Mexican Drug War

While the Mérida Initiative itself is part of the War on Drugs, the overall armed conflict is not- the "War on Drugs" is not an umbrella term for every drug-related conflict, it specifically refers to US efforts.

In a narrow sense, it's more accurate to say "the War on Drugs is part of the Mexican Drug War" than "the Mexican Drug War is part of the War on Drugs". Regards, Swarm ^X 19:36, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Hey, I have a question. After I finish cleaning up the Gulf Cartel article in the next month or so, I was thinking of putting my time on Los Zetas article. Do you think it is appropiate to copy certains sections from the Gulf Cartel page, like the rupture from Los Zetas, for example? The info is basically applicable for both. What do you think? Thanks! Cosmic radiation as destruction mechanism for Martian methane

Hi. I noted you added a reference to cosmic radiation breaking down methane here. Cosmic radiation (massive particles) are a seperate phenomenon from ultraviolet radiation (massless photons), and as far as I can tell there is no mention of the former playing a role in breaking down methane in the sources given.--109.205.169.38 (talk) 09:45, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

Referencing Drug Lord Page in a Book

I am an editor writing on behalf of my client, who is writing a memoir-fiction novel and referencing different drug lords in this article. Since you did a lot of major edits on this piece, would you be willing to represent the Wikipedia authors who worked on this article in order to give authorization to the publisher? The following below is where she cites:

This political crime was the beginning of a series of assassinations that intensified the violent culture where the guerrillas, paramilitaries, politicians, drug dealers, and government employees were part of a complex web of interests, intimidation and violence as a way for the groups to each get what they wanted. Dionicio Loya Plancarte

Hi. I am writing to you as the creator of this article. Since you created the article in 2010 stating that Dionisio had been captured in 2009, I am wondering what you make of THESE edits, where it appears to indicate that Dionisio was released within about 1 year or so after his capture. Are these newer sources reliable? If they are not, did you have reliable sources yourself back when you created the article? BI, I might be out for some time. I just got back to my hometown and I'm working on a book about the history of the city. Also, I might be making some travels here and there, so I will probably not be able to supervise the articles I was previously working to expand. You've been doing a good job looking at them, so thank you!

But I bought the books Mexico: Narco-Violence and a Failed State? by George W. Grayson, Cartel: The Coming Invasion of Mexico's Drug Wars by Sylvia Longmire, and El Narco: Inside Mexico's Criminal Insurgency by Ioan Grillo just a couple of weeks ago, and I plan to read them all eventually and then work on the articles here on Wiki on my free time. I heard the books are really informative and interesting. I suggest you to read them if you can, too!

Anyways, just letting you know that I will be out for about a month (although I might appear every now and then to make some small edits). deleted entry in gulf cartel

I saw you deleted one of my entries in the Gulf Cartel section, where i mentioned that the cartel was founded in the 20s. My understanding is that the narcotrafic started in the 1920s, but not by the Gulf Cartel as it did not exist yet. It was founded in the 1970s. BatteryIncluded (talk) 03:04, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

my understanding is that the organization has been active since the 1920s and it should therefore me added as being "active" since then. In essence, the name means nothing. What matters is whether they were active or not in the 20s, and they were. Disbanded?

I am writing to you because you seem to have a pretty fair understanding of Mexico's drug cartels (history, reach, etc etc). Question: Which (if any) of the Mexican cartels floating around Wikipedia are considered disbanded? And I mean, do we have reliable citations for that?

Seems some of this may be a "judgement call" (read: WP:OR). Some editors are crying disbanded while others are saying no. I don't care who is right and who is wrong, but the citations have to reflect what the article is claiming and I know you will agree with on this. I trust your knowlege in this area because I have noticed you have been consistently more correct in your cartels' edits that the other editors (ComputerJA also seems fairly good source but he is newer around here), and certainly your knowledge is greater than mine as cartels are not my greatest forte!

This disbanded/not disbanded has some rather minor (as well as obviously major!) repreccussions such as this one HERE where I don't know if it was disbanded or not, but I do know that if it was disbanded, then the spelling is wrong (controls -> controlled)! Off the top of my head, I think besides Juarez I have seen maybe the La Familia Michoacana and the Beltran Leyva cartel articles with claims back and forth they were disbanded.

Hello and thank you for your continued partnership in updating the related articles. I also have noticed your knowledgable and sober edits in this topic. My short answer is: I am not sure what is the federal government version on the status of the Juarez Cartel, but they have declared the Beltran-Leyva and La Familia Cartels "disbanded" (in spanish they actually used the word "extinct"). Lazcano

Hello BatteryIncluded. In RE to THIS edit from you, I initially felt the way you edit, and hesitated both ways for a while. However, finally inched a bit towards adding the "death" info for 3 reasons, (1) The statements were made in reliable sources, (2) it was proven (or at least especulated) to be wrong by another reliable source, (3) there may be people who after a Google, etc, search -- and without reading any deeper -- may conclude the man is dead and thus one of the 21 caught/killed by the authorities.

In one sentence, I felt it was important to state authorities believe Lazcano is still alive, for the same reason that other articles have things like -- forgive the crude analogy -- the earth has been proven not to be flat. Of course, you may feel otherwise so feel free to revert me now that I have explained my position. Or maybe what you meant is that the death issue can be re-written/presented differently. Either way, I would be happy to hear your thoughts.

Logan Heights

Hey Battery, I noticed your edit to the Mexican Drug War page about Logan Heights. I know they are primarily a California gang, but isn't it fairly established now that they are regularly recruited by the Tijuana Cartel to do hits, both in Mexico and the US? I guess you could say they are part of the cartel at that point, but for instance David Barron Corona was a Logan Heights gang member who became enforcer for TJ cartel and recruited other Logan Height's members for the role, but he was still separately a LH and Mexican Mafia member in addition to working for TJ. Anyways, just was wondering what you think of this. Keep up the good work on all the Mexican drug war/drug cartel articles, you're one of the few people I've seen regularly editing the articles for a while now. jlcoving (talk) 02:36, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Hello. I too thank you for working on and expanding these articles and cleaning the persistant vandalism. You have been at it for a long time and you are quite knowledgable in the subject. After a few years of updating the related articles, I am sure you too noticed that keeping track of the (real) cartel alliances/rivals is difficult. And when the "Allies/Rivals" lines in the infobox get cluttered with the names of hired gangs, the critical key info on cartel alliances gets lost in a bunch of secondary information. In the past, I proposed instead to the interested editors to create a section in the article to write about the hired gangs.

Being that that you have given this some thought, I am be happy to dscuss some changes to this. Here are a few proposals:

1) If the hired gang is not even mentioned in the main body of the article, then it is obviously not noteworty to insert them in the "Allies/Rivals" infobox.

2) If you feel that including the name of hired gangs is necessary, how about entering the info like this?:

Allies: X, Y, Z Enforcers A, B, C

Planetary exploration timelines

Your inclusion of the Roscosmos logo instead of the Russian flag in the Timeline section of the Exploration of Mars article seems to me a good idea. Would you agree to replace flags with space agencies logos in the timeline sections of Exploration of the Moon and Observations and explorations of Venus articles?
