Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Sir James Creed Meredith has been reverted.
Your edit here to Sir James Creed Meredith was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links which are discouraged per our external links guideline. The external link(s) you added or changed (http://irishantiquities.bravehost.com/limerick/ballygrennan/ballygrennan.html) is/are on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia.
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Sir James Creed Meredith

edit

I hope you find the couple of references I added in the Freemasonry section useful as examples of how references can and should be done. I used the   button, clicked 'web' and entered the url in the field with the green arrows and clicked that icon. Try that in your sandbox and see how it works if you are unfamiliar with it. I'll help if I can with any questions you have. The quotation was put in by adding

|quote=text of the quotation

immediately before the }} characters that close the citation. This is added after you add the citation using the add button. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 12:02, 18 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

A tip: the article is now in pretty good shape except for lacking citations; you've worked really hard on it. I've been editing here long enough to know that adding good quality citations to items in reliable sources is now more important than polishing the text. Indeed it was always important. Other editors have a habit of deleting content that is not supported by citations. That's reasonable and expected. Sources need absolutely not be online sources. Printed material is absolutely fine, but the citation must be sufficient to take the reader who wishes to find it directly to the page. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 17:56, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Macaulay

edit

Hi. I noticed your edits to James Macaulay. Unless you've got a good source for the bit about the clan and heraldry, I think that this paragraph has to be removed. Wikipedia articles aren't supposed to contain 'original research'. Statements are supposed to have good sources to back them up. So cite your sources. If you haven't got a source for something, then it really shouldn't be added into an article - that's how mistakes creep in.

Just because individuals or families bear similar heraldry doesn't have to mean that they have any familial connection to each other. For example, Lord Macaulay bore arms similar to the family of Ardincaple, while being a member of an entirely different family.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 10:35, 2 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia Manual of Style, honorifics

edit

According to the Wikipedia Manual of Style, section on honorifics (see MOS:HONORIFIC):

"In general, styles and honorifics should not be included in front of the name, but may be discussed in the article. In particular, this applies to: styles and honorifics derived from a title, position or activity, including The Most Noble, The Most Honourable, The Right Honourable, and The Honourable; ..."

Also, things like "K.C." that follow a name should be outside of the boldface for the name itself. -- P.T. Aufrette (talk) 16:02, 15 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Golden Square Mile

edit

You're doing excellent work on Golden Square Mile, I think. It's a pleasure to watch you at work. If you have any wiki-related questions, let me know, here. best, Shawn in Montreal (talk) 16:38, 20 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Shawn, thank you so much... I posted the following message below on your talk page, but I have not figured out how to 'talk' on wikipedia, so may have placed it incorrectly...

"Firstly, thank you so much for your positive words re the Golden Square Mile; very much appreciated (it's a prickly subject in need of a careful approach!) and extremely kind of you, thank you.

Secondly, I have not 'talked' on wikipedia before, so I'm slightly nervous I have put this in completely wrong the place! If I have, many apologies, and do let me know for next time, thank you!"

  • You have replied just fine, though when I post a comment on someone's talk page I keep a watch on it, so it's not necessary to reply in both places. Just one bit of advice for now: to sign your comments, you need only hit the "tilde" key four times, as in ~~~~. That'll automatically sign and date your comment. Signing in this manner is required here, as exchanges between editors can become hard to figure out, without it. best, Shawn in Montreal (talk) 17:27, 20 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Oh, just one problem: I see you've removed the maintenance tag I'd placed on the article, without addressing the problem. That's a no-no. See, WP:MOSBOLD states that bold font should only be used in certain cases. Bolding each and every one of the structures and former streets as you've done is overuse of bold, and directly contrary to our layout guidelines. Would you mind removing that formatting? Do you know how? Shawn in Montreal (talk) 17:32, 20 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Let me know if you like the image I've added for Meredith House. If so, please feel free to add more, to the other sections you've created, keeping in mind that we have guidelines against adding too many images. Also, I believe some of the external links for houses that you've added for images at Wikipedia and Wiki Commons may violate our guidelines, too, as these are actually internal links, but one problem at a time. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 18:06, 20 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Please arrange the images as you see fit, I'll sit back and let you continue to lead the way. Just make sure you check out the Wiki Commons for the best images, see here, for starters. That image of Vincent Meredith house is blurry and dark and there are much better ones in its Commons category. And you're right, it is best to include as many internal links as reasonably possible, thing is, you link internally and externally in 2 different ways. An internal link is created by two opposing square brackets, like so: [[ ]]. (An external link, as you know, takes just one pair of brackets [ ].) There's plenty more detail you can find out about, and we have "gadgets" that you can enable in your preferences tab to make wiki-mark up a bit easier, but that's it, in a nutshell. Please let me know if you have any further questions.--Shawn in Montreal (talk) 18:49, 20 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Edit summaries

edit

Hi again. Just one more little thing: when we make edits we are generally required to state something in the window marked "Edit summary," to describe what it is we've done. It's not necessary 100% of the time; when it's something minor you can just check the box "This is a minor edit." But please do start using these two features. thanks and keep up the great work! best, Shawn in Montreal (talk) 21:48, 20 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

George Caverhill House vs Galt

edit

Why do you insist that it's Galt when both the Museum's website and the Wikipedia photo info identifies it as "George Caverhill's House"? Also, for the second time, please use edit summaries. Refusing to do so is very bad form, thanks. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 01:02, 21 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Responses

edit

In that case, don't you think it would be best to indicate the shared history for this house, as both Galt and Caverhill are both obviously connected to it? Not doing so will simply confuse other readers, like me, who click through to the Museum link and then see it associated with someone else entirely.

As for the Meredith image, it's not just a question of "lightness": the image you seem to prefer is so blurry and obscured so as to hide aspects of the home, that's something specifically addressed at Wikipedia:Image quality requirements. So no, I'm afraid I can't compromise on that when there are clearly better images readily available.

Finally, as you've perhaps noted I've begun to replace the inline links to McCord photo pages with references to reliable sources, which actually verify the claims made as to when homes were constructed, demolished, etc. -- details which do not appear on the McCord photo links. And made a few corrections in the process. You've clearly done a great deal of original research in this area, but I encourage you to support your statements about these properties with references.

I don't have the space here to walk you through it, but Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners can. best, Shawn in Montreal (talk) 11:42, 21 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Just saw your quick work on Galt/Caverhill. Excellent! Oh, and just one more thing (I hope I'm not bombarding you) we do place the references, that is to say, the subscript numbers for references, at the end of sentences or phrases, after punctuation, and not between. So it's period (or comma), then reference.[here] Shawn in Montreal (talk) 12:42, 21 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Howdy! You seem unfamiliar with the Wikipedia guideline on external links, WP:EL, which covers both what and how, in regard to link selection and placement. In particular, the very first sentence reads: Wikipedia articles may include links to web pages outside Wikipedia (external links), but they should not normally be used in the body of an article. (My emphasis). This doesn't apply to links embedded in references/citations, since while the links are written in the main text, they're displayed in the reference section. Studerby (talk) 16:41, 8 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

BTW, it occurs to me that many of the images that you were linking to ought to be in the public domain; if that's the case (and I can't advise you further about that, particularly because I don't know Canadian law), then you should be able to upload a few of the image files to Wikipedia, and have them display in the article directly. But please note Wikipedia tends to allow only a relatively few images per article; articles aren't supposed to become image collections. Studerby (talk) 17:19, 8 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Minor edits

edit

Some great edits but please do not mark them as minor unless they are genuinely minor. Thanks. --John (talk) 16:48, 22 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Please do not mark the addition of content as minor. The "minor edit" marker should only be used for the correction of typos or grammatical errors, etc. See Help:Minor edit for guidance. DrKay (talk) 09:51, 17 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hello and thank you for your contributions. I see that you are still consistently marking significant edits as minor. This is very confusing for other editors. Since you are clearly editing constructively, I'm sure it's not your intention to mislead anybody.
Also, marking an edit as minor is not a substitute for providing an edit summary. Although another editor may have implied this in an earlier comment, other editors might not agree. Summaries are less important for (genuine) minor changes, but a brief note like "fixed spelling" is helpful even then. See WP:FIES. Thanks! – Wdchk (talk) 17:12, 6 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • I just want to say that I'm greatly impressed by the work you've done on the Golden Square Mile! If ever you have time in your busy schedule, I was alternately wondering if you wanted to start the article on the Montreal Snow Shoe Club, which was a wonderful organization founded in the mid-19th century by Golden Square Milers, including many of the residents you've been documenting, I'm sure, and which conducted wonderful night winter hikes on Mt-Royal. There's a bit of info here, and some wonderful images here. Anyway, all the best, whatever you chose to do. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 12:58, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much Shawn, and I would love to. I will have to have a good old dig around, but will get on it! Parsica (talk) 13:03, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

James Johnston (1724-1800)

edit

Good work on the James Johnston article. I noticed that you added a picture, File:James Johnston (1724-1800).JPG. You indicated that this was your own work, but I don't think that's right. It looks like it's probably contemporaneous with the subject. I recommend that you change the license to {{PD-Old}} and, if possible, indicate where you found the image. Pburka (talk) 00:45, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. The picture belongs to me and I am not aware of another in existence. It is also unsigned so I do not know how else I could license it. Any thoughts? Parsica (talk) 07:32, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Artwork and photos are tricky. Just because you own a physical copy doesn't necessarily mean that you own the rights to distribute and reproduce it. But in this case it's not a problem. Because of its age you can just mark it as {{PD-Old}}. You should also explain in the description that it's from your personal collection. Pburka (talk) 00:49, 22 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Montreal Snow Shoe Club

edit

Hi again. If you add more photos to Commons category please note that I have corrected the name of the Commons category (and the main article) to Montreal Snow Shoe (two words) Club, in accordance with your use throughout the article text. I had had it the other way, but I'm sure yours is the right way, and it helps readers to be consistent. thanks, Shawn in Montreal (talk) 15:37, 28 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I saw the change and was grateful as had realised my mistake early on (MSSC, not MSC) - is there no way for someone like me to alter a title page if a mistake like that is made? Hope I am doing a good enough job so far (as is my way, I'm sure edits will continue for sometime until I am satisfied with it!)... There is only really one main source available to me about the MSSC (Becket's 1882 history), but plenty to sift through... Parsica (talk) 18:27, 28 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Slight problem: The page on the MSSC seems to have gone odd. Perhaps you could log into it and see what I mean, or perhaps tell me it is fine which might mean a problem at my end. Let me know, thanks.

Ravenscrag Mansion & Golden Square Mile

edit

Hi Parsica! Thanks for your comments about my article on Ravenscrag on french wikipédia! I appreciate! About the english version, I think your gallery is just fine! Also, I take this occasion to review some things about the text with you: I'll check again, but I think that the mansion was donated to the RVH in 1940, not 1942, and the number of guests invited to the Ball given in honor of Lord Dufferin was indeed 400, but only 300 actually went to the party. Furthermore, I want to compliment you about your contributions on the Golden Square Mile's article, it's pretty good!!--Thomas131313 (talk) 21:25, 22 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Palmes Family

edit

Hi Parsica

Some amazing work you have done on the Palmes Family. I was thinking, perhaps it might be right to include a bit more detail about the Malton Palmes and Ashwell Manor Palmes (main family seat for the Lindley Palmes's)

This caption could be of use. PS.jpg

Also I understand from Burkes http://www.burkespeerage.com/freesearchresults.aspx that Antony Bryan Palmes is now head of the family. He seems only to have had daughters but one has had 2 sons?

http://www.thepeerage.com/p52284.htm#i522840

With George Palmes's marriage to Margaret Isabella Lindsay, is it possible to include more about her lineage? I think she might be connected to the Earls of Crawford.

Yours,

Thank you very much for your message, I'm very interested by a couple of things you mentioned and will reply properly hopefully today if not tomorrow. Thank you again, Parsica (talk) 07:41, 30 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your message, I look forward to hearing your full response. Are you connected to the family in some way? Or just interesting in them from a historical angle?

Hi again, and thank you for your replies! Yes, my mother's great, great grandmother was a Palmes - a daughter of George (1776-1851) of Naburn and Margaret Lindsay - hence my interest in your interest on Margaret as I know next to nothing on her family, any notes you have I'd be grateful to see. I presume you are in some way connected to? I have only added a few notes from my existing notes on them, please of course feel free to add anything you know about the Malton and Ashwell Palmes', all I have garnered on them so far comes from Burkes. Thank you for your links: I oculdn't reach page 190 on the last one, but the others were very interesting - thank you. Looking forward to hearing from you, and thank you so much again, Parsica (talk) 10:55, 30 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi — Preceding unsigned comment added by Frenchtalkcity12 (talkcontribs) 12:07, 30 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your reply, which daughter, the one who married General Brotherton's son? Also I'm not sure that the Strickland Baronets were seated at Sizergh Castle, I believe Boynton Hall is their seat? The family still exist and their archive might be able to provide clarification? I have read some sources too which suggest that the Eure Barony (in abeyance) can be claimed by the head of the Naburn branch. Have you come across this too?

Also I'm interested to hear how you found info about Lindley Hall? I knew the family were seated there but have not heard anything about the house itself. I understand there was a lot of gambling and loss of property on the Naburn side, in fact George Palmes had to reduce much of the estates. Again the Ashwell Branch lost a great amount in the civil war and there was a fraud in the Exchequer too. http://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/ gives quite a bit of information about individual family members.

The Lindsay family may have a connection to this one, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lindsay_(admiral), I note that his sister was also called Margaret - perhaps not a coincidence. Also look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dido_Elizabeth_Belle. In the 'Late life' section is has the following: 'When Dido's father died without legitimate heirs in 1788 he left £1000 to a son, and £1000 to his other illegitimate daughter, Elizabeth Lindsay or Palmer (born c. 1765) who lived in Scotland, asking his wife Mary to take care of her. Mary Lindsay's will does not mention Dido or Elizabeth Lindsay. Lord Mansfield left Dido £500 as an outright sum and a £100 annuity in his will, and officially confirmed her freedom.[3]'

I know William Lindsay was of Oatlands, near Glasgow, so the location is right.

Great information, thank you, you are far better informed than I! You didn't mention if you are related or interested? If it is through interest, may I ask how that comes to be? I will follow up on all your notes, htough I was particularly amused to see the connection to Dido Belle/the Lindsays... General Archibald Campbell of Inverneill (who is also on wikipedia) was the brother of another of my mother's ancestors. Her ancestor, Willoughby Harcourt Carter (also on wikipedia) was the son on his mother's side of the Campbells of Inverneill and it was him who married Eliza Palmes, one of George's daughters. Thank you so much again, I am fascinated to look into/hear more about all the stories you have mentioned. Do you have an email I can contact you on out of the public eye? Speedy deletion nomination of Montreal Hunt

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Montreal Hunt requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://www.mccord-museum.qc.ca/scripts/explore.php?Lang=1&tableid=18&elementid=44__true. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Atlantic306 (talk) 03:40, 23 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for message. I've had another look at the deleted text, and I am satisfied that Atlantic306 was correct to nominate in good faith, and that my deletion was also correct. Much of the article was a copyright violation of this page. Copyrighted text is not allowed in Wikipedia, as outlined in this policy. That applies even to pages created by you or your organisation, unless they state clearly and explicitly that the text is public domain. The copied page was marked © McCord Museum.
I don't think there is any doubt here, at least five otherwise unreferenced paragraphs were copied verbatim from the source page, eg, the one beginning It was during this period that Baumgarten built and donated.... The copying even included unusual words like "fonds".
With regard to lack of warning, the point of speedy deletion is that the breach of our rules is so obvious that there is nothing to discuss. The fact that the copying was undetected for a length of time is also irrelevant, it's still not acceptable. ...had been read by those who work for the McCord Museum—irrelevant, text posted here has to meet our rules, and should not be pre-vetted by an interested party. If you have a conflict of interest when editing this article, you must declare it
We normally userfy deleted text on request, but we do no do so with copyright violations for legal reasons. You can appeal against the deletion here (read the boxed text), and you are welcome to suggest ways forward that don't involve restoring copied text. If you do so, please copy in Atlantic306

Hello, I'm RegentsPark. I wanted to let you know that I removed one or more external links you added to the main body of an article.   Hi Parsica! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia – it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you. RegentsPark (comment) 16:30, 2 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

You have been asked 4 times not to tag the insertion of content as minor, but you are still doing it. Continuing to perform edits after multiple warnings is disruptive. Please do not continue to make edits that appear disruptive. Continued disruptive editing may result in loss of editing privileges. Thank you. DrKay (talk) 13:31, 3 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
