friendly request for clarification

Hi, I'm totally new to Wikipedia, so I'm probably violating all kinds of etiquette at this very moment, for which I apologize, but I just wanted to ask about your comment on my edits on the Cabrini-Green page.

You wrote, "oh god, don't put that, even if you think you're 'helping out'!"

I just wanted to clarify--were you referring to the actual content (i.e., adding a section on tenant activism, which maybe was not totally NPOV), or were you referring to my, uh, "editorial" note--I actually wrote in the page "(need more here!)".....?

I'm thinking it was the latter, since you removed that, and Karmafist added a template thingy (?).

I had looked for the correct format for a section that needed more data (because I knew that tenant activism had started decades earlier, but only had details post-1996) but not found the correct format. So, just to verify, in the future, I should put what Karmafist did? ("expand section," in double squiggly brackets)

Baseball on Wikicities

Hello WikiFanatic, Googie Man here and I want to ask you something as a fellow baseball fan on Wikipedian. Jimbo and Angela have made a new webstie called Wikicities. This link in particular will take you to the baseball Wikicity. As you'll see it's similar to Wikipedia, but my hope is this will allow baseball fans to do more and different things, like reporting on games, in depth statistics, create mulitple pages for pictures, and whatever else baseball fans care to create. You've done great work on Wikipedia and I was hoping you could help get this baseball Wikicity off the ground. Newspapers used instead of blogs

I would like your feedback on the use of newspapers as a source instead of blogs. In the case of the Robert Clark Young article, I have found newspaper sources that cover much of the same material as the blogs that have been used in the article. When I replaced the blog sources with the newspaper sources, Alabamaboy reverted every single one of my edits. Also, very strangely, he accused me on the discussion page of being Mr. Young himself!

This is the Wikipedia Guideline I am trying to follow with my edits:

"Publications with teams of fact-checkers, reporters, editors, lawyers, and managers — like the New York Times or The Times of London — are likely to be reliable, and are regarded as reputable sources for the purposes of Wikipedia. At the other end of the reliability scale lie personal websites, weblogs (blogs), bulletin boards, and Usenet posts, which are not acceptable as sources."

Thus, I have replaced the blog sources with newspaper sources. Again, let me stress that this has not led to much change in the text of the article itself--what I'm trying to do here is change the nature of the sources so that they themselves comply with Wikipedia Guidelines.

Could Alabamaboy and I get some feedback on this? I wonder if you could go over to the Robert Clark Young history and compare both versions of the sourcing--the one using newspapers, and the one using blogs. Thank you. Berenise 01:46, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

First off, I apologize for Berenise's comment being spammed upon so many user's talk pages. However, since Berenise already placed it here I wanted you to be aware that there are three reasons the article was reverted: 1) Berenise made the changes despite a lack of consensus and my objections on the Talk:Robert Clark Young. In short, the online references are refered to in the newspaper and print articles, making the online sources primary sources. The article also has many print sources which complement and add to the online sources. 2) The edits made the article less NPOV b/c they removed opposing viewpoints. While these references may be online, they are from credible named sources who are considered experts in their respected areas. 3) There is a strong possibility that Berenise is Robert Clark Young. Young previously edited the article about himself and most of Berenise's edits since coming to Wikipedia have been to the Young article. I'm trying to clear this up with Berenise; once she proves she is not Young I'd love to get opinions from other editors about this situation. Entry on Steve Jobs

I would like to see some references for the claim that Steve Jobs was born in Green Bay, WI insted of San Francisco, CA. Afaik, every source I can find on the internet (which includes books) state that he was born in San Francisco not Green Bay. I also noticed you protected the page. I don't want to turn this into a 'revert war', and you are an administrator, but I would still like to see some references. Also see my comment in the :talk page on Steve Jobs.

I would also like an explanation on the editing of the quote mentioned in the article from "Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water, or do you want a chance to change the world?" to "Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water, or do you want a chance to puncture a hole in the universe?". The exact quote (from the book "Odyssey: Pepsi to Apple: A Journey of Adventure, Ideas, and the Future" by John Sculley, John A. Byrne) was: "Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water or do you want a chance to change the world?"

I believe he wasn't born in Green Bay, but the article here on Wikipedia says he was. Which means either the BBC, the book iCon ^pdf, this book, several others, and off course CNN are wrong OR he wasn't born in Green Bay like WikiFanatic states. I could probably find out somehow, maybe by checking out the necessary information from the California Office of Vital Records (like the mentioned article did). Either convince me that this man was born in Green Bay by using certifiable references (hereby proving all the previously mentioned sources forgot to do some serious fact-checking), or state that this man was born in freaking San Francisco like so many others seem to believe Oh and now suddenly nobody wants to pu(n)cture a hole in the universe? --Bruce 18:51, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

--California Office of Vital Records show he was indeed born in San Francisco on Feb 24, 1955. I corrected main article but someone changed it back to Green Bay. Sorry means that you would not do it again in future. You know that the last edit I made was to the talk page. You know that I hadn't edited the the page it self for 10 minutes when you hit me with the block which considering the previous intensity of the revert war suggests I was leaveing it alone at that point (in fact I was halfway through writeing a further talk page comment when you blocked me but no matter). You know your block was outside policy. Your support appears to have come from an unloged IRC channel. The normal approach would have been to bring it to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents and try and get support or otherwise for your actions. You did not. In summery you carried out an out of process block on an admin (probably the most effective way to trigger a wheel war know although you did get lucky there) refused attempts to comunicate and failed to try and disscuss your actions with the wider community. An Esperanzial note

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

WP:DATE. my understanding of this is that editors can enter dates in the format with which they are most comfortable. the display format for dates is an option in user preferences. not that you can't change it, but it's not an error either. Derex 19:20, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Regarding dates

Hey, I noticed your comment on the Bush article regarding the dates. If you click My preferences and choose Date/Time you'll see you have a chose on how to see the dates. In order for the mediawiki software to change the dates to your preference, they must be in ISO 8601 Format. Thus that's how the dates should all be but people get lazy and just write it out. If you write a date in ISO format and link it the software does the linking automatically as it should and the bots can better recognize it. Hey WikiFanatic, I’m here on behalf of Aranda56, he's asked me to review his 3RR case on IRC. I agree with the block, I saw 4 reverts that were not simple vandalism or self reverts. I'm requesting that you the blocking admin unblock him, because I disagree with going behind an other admin's back and making a change like that. I've told him that if you will not unblock him, then there is nothing I can do about it. I also told him that if it appears you've gone off-line, (i.e. you don't respond in 10-15 min) I'll unblock him assuming good faith that he will not violate the 3RR policy again. By all means if you come back in say 20 min and I've already unblocked and you wish to reblock, please just let me know, and then go right on ahead with reblocking. I've discussed the 3RR situation with Aranda56; given that blocks are intended to be preventive, rather than punitive (i.e., the reason for blocking for 3RR is to prevent the user from engaging in further reverts, not to punish them for making more than three reverts) I am going to unblock on Aranda's promise not to edit the page at all for the next 24 hours. I've made it clear that if I see any edits to the page before this time tomorrow, I will reinstate a full 24 hour block. I believe this is a fair deal, as it allows good work to continue, but prevents further reverting. I don't believe it is bending the rules; it is achiving what the rules are designed to achive while allowing good contributing to continue. (Also, Aranda56 is on an AOL IP, so there is a great deal of collateral damage from any block on that account.)

Of course, I wanted to let you know this as although Nlu has taken over the block, the original block was yours; if this is unacceptable to you, please let me know as soon as possible. Essjay ^{Talk • Contact} 20:59, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

New Sports Wiki

Hey WikiFanatic, me and a couple of my buddies hacked the Mediawiki engine and added a bunch of things to make a cool new sports wiki. Here's what we added:

First, we allow users to be able to submit news and opinion articles. Yes, that means there are some pages without a neutral-point-of-view. News pages and Opinion pages have little explanatory bars added atop their pages, explaining that the former may change rapidly (a la wikinews) and that the other should only have substantive edits made by the original author.

Second, we figured that people would want to discuss these articles. So we added blog-like commenting to those pages.

Then, we decided that having all these news and opinion articles is going to lead to a good deal of chaos -- how do we decide if Person A's opinion article about the Mets should be on the Mets page? Why not Person B's? So, we added a voting mechanism. Highest scores, based on votes and comments (and an aging factor) get published.

"Published" simply means that those stories automatically get bumped to the front page and the relevant team and player pages. For example, a News article noting that Benji Molina signed with the Blue Jays would, given enough votes, appear on the front page, the MLB page, the Mets page, and Molina's page.

The same thing is true for opinions. Highest scores are automatically published. But we added another thing for opinions -- "Opinion Clubhouses." They're basically blogs, in that the Clubhouses display links to the articles the author claims credit over.

Oh, yeah, and we have RSS feeds for all the News and Opinion stuff. (I still have to write the documentation for that, and another guy on our team is ironing out a bug or two.)

And of course, this is built on top of the encyclopedic aspect that, as a Wikipedian, you're already familiar with.

If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL.         • They were in a primarily French-language market. And their marketing was primarily in French. Their only hope for survival was to attract as many French fans as possible. Also given that the law forbade the use of English signs, etc., for most of their existence, are you surprised that their logo used an accent? However when they advertised in other languages, such as English, they used Montreal not Montréal, as evidenced by their former website, which I referenced. Also, it should be noted, that the article on Montreal itself uses Montreal rather than Montréal. Finally, when you heard the name spoken, by English-speaking people, do they call them the "Montreal Expos" or "Montréal Expos" (i.e. how do they pronounce Montreal, with or without the accent?             • I don't know, I've never heard of the guy, nor do I speak Spanish. I have no idea how your supposed to announce an accent aigu on the letter A. Hmm, looking at that article, it doesn't seem to effect the pronounciation, but the stress, putting the stress on the A, rather than the lex. All relax, it was quite quickly moved back. WikiFanatic, now that you've discovered Wikipedia:Requested moves, I suggest you use it for any article move that's likely to be controversial. For example, reversing an earlier move (Montreal Expos) or moving an article that has a high profile and lots of editors (London) is always likely to be controversial. And as well as nominating articles, of course we can always use another admin's help there to clear them up. This will also (very quickly I'm afraid) give you a better idea of what is controversial. Another Esperanzial note...

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Blanking of your page

That edit was not deliberate. The servers were having troubles at the time, and I suspect a software malfunction was responsible. I did not see that version after any of my edits, if I had I would have immediately reverted the damage. But, I did get a couple of MediaWiki errors at the time, including lost session data.
