Speedy deletion nomination of User:Saltyseashaman

edit

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. A tag has been placed on User:Saltyseashaman requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section U5 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to consist of writings, information, discussions, or activities not closely related to Wikipedia's goals. Please note that Wikipedia is not a free web hosting service. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. GPL93 (talk) 20:33, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Why are you suggesting this be deleted? Saltyseashaman (talk) 20:46, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Because your userpage is intended for basic information about yourself, your interests and goals as they relate to editing Wikipedia, as well as disclosures of conflicts of interest and paid editing. Although a lot of freedom is allowed in personalizing your user page, it is not:
The user page guidelines have additional information on what is and what is not considered acceptable content. Please use your user sandbox or the draft article space to practice editing or to create new articles. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 21:14, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Justin Eggen moved to draftspace

edit

An article you recently created, Justin Eggen, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. GPL93 (talk) 20:34, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

The page JUSTIN EGGEN is meant to help bring awareness and credibility to the poet and the genre of war poetry. All citations and references were pulled from written articles, public interviews, and articles from published books. Saltyseashaman (talk) 20:47, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Most of your sources are not considered acceptable by Wikipedia's standards. To be considered notable enough for inclusion, a topic must have already received significant coverage in multiple reliable and independent sources.
Sources that are considered reliable have an established reputation for fact-checking and editorial oversight. This heavily favours mainstream news organizations, academic press, and reputable publishers of newspapers, magazines and books. Self-published sources have no editorial oversight and are therefore unreliable. This includes social media, blogs and Internet forums.
Sources are considered independent if they have no personal, political or financial interest in the subject. Therefore, sources affiliated with the subject lack the required independence, as they have an inherent conflict of interest.
Even if a source is reliable and independent, a source that consists of an interview with the subject is a primary source. These must be used with care because it is easy to misuse them.
As well, the tone of your draft is very promotional. You said that your intent is to "bring awareness and credibility" to this person, but that is not Wikipedia's purpose. We do not help a subject to gain notability; we write about subjects that are already notable. Wikipedia articles are paraphrased summaries of material about a topic previously published in reliable, independent sources. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 21:35, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
To edit this to make it not "promotional" what would need to be done? Because I went into this to build out a page for a notable veteran 'war poet' to help the awareness and credibility to Post-9/11 Veteran War Poetry. It was my goal to make more pages with the two other notable Veteran Poets, (David Rose & Leo Jenkins), which, collectively have spearheaded the Veteran Poetry Community. Saltyseashaman (talk) 21:42, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
One last note: if you are Justin Eggen himself, then it is highly inadvisable for you to write about yourself. You are incapable of being an objective judge of your own notability; you will find it very difficult to write about yourself with the required neutral point of view; and you will not be allowed to use any self-authored sources or unpublished personal knowledge or experience.
Even if at some point you do become notable enough for inclusion, you will never have any right of ownership or control over an article about you. Both good and bad information about you (provided it is reliably sourced, neutrally written with proper balance) is considered fair game. That is why you should not think of a Wikipedia article about you as something to be proud of.
In addition to the conflict of interest guide and autobiography guidelines, you should review the essay entitled Wikipedia is not about YOU. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 21:44, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Drm310: I'd say this is a pretty likely scenario, given that this account has this username is an exact match for several social media accounts of Eggen's. GPL93 (talk) 21:52, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
I've only found 1 social media account with this name? where are the others? Saltyseashaman (talk) 21:55, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Saltyseashaman, to make a draft not promotional, you would need to forget about anything you know personally about him; discard any sources associated with him (his own works, his publishers, any social media, etc.); and then search for extensive coverage about him (not just passing mentions) from reliable mainstream sources. Again, assuming that you are not him. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 22:00, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:Justin Eggen

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:Justin Eggen, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

Why?

Hello, Saltyseashaman. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Draft:Justin Eggen, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

I never wanted to "Promote" anyone, it was always the goal to help these artists grow their awareness, and by building out a Wiki page for them so the world can search "War Poetry" and not just WW1 poetry arises, but rather War Poets who are alive and here now. Saltyseashaman (talk) 21:44, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
"Growing awareness" = promotion. As I mentioned above, a person/place/thing must already be notable to deserve a Wikipedia article. See Wikipedia:Yes, it is promotion. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 21:46, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Well, if someone buys a David Rose book, and then searches for him online, wouldn't it be more advantageous that there be a encyclopedia built out so the reader can learn more about the author from a trusted source? It's not about promotion. Saltyseashaman (talk) 21:49, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
David Rose would need to have already been extensively covered by reliable, independent sources. If so, then those sources could be cited in a Wikipedia article both to verify its contents and to demonstrate that he is notable enough for inclusion. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 22:10, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Good to go, thank you for your help! Saltyseashaman (talk) 22:13, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Some advice on getting underway as an editor

edit

My advice to new editors is that it is best to start by making small improvements to existing articles, rather than creating new articles. That way any mistakes you make will be small ones, and you won't have the discouraging experience of repeatedly seeing hours of work deleted. Gradually, you will get to learn how Wikipedia works, and after a while you will know enough about what is acceptable to be able to write whole new articles without fear that they will be deleted. Over the years I have found that editors who start by making small changes to existing articles and work up from there have a far better chance of having a successful time here than those who jump right into creating new articles from the start.
