A7 problem

Hi Peridon! I created an article, which you deleted. I wanted to ask for further information because the reason for it was (A7: Article about an eligible subject, which does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject). What should I change about it? Thanks & best regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by S.J. Elisabeth (talkcontribs) 13:09, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

First things first. When putting a new thread on a talk page, please do it at the bottom. Easier to find. And please sign on talk pages with four ~ things. Puts your name and a datestamp on. OK. Your article didn't show how Cranlr had any notability. It's a start-up. Not good - obviously hasn't been around long. Half its stuff isn't out yet. And in 15 pages of Google search looking for "cramlr", I have found nothing that fits our policy on reliable independent sources. That's WP:RS. We need independent reliable sources to prove notability - WP:CORP for companies. There's plenty of Facebook and blogs (not reliable), and directory entries (not independent), and press release stuff and adverts (neither are regarded as independent, and very often not reliable either...). Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia. On Facebook, anyone can have a page (so far as I know - I don't use it). Directories will take most things. We don't. There has to be notability. Being part of a bigger group might mean that you could get a few lines in the page about the group (sometimes the group isn't notable - this one does have a page). There would be a redirect from Cramlr to the section in the main group. You would be able to get a separate page later, if notability can be shown (that is, when it gets plenty of reliable coverage). If you can find coverage, let me know. (Start at Google page 16...) Otherwise, put a little section in the parent company's article with a reference to the company site or something like that. That should do there. Have a talk with User:Tokyogirl79 or User:MelanieN who are both good rescuers and content workers. Or ask the people at the Teahouse WP:TEAHOUSE. That's an advice centre for new editors. They're all good at explaining how to do things. Good luck. Peridon (talk) 14:23, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

Help with a rather murky set of articles?

Hiya! I'm going to do some digging for that one article you posted on my talk page, but I think I'm going to need some help with a PROD I declined earlier today. The entire scenario is a bit murky, to say the least. The article in question that started it all off is John Ziegler (guitarist). I was initially going to delete it via the expired PROD, but then I noticed that he was a member of two bands that have articles. (Pigmy Love Circus, VOLTO!) I know that having articles is not a guarantee of notability, so I looked into those and it looks like there is a slight claim to notability with them. PLC has at least one notable member (a member of Tool) and one that's of dubious notability, but it looks like there is a chance of coverage. VOLTO! also has the same Tool member, as well as someone whose best claim to fame seems to be that he's played on a few albums as a backup musician for notable artists. (Lance Morrison) I'm going to try to look for sources, but the notability here is sort of murky and questionable. Ziegler has received little to no coverage about him and while I'd otherwise say that it should be a redirect to one of the bands, he's been in two bands with a slight claim to notability. That in turn would potentially give him a bit of notability himself, perhaps, which makes the delete for the bands difficult as well. I'm not really sure what to do and my first impulse is to take them all to AfD and let everyone else sort them out, but I'd hate to do that without at least doing a little more work on them first. I guess the biggie is that if I can establish notability for the bands, Ziegler's article would be safe. Wanna give me a hand sorting out this mess? It's got a bit of a walled garden feel to it for all of the band members other than Carey. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 03:50, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

  • I've dug up some sources for Pigmy Love Circus and while most of it is "hey, this guy from Tool is in the band", there's enough to where it would probably pass for the most part. They do have a few reviews here and there. I'll probably redirect their albums to the main article though. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 09:56, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
  • Hmm... Volto! has some serious notability issues. Other than its association with Danny Carey, they've received no coverage and I'm not sure that they've actually released anything. However it might be notable if it has at least one other person in the group other than him that is notable. Ziegler has some serious notability issues, so if Morrison lacks notability then his page and Volto's would go. If I can't find notability for Morrison then I'll probably nominate Volto, Morrison, and Ziegler's pages for AfD in one lump. It'd be easier to explain, in any case. Sorry for chatting up your page, but I wanted to sort of keep a track of what I'm doing in case anyone says anything about the pages. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 03:41, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
When I get a little while to concentrate, I'll dig. Feel free to chat - I found a page of discussions between three people here once. Seemed to be sorted by the time I got to it. Peridon (talk) 09:08, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

RE:I Don't Want to Live Without You (Gregg Tripp song)

Hello,
I've read your message about the song by Gregg Tripp. However, I'd like to say that the song does not qualify any of the WP:NSONG criteria. The article hasn't got any sort of published source that the guideline desires and the song is not ranked on any chart. It hasn't also received any awards or it wasn't covered by any other notable artist. I am sincerely not fond of deleting any article; nevertheless it is quite unlike for this article to grow beyond its three-sentence content.

Also, I believe that your rationale for removing the speedy deletion was invalid as the guideline suggests that the notability for the song is independent from the main article and cannot be inherited. My proposal is redirecting it to Kuffs or Gregg Tripp article. Thank you. Myxomatosis57 (talk) 15:01, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

The mysterious sockpuppeteer

Hello, Peridon! I was on vacation with very limited Internet access for about a week, hence my inactivity. I've noticed that the SPI regarding Polllilur (the third L seems a tad excessive, doesn't it?) was reopened a few days ago. Has there been much else occurring on that front? dci | TALK 02:03, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

Catching him a bit quicker, I think. MrX is on the lookout, and with you back now, that'll be even better. He was Pollilur in one incarnation, and I still think I remember him from much earlier. The early edit summaries ('Made a page about...') - I've seen that before. The lack of communication makes me think it's someone doing it deliberately, too. Only got two articles up the last time before caught, and one sleeper was unearthed. I didn't block on the two edits, but the SPI did. I'll just block on sight now. Peridon (talk) 09:19, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
He's back as NinjasEdo1703. See Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Polllilur. - MrX 02:54, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Secret Garden opera deletion

Hello, you recently deleted an article about an opera based on the Secret Garden because you didn't think the content was important. I realize the article was incomplete, but when the nation's second largest opera company commissions a new work, it is very important in the music world. If you would restore the article, I would happily add more information and do cleanup. I appreciate your efforts to keep Wikipedia thorough and relevant, however, why not help clean the article up rather than delete? There are many less important works that have their own pages. Please help by restoring the article so I don't have to begin from scratch. FYI, the piece will soon be recorded by Naxos and repeated by Houston Grand Opera (I will add references and citations). Again, in the opera world this is quite important. I know thatn opera isn't for everyone, but I would appreciate your consideration. Thank you muchUomo dell'Opera (talk) 02:17, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Actually, no, I didn't delete the article. It's alive and well at The Secret Garden (opera). What I deleted were left-over redirects caused by Ser Amantio di Nicolao moving it to the correct titling. (No need for a date as there's only the one opera of the title.) As to "opera isn't for everyone", I frequently listen to opera on BBC Radio 3, and have Mussorgsky's Khovanschina on disc... Personal taste doesn't come into administrative work. I should, perhaps, have checked that the author of the article had been informed of the move, but I assumed that Ser Amantio, a very experienced editor, would have done that. (I usually do, whenever I move things.) Peridon (talk) 10:47, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Many thanks, and sorry for confusion (and condescending tone of my message). Uomo dell'Opera (talk) 13:56, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Dumb question

Good morning! (Or I guess good evening in your case.) I have a dumb question. There's an article that I requested to be userfied to me when it failed AfD: User:MelanieN/Chocoholism‎. I have done a complete rewrite and I am ready to put it back into mainspace. The question is, how do I do that? Can I simply change the name to Chocoholism, or will that send it to Articles for Creation or something? That seems kind of unnecessary; I have autopatrolled rights and I think I know when an article is acceptable; in addition another experienced user has helped me with it. The reason I don't know how to do this is, I never move things directly from my own sandbox; I use it for notes and research and drafts, and when I have an article ready to go I copy-paste it into a new article from scratch. But this one has article history that should be preserved, so it should be moved intact. I figured you or one of your talk page stalkers would know if I can just move it - or if not, maybe you have tools that can move it for me. Thanks, that uses up my quota of dumb questions for this month! --MelanieN (talk) 18:44, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker). You can move it yourself, with the "Move" tab at the top of the page (maybe in a drop-down menu just left of the search box). Be careful with the "move" interface: you need to select "(Article)" in the left-hand box, and have only the article name in the right-hand box. Check the box marked "move associated talk page". That will leave behind a redirect from your sub-page: if you don't want that, you can tag it {{db-u1}}.
But since the article was rejected at AfD, you shouldn't just put it back: you ought first to check with the closing admin, Ron Ritzman, that he agrees you have overcome the problems with the previous article. In the unlikely event that he is not, you should go to WP:Deletion review and provide a link to your draft. JohnCD (talk) 21:00, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
Thank you, I'll do that! --MelanieN (talk) 02:02, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Cycen Fjodr Deletion

You recently deleted an article I wrote about Cycen Fjodr. I initiated procedures to request undeletion. In the meantime noone has answered that request. Is there anyway you could move the article to my user page so that I might improve it, in hopes of remaking the page. I have new sources verifying the notability of the organization.

Thanks Goodoleboy1920 (talk) 20:09, 20 April 2013 (UTC)Goodoleboy1920Goodoleboy1920 (talk) 20:09, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

You've actually had a same day answer - and it's been userfied. According to JohnCD (who dealt with it), you should contact me before moving it back. You need to read WP:GROUP and WP:RS. GROUP is about notability for groups, and RS is reliable independent sources. Your ref No 5 was no good because it didn't mention the group, and just because someone was in the group doesn't make it notable. Year books and so on are no good either. You must show that it is covered in sources independent of the group and the uni. Age also doesn't always make notable. Again, in last week's New Scientist, it was put as a criticism of Wikipedia that we insist on this referencing. We have to. If you saw some of the utter crap that gets posted, you might understand why we insist on it. Unfortunately, some things get left out as a result, if they can't make the required referencing. Peridon (talk) 20:58, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
BTW "There is no public knowledge of whether the organization still exists". Statements like that make the deletion area admins start to think they've got a hoax on their hands. If no-one-s sure it exists, how can you make a proper article on it? (OK, there are articles on Nessie and Ogopogo, but they're well documented...) Peridon (talk) 21:02, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
Sources have been fixed and section regarding current status has been removed. The reason why I put this in in the first place is that noone knows the status of the organization, the last time anyone knew was in 1980. Read both pages you suggested (still fairly new to this) and reexamined the article. As far as sources go I mainly used the SMU yearbook to verify members in the organization, the yearbook being published by the school, not the group, and groups in the yearbook are official university groups according to SMU policies. I used old newspaper articles published by the school newspaper, the newspaper is run by an independent student media company and is therefore a reliable source. These articles confirm existence of organization, purpose of organization, and also how it's notable (namely that it was responsible for SMU's honor code).

Apologies for any mistakes I might have made. Goodoleboy1920 (talk) 03:19, 21 April 2013 (UTC)goodoleboy1920

Suggestion/nomination?

Hi, Peridon! I wonder if I can "nominate" someone for autopatrolled rights? I am thinking about User:Dohn joe. He has created several dozen articles and they are uniformly excellent. (I know, because he always asks me to look them over; they usually need only the most minor tweaks.) His most recent articles are La Jolla Woman's Club and Edgar Gott. If you wouldn't mind, take a look at his record and see what you think. If you're hesitant, or if there are criteria I'm unaware of, then never mind! and sorry if I've stepped out of line here. But I remember what a pleasant surprise it was when somebody I had never interacted with handed me autopatrolled status out of a clear blue sky. --MelanieN (talk) 01:19, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

The Devil's Legacy

Hi Peridon, Sorry to trouble you.

I have just tried to submit an entry for 'The Devil's Legacy'. The first time it was rejected because of a 'copyright issue'. Now again, it's been rejected, but I'm not exactly sure why? I know that novels are widely featured on Wikipedia. Please can you give me some advice as to how I should approach it in order for it to be acceptable for Wikipedia.

Many Thanks, Tom Jackson — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tom Jackson007 (talkcontribs) 15:39, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

First, format stuff. When you open a new talk page thread, please put a heading inside two pairs of = signs, and before you save, type four ~ things at the end of talk page post. That puts the sig and datestamp on. OK. The article. More than one problem. The text used had already been published at Smashwords, which means it is copyright. It may be copyright to them, or to you. In either case, we can't allow it here. Wikipedia is licensed under CC-BY-SA for free reuse by anyone anywhere (subject only to acknowledgement - which causes problems when they don't do that, as I've only just seen over something that turned out to be copied from here in 2009...). The Smashwords text isn't licensed. Now the next point. Your book is self-published. We have nothing against self-publication, except that very little published that way gets to pass WP:GNG - general notability. Books published by regular publishers don't always get articles, but have an advantage in that they have been reviewed by editors, and have been proof read and have a big outfit plugging them. The self-published author has none of this. OK, you may get "85% net back to the author/publisher/agent" - but it's 85% of not very much at the end of the day. You don't get easy access to reviews in the big newspapers, and displays in bookstores all over the country - and books on all their shelves. I know one person who browses Amazon for self-published stuff - and, I'm sorry to say, he does it for a laugh at some of the junk there. (Not saying your book is - I haven't seen it and haven't got a Kindle. Can't use a Kindle in the bath... Most of the self-published things he finds are OK in that respect.) Anyway, if you can show that your book passes GNG (or WP:NBOOK and prove it with reliable independent sources WP:RS, then let me know. Good luck. I'm not trying to put you off writing. I was accused of this once by someone who thought I was trying to put a rival off - I spend quite a bit of time here explaining things to writers who either haven't made it through the doors of a regular publisher, or have been taken in by the self-publishing dream, and to young people who are making their first attempts at getting stories on paper. I do suggest keeping on trying to find the hidden door at a regular publisher. Peridon (talk) 16:10, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

The Devils Legacy

Hi Peridon,

Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to provide such a clear explanation. I greatly appreciate it. As a matter of fact I am in discussions with a small Greek Publisher who is interested in publishing my novel in print here in Greece (after he translates it). So if everything goes okay, I will try again after publication. Best Wishes, and thanks again. And keep up the good work! Tom Tom Jackson007 (talk) 16:31, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Good luck again. If that comes off, you should get a London publisher too. Watch out for exclusive rights in the Greek deal - you don't really want a Greek publisher handling UK or US. They won't have the clout over here. Peridon (talk) 16:47, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

A few points. Protocol, first. On talk pages, please do what it says at the top of this page and post at the bottom with a title for a new thread. Always sign talk page posts with four ~ things. The software then puts your sig and the datestamp on. Right. Your article. I'm afraid there's not much point that I can see in restoring it. It would be deleted again. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, not a directory or social media where anyone can post just what they want. It's also not a place for writing about yourself (except for a non-promotional bit on your user page - but DON'T put an article there...). You are involved with political things. Everyone to his own. I was involved with local politics once. No longer. Look at WP:POLITICIAN as you seem to be making the politics the main claim to fame. Being on a youth committee or even being a member of a youth parliament isn't enough to get an article. Being a candidate for a real position like MP isn't enough either. Being a member of a borough council - not that even. Mayor of some places, yes. Not all, by a long chalk. Being an MP, or on the Welsh Assembly or in the Scottish Parliament, yes. In India, it's MLA. Sorry, but it looks to be too soon for you. Some day, when you get elected to one of those things, your secretary will do it for you. You're quite entitled to take it to WP:REFUND. I've deleted it again, by the way. Three admins have deleted it. That should mean something. Peridon (talk) 17:37, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Capitalization

The multinational Communism Ltd is capitalized. (Would you have no objections to an RfA candidate featuring a userbox saying "I am a Nazi"?)

With a small-c, "communist" is ambiguous.

Most intelligent honest persons calling themselves "communists" would disambiguate themselves "Marxists"---with the exception of Karl Marx (je ne suis pas une Marxiste.).

Sincerely, Kiefer.Wolfowitz 21:20, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

I'm apolitical (dislike virtually the whole bunch of politicians - especially those that have degrees in politics and economics...), but my late mother was, unbeknownst to me, a member of the British Communist Party until they changed the name. I only found out when she started ranting about them. She usually voted Conservative. We don't have the same reaction in the UK to political opinion, religion and race that some places do. Nazi, I agree on. That's not an acceptable one. There's not an reasonable theory behind it, even. As to communism, 'it hasn't been tried and found wanting, it hasn't been tried'. (PS When I do vote, it's normally for the candidate who stands the best chance of beating the one I dislike the most.) Peridon (talk) 21:52, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
I respect most aspects of E. P. Thompson, and he has repeatedly discussed why he and other democratic small-c communists left the British Communist Party after the invasion of Hungary. I can forgive Thompson for not having left earlier, because his Communist brother was killed by fascists after he had parachuted into Yugoslavia to help the resistance. There was a spirit in Europe that was best honoured outside of Communist Parties. (Apparently Marxism Today was interesting, at least.) Kiefer.Wolfowitz 22:05, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
