Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions; however, it appears you may have written a Wikipedia article, or a draft for a Wikipedia article, about yourself, at User:Rich Brownstein/sandbox. Creating an autobiography is strongly discouraged – please see our guideline on writing autobiographies. If you create such an article, it may be deleted. If what you have done in life is genuinely notable and can be verified according to our policy for articles about living people, someone else will probably create an article about you sooner or later (see Wikipedians with articles). If you wish to add to or change an existing article about yourself, you are welcome to propose the changes by visiting the article's talk page. Please understand that this is an encyclopedia and not a personal web space or social networking site. If your article has already been deleted, please see: Why was the page I created deleted?, and if you feel the deletion was an error, please discuss this with the deleting administrator. Thank you. Thanks for the heads up. I have a book that is being published and many people are looking for this standard biographical information found on any author's or scholar's page. Second, see "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_Estrin" which is clearly written by or at the direction of the author, yet is harmlessly sitting on your site. Third, my article is impeccably annotated, from top to bottom. Finally, although I understand the sentiment that you are trying to express when you insist that "someone else will probably create an article about you sooner or later," that mantra is illogical, counterproductive, insulting and naive on so many levels. Please read https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_Estrin and then read mine and help me get this up so I can move on.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Rich Brownstein (talkcontribs) 21:12, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

I'd recommend reading WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. If you cannot see the promotional language within the draft that currently exists or understand the reasons for Wikipedia's policies regarding self-promotion exist, then I'm afraid you will likely have to wait until someone does decide to write an article on you. Additionally, I'm not entirely sure that holds much water as the original Allen Estrin article was actually deleted due to its promotional nature and at the time questionable notability and the editor who created it was blocked. The current article was actually created by someone with no indication of being a WP:PAID/WP:COI editor (and who has been an active editor for 8 years), submitted as a draft through Articles for Creation and none of the heavier contributors appear to have any conflict of interest. Best, GPL93 (talk) 22:03, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

The Estrin article was random. I guess I have a good eye. How about https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shraga_Simmons? Regardless, I don't understand what you are suggesting that I do. Are you telling me to delete it before someone else deletes it? Are you suggesting that I edit it? Can you please be specific?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Rich Brownstein (talkcontribs) 22:35, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

There is a process for requesting an article, which is my recommendation. I'm not quite sure if the sandbox article is to the point where it needs to be deleted, but another editor may think so. Best, GPL93 (talk) 22:44, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Can you please review it again? Thank you very much.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Rich Brownstein (talkcontribs) 23:22, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Again, can you please review the new page? Thank you very much.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Rich Brownstein (talkcontribs) 11:42, 6 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

I'm not part of the draft review process. However, the most recent additions are clear violations of policies regarding self-promotion and may qualify for speedy deletion under WP:G11. Again, I'd recommend either requesting an article at the link above or waiting until an article is written. Best, GPL93 (talk) 14:52, 6 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

reliable sources

edit

See WP:IMDb the content on IMDb is user-generated, and the site is considered unreliable for Wikipedia's purposes. This [1]] is a passing mention so useless for establishing any notablity. This [2] is a commercial link to purchase a book so also useless as an independent reliable source. Theroadislong (talk) 14:46, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Rich Brownstein moved to draftspace

edit

An article you recently created, Rich Brownstein, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Please sign your posts

edit

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment, or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button   located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Which character?

edit

"I was the associate producer on one of David Zucker’s projects, directed by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, just before they created South Park. In fact, there is a South Park character that I inspired and I am credited on South Park's pilot episode." This is what you said. Which character were you referring to, that you inspired? Dealmaces (talk) 13:10, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

The Kyle Broflovski article suggests the character is “loosely based on co-creator Matt Stone and Rich Brownstein” but the source is not reliable as it is an interview with Brownstein. Theroadislong (talk) 13:53, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
But here here [3] Brownstein says “What is all of this "Kyle Broflovski" crap? None of it is true.” Theroadislong (talk) 14:29, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

My South Park character name was vague in this article at one time, because documenting it was not worth the fight. Then a draft editor mistakenly and grievously overreached by stating in several places that the character I inspired was Kyle Broflovski, which I took out. I replaced the editor's error with the real character name and links. Then another editor removed it all.
For the record, the character I inspired is "Shlomo" from The Passion of the Jew and Jewbilee. That was my nickname when working with the Zucker Brothers and Trey Parker and Matt Stone. youtu.be/kz1tumZOaqw?t=932. Trey and Matt also credited me as their "computer consultant" in the South Park Pilot episode https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0121955/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm, which was also true. And they asked that I play a rabbi in Orgazmo, but I declined. (Coincidentally, Orgazmo co-star Dian Bachar worked for me at The Transcription Company for many years after.) I received the nickname "Shlomo" in the early 1990s when I was a player and the official scorekeeper in David Zucker's very real Baseketball league that was played at Zucker's Westwood home years before the film. There was another player named "Rich" (Markey), so David Zucker said that I needed a different name and suggested "Spike". Not wanting that name, I tricked David by saying, "At least it's better than Shlomo!" "No," he said, "Shlomo is perfect." Other notable league players were Oscar winner Peter Farrelly and Creative Artists Agency co-chairman Richard Lovett. A few years ago when David was in Jerusalem screening Airplane! at a huge theater, he was asked during a post-screening Q&A, "Is it true that your greatest producer was also the official scorekeeper in your BASEketball league?" He answered, "Yes, it's true. That was Rich Brownstein, but we called him 'Shlomo'." We subsequently had dinner and David has written a foreword for my book. Full circle, BASEketball also is referenced in The Passion of the Jew and noted on the BASEketball wikipedia page:

Parker and Stone also referenced BASEketball's negative reception in South Park's season eight episode, "The Passion of the Jew", where at one point, Stan Marsh tells Kenny McCormick as they attempt to get a refund for the tickets they bought to see Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ: "This is about being able to hold bad filmmakers responsible! This is just like when we got our money back for BASEketball!"

I also want to say that this process of watching editors pick over my life and remove parts of it as "unverifiable" is unfortunate. Do I own my personal photo? Did I work with Elizabeth Loftus? Who cares about your groundbreaking research in social psychology that is regularly cited in academic journals!? You can't prove that strangers who are the leading voices in Holocaust education wrote nice things about your book, even though their words have been publically available for a year on my publisher's and Amazon's websites? Those nice things must have been written by your friends, one idiot editor implied! I can go on to literally any wiki bio and find more unsubstantiated content than I ever had:
  • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mickey_Rourke (Rourke made his stage debut in a revival of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge. He lent his voice to the video games Driv3r (2004) as Charles Jericho and True Crime: New York City (2005) as Terrence "Terry" Higgins, which was his fifth and last work with actor Christopher Walken. He also appeared in a Japanese TV commercial for Suntory Reserve (early '90s) and a commercial for Daihatsu and Lark cigarettes.)
  • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Arquette "Arquette was against the idea of becoming the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, believing that fans like himself would detest a non-wrestler winning the title. Vince Russo, who was the head booker for WCW at the time, insisted that Arquette becoming the champion would be good for the company and for publicity, and Arquette reluctantly agreed to the angle."
  • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_Steiger "He was spotted by Fred Coe, NBC's manager of program development, who increasingly gave him bigger parts. Steiger considered television to be what repertory theatre had been for an earlier generation, and saw it as a place where he could test his talent with a plethora of different roles. "
  • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elie_Wiesel "Wiesel had three siblings—older sisters Beatrice and Hilda, and younger sister Tzipora. Beatrice and Hilda survived the war, and were reunited with Wiesel at a French orphanage. They eventually emigrated to North America, with Beatrice moving to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Tzipora, Shlomo, and Sarah did not survive the Holocaust."
  • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baruch_Chait "He is the son of Rabbi Moshe Chait, the Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivath Chafetz Chaim of Jerusalem, and a student of Rabbi Henoch Leibowitz, former Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim of Kew Gardens Hills, New York."
I'm not suggesting for even a second that any of the assertions in the above articles are untrue. I am suggesting that you are holding my article to a different standard than articles that have already been published. I also have been contacted privately by editors asking for money: "pay me when the page is approved and published". Again, I am not suggesting that you are corrupt. I am not suggesting that you are all capricious and enjoying your power. And I am certainly not suggesting that you should put up the pages of every person who wants one. I am suggesting that -- for whatever reason -- the page would not have garnered this much friction had I not written it myself, the ultimate insult to your craft. Please forgive my ignorance and temerity. This has become such a timesuck that I genuinely regret having started. Nonetheless, I will check with my publisher to verify that I have permission to use the book cover on Wikipedia. And yes, I will continuously thank you all profusely, like Kevin Bacon in Animal House. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdFLPn30dvQ --Rich Brownstein (talk) 15:55, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I have removed the incorrect info about you on the Kyle Broflovski article, and please don't suggest that any of us are contacting you requesting payment, it is simply not true. Theroadislong (talk) 16:05, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
First, thank you. Second, I removed Broflovski; you may have removed it a different time, but I removed it at least once. Third, I am not suggesting anything; I an stating outright that someone sent me this unsolicited bribe or shakedown:
  • INITIAL LETTER: "Hi, I checked your Wikipedia declined draft; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Rich_Brownstein I am an experienced Wikipedian. I will do online research and rewrite the content in an encyclopedic tone, format the draft according to Wikipedia guidelines and get it approved, I will forward the final draft for you to review before submitting it. Kindly reply for more details. Best regards, ------"
  • MY RESPONSE: "Dear --------, I have just cleaned out the crap that the last person erroneously put in. Please take a look at it now. Thanks, Rich"
  • OFFER: "Hi, I will rewrite this declined draft according to Wikipedia guidelines and submit it for review. It will cost you USD 380, pay me when the page is approved and published. Regards, ------"
So you tell me: bribe or shakedown. Should I pay this person so the Wikipolice can track him down? If I expose him -- or even now just because of this semi-outing -- he might mess with my page forever, especially with an alias or with other unscrupulous editors. Perhaps a "Wikipedian" is not an editor, but he is clearly in the system, regardless of title. Theroadislong, you have been very helpful, but you have challenged my veracity twice in this post. Is there something inherently pure about Wikipedia editors? https://thenextweb.com/insider/2012/10/13/wikipedias-dark-side/ Finally, instead of addressing the substantive issues noted above, you challenge my word. You are a good person, I have not doubt, but is a complete timesuck.Rich Brownstein (talk) 17:11, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I removed content about you on the Kyle Broflovski article, not your draft. I would strongly suggest you don't get involved with paid editors real or scam, it would only end in tears. With good reliable sources there is every chance of having an acceptable article about you if you pass the criteria at WP:GNG, it just shouldn't be written by you. Wikipedia is a time sink for me also, I spend at least 8 hours every day week in, week out editing. Theroadislong (talk) 17:29, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. (Obviously I would not pay that person.) But thank you for all of your help. How about this plan: other than checking with my publisher about the cover page, I will ignore all of this unless you instruct me in this thread to do something? Also, what proof can I provide that I have permission to use my cover page? How is that established and confirmed? Thanks again. Rich Brownstein (talk) 17:38, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure, but I think book covers can only be used in articles about the book, not the author. I'll see if I can find a link somewhere. Theroadislong (talk) 17:45, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Someone removed it and noted "remove possible copyright violation."Rich Brownstein (talk) 18:17, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
That is a separate issue, you presumably don't hold the copyright for the book cover artwork.  Fair use applies, the image could be used to serve as the primary means of visual identification at the top of an article dedicated to the book in question, but not elsewhere. Theroadislong (talk) 18:34, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Again, what proof must I provide from the publisher that I have permission to use my cover page? How is that established and confirmed? Thanks again.Rich Brownstein (talk) 19:12, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
On a separate note, the reason people are asking about the people you have worked with are that there have to be other pages that would link to Rich Brownstein, even if independently notable as a page topic. Dealmaces (talk) 21:18, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
What does that mean: "that would like to Rich Brownstein"? Rich Brownstein (talk) 21:27, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Pages of relevance. Dealmaces (talk) 23:14, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

First, how do I prove that I own my picture?
You don't own the copyright of the photograph? The copyright rests with the creator or the publisher, the cover art can normally only be used in the article about the book, unless the cover art can be freely licensed, see WP:CONSENT, c:COM:OTRS and {{di-no permission-notice}}. Theroadislong (talk) 15:34, 10 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Also, much of the information that has been discussed, especially about South Park, was discussed in https://medium.com/authority-magazine/social-impact-authors-how-why-rich-brownstein-is-helping-to-change-our-world-4a103ce1ecb0.
Please let me know if any of the following relatives or passages are relevant notables:
  • Rich Brownstein's great-grandfather was Ben Baer, one of the leaders of the Deadwood, South Dakota business and Jewish community and the business partner of Sol Star, who was portrayed regularly by John Hawkes (actor) on the television series Deadwood (TV series)[1].
  • Rich Brownstein's father, Richard J. Brownstein, was the International President of BBYO's Aleph Zadik Aleph, as was Rich's brother, International President Jerome "Jeb" Brownstein, [2]and his sister B'nai B'rith Girls, International President Jois Brownstein[3].
  • Rich Brownstein's cousins include award-winning writer David Guterson, multiple Grammy-winner Larry Klein, and the former Commander of the Naval Forces U.S. Atlantic Fleet, Vice Admiral Douglas J. Katz[4] and his son Rear Admiral Robert D. Katz, Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group Two[5].
  • Rich Brownstein has been recognized as having the largest collection in the world of Portland Trail Blazers' memorabilia [6][7][8].
  • Rich Brownstein was famously attacked in a French subway by an antisemite[9].
I am also re-suggesting that my history in psychology is not irrelevant and is quite notable, especially because most research that has had longevity was not produced by an undergraduate. My research has been, on average, cited in significant journals at least once a year [10][11][12][13][14][15][16]:
My research was also presented at the 1985 Annual Western Psychological Association conference. And I was briefly a Ph.D. candidate of famed American psychologist Elizabeth Loftus at the University of Washington. She is very notable! "In 2002, Loftus was ranked 58th in the Review of General Psychology's list of the 100 most influential psychological researchers of the 20th century, and was the highest ranked woman on the list."[20] Do you need a note from Loftus confirming that I was in her program?
And I wonder if any of my published articles are relevant:
  • "The greatest Holocaust movie ever made, starring Steve Buscemi, debuted on 9/11. It’s time to revisit it"[21] September 10, 2021: JTA/Jerusalem Post/The Forward/Times of Israel/South Florida Sun-Sentinel/Washington Jewish Week/Omaha Jewish Press/Intermountain Jewish News/CT Jewish Ledger
  • "Are Holocaust films Oscar bait?"[22] February 8, 2020: Jerusalem Post

Consider submitting your draft

edit

Consider submitting your draft. If accepted, Mazel tov! If declined, the reviewer will state one or more reasons. Separate from that, pointing out weaknesses in other articles is not a justification. The 6.2 million articles in Wikipedia all contain weaknesses, and in fact, many deserve to be deleted. Some were approved before current standard set. Others exist because the creators skipped the reviewer process and just created articles in mainspace. Content in your draft has been deleted (some by me), because even though it was true and verified by references, it had nothing to do with your notability. Encyclopedia articles are not CVs. David notMD (talk) 00:50, 12 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

In answer to "Please let me know if any of the following relatives or passages are relevant notables:" No. Connections to notable people are meaningless because notability is not contagious. Same for your undergrad co-authored journal articles - true, but not relevant to your proposed notability as author of a book. David notMD (talk) 00:53, 12 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
