Ditto. I recall when I was at boarding school and my Grandma came with my family to visit, I had a Rush tape cued up in my tape deck. She switched it on to see what I was listening to, and I was expecting some sarcastic comment: she was an LRAM, qualified as a piano accompanist (which is about as hard and impressive as qualifications get). Apache disambiguation

Hi, nice work for disambiguation of Apache. Sure there are a lot of them. I was wondering can you disambiguate Apache in computing context to Apache HTTP Server instead of Apache Software Foundation. Redirecting talk pages?

So, uh, why is Talk:Rock climbing area a redirect to a talk page of a completely different article? That's kind of strange, plus makes it difficult to discuss the article of which it is a talk page... Stan 03:56, 27 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Before my edit, it was re-directed to "Talk:List_of_rock_climbing_areas", which itself was a redirect to Talk:List of climbing areas so I simply substituted the second redirect for Talk:Rock climbing area. I was unaware until now, there was a Talk:Climbing area. However, I see it is a currently a redirect to Talk:List of climbing areas. Looks like the issue started when someone originally redirected the talk page for one of "climbing area" pages to its associated "list" page. That is, Talk:Rock climbing area was re-directed to Talk:List_of_rock_climbing_areas. RedWolf 04:15, Feb 27, 2004 (UTC)

Mixed vegetables VFD

I don't even remember putting mixed vegetables on VFD, but I went through a brief period of posting recipes there, to be transwikied to Wikibooks and then deleted. I waded into a controversy I didn't know existed, got called an anti-Albanian bigot, and drifted away from the argument (though I continue to have an opinion.) The discussion has been moved to Talk:List of recipes/Delete.

Apocatastasis

Thanks for the comments directly to me about apocatastasis. This approach is a lot more helpful when concerns arise over an article than a VfD entry. Of course, this is impossible when only anonymous users without talk pages are the contributors. I am usually quite happy to look for compromises in articles where I have been a significant participant. In its earlier incarnation I agree that the concept was nothing more than a dictionary definition, but my feeling is that it is also a theological concept that has had some influence over the years. It would be nice to expand the stub.

I also think that there are better ways of dealing with a Wikipedia article that should really be in a sister project. Rather than outright deletion it would cause less aggravation if a message were left on the page such as The article which was previously here was more properly a dictionary definition. The image text indicated that you were the copyright owner and agreed to the GFDL but you added text indicating further restrictions on the copyright that did not meet the requirements of GFDL. Ampersand

Song Lists

We're going to have to give serious consideration in splitting up the song pages further. Both S and W are rapidly approaching the 100kb mark. The "list of people by name" is a good template to start on the way they have formatted things alphabetically and split it into subpages. I'm going to have a look at various ways we can do this. Is it just me? Wikipedia has been very slow for the past several days. Sometimes, I get decent response time, other times, it's pitiful. I've substantially reduced my editing time because it's not worth the painful wait. I don't see anything in the announcements or goings-on. Look at the traffic graph and the response time graph. As you can see, it's been slower than normal for the last few days. There's a number of things going on which could influence this. Coronelli went down, replaced by a borrowed machine from Bomis called curly. This caused slow response for about half a day while curly built up a cache. More recently, moreri has been taken out of the webserver rotation in order to dedicate it to compressing the old revisions of the larger wikis. Thus, we've been running on 4 webservers instead of 5. Compressing the old table is essentially a means of buying time while we wait for a bigger hard drive. -- Tim Starling 05:19, Apr 14, 2004 (UTC)

Hi. Interesting story of your climb. Sounds to me like that might have been the first time, not the 10th time for your "guide". We are considering the Machame or Rongai routes, the Marangu (Coca-cola route) was discarded a while back by us. I've done a lot of scrambling in my days and a bit of glacier travel. I'd give more consideration to some of the more demanding routes but the other person is not quite up to that. You sure didn't leave much time for acclimatization. I spent two nights in a tent at nearly 5100m in Nepal and while not easy I was comfortable after being above 4,000m for 9 days. RedWolf 04:10, Apr 24, 2004 (UTC)

Ya. The guide was a bit of a chancer allright. There is a problem with kili guides in that most of the best known guide companies are based in kenya but Tanzanian law forbids kenyans from guiding on Kili. The kenyan companies will find you a tanzanian guide, but you really have to trust them to trust him. Tanzanians can guide on mount kenya, however. The Machame and Rongai routes aren't (If I'm remembering right - its been a number of years) much more than tough hikes, and I didn't have experience of anything more technical at the time. Also, 5100m in Nepal is far more difficult than the same height at the equator. Its to do with the Coriolis effect - the atmosphere is thicker at the equator and so the percentage of oxygen at a particular height is more. Good luck with your trip - and dont eat the salad! Album Info

Many Thanx for your comments regarding the chronology. You have probably noticed that User:ScudLee and myself are in the process of trying to clean up the album pages, but this will probably take the next month to reduce the following lists Needs infobox and Incomplete infobox to a managable size. As I progress through these I will obviously revert any offending styles that I manage to notice, but obviously we are working on many articles that already have started/written. apologies for incorrect formatting. I'm still unsure about the inclusion of the recorded box on the template as unless you actually own the album, the requested details suggested on Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums are hard to find and if you do have them can lead to a very large box being required. I personally would suggest moving these to a ==Recording Details== heading in the article itself. This is the main omission from the boxes still requiring info. and will keep the list relatively long for some time.Scraggy4 18:53, 9 May 2004 (UTC)

Mountain categories

I probably should have raised this when I saw you make Category:North American mountains, sorry. Doesn't it make more sense to put Category:Mountains of the United States, Category:Mountains of Canada, and Category:Mountains of Mexico as sub-categories of Category:North American mountains, rather than putting articles in both the country and the continent? This seems to be the general consensus about categories so far, as I understand it: don't put articles in multiple categories which are closely related and join up quickly in the tree. People are talking about automatically listing all articles that live beneath a point in the category tree. Now, they may be smoking dope, but the principle makes sense to me.

If you believe this, then perhaps Category:North American mountains is not that useful, because it would only have 3 sub-categories, so perhaps it should be dropped in favor of just the country categories?

I apologize again if this means wasted work --- I'm happy to do the grunt work to whatever we decide is correct.

Offline report update

Hi. Yes, I built a Link Analysis Database under Mac OS X. The database load took just over one hour and running the analysis script took about 2 hours I believe. Your comment say the analysis script takes 10 hours to run which makes me wonder a bit if I did everything correctly (I'm attributing it to faster system speed at the moment). The result count for the above report seemed to be comparable to what was there before. I just looked at the script run and noticed a few issues: extract_links.sql did not run. I guess I should re-run the analyze - what do you do to clear out the previous analyze run? Manually drop all the tables?

I didn't really run into any significant issues. I did write a quick C program to generate the extract scripts although I don't quite understand the deal with adjusting the "pos". One question I have is what do you do when you want to load a fresh database dump? Create a new database or just truncate/drop the existing tables? RedWolf 17:07, Aug 6, 2004 (UTC)

Glad to hear it worked - the script should take 1-2 hours to run on a modern PC, the 10 hours thing looked to me to be a bug in the MySQL optimiser, it was just plain refusing to use a perfectly good index. The 'pos' column is there to handle the lack of iterators (for, while, repeat etc) in MySQL 4.1 - a nasty hack that should vanish along with the need for the repetative 'extract_xxx.sql' scripts when version 5 arrives. To rebuild, I create a new database and start afresh each time. Any problems please do shout. - TB 18:54, Aug 6, 2004 (UTC)

I, too, have disambiguated English on my userpage. I understand that it may be useful to know people's specific backgrounds so you or others can suggest certain topics they should look at. However, they are user pages and not actually critical pieces to the encyclopedia. dab German

I happened to stumble over a changed linking you did on the article on Preventive war. It's probably no big deal, but you there changed German in the context of World War I to [[Germany|German]], that in my perception is equal to [[Federal Republic of Germany|German]]... Not quite perfect. ;->

I am not sure if I personally would have preferred a link to Imperial Germany, or if I think it's a superior solution to link to the brief list that clearly shows that the meaning of "Germany", and Germany itself, has morphed quite frequently after the Peace of Westphalia.

Due to the many morphisms of Germany, it's sometimes difficult to properly disambiguate. I usually just use Germany when it relates to the country in general although sometimes I will choose a more specific period. I have no problem with your change. I don't think I've seen a discussion as to whether one should be choosy about which version of Germany to disambiguate to although I haven't looked that hard for such a discussion. I think it better to use particular period of Germany article when the context is taken into consideration. Feel free to update others as you fit, I don't expect to have a problems with that being done. RedWolf 05:54, Sep 10, 2004 (UTC)

Good. I'm not particularly knowing about Germany, so I don't think you'll see me doing much of such. Basically, I restrict myself to issues of Finnish matters, and matters Sweden and Finland have in common due to the 500+ years of shared history, and to lesser degree to issues of diplomacy and some general aspects of political science. No Prayer for the Dying

The page was created by a hard banned user, User:Mr. Treason, and his contributions are reverted/deleted on sight at the moment. Since there's some suspicion that Mr. Treason might be Michael (Both edit from AOL frequently on music articles), there was the further danger of serious accuracy problems. Image permissions

It appears that several images you uploaded originally were placed under a noncommercial-use license and that you subsequently changed this to GFDL. However, some have not been updated in this fashion. Would you mind clarifying the license on those images, and if they are licensed under GFDL, could you indicate that by replacing the existing tags with the {{GFDL}} template?

Wenatchee mountains

Hi, RedWolf.. I'm back from Wikiholiday, but only at minimal level. I just happened to stumble across your fresh Wenatchee Mountains article start. The Stuart Range is great, one of my favorite ranges. But, to my mind, the Stuart Range is not part of the Wenatchee mountains, they are separated by Ingalls Creek. The 250K:1 topo map is ambiguous [1], peakbagger.com agrees with your definition [2]. I was wondering: do you have definitive source for what is in/out of the Wenatchee mountains?

I know I have a digital photo of Mount Stuart somewhere on a CD-ROM, I'll see if I can dig it up.

Welcome back. I haven't gone on any declared wiki break myself but I've tried to cut down my time here as well. As to the question at hand, I have no definitive source declaring the Stuart Range part of Wenatchee Mountains. A google search produces pages that sometimes declares Mt. Stuart in the Wenatchee Mtns and other times in the Stuart Range. I originally was going to make the Stuart Range a separate article but when I saw peakbagger put the range also into Wenatchee, I decided to just leave it there for now. Feel free to break the Stuart Range out into a separate article. I'm not familiar with that area at all other than having heard/read about the Wenatchee Mountains in the past. It can be hard to write articles on mountain geography when even topo maps are ambiguous or two maps of the same area don't agree. RedWolf 20:27, Oct 11, 2004 (UTC)

Hi. Not a problem. Even more seasoned users such as myself sometimes get tripped up by concentrating on a particular subject when writing an article and forgetting about other meanings of terms. In articles, these types of things are regularly corrected by semi-automated processes. Cleaver Disappointment?

I just argued on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Cleaver for

• Keep, for the sense, re glacier-bearing mountains in at least western N. Amer, of a rock formation flanked by two glaciers. (Even if the term is geographically restricted, it would be either a redir to the dominant term, or the target of the redirects from all the other regional terms.) These are important features in mountaineers' planning of ascent and traverse routes, and IMO an article could discuss what they have in common, probably different categories of them, and examples that affect notable routes.

But i count 4 Del to my 1 Keep, and 14 hours left.

His article describes him as a writer of BRITISH sitcoms, therefore - British. Remember - all the English are British, not all British are English (especially not those from Northern Ireland). Trying to make a US Mountain Infobox template

The last time I played with templates several months back, the only way I could get them to work properly is to either use a lot of "helper" templates to complete it, or change from wiki table syntax to HTML table syntax. Neither is ideal. Of the two evils, the latter is better IMHO. The template designers made a very poor decision in their choice of parameter delimiters (i.e. vertical bar) RedWolf 04:31, Dec 1, 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. Yes, I have had the page bookmarked for a while. I usually check images on pages I haven't seen before and tag them that way. Occasionally I look at the list and check a few but it's too tedious to stay with it for any stretch of time. RedWolf 05:05, Dec 16, 2004 (UTC)

Hi Redwolf - thanks for the note; both are images which were incorrectly titled so I'd re-uploaded with the correct name. Image:Comm broom.jpg is an USDA photo, so I've tagged it as such; Image:Commonbroom.jpg never had a tag, you'll have to check with User:Dmsar who uploaded it under the incorrect name Image:Scotchbroom.jpg (this one can of course be deleted as a duplicate) - MPF 00:09, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Van Halen:Heavy Metal

Oh. So I have to cite a source every time I upload a copyrighted image and claim fair use on it, eh? Sorry, I did not know that. Unfortunately, that is the only way I know how to get a decent representative image of the City of Vancouver, because I can't just go there any time to take my own photos of the city. If you read the copyright information on Wikipedia, you will find that if you declare fair use of an image, you still need to provide a source and give a reason for fair use. Some exceptions are album and book covers which have their own specific image copyright tags. Since it appears to be a copyrighted photograph that you do not own, it would be best for you to state sources. I would like to add photographs to a lot of mountain articles but I can't simply take a copy of a photograph on another website and simply put it on Wikipedia under fair use. If you are not willing to provide a source for Image:Vancouver_waterfront.jpg, I may have to list it on Wikipedia:Copyright problems because I don't believe this photograph falls under fair use.
