Welcome to Wikipedia!

Hello Serein (renamed because of SUL), welcome to Wikipedia!

I noticed nobody had said hi yet... Hi!

If you feel a change is needed, feel free to make it yourself! Wikipedia is a wiki, so anyone (yourself included) can edit any article by following the Edit this page link. Wikipedia convention is to be bold and not be afraid of making mistakes. If you're not sure how editing works, have a look at How to edit a page, or try out the Sandbox to test your editing skills.

You might like some of these links and tips:

If, for some reason, you are unable to fix a problem yourself, feel free to ask someone else to do it. Wikipedia has a vibrant community of contributors who have a wide range of skills and specialties, and many of them would be glad to help. As well as the wiki community pages there are IRC Channels, where you are more than welcome to ask for assistance.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page. Thanks and happy editing, -- Alf melmac 08:20, 8 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Semicolon-delimited coauthors on cite book

edit
You wrote on my talk page:

Good spot with that site! I think introducing ten-colour notation to Wikipedia might be impractical, however.

I'm not sure where I stand on citation style, but I think introducing a new Wikipedian style would step on the toes of too many APA/Chicago/Harvard/MLA fans. There's probably a good case for sticking to different styles for different fields, too. —Serein 20:42, 24 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

There's nothing to stop us putting CSS classes on each component which would allow people to colour them as they wanted  . Actually I wonder if it would short-circuit the arguments as to which style is better if we simply took the best bits of each and created a Wikipedia Citation Standard. Irish apostrophes

edit

Dear Serein: As a spanking new Wikignome/fairy/librarian, you have flooded a large number of my articles with apostrophe corrections. No problem there - but are you picking on everyone else as well? Or are you solely interested in 16thC. Irish history? (You can be done for that, you know.) And why Serein?--shtove 23:25, 28 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

  The Original Barnstar
That you're a librarian really helped matters in improving the section on "Care Bears" books! For bringing up forth one of the first steps in expanding this page before our next peer review, I'm giving you this barnstar (my first time with this) and $10 worth of Wikicash. (Hope you spend the latter wisely!)

Tenderheart Bear: For being one of the kindest Wikipedians around us in recent memory, and on behalf of the Kingdom of Caring, I'll be giving you a pink balloon and a warm, nice hug. Thanks for helping us!

Minor Barnstar

edit

I've given you a well-deserved Barnstar - it's the first I've ever given, so feel free to leave me a note if you feel it was inappropriate or to move, edit or remove it if you don't want it. GreetingsEarthling 23:47, 20 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Is Pendleton SC linked with the whole of the Outer Hebrides or just the town of Stornoway?--JBellis 15:50, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

In that case the Stornoway page is wrong.--JBellis 16:44, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I see that you added to the Portsmouth page that Portsmouth is twinned with Lakewood, Colorado and Portsmouth, Virginia. I'm afraid that's incorrect; Portsmouth is twinned only with Duisberg, Germany, and Caen, France. [1] shows that the city only has 'sister' and 'friendship' links with the towns you added. I've corrected this; hope that's ok for you. DWaterson 17:19, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I cannot find any confirmation that Newport is twinned with Annapolis. Is this just a friendship link? Marky-Son 15:14, 29 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your very kind notice. Your help on the citation templates is very much appreciated too (it's always good to have real world experts on a subject on Wikipedia). It is somewhat sad that it requires adminship to edit these templates today (and going through RfA is rather painful).

I hope I can serve on the citation templates now with my new admin bits. Just note that my adminship is not meant to have more weight over anyone else here. If I ever make a bad judgement, let me know. My goal is to enact consensus (which is not easy on the citation templates). Have a nice day! --Ligulem 09:43, 3 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I was really impressed by this edit to Victor Davis Hanson. I've done similar things to smaller lists of books; that one would have taken me a few hours, but took you less than one. Amazing! Thanks for the great work, CWC(talk) 01:55, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome! I find I can't leave incomplete lists like that alone. :) —Serein 08:06, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Shine- The Best of the Early Years.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Shine- The Best of the Early Years.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 19:39, 26 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

usurpation requested

edit

Request for Usurpation

edit

Hello, Serein. A request has been made at Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations to usurp, or "take over", your username because you have not used it to edit, and another user would like to use it to edit. Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations says that any unused username may be usurped if the user is given seven days notice to object and does not do so.

If you have an email set in your preferences, you should be getting an email from a bureaucrat or changing username clerk explaining how to consent or object to this process.

If you do not object to being renamed to a new username in order for another user to utilize the name you currently have, please log in and post a reply here saying so (you may also tell us what username you would like to be renamed to, or we will provide you with a generic one).

If you do nothing: the request will be filled after seven days, and your account will be moved to a generic username. You may request that it be moved to a new username of your choice at any time.

If you object to being renamed: please log in and make an edit. You may make an edit here saying "No", you may make an edit to blank this page, or any other edit you like; making any edit at all prevents your username from being usurped, because users with edits cannot have their usernames usurped.

Please note that even if your current username is usurped, you can still edit and your data will not be lost; your preferences, watchlist, and other user settings will be transferred to a new username.

Thank you for your time. Sereine (talk) 00:22, 17 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
