them and substantially expanded most of them. Additionally, I have encouraged and even asked him to format dates this way per MOSNUM. It's just easier and more manageable.
