Edits to Template:Please leave this line alone

Well, something needs to be done to the page, because it renders over the text in IE for me now (which was why I was trying to fix it in the first place). So you can see what is happening, I have placed images of what I see here (warning: big images). I am using IE 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.050301-1526. CoyneT ^talk 28 June 2005 19:26 (UTC)

Additional note: Maybe it just has to do with width/maxwidth. I am told by something I read that maxwidth:60% doesn't work; what I had tried was reversing them, so that width was a percentage and that maxwidth was set in pixels. Just FYI; maybe it will help. CoyneT ^talk 28 June 2005 19:29 (UTC)

More: The problem I am seeing seems to be "skins" related. If I'm on "Classic" skin (to which I somehow wound up configured), the bottom block is rendered over the text, otherwise not. It looks okay if I'm configured for Monobook. CoyneT ^talk 29 June 2005 21:27 (UTC)

John W. Garrett Infobox

If you insist on keeping the infobox, then please do something about the grotesque image distortion that the box causes...and also the problem of the horizontal rule that bisects it. What's the point of the infobox, anyway? It's not like a species taxobox that displays information that would be cumbersome to put into the text. The infobox information goes easily into a biography. "Merge" template voting

I've set up two separate votes on the "merge" templates' discussion page. One pertains to the templates' wording, and the other pertains to the templates' visual design. Users may vote on neither, either or both of these issues.

According to that policy, violet/riga should not have protected the page:

"Admins should not protect pages which they have been involved with (involvement includes making substantive edits to the page or expressing opinions about the article on the talk page)."

And if the page should have been protected, it first should have been restored to the version for which twice as much support had been expressed.

I also don't know why violet/riga didn't protect the {{mergefrom}} and {{mergeto}} templates, which are involved in the same edit dispute. (I mentioned this fact on violet/riga's talk page.) —Lifeisunfair 4 July 2005 00:34 (UTC)

As for reverting the page to the "consensus" version and then protecting it, that would be even more out of line. • I have intentionally stayed away from that debate and the voting in it, thus I wouldn't consider myself an involved party in the dispute. The issue is a somewhat larger one - Netoholic has a tendency of ignoring consensus and unilaterally imposing his own view on templates. This was discussed in a lengthy talk I had with him and Kim Bruning about a week ago (at the end of which, Kim blocked him for revert warring). Unfortunately, Kim has since resigned from Neto's mentorship; but Netoholic has lately been doing precisely those things that got him into the RFAr injunction in the first place. Hi - sorry if my reversion seemed a bit peremptory, but there wasn't really space in the edit summary to explain. Your edit was to stop a link to wikispace in a template - normally a good move. However, in the case of this particular template it is - as noted at the top of its talk page - maintained by WP:WSS in an attempt to bring some sort of order to Wikipedia. Since the aim of that project is to reduce the use of the simple generic stub template, it makes more sense to have the very short explanation as to better templates that can be used than not to. Much of the talk in the template's talk pages is also related to the wording, and there seems to be a fair degree of consensus as to having some sort of message saying "place a more precise stub message" - the link is the most obvious way. In fact, your last message on the talk pages, about a month ago, was answered by someone suggesting that the link would probably attract more editors - not a bad thing. Begging your pardon, are you being serious about the last bit? Do you intend to continue listing this article on VFD every six months? That sounds an awful lot like intentional disruption to me. I've only listed that article on VfD once, and I would not have done so if I'd known its recent history at the time. However I don't think it's unreasonable to list borderline articles like this, as long as it's at reasonable intervals. It's been over six months so I was fine with the nomination and, on procedural grounds, felt that what was evidently a good faith nomination should be honored.

On disruption, well I don't think different individuals not in a conspiracy VfDing an article infrequently would amount to disruption, although the trolls may attempt to disrupt the discussion. If you get problems on #wikipedia just put it into moderated mode. 1. Type the title in the Search box (say, "Testpage") and click Go.
2. If it does not exist, you'll end up on a Search page; near its beginning you can read « You searched for "Testpage" [Index]». Click on the Testpage link.
3. You will now be at a page offering some options, the first one being « Start the TestPage article ». Click that.
4. Type in your article, not forgetting to put in the links, proper orthograph, categorisation and interwiki links (to other languages). Click « Show preview » until satisfied, then click « Save page ».

McLaren link

Hi, the only reason I added "nowiki" to the "McLaren" link on Talk:Team McLaren was because I'm working on Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links. As such I've reduced the links to "McLaren" to the point were only these remain:

• Talk:Team McLaren
• Mclaren (redirect page)

Renault Sport

I noticed that you created the redirect Renault Sport → Renault F1. As Renault Sport (offically Renault Sport Technologies) is separate from Renault F1 I've created an independent article on that page to reflect that.

From research I think its true to say that Renault's participation in F1 was as Renault Sport from 1975 (creation of Renault Sport) to 1997? Do you know if that's right? Then with the purchase of Benetton Renault F1 was run as a distinct division (that I'm pretty sure of). As such I think it would be correct to change those links that refer to the 2000-Present team to Renault F1 and leave those that refer to the period up to 1997 as Renault Sport. Any thoughts? You may have noticed *mega sigh* that yet another user has dragged up the lets rename Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom farce, only 9 days after the last vote ended. (What next? A vote every day on the issue next?) I have proposed instead this vote on Talk:Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom page:

While double hyphen and equality sign look similar, they have a very different semantics. The first is a variant of the single hyphen, and is a punctuation mark, the second is a mathematical symbol, and indicates equality. So, it's not correct to replace one with the other. Similarly, it would be incorrect to replace a with Cyrillic а (azъ), or o with Greek ο (omicron), even if they look the same. -- Naive cynic 00:26, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

Merge of Sexual characteristics

Hi. You have commented on the talk page for Sexual characteristics that you feel the article should be merged with sex. I respectfully ask that you re-consider. Ignoring how often the term is used in connection to primary and secondary characteristics, it is widely used on its own [2]. Also, keep in mind that User:AlexR has been using the sex-related articles to push a POV that involves the concept of heteronormativity, and the merge with sex that he suggested appears to be a bid to justify any mention of sexual characteristics pointing a user to that article. His primary concerns to date with my edits to Sexaual characteristics (which I expanded from a stub he created) have been the non-human-centric view and the removal of the heteronormativity link. Sadly, I'm a proponent of the theory of heteronormativity, but I'm trying to be NPOV here.

Would you please, re-read what I wrote (the edit that was reverted, and which lives at User:Harmil/Sexual characteristics), and see if you think that that version deserves to be summarily redirected to a footnote in a general article about which hundreds, if not thousands of books have been written. At this link, you say:

AFAIK, a nickname ought to be placed in parantheticals, i.e. Jimbo is placed after Jimmy Donal Wales this way Jimmy Donal Wales (also known as Jimbo). It makes it easy-to-understand.

Well, there's certainly no standard, since many articles place nicknames in quotation marks and some place them in commas (i.e. "Joseph Q. MacDuff, commonly known as Jo-Jo, ..."). In general, paranthetical statements are to be avoided in writing, and two in a row is particularly bad form, so I see no particular reason not to place the nickname in quotation marks. — Dan | Talk 14:33, 28 August 2005 (UTC)

If you did, is there a reason for not wanting it to be like that? I've noticed you've removed a couple today, but I'm not familiar with whether they're regarded as a bad thing. Thanks for your reply, Dan. I suppose I wonder why it matters that the standard appearance is changed. Here's where I like to use TOC right (though not always; it depends on the length of the intro and second section): sometimes it's impossible to find a useable image for the right-hand top of the page where the subject is looking at the camera or toward the text. It's a fairly standard rule in publishing that faces should look toward the text or straight ahead, but never away from the text, because it's known that readers' eyes are drawn in the direction faces are pointing. If you can only find a pic with the face looking to the right (as you look at it, or to the left from the subject's point of view), then that image has to go on the left or it looks odd. With the image on the left, the top left side of the page becomes too heavy looking with the TOC on the left too. On those occasions, TOCright is very useful; as on Ludwig Wittgenstein, for example, which is an example of a photograph that looked really strange on the right side as it meant he was looking right off the page. I don't know whether these are exceptions you'd be prepared to give some consideration to. SlimVirgin ^(talk) 23:30, September 1, 2005 (UTC)
