Nao Bustamante edit

Could you put Nao Bustamante's page back up, or should I just start a new one? I went looking for it as I teach her work (am a professor at UC Riverside, and write about the artist - and sometimes edit pages of artists I research - so that my students are at least getting accurate information). I've organized a handful of others to work on this with me. But it'd be easier, probably to edit the old page than to create a new one. I haven't seen the old one so I'm not sure what the best path is.

Please advise.

Thank you,

J. Doyle — Preceding unsigned comment added by Judyholliday (talkcontribs) 16:12, 1 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

The old article massively failed the notability requirements for people - being the sister of a politician is not notable (it's not inherited) and the article reeked of being a thinly veiled advertisment piece. I would suggest an entire re-write looking at WP:Notability (people) and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biographies and Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons - Wikipedia:Starting an article can be a big help as well. If you would like a sandbox version of the old article, just leave me a note here. Skier Dude (talk) 17:27, 1 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

So, yes, I would like a sandbox version. I haven't edited on wikip for a few years, seems like processes have changed (esp talk page). I think it was kindof a shame that the page was just taken down: but it sounds like no one was paying attention to it. If I can access a sandbox, can I edit it? Or should I just start over. I didn't want to start over if what I started was going to be subject to deletion. I want to get something minimal up there - a stub sort of thing - so that others can contribute & edit. Judyholliday (talk) 19:57, 1 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

A user sandbox version of the last revision of the article can be found at User:Judyholliday/Nao Bustamante sandbox. You can see from the cleanup tags on it the issues that need to be addressed. Skier Dude (talk) 22:04, 1 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I am sorry to bother you with this but being a new user I am not familiar with Wikipedia's rules and regulations. The message I see is as follows:

What do I need to do in order for the image to be re-posted? I have obtained this image by Mr. Vassilis Krommidas himself, who happens to be a good friend. Thank you and best regards Maria Makri (talk) 07:52, 2 February 2012 (UTC)Maria MakriReply

File move question edit

Hey Dude, what should I do after I rename a file —

Sumanch (talk) 05:39, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

If the old/redirect has no links, then just tag it as G8. If there's a reason to keep the old file name (things link to it), you can leave it as is, or you can update all of the links from the redirect to the new name and then ask for the G8. Skier Dude (talk) 05:42, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

User talk:Deepmath edit

Hi Skier Dude. Why did you delete User talk:Deepmath

05:07, 22 September 2009 Skier Dude (talk | contribs) deleted "User talk:Deepmath" ‎ (G8: Page dependent on a deleted or nonexistent page)

This would not appear to be a legitimate reason. If there is no good reason for it to be deleted, would you please undelete. Also, if you happen to know, can you say why Deepmath (talk · contribs) is blocked? (I guess that it relates to stuff deleted from his talk page?). --SmokeyJoe (talk) 13:39, 4 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

It's been restored - there were some odd page moves going on there (I deleted it redlink redirect) The account was blocked (per admin note) for attcking other users & then disruptive editing of the talk page. Skier Dude (talk) 01:06, 5 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for answering. What do you mean it has been restored? It was recreated 20 Jan 2012? Isn't there a long history of deleted revision? I don't see any page moves, or page-move archives of his user_talk page.
I found the blocking discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/IncidentArchive558#User:Deepmath. It was maybe a bit bold, at indefinite. I think the guy was only temporarily responding poorly to several XfD discussions concerning his created articles and userspace pages. I note that he is lurking, for example. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 01:41, 5 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Oops-you're right, it was recreated. However I'm not involved in the wikidrama in this; all I did is delete the redirect (talk -> User) - you need to discuss the rest of this with User:Jpgordon who did/undid the redirect and the re-block or User:Georgewilliamherbert who did the block and deletion of the user page. As I know nothing about the history in this, I'll leave this to those that were involved to deal with the issue, including the page moves, as I'm unclear why these were done. Skier Dude (talk) 01:51, 5 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
I understand you. Thank you. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 02:41, 5 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Image deleted, what do I need to do? edit

Hi Skier Dude,

I noticed you have deleted an image I've uploaded on the page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oleg_Bakhtiyarov I took this image from Oleg Bakhtiyarov's official web site where he is references as one of the lecturers: http://www.university.kiev.ua/person Here is the image link: http://www.university.kiev.ua/sites/default/files/person/olegb.jpg I considered this is a valid "fair use" scenario, since it is like a "company promoting their services in public domain" (I saw that description somewhere in Wikipedia HOWTO).

Could you please guide me into what I need to do to publish this image correctly? I am new to Wikipedia editing and these legal issues are very cryptic to me.

Hello, I was hoping for a full protection, in my opinion the ip edits are in good faith and accurate to all the sources. It would force all parties involved to go to the talk page. I did not want to get in the middle of edit warring.--UnQuébécois (talk) 03:16, 6 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

It looked like the majority of the back & forth was with 218.250.159.25 & registered users; I've watchlisted the page and if it starts again, I'll bump it up - if I'm not online & it starts up again, just pop a note on rfpp again and explain the situation (feel free to point to here if there's any questions); I always try to err on the side of caution (lightest 'hammer' and shortest time) Skier Dude (talk) 03:23, 6 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I happened to this page somehow, and noticed the back and forth, did a little looking at refs and agreed with the Ip user! I am more outspoken in places where I have a little more knowledge, but try to err on the side of caution also! Thanks.--UnQuébécois (talk) 03:26, 6 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Dear UnQuébécois & Skier Dude, sorry for stepping into a discussion that I was not originally a part of. Incidentally I have also exchanged messages with the same IP user on different subject. He is very aggressive and is not complying to Wikipedia policies despite being told several times. He has his own version of the processes. Note: I am not saying that the content he is trying to update is wrong; it might be well right and I pointed it out as well to him. Read here. Updates have been made without citing proper sources. No one is telling him NOT to update, instead the user has been told to follow processes. Now that you guys have protected the page without actually reviewing what was earlier done on the page, you have justified his doings. Atleast discuss with other editors involved before taking such an action. One of the people involved is very senior Admin with close to 200,000 edits. Check User talk:218.250.159.25 and read how many different experienced users are involved. May I please ask you HOW is the name change (to Stephen Huỳnh) in Infobox justified (along with other actions) without citing proper sources? You are endorsing this; are you? Don’t be unfair to other experienced members just because someone is being very persistent and making lots of noise. Cheers AKS 08:04, 6 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Request for Interview Regarding Wikipedia Bots edit

Greetings Skier Dude-

My name is Randall Livingstone, and I am a graduate student at the University of Oregon, currently collecting data for my dissertation on Wikipedia editors who create and use bots and assisted editing tools, as well as editors involved in the initial and/or ongoing creation of bot policies on Wikipedia. As a member of the bot community and bot operator, I would very much like to interview you for the project at a time and in a method that is most convenient for you (Gchat, another IM client, Skype, email, telephone, etc.). I am completely flexible and can work with your schedule. The interview will take approximately 45-60 minutes.

My dissertation project has been approved both by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University of Oregon, and by the Research Committee at the Wikimedia Foundation. You can find more information on the project on my meta page.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I look forward to hearing from you to set up a time to chat. Thank you very much.

Undeletion Request edit

Hello Skier Dude, yesterday I transfered File:GingerTVPrologo.png to Commons and tagged the local copy with {{now commons}}. It was nominated for deletion on commons because, although it is public domain in the United States, it apparently meets the threshold of originality in the United Kingdom. Therefore, it can't be hosted on commons, but it is acceptable for use here. Could you please undelete the local copy. Thank you, Alpha_Quadrant (talk) 23:57, 7 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Done, you may want to take a gander at it as it's got text-logo and a FuR. Skier Dude (talk) 02:40, 8 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
I have corrected the tags. As it is a simple textlogo, it fails the threshold of originality in the United States, so I tagged it with {{PD-textlogo}}. Alpha_Quadrant (talk) 02:52, 8 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Skier Dude, hope you're well. When you have a moment, and if it's not too much trouble, could you please close the above discussion? It should be fairly straightforward. Thanks, FASTILY (TALK) 04:14, 9 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

File:Pakistan Railways Map.png edit

I think the uploader does hold copyright and simply was never told to look at WP:Permissions, but I might be missing something, thus this post. Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 02:55, 11 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

There are multiple notifications of copyright violations; he was warned multiple times about this contribution (4x), other images File:PR Map.png File:Pakistan Railways Network.png, spam links on Pakistan Railways, as well as an AN/I discussion about him. If you note, with all of these warnings he never offered any explanation or used a talk page. He can offer something on the talk page about this now, but I don't see a reason for a non-communicative possible copyright violator to continue without explanation from him. Skier Dude (talk) 03:07, 11 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ps. I've watchlisted the talk page to watch for a response. Skier Dude (talk) 03:08, 11 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
It is your call, I come from the copyright/spam side: a user got mistagged and blocked for posting his own map and a link to the facebook channel of Pakistan Railways, and failing to talk back. The map is here [1] and there are all signs it is created by Adnan Zafar and that Adnan Zafar is user:Adnanrail. Yes, there is no solid proof, which is why WP:Permission. Materialscientist (talk) 03:21, 11 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
I think the wait-and-watch is the best call at this time; if the OTRS is provided, of course the block can be reversed - I did note that there is a (c) restriction at the source, which seems to indicate that the OTRS would be required in any case. Skier Dude (talk) 03:28, 11 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
I doubt a blocked user will email permission for deleted image, or even reply at all. He might eventually get blocked for incompetence, and this is the major problems with India/Pakistan articles/editors, or he might eventually learn and help out there (where no-one actually helps). It's a tricky issue, and we normally do not have time to educate (and often just follow our taggers), I just got upset by our taggers for not thinking at all in this case. Materialscientist (talk) 03:45, 11 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
I agree - I just get frustrated seeing the same images showing up again and again with no explanations - hmmmm, maybe a ban on all Madonna & Lady Gaga fake album covers? :o) Skier Dude (talk) 03:48, 11 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of File:Americanwarmewmrev.tif edit

Hey Skier Dude, I'm somewhat new to wikipedia and have been having some trouble. I uploaded File:Americanwarmewmrev.tif to use for an article I am writing for the non-profit. There is no copyright on the logo, so I don't understand how this could be removed for copyright infringement. Secondly, I am an intern with this non-profit and as I stated in the pictures description, we own the picture and give anyone else the right to use it, and if they wish, we would like them to mention our website when doing so. Perhaps I have the wrong tag for the picture.

There is no copyright on the picture so there is no copyright infringement. As the owner of this picture I give wikipedia and anyone else the right to use it. Please restore this picture to working order, or tell me how to make this right.

MSU Interview edit

Dear Skier Dude,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Citrusleaf page deleted - can we get it restored? edit

Hi Skier Dude,

I work for the database company Citrusleaf, and we just noticed that our page (and all of the references to us in Wikipedia) have been deleted. The deletion notes say that the page pointed to non-existant content - I don't know what those links might have been, but we're more than willing to fix them up. We're a growing startup, and it's sort of painful right now to see that all of our competitors have Wikipedia pages when ours has been taken down.

Thanks, --Carolyn 67.180.18.168 (talk) 08:25, 16 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

The article you're speaking of is Citrusleaf database which was deleted becuase it was considered as WP:SPAM. It appears to be a non-notable business with no external references. It appears that there were also conflict of interest problems - you've also got those issues as an employee. You might want to put a request at WP:Articles for creation to see if you can get an independent person to work on the createion of an article. Skier Dude (talk) 04:37, 17 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

You unfairly Deleted an Image edit

Hi,

My name is Toni Roberts. I work for McPherson, Inc. We have a Wikipedia entry and also a website of our own ( mcphersoninc.com ) We reused a couple of our own images from our website on the Wikipedia entry.

I was asked to fix the Wikipedia entry, but I have zero experience at this and it was difficult to figure out the coding and the image permissions and then you go and delete my work the very next day! I didn't even get the seven days allowed by Wikipedia. That's unfair.

I assure you, I am sitting in the McPherson facility. I can go around the corner and see the instruments or look at posters made of the images we had on this site. We ARE the owners of these images. They were shot with camaras by McPherson personnell. So of course we can give ourselves permission to use these photos both here and on our website.

If you have an objection, please explain it and tell me what more I can do...bearing in mind I don't even know how to get back to the images page to change the permissions or to replace the coding (it took me a LONG time to figure out how to do what little I did!)

Thank you in advance and have a great day.

G7 deletion of Medicine Tour edit

I see that you deleted Medicine Tour under a tag of G7, but I do not feel that this redirect as a result of a page move was a proper deletion because the author was not the only one to add substantial content to the article either before or after the page move. Also I feel this is a plausible search term for The Medicine Tour and the page moves should be reflected in the page history to have the entire timeline of the article correct, so I ask that you please undelete the redirect/page move. File licensing and summary -- what more do you expect? edit

Hi,
can you please add whatever is missing on the file description pages of 1 2 3 4 5 6 so that you won't mark them for deletion again in the future?
Amalthea 00:48, 20 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

And now you revert me? With rollback? Why? Amalthea 00:52, 20 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
I see you just restored the incorrect tags and do not find it necessary to reply to me. Let me detail what I already summarized in the file page history last year: In April 2010, when I noticed the images with the watermarks, I researched them thinking they were copyright violations. I found them at the clustershot account of George Bekris (note the account there is also "Mstrsail"), contacted him, and confirmed that the uploader with the account mstrsail (talk · contribs) is he himself, George Bekris. The uploader took those images, owns copyright, uploaded them himself, has correctly licensed them, and provided correct summary information. Per his request I deleted 6 of his images, e.g. File:Intrepid22.jpg. The others could stay.
So again, this is not a case where a third party claims to have permission of the creator. The creator and copyright owner uploaded them himself, and I have double-checked that. This is no case that can lead to any legal trouble unless you do not trust my word that I actually talked to him. Give me a policy that requires this to go through OTRS.
Amalthea 01:28, 20 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Apologies on the response - I actually responded on the uploader's page [2]. The issue here simply is that there is no proof of your discussion - not that you had it or not... that's what the WP:OTRS system is in place for - There's no clear link between the user name and the watermark - and when you and I are both gone, there's nothing proving that you or I had a discussion off-wiki. I'm simply trying to make sure that the proof is there so that this issue doesn't come up again and again because of the incongruence between the names & the lack of proof that Mr. Berkis did release the (C). And again, sorry for the reply at the wrong place - my bad :( Skier Dude (talk) 01:54, 20 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
p.s. a) I wouldn't have left that user's message on your talk page. b) These images, once (c) verified shouldn't be here, they belong on commons. Skier Dude (talk) 02:06, 20 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
pps. This is why I ultimately decided to disable e-mail for wiki work, as 3/4 of my e-mails were getting forwarded to OTRS so there was proof of these off-wiki discussions. Skier Dude (talk) 02:11, 20 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Heh, yes, kinda felt like you thought I was the uploader. ;)
Hmm. I still think that the note I left in the file history should be sufficient to show that the copyright problems suggested by the watermark were investigated and resolved. That note will still be here even if I stop editing, and should be sufficient for every policy I know.
However, since it's easy for me to forward the mail exchange I had to OTRS, and probably easier than convincing you of my viewpoint, I have done so. Do you find the note on File:PeteandRoger.jpg sufficient?
Amalthea 16:33, 20 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'm presuming you're going to add the ticket to his other uploads as well---gracias! Skier Dude (talk) 03:22, 21 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
I have now done so. Thanks, Amalthea 08:38, 21 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

listas edit

I see you were adding listas to talk articles today. Could I ask you to refrain from fixing any more. It's not that you are doing anything wrong. I'm getting to them, but I also add work-group, other banners, Persondata, Defaultsort, fix any cleanups. So, you are doing redundant work at the moment.

I and another editor got Category:Biography articles without listas parameter down from 65,000 to 0. I do look at all new living biographies every day plus any articles without listas showing up in the category. I took a break for two weeks in December... 3,000 new living articles plus 3,000 new dead articles (all from New Zealand) showed up, so it is taking me some time to clear out the category again. Not to mention the new ones that show up everyday. 142 new ones today. I can't wait for summer when it drops down to around 80 a day. Bgwhite (talk) 09:56, 20 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Oh, could I see the AWB module you run on your bot? I need to do something similar on my bot for some runs I want to do. Might as well not re-invent the wheel. Bgwhite (talk) 10:04, 20 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
No mod - it's just a kludge using magic words & a feeble attempt to reverse first & last with the space as the delimiter - doesn't work too well & need to check each one by hand... wish there was something easier... Skier Dude (talk) 03:21, 21 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Deleted photograph - Mirkwoodwikiphotosmall.jpg edit

Hi,

I'm hoping you'll help me. I'm also hoping you'll forgive me if I'm doing something wrong in contacting you in this way. I have tried to follow the correct procedure but am still not sure I've got it right.

I was flattered to see that the photo was thought to look professional and therefore might not be in the public domain. I'm not a professional but I did create the `composite' image myself on my PC using Corel Photobook from my own photos. I'm not sure what I should do now and would really appreciate any help you can give. The image is entirely my own work.

Yours sincerely,

1D Vs 2D edit

Thank you for replacing the Hawaii Seals with one dimensional images. However, the State of Hawaii seal is best represented by 2-dimensional representation, such as on a coin or medal. If one goes to the Capital building of the State of Hawaii, one sees a large 2-dimensional model of the seal. Not a flat computer generated image. I see that you are interested in establishing a visual standard of the Hawaii seals, but are they the official versions? They look somewhat different from the 2-D models. I understand that your purpose is to establish a visual standard (self made by you) of the Hawaii seals, but are they the official versions? They do not look like official versions. Please re-verify with Hawaii State government officials.

Please reconsider restoring the actual 2-D image for the State of Hawaii seal or providing additional images officially used on coins, medals, etc.... They provide the vibrancy that 1-D can never achieve.

The removed silver medal image is an official 2-D representations of the seal, approved by the Hawaii Senate. Has your versions been approved by Hawaii State Government? Waipahu96797 (talk) 09:54, 22 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello Skier Dude, i've created the logo through drawing with inkscape, because the actual gif logo has a low quality. Is it possible to add it into the article of A.S. Casale Calcio, including to modify the license? On the other hand, the designed license is contrary to the gif logo too, because copyright enjoys. See page of Casale Calcio. 1968 Texas gubernatorial election edit

Skier Dude, I added the 1968 and 1970 Texas gubernatorial election pages on Wikipedia, but they were removed for some reason.

File:June 2011 Dirt - Ghaze x Dieselryder.jpg edit

I've been thinking of pictures like that. If it is illegal to grow the plant it is not likely that we can persuade someone to say "It is my plant and I took the photo and my adress is ...". We have a "rule" with grafitti that we can keep it even if it is copyrighted because it is illegal to make so it is not likely that someone will claim copyright. So I wonder if we could do the same here. --MGA73 (talk) 21:42, 24 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

The issue here isn't the subject, as there's no way to verify where/when/by whom it was taken. The issue on-wiki is that there's no verification of the release of (c) by the person that actually took the picture. I guess that could lead to a longer-discussion (probably here somewhere, don't know where - I always contact the foundation and ask for oversight when I find these) about pictures of possibly illegal content/subject matter. Skier Dude2 (talk) 22:14, 24 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Normally we do not oversight files uploaded without permission so I see no reason to oversight that image. Anyway I asked the uploader if it is illegal to grow where he/she is etc. Lets see what happens. --MGA73 (talk) 23:03, 24 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Photos for deletion edit

Hey Skier Dude,

I see you tagged the Konica logo I replaced for deletion. I actually have a couple other pics that I replaced today that I need to get deleted as well. I have them tagged for speedy deletion, but they've been up for hours. One of them (the Minolta logo) I uploaded both versions of, so I really don't see why it would be a problem. It's located here. The other is the logo for Reprise Records. I replaced the jpeg with an svg, but the jpeg is still hanging around. It's here if you would like to take a look. Thanks! Jane Gazzo photo edit

Hello. I wasn't following but noticed that just today the photo "File:Gazzo1.jpg" was deleted and no longer shows in the Jane Gazzo article in Wikipedia. Didn't User:Satchett assert in 2008 when it was up for deletion that they owned copyright to it? Just a thought. Best wishes. --- (Bob) Wikiklrsc (talk) 20:41, 26 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

The person did claim ownership, but since there is no connection between the red-linked User:Satchett and the picture, there's no way to confirm that this was really the person in question. There was a 2005 version of the image that cites risetv.co.uk as the actual source/owners of the headshot, which leads to additional questions about the authenticity of the claim made by Satchett. I guess that if the article is ever resurrected someone could do some research into the authenticity of the image, but given that the only version seems to be from here, which is a placeholder site now, it might be a bit difficult! Skier Dude (talk) 00:00, 27 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your explanation. I take your points. We'll see what pans out from all this. The archived page in the Wayback Machine wasn't just now accessible to me. Bests. --- (Bob) Wikiklrsc (talk) 02:14, 27 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Skier Dude,

Thanks for replying to my query re deletion of the above pic.

I note you say I need to produce the original source photo from which I made the collage. I still have the original photo in my possession - it is not a professional photo but was taken for me by a friend using my camera. All I have done is create a collage of head shots using Corel Photobook.

I am happy to upload the original photo but fear it might be deleted for the same reason as my collage was. I will be very grateful if you can find a few minutes to advise me what to do.

Many thanks for your help.
