Yasnaya Polyana

Actually, I disagree. The vague "number of other rural settlements" was in fact added by me. I am currently working on cross-linking/disambiguating the names of Russian districts, cities/towns, and urban-type settlements, so they explicitly link to where they should be located, even if an article does not exist yet. Eventually, I am planning to do the same for all Russian rural settlements (considering that each and every U.S. town, no matter how minor, has an article, I don't see why that shouldn't be done for Russian villages as well). This vague statement is a flag for me to look this name up in case I need to return to this article (usually when a settlement with of the same name is promoted/demoted); if it bothers you, I can certainly expand it to say what those rural settlements actually are :)

What's more, "Yasnaya Polyana" has other meanings not currently mentioned on the dab page. It is used as a trademark, as a name of entities other than settlements, etc, etc. There is a potential to expand the disambiguation page beyond the three entries currently there.

I'll expand the "rural settlements" entry per your request. If I may ask, what's so important about the one in Kaliningrad Oblast that it needs not to be lost among other ones? It's just another rural settlement among thousands others, and it is not even the largest of all the settlements by that name. It's the only one that currently has an article about it, but I suspect that's only because it used to be a town in East Prussia, so it gets more attention from the West. Anyway, I'm just curious. Bilingual titles

Hi, you just wrote on Talk:Soča - Isonzo River about naming conventions as an argument to move to a single name, as I proposed. Can you tell me where to find that specific naming convention? Although not meaning to, you have helped stir up quite a brew-haha on Erika Steinbach talk page. I ask you to close your current poll and declare it "inconsequential" so that a more neutral vote can be staged. Balcer keeps removing the more neutral vote because he says you must close your own poll first. the new vote is here now (Balcer kept removing my edits so I had admin help me) as you can see, the new one presents both sides, and if you look at your proposal, all the votes supporting it were posted before anyone posted any counter-points to your version. Not to mention that your poll has been degraded into a flaming war of personal attacks, accusations of sockpuppetry, defamations of characters, and people deleting other's edits. Your vote has become polluted to say the least, and although started with the best of intentions, it is time it should be ended.

Another possible interpretation is that Jadger wants a new poll because the option he supports is losing 9 to 3. None of the other voters have so far expressed support for his idea of restarting the poll. Really Balcer, I'm surprised you didn't just delete what I had typed, as you have done that repeatedly. the current version is not 9-3, votes have been removed by their poster from the support section but Balcer continues to count them. and I doubt any new possible voters would see the chance to vote in all the dribble of him flaming others. Also, Dr. Dan has supported my version if you would read what he stated. The current poll has run its course now one needs to shoot the racehorse that has broken its leg (figuratively speaking). As I stated elsewhere, a clear consensus on the unfortunately worded version of yours would not matter, as it would be like the last election of Saddam Hussein, no opposition properly represented, whereas I have properly represented both in the new vote, and have stated clearly that any flaming, trolling and Gerrymandering as Balcer is doing would not be tolerated on the new poll.

Jadger's distortions are a little bit pathetic, because anyone can simply look at the vote tally and trust his own eyes instead of what he says. The support column currently lists 9 support votes: Balcer, Prokonsul Piotrus, Thorsten1, ProudPomeranian , Space Cadet , abakharev, Halibutt ,Lysy, Pan Gerwazy. One vote in the support column has been changed to abstain. In the oppose column, we have 3 votes: Jadger ,Schwartz und Weiss, Stettiner. You, Olessi, stated you are fine with both versions. So the 9-3 vote result is clear, unless I am making a major mathematical error, which I am sure Jadger will point out to me. Balcer 15:08, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

German_placename_etymology

Besides the mispellings (which I suppose could be fixed), he does not cite his source that says that names such as '-witz' originate from '-wiec', could it not easily be the other way around? It may not be vandalism, but unless he cites something... Ameise -- chat 02:38, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

de:Ortsname lists many more suffixes than at the English article, several of which mention the Slavic connections. Some snippets:

• -itz, -itsch, -witz, -(sch)ütz: aus slawisch -ic- bzw. -ov-ic-, z. B. Rochlitz, Delitzsch, Doberschütz (1349 Doberschwicz zum altsorbischen Vornamen Dobrš)
• -ow (-au): aus slawisch -ov, z. B. Malchow, Lüchow

See also: -itz, -ow, -au, de:Patronym, Family name affixes. I am unaware if the -wiec suffix (such as in Sosnowiec) has any connection with wiec ("meeting"), but it wouldn't surprise me. On the other hand, I'm not aware of -itz or -witz having any meaning in German (aside from "joke"). This link has further information about the meaning of Polish suffixes. The anonymous editor went into greater detail about how the Czech and Polish suffixes were Germanized, but his/her additions are correct to my knowledge. Hope these links help. Well, you must remember that just because a city has a Polish name, does not mean that it was originally settled by Poles... a good example is Danzig/Gdansk, which was settled, in reverse order: By Poles, Germans, Poles, Germans, Poles, East Germans (Goths/Vandals), Celts, and whoever came before them... I doubt that any Indo-European culture founded cities such as those at such strategic spots -- there are other cities such as Lignica/Liegnitz which the form could be German -or- Polish, since apparently both could be formed from their respective words for 'to lay'... When German colonists settled in the east they gave their settlements obviously German names (Königsberg, Käsmark, Kronstadt), translated local names into German equivalents, or Germanized local names (Dorpat, Reval, Memel, Danzig, Bistritz, Prussian towns ending in -ehnen, etc.). "-vice", "-vec", "-ic", and "-ov" all mean something in Slavic languages. As far as I know, "-witz", "-etz", "-itz", "-ow", and "-au" do not mean anything in German (although "-au" has the unrelated water-land meaning). For instance, "Breslau" does not mean the meadow land of "Bresl", but is a linguistic corruption of the original Slavic name, which meant "the place of 'Vratislav'". The same occurred in the majority of German colonial cases. This link gives an example of the the Slavic (Silesian, in this specific case) origins of "-"ic" / "-ici". Also see -witz. While there may be exceptions, generally "-itz's" etc. were Germanizations of originally Slavic names. To conjecture about the unknown names before Poles or Germans (such as with Legnica) seems like original research, and is not relevant for this project. Olessi 16:15, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

My main issue is that many articles claim that cities which were once Polish or are Polish today were founded by Poles or other west Slavs; but they never give any evidence to this; is this not also original research? Ameise -- chat 18:56, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Brixen

I'm a bit in dubio about your move suggestion for Brixen. Brixen im Thale is known as well (resort town), but already disambiguated by "im Thale", so "Brixen" may be a better location than "Brixen, Italy". Do you want to put it on WP:RM? To both Olessi and Markussep. Why not make it simple and use Bolzano-Bozen, Merano-Meran, and now finally with this, Bressanone-Brixen. Remember this region is Italian-German. I'm from this region, and we don't start taking out the name of Bozen because most of the inhabits are Italians. The same, we don't take out Bressanone or Merano. take care. Prussia WikiProjects

Given your excellent work on articles related to Prussia, would you be interested in joining me in reviving the WikiProject Prussia? I have been working on redoing some of the articles on the various incarnations of Prussia and their subdivisions (going only to the province level for now - WikiProject Prussian provinces). You stated on the talk page for Kingdom of Prussia that you would like to see a better organisation for the Prussian articles. Spiš

Thank you for your message. It was a vandal called User:VinceB, who moved Spiš to Szepes county without any discussion. He did the same to at least one other article (Bratislava county > Pozsony (County)). He has been recently blocked for sockpuppetry and he is constantly vandalizing sensitive articles, in which Hungarian and non-Hungarian editors had previously maintained a neutral and balanced point of view. I stopped writing and expanding articles just because I have to deal with this guy every day. I do not know how to "un-move" an article, so I have no idea how to restore the Spiš article, on which many editors worked together before VinceB came. I would be grateful if you can help me anyhow. Hi again. In response to your second question here, I think a link to the mp3 interview would be acceptable if it met at least two conditions. First, it would have to be relevant to the article and important enough to include as a link. That would mean of course that the information contained in the link could not otherwise be added into the article itself. Second, the copyright issues would have to be looked at. I'm still fairly green when it comes to copyright issues, so I'm not the one to ask about that. I still find myself wondering why the Penny Flame article and the dozens of other porn actor articles like it are even on Wikipedia. To me, the right course of action wouldn't be to discuss which links should or should not be included, but to open a discussion about which porn actor articles should or should not be deleted. That being said, if you want to add the link again, I won't object or remove it. As I said before, I was following a pattern of edits by Luftballoons that looked to me like obvious spamming. Shiny new buttons

Two weeks ago I couldn't even spell administratur and now I are one (in no small part thanks to your support). Now that I checked out those new buttons I realize that I can unleash mutant monsters on unsuspecting articles or summon batteries of laser guns in their defense. The move button has now acquired special powers, and there's even a feature to roll back time. With such awesome new powers at my fingertips I will try to tread lightly to avoid causing irreversible damage and getting into any wheel wars. Restructuring the Prussian pages

Hi there Olessi. What are your thoughts about the restructuring of the Prussia page? I saw that you were keen to do this a long time ago, and I wanted to know if you still were. At the moment, I would say that most of the information on the main page be shifted to a new History of Prussia page, allowing room for other topics. The different versions of Prussia over time can have History sections of their own, linking to this history page - as I have done for the Kingdom of Prussia page and the new Free State of Prussia page. Freeing up space on the Prussia page should make it easier to resolve some of the context problems that have come up regarding various Prussian pages. Germany

The article is currently a Featured article candidate. As it is basically impossible to give an overview of German history in one page, we probably miss something important or overemphasize something that's not. Could you take a look and comment on the abridged version of German history? It would also be nice to know whether the article needs further copyediting (I can't really judge the quality of English writing, except possibly when people are writing about mathematics). I wouldn't have added the 95 theses (too detailed imho) but the Peace of Westphalia was indeed missing. The only problem is that once any detail is added, the history section starts growing like crazy and needs regular pruning. Anyway, thank you! Kusma (討論) 23:27, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

I noticed that you had cleaned up the article, and just wanted to let you know that I have inserted some fairly important but also possibly controvercial aspects of the early allied occupation. diff here. Another thing that should probably be mentioned is the largest ever recorded instance of mass rape (see Red Army atrocities), from what I've read in Norman Naimarks book it had a profound and traumatic effect on East German life for many years.--Stor stark7 ^Talk 01:05, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi - saw your 21Sextury Productions post at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Porn stars. I went to http://www.avn.com and clicked on "Site Search" in the upper-left corner; then entered "21Sextury" (just that--leave off the "Productions") in the "Title" field under the "Search Articles" heading (as opposed to "Search Film Reviews", which is below that section). It returns several good hits, one of which is Antigua Pictures to Distribute 21st Sextury Video. Careful gleaning of information from the other AVN articles might result in an article here; however, remember that notability guidelines need to be met; to avoid any challenges to the article, find additional published sources of information about the studio. It's okay to use some basic information about the company from its own website—say, when it was founded, who the owner(s)/officers are, etc.—but nothing that's just promotional, and definitely no "hype" (such as "the company offering the best....."). RE:Expulsion of Germans

thank you reverting anon 131, I have been having trouble with this editor, and he has been warned many many times my a plethora of people. He also put the same header at Estimates_of_number_of_deaths_in_connection_with_expulsion_of_Germans_after_WWII, which I reverted. The other article he likes to vandalize is Jan Dzierzon, and he also has a user account, he is also known as user:Serafin and his old user on German wiki was Aserafin and has been blocked there.
