A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Spike Wilbury.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

New Page Review needs your help

Hi Spike Wilbury,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.

Guideline and policy news

• A discussion to workshop proposals to amend the administrator inactivity policy at Wikipedia talk:Administrators has been in process since late December 2016.
• Wikipedia:Pending changes/Request for Comment 2016 closed with no consensus for implementing Pending changes level 2 with new criteria for use.
• Following an RfC, an activity requirement is now in place for bots and bot operators.

Technical news

• When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
• Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
• The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

I'm doing some leg work. I performed a reverse image search on the image and didn't find anything, so we will have to assume he made it. Hi Dan56, I'm pondering the best course of action here. I'm positive this user believes they are improving articles (and in some places there probably are excessive lists of "occupations" next to people's names) but their behavior grows odd when they encounter disagreement. He's under no obligation to respond to the RfC, unless of course he resumes edit warring. If he's opening discussions and generally respecting the outcome of those discussions there's not much to be done other than treating it as any other disagreement. If he gets into further edit warring behavior, though, I would consider opening an administrative noticeboard thread about his behavior to get other editor input. To be clear, I would not take any administrative action here since I have been involved in some of the content disagreements, nor do I think the situation has risen to that level. Quering your reversion of my edit to Geddy Lee

It's no big deal, but I'm wondering why you reverted the edit where I added Geddy Lee to Category:Canadian collectors. Your edit summary, "Meaning what?" means nothing, ironically.

He's Canadian and he collects things. That's what the category is for – it's as simple as that. The category is not meant to be reserved for people known primarily as collectors, if that's what you were thinking. He's also currently listed as a notable collector in article collecting, and whereas I don't necessarily agree that he ought to be so listed, I don't care enough to make that call. That someone listed as a notable collector should fail to be included in some subcategory of Category:Collectors was a discrepency, which I fixed. 121.45.72.211 (talk) 13:45, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

If you look at Category:Collectors by nationality there are several that contain only one or a few people. "Canadian collectors" is not marked as a container category. Jimi Hendrix edit

Hello Spike

May I ask what was wrong with the correction I made? It originally said that the Jimi Hendrix single "Hey Joe" was released on October 23, 1966, which was obviously wrong because records are simply not released on Sundays. I already knew the correct date was December 16th 1966 anyway (a far more feasible Friday) and I provided a link to confirm that fact. In what way did it not conform to Wikipedia's verifiability policy?

If I see any glaring errors like that on any website, my first instinct is to correct them no matter what I have to do in order to achieve that. If that particular error is not corrected by me I may ask a friend to correct it instead. I don't mind as long as it is corrected. I just can't stand to see such obvious errors going uncorrected.

Hi, it may seem to be an obvious error to you, but we have a policy that things must be verifiable by reliable sources. The source you provided is a database that looks to be built on user submissions. That wouldn't meet our definition of a reliable source. How would I, or any other reader know that? Citations to reliable sources need to be in the relevant article and we can't rely on the reader clicking away to find them in related articles. Additionally, infoboxes should never house content that's not discussed and cited within the same article. Infoboxes are summaries of information, not to contain unique information. Before reinserting that, you would need to compose substantive text for the Eagles article detailing why the relationship is notable enough to mention in the infobox, complete with citations to reliable sources. --Spike Wilbury (talk) 19:03, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

Dispute resolution

How can I finally solve this dispute then? I mean, it is pretty obvious that there isn't going to any more discussion in the talk page, also, the users claimed that considering Communism a Totalitarian and Authoritarian ideology is somehow only a point of view, and that as such, it violated the NPOV rule, I was thinking on starting an RfC but the glossary states the following:

"Remember that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia; all articles must follow the Neutral point of view, Verifiability, and No original research policies."

No, we've never interacted. I'm boots on the ground at this point. I spend most of my time engaging with students and faculty to ensure that students are properly prepared for what they'll encounter when editing here. I also try to head off the biggest objections people have historically had to using Wikipedia as a teaching tool (and subsequently grooming and encouraging our next generation of editors) like making sure they don't run afoul of MEDRS etc. They're more typically intimidated and discouraged off the project and edit just long enough to complete their coursework. I will re-add the information but with more appropriate sources if that is the case. This information is well documented enough to be relevant to the section of the page. I have been editing under a different username because I have only recently reacquired access to this account as I had forgotten my password a few years back. It is not "proof of affiliation". It would be the equivalent of me accusing you of being affiliated with George Harrison or Kingman, Arizona. I will find better sources so the information may be re-added. Help with an involved editor formally closing an RfC

Walter Görlitz has formally closed this RfC: Talk:Boy_(album)#RfC:_Should_two_scores_from_Rolling_Stone,_from_the_same_year,_be_included_in_the_ratings_box?. The votes were 4 to 2, and he was one of the involved voters/comments; in fact he has been involved in the original content dispute and previous discussion that led to me opening the RfC. The RfC tag expired 16:01, 6 November 2018, and he formally closed it with a summary explaining his preference. I reverted this, and relisted the RfC, and he reverted me. And similar to his behavior at a discussion in the recent past (where you reprimanded him), he has been threatening me with a topic ban again. As I explained in this edit summary, the guidelines state "If the matter under discussion is not contentious and the consensus is obvious to the participants, then formal closure is neither necessary nor advisable." And that if it is contentious anyway, an involved editor is not the person to formally close the RfC (WP:CLOSE#Closure procedure) As usual, he has been tone-deaf to what I say. Disruptive user

Hey Spike Wilbury, you blocked user HughMorris15 in October 2017 for unsourced changes, using misleading edit summaries, and disregarding the Manual of Style. I believe this user is still doing the same type of edits a year on. I've reverted 3 of their edits today and added back content that was removed without any mention in the edit summary.

I have warned the user on their talk page with a "uw-delete1" template and i've also asked that they review WP:NOTBROKE. Vistadan 16:30, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

Why have I received this message? All administrators are receiving it. What prompted you to send this message? Recently, several Wikipedia admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh Request for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account. What do I need to do? Only to follow the instructions in this message. Check that your password is unique (not reused across sites). Check that your password is strong (not simple or guessable). Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

2019 US Banknote Contest

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future.
