Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins
Hello,
Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers
Hi Spike Wilbury.
A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.
If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)
New Page Review needs your help
Hi Spike Wilbury,
As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).
Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.
Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.
It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.

Bleh. I really don't feel like messing with it right now, but gimme the link and a noping to the author and image and I'll get around to it. I've done a few half assed things in my time, but it's a bit too half assed to just comment on how this should be un-mucked by someone else and leave it. TimothyJosephWood 14:44, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
- I'm doing some leg work. I performed a reverse image search on the image and didn't find anything, so we will have to assume he made it. It's derivative of a PD logo, so he's fine licensing it as cc-by-sa 4.0. I'm looking into his other edits as well; I'll follow up soon. --Spike Wilbury (talk) 15:01, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
- Just as well. But if it requires an internationally banned template (honestly I've never seen that one before), then it needs it. It's almost certainly "original", but it's equally certainly derivative, so all the legalese caveats need to come with it. TimothyJosephWood 15:03, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

Anas el-Fiqqi
Hello Spike Wilbury,
I have recently updated a page reg. Anas El Fiqqi and the content I added was deleted. How can I ensure that my updates are not deleted? I can guarantee it is all accurate information and will be sure to include references when updating it.
Thanks, Hana El Fekky — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.3.58.112 (talk) 09:23, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
- Information about living or recently deceased people must cited reliable sources. None of the content you added was sourced. Please see the note I left on your talk page and WP:BLP for more information. --Spike Wilbury (talk) 10:56, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
LK's lead edits
I see you've argued with LK at Talk:Ringo_Starr#.22Musician.22 about his reductive lead changes; I think it's getting ridiculous. His behavior at Kind of Blue has forced me to open an RfC there, and edits like these are just obsessive :/ Dan56 (talk) 19:10, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Dan56, I'm pondering the best course of action here. I'm positive this user believes they are improving articles (and in some places there probably are excessive lists of "occupations" next to people's names) but their behavior grows odd when they encounter disagreement. He has met quite a bit of resistance at Ringo Starr and George Harrison. I'll be interested to see if he continues reverting. --Spike Wilbury (talk) 20:13, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- Yep, odd indeed. And defensive. Dan56 (talk) 21:10, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- He's responded in no way to the RfC, although he oddly added "bio" to the RfC tag ([1]), when it's an album article. Strange. Dan56 (talk) 01:55, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
- He's under no obligation to respond to the RfC, unless of course he resumes edit warring. If he's opening discussions and generally respecting the outcome of those discussions there's not much to be done other than treating it as any other disagreement. If he gets into further edit warring behavior, though, I would consider opening an administrative noticeboard thread about his behavior to get other editor input. To be clear, I would not take any administrative action here since I have been involved in some of the content disagreements, nor do I think the situation has risen to that level. Lawrencekhoo, notifying you as a courtesy that you are being discussed here. --Spike Wilbury (talk) 11:33, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Invitation to Admin confidence survey
Hello,
Beginning in September 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Anti-harassment tool team will be conducting a survey to gauge how well tools, training, and information exists to assist English Wikipedia administrators in recognizing and mitigating things like sockpuppetry, vandalism, and harassment.
The survey should only take 5 minutes, and your individual response will not be made public. This survey will be integral for our team to determine how to better support administrators.
To take the survey sign up here and we will send you a link to the form.
We really appreciate your input!
Please let us know if you wish to opt-out of all massmessage mailings from the Anti-harassment tools team.

Quering your reversion of my edit to Geddy Lee
It's no big deal, but I'm wondering why you reverted the edit where I added Geddy Lee to Category:Canadian collectors. Your edit summary, "Meaning what?" means nothing, ironically.
He's Canadian and he collects things. That's what the category is for – it's as simple as that. The category is not meant to be reserved for people known primarily as collectors, if that's what you were thinking. He's also currently listed as a notable collector in article collecting, and whereas I don't necessarily agree that he ought to be so listed, I don't care enough to make that call. That someone listed as a notable collector should fail to be included in some subcategory of Category:Collectors was a discrepency, which I fixed. 121.45.72.211 (talk) 13:45, 12 November 2017 (UTC)
- I meant that it should be properly diffused into a subcategory, because nothing gets placed in that level. Sorry I wasn't more clear. --Spike Wilbury (talk) 14:00, 12 November 2017 (UTC)
- If you look at Category:Collectors by nationality there are several that contain only one or a few people. "Canadian collectors" is not marked as a container category. He could just go in Category:Collectors but as far as I know there's no principled reason why more members thereof aren't diffused into national subcategories; I think it's just that few people have bothered. 121.45.72.211 (talk) 14:25, 12 November 2017 (UTC)
- You're correct, my apologies. --Spike Wilbury (talk) 17:24, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

Jimi Hendrix edit
Hello Spike
May I ask what was wrong with the correction I made? It originally said that the Jimi Hendrix single "Hey Joe" was released on October 23, 1966, which was obviously wrong because records are simply not released on Sundays. I already knew the correct date was December 16th 1966 anyway (a far more feasible Friday) and I provided a link to confirm that fact. In what way did it not conform to Wikipedia's verifiability policy?
If I see any glaring errors like that on any website, my first instinct is to correct them no matter what I have to do in order to achieve that. If that particular error is not corrected by me I may ask a friend to correct it instead. I don't mind as long as it is corrected. I just can't stand to see such obvious errors going uncorrected.
Regards
ZebedyZak (talk) 19:41, 27 November 2017 (UTC)
- Hi, it may seem to be an obvious error to you, but we have a policy that things must be verifiable by reliable sources. The source you provided is a database that looks to be built on user submissions. That wouldn't meet our definition of a reliable source. If you can provide a citation to a reliable music publication that verifies this date, we can change it. --Spike Wilbury (talk) 22:31, 27 November 2017 (UTC)
Bob Seger and the Eagles
The relationship is cited on Frey's and Seger's wikipedia pages. Why is that not enough? Bob Caldwell CSL (talk) 16:59, 30 November 2017 (UTC)
- How would I, or any other reader know that? Citations to reliable sources need to be in the relevant article and we can't rely on the reader clicking away to find them in related articles. Additionally, infoboxes should never house content that's not discussed and cited within the same article. Infoboxes are summaries of information, not to contain unique information. Before reinserting that, you would need to compose substantive text for the Eagles article detailing why the relationship is notable enough to mention in the infobox, complete with citations to reliable sources. --Spike Wilbury (talk) 19:03, 30 November 2017 (UTC)
ANI Experiences survey

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. Dispute resolution
How can I finally solve this dispute then? I mean, it is pretty obvious that there isn't going to any more discussion in the talk page, also, the users claimed that considering Communism a Totalitarian and Authoritarian ideology is somehow only a point of view, and that as such, it violated the NPOV rule, I was thinking on starting an RfC but the glossary states the following:
"Remember that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia; all articles must follow the Neutral point of view, Verifiability, and No original research policies."
So, unless I misinterpreted this really badly, or considering Communism totalitarian and authoritarian isn't merely a point of view, what can I do to solve this dispute? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pedro8790 (talk • contribs) 00:39, 19 May 2018 (UTC)

I spend most of my time engaging with students and faculty to ensure that students are properly prepared for what they'll encounter when editing here. I also try to head off the biggest objections people have historically had to using Wikipedia as a teaching tool (and subsequently grooming and encouraging our next generation of editors) like making sure they don't run afoul of MEDRS etc. They're more typically intimidated and discouraged off the project and edit just long enough to complete their coursework. Channel Awesome
In an effort to maintain clarity, I must ask once again that if you have issues with the sources, please take them to the talk page of the article. To accuse me of being in any way affiliated with Channel Awesome is just as asinine as me accusing you of trying to attempt to block information on their behalf. I would like to treated with the same respect I intend to treat you with rather than throwing out baseless accusations. Please join the discussion on the talk page. Thank you. - D33deed33guy —Preceding undated comment added 01:46, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
- I will re-add the information but with more appropriate sources if that is the case. This information is well documented enough to be relevant to the section of the page. I have been editing under a different username because I have only recently reacquired access to this account as I had forgotten my password a few years back. It is not "proof of affiliation". It would be the equivalent of me accusing you of being affiliated with George Harrison or Kingman, Arizona. I will find better sources so the information may be re-added. In the meantime, I would advise you to head over to Donald Trump's Wikipedia article as there is a considerable amount of social media being sourced there and that seems to spike your interest. --D33deed33guy 18:51, 12 September 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by D33deed33guy (talk • contribs)

Help with an involved editor formally closing an RfC
Walter Görlitz has formally closed this RfC: Talk:Boy_(album)#RfC:_Should_two_scores_from_Rolling_Stone,_from_the_same_year,_be_included_in_the_ratings_box?. The votes were 4 to 2, and he was one of the involved voters/comments; in fact he has been involved in the original content dispute and previous discussion that led to me opening the RfC. The RfC tag expired 16:01, 6 November 2018, and he formally closed it with a summary explaining his preference. I reverted this, and relisted the RfC, and he reverted me. And similar to his behavior at a discussion in the recent past (where you reprimanded him), he has been threatening me with a topic ban again. As I explained in this edit summary, the guidelines state "If the matter under discussion is not contentious and the consensus is obvious to the participants, then formal closure is neither necessary nor advisable." And that if it is contentious anyway, an involved editor is not the person to formally close the RfC (WP:CLOSE#Closure procedure) As usual, he has been tone-deaf to what I say. Dan56 (talk) 22:39, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
- Not a threat, a suggestion. I've take it to ANI. Cheers. Walter Görlitz (talk) 22:42, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
- Dan56, was this worked out to your satisfaction? I'm amazed people continue to throw around topic bans as the solution to these types of issues. I suppose if you and Walter avoid each other, that's for the best. --Spike Wilbury (talk) 14:36, 7 December 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, I believe it is resolved. Dan56 (talk) 14:41, 7 December 2018 (UTC)

Hey Spike Wilbury, you blocked user HughMorris15 in October 2017 for unsourced changes, using misleading edit summaries, and disregarding the Manual of Style. I believe this user is still doing the same type of edits a year on. I've reverted 3 of their edits today and added back content that was removed without any mention in the edit summary.
I have warned the user on their talk page with a "uw-delete1" template and i've also asked that they review WP:NOTBROKE. Vistadan 16:30, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

ArbCom 2019 special circular
Administrators must secure their accounts
The Arbitration Committee may require a new RfA if your account is compromised.

This message was sent to all administrators following a recent motion. Thank you for your attention. For the Arbitration Committee, Cameron11598 02:40, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)
ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.
Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.
We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.
For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

2019 US Banknote Contest
US Banknote Contest | ||
---|---|---|
November-December 2019 | ||
There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here |

Your 10/31/19 deletion of edited caption in George Harrison article and reversion to caption incorrectly describing Beatles as wearing "Indian" clothing
Per Wikipedia article "The Fool (design collective)" . . .
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fool_(design_collective)
. . . "The Fool's best known artworks are those they created for the Beatles in 1966–67. They include: . . . the clothes worn in the "I Am the Walrus" segment of the 1967 film Magical Mystery Tour television film;"
Photo in the following article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magical_Mystery_Tour_(film) . . .
. . . shows the Beatles wearing the clothes described in the edited caption.

As George Harrison put it, “The Apple Boutique started as an excellent idea…what we were trying to do was to sell all the stuff that we liked.”[6] John Lennon wanted it to be “cheap, but good quality.”[7] In addition to clothes, they sold books, jewelry, music, spiritual objects, instruments, paintings, and furniture – “a Garden of Eden for lovers of hip clothes and all the trappings of a beautiful life.”[8] The Beatles selected Amsterdam artistic collective The Fool to design the clothing and shop interiors. They had previously worked with the four Dutch designers on a televised “All You Need is Love” performance and The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour film.[9]

OTHER CITATIONS--:
Although you can see Marijke and Simon’s fashions on the Beatles during the “I am the Walrus” sequence in Magical Mystery Tour

How, then, to explain Marijke Koger, member of the design collective the Fool (which created, for instance, the costumes for the Magical Mystery Tour film)
==
o The previous caption, now reverted, is factually incorrect and misleading to Wikipedia readers. No source is cited for the claim that the clothing the Beatles were wearing was "Indian." The reason no source is cited is that the clothing was not in fact "Indian."
o The edited caption is factually correct and provides useful information to Wikipedia readers. The clothes in the Magical Mystery Tour film, from which the still photo was taken, were unquestionably designed (and, in fact, made) by The Fool design collective, which deserves credit (keeping in mind that two of its members are alive and still active at an advanced age, and, having limited means, would benefit from not having their creativity and originality more than half a century ago ignored by Wikipedia).

How do you suggest we proceed?
George Harrison article
I cited authoritative website as source for correction of caption of still from Magical Mystery Tour. Thanks for your help!

Trying to understand how to make edits
Hoping to get some direction as to how to make edits. I've been asked by Sean Kanan to help edit his page. He sent me an update bio he wrote. I attempted to make a couple of edits to see if they would be accepted but see they were removed. On behalf of Sean Kanan please advise us how to update his page.

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled
A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
