AfD nomination process
editI noticed you added an AfD template to Evud. You need to do more than just add the template to complete the nomination. You can find complete instructions here. I completed this nomination for you, but you might find the link useful for future reference. --GraemeL (talk) 22:41, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the link to the instructions! Thing is, they don't seem to work. Step #3 didn't turn out right when I tried to add an entry for Pms clan. Can you detect what I didn't do correctly? Mikeblas 05:53, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
- Ah, you're getting confused between speedy delete and Articles for Deletion. If an article meets the criteria for speedy deletion, all you need to do is add the template and an admin will delete it if they agree with your reasoning. If it doesn't meet any of the speedy delete criteria, you need to go through the instructions I linked to submit it to AfD. --GraemeL (talk) 14:14, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Nice work by you and Woohookitty on this article, which I had tagged as speedy. At the same time, I tagged Madame Amberly, The Evil Twins, Evil Crash, and Ebeneezer Von Clutch, as it looked like the user was adding page after page of utter nonsense. I don't have a clue about this stuff, and it looks like gamecruft to me, but since you took the time to clean it up I suppose I'm wrong. So I'm guessing these are all related, and I will un-tag them, and if either of you have an interest, I'm sure you can add some context. thanks! bikeable (talk) 06:07, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for noticing! I'll touch-up the other categories... though I do agree the topics are cruft. I'm not sure why there needs to be a topic for every character in every ficticious work, but that's a bigger issue than I can solve! Mikeblas 06:23, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

Stubs under mu
editHi Mikeblas - I've answered at the stub sorting page, but I'll answer here tooa lot of people were complaining about the stub categories cluttering up the main part of the categories, so we decided to put them right at the end of all the subcategories by using a non-alphabetical character. A lot of recent stub categories are listed under μ, to stand for "micro" (i.e., "very small articles"). Grutness...wha? 23:26, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation, Grutness. I guess that makes sense, but it seems a little opaque, though -- isn't a better solution available.
near copyvios
editYou said you had found a number of near copyvios. Can you give me a list, or at least a sample, I'll hunt around and see if I can find where to ask for a second opionion. RJFJR 14:48, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
- Hey, RJFJR! Thanks for helping. So, let's start at Audio artist. You can compare that to this site [1]. If you look at the original author's contribution list, Special:Contributions/128.237.11.72, you'll see the rest of the pages that started their life out this way, all partially copied from that opfro.org.
- opfro.org has things like "open" and "free" in its name, but I don't see a terms of use page or a "we're this open license" page. It looks like it intends to be some sort of business process reengineering IT site, but then that would mean that some of these topics (like audio artist) are quite out of context. Lots of information isn't there, particularly anything that unites these terms into a cohesive group -- like "IT roles in the opfro methodolgoy", or something.
- What do you think?

Fun projects
editFinding a fun project depends on what you consider fun. There is a long list of requested articles, a list of requested images if you have a digital camera or equivalent, if you'd like to add to short articles then there are a lot of stub articles that have been carefully classified by subject. If you'd rather work on cleaning up or doing wiki markup there are articles for cleanup and to be wikified. What kind of work would you like to do?
- Wikipedia:Requested articles if you want to create new articles
- Category:Wikipedia requested images Articles that need pictures if you have a digital camera or equivalent
- Category:Stub categories Articles to expand because they are too short.
- Category:Cleanup by month if you want to do copy-editing and fixup (also a lot of formatting, need to check some for copyviolation)
- Category:Articles that need to be wikified These still need marking up with wiki-markup and formatting
- Wikipedia:Deadend pages A lot of these are alos wikify (they have no links in them yet). Can be easy but a lot of them are done.
- Category:Category needed Articles that need to be classified into categories.

- Most topics for cities in the US have a line that gives their location with latitude and longitude. According to the style guide for numbers, these topics should be using a template so they have a clickable link to a mapping service. I'd like to write a robot to make the necessary edits to bring the topics up to spec.
- I don't think I'll have any problem with the programming. But with whom should I raise this idea to see if it's a good one? That it doesn't conflict with another effort, or other plans for the involved template or the products? That it's a desireable change, and so on? And how could I find a wikipedia robot mentor? -- Mikeblas 22:32, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Lambda calculus in category process calculi?
editI noticed that you have added the lambda calculus category as a subcat of the process calculi cat. I'm not certain that this makes sense, since the lambda calculus isn't (AFAIK) generally considered a process calculus. I was wondering what your reasonong for making this subcat connection was, and whether you'd object to my removing the connection. Thanks. --Allan McInnes 00:13, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
- Oops! My mistake; feel free to revert it. -- Mikeblas 00:25, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
Motherboards
editI do not know the category structure there. I removed it because it seemed too general (although there might be one for motherboard manufacturers, and if not, then there would be a less specific component-manufacturer category.) If it has been established that Category:Motherboards is the best for that article, then by all means add it, but it seemed too general. Thank you for the message Paul 23:58, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
- Now that I look at it, it appears as if the category "Computer hardware companies" works best, but again if you think it should be otherwise then make the change.
Re-adding category
editSounds fine, it's good to see pages being watched and actively maintained rather than dumped here and simply tagged for cleanup like so many seem to be. My edits are generally a type of meatball surgery; I often make general improvements and hope that someone knows more about the subject than I do who will do the short strokes. editSorry for the delay but I've responded at the wikiproject talk entry. — Graibeard 10:03, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
- That all looks good. The only extra thing I did was create a few redirects for alternative names such as Wheeling machine etc. It's worthwhile doing as it saves someone else duplicating the page when they find no entry under their preferred spelling, which then saves on the merge debates :-)
- It's also worth adding the wikiproject notice template to the talk page, especially as our article namespace wikilink will be disappearing RSN — Graibeard 01:16, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

String disambiguation and fixing dab pages
editI'm glad to see you finished disambiguating String. Hopefully the merging of String with Strings will be taken care of soon. Just for next time, when you finished fixing a disambiguation page, in addition to crossing it off, you want to move it from the "To Do" list to the bottom of the "Done" list. Happy disambiguating! -- Natalya 03:31, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Now! again
editHi,
Regarding the activity on the "Now!" pages, I should make clear that I didn't initiate this. Another user was moving the existing (un-suffixed) pages describing U.S. releases to (U.S. series) pages, then putting the U.K. releases on the un-suffixed pages. (Actually, the newbie in question also made a former redirect page into a cut-n'-paste copy, which was *not* good).
I thought this was biased (towards the U.K. releases) and confusing (as a large proportion of people would type in the bare name expecting the U.S. release), so encouraged him to at least be consistent.
Personally, I'm not really too bothered about cases where only one "Now XX" has been written up under the bare name, so long as it makes clear which series it's in.
Anyway, if you strongly disagree with my position on this, please let me know. As I said, I didn't start this burst of activity, and didn't want it to appear as if I was promoting my position for the sake of it.
Fourohfour 12:49, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
- I've let you know at least twice that I disagree. I also indicated that I wasn't sure how to proceed (I'm doing what the project originally suggested, and it makes sense to me. You've got an alternative. How do we form consensus?), and devided to contribute elsewhere. -- Mikeblas 20:54, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
- The "original suggestion" was (given all evidence that I could reasonably find, including several histories and discussions) the result of one person taking it upon themselves to add the albums to the list. That's it; there's no evidence of any prior discussion or consensus whatsoever, which was the reason I didn't place significant importance on it.
- I don't even know if that person (dormant since November; I can't get a reply from them) knew there were different series; the albums went up to fifty-something, indicating that they wanted the U.K.- not U.S.- series. However, this was never made clear, and suggested it hadn't been thought out.
- As for a proper consensus; I already tried two ways (including an RfC), and there were too few responses to make a convincing case either way. Notable or not, I don't think that many people feel strongly about the issue.
- Anyway, I apologise for bringing this up. The only reason I mentioned it was to point out that I hadn't done things this way for the sake of it; I felt this was preferable to duplicate pages and U.K.-centric renaming.

Deletion from the Loran article
editI saw where you deleted what I wrote on the Loran page. While this was a very fine article (I am assuming that it is yours), you fail to address why the United States government and European government have decided to spend millions of dollars updating and keeping Loran going when it has been largely supplanted by GPS.
The reason is that if the GPS system is ever attacked by terrorists that we will have a reliable back-up. Hokeman

Spelling correction in source code
editHi Mike,
I agree that in general spelling corrections in code are dangerous, and I do look out for this sort of thing. In this case, however, I was just correcting the spelling of a variable name, and some comments.
Since this is intended as sample code, I figure it can't hurt to have the right spelling.

Canon Reference
editSure, I'll post the article reference in discussion. This is sortof old news, for what it's worth, but Canon keeps fighting it. I didn't worry about posting a citation since 1) there was no original citation to begin with and 2) I generally don't cite for information that doesn't exist (as I cut out the paragraph in entirety. Madmaxmarchhare 18:00, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
- Also, you may want to note:
- Hi! Can you explain your edit to the Canon article about their stopping film camera development? Your only comment was AP apparently mis-reported their intention to stop making SLRs),
- The paragraph I deleted had nothing to do with them stopping film camera development, it was about, as I stated in my memo, Canon stopping SLR development. Madmaxmarchhare 18:20, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

When two articles are just copies of each other, with the same author, there's really no need to discuss merging. A lot of times this happens just because new editors don't know about redirects, so they enter the same content twice. I just changed Yvette Wilde to redirect to the other title. Fan-1967 13:40, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know! I use the merge tags because there's no way to tell if the versions are identical. We can compare revisions of individual articles, but not different articles. How can you get a diff of two different articles? -- Mikeblas 16:04, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
- Actually I just eyeballed them, and then looked at the edit histories. While it's conceivable there were differences, it seems unlikely. The edit histories showed they had been both been repeatedly updated by the same person at the same time (User:Yvette38dd), so it's reasonable to assume she was putting the same content in both places. Mitsubishi 3000GT/GTO
editI've just finished tidying the Mitsubishi GTO article which, as I said on the talk page, involved taking the two pages about this car and splicing the info together as best I could. I've put forward another merge/redirect proposal on the two talk pages, but since you did the big tidy up last month I thought I'd contact you personally.
First, I pruned out the transmission/reliability stuff as being too unsourced (the bit about the Getrag lawsuit even had a {{citeneeded}} tag. Also, some websites were conflicting with our wheel/tire info so I pruned that out too until it can be verified. As far as I can tell you were only the editor of these sections, not the author, so you won't be too pained by my cuts.
I've also kept my previously added section on the original 1970-75 GTO, which gave the later car its name. As a result of this, I think it'd be better to redirect to that page rather than vice versa. Thoughts? --DeLarge 14:56, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Academic Geography category
editHello, i've added the category to primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary sectors of industry as learning the classification of industry is a basic component of economic geography (as can be seen from this revision website:http://www.s-cool.co.uk/topic_principles.asp?loc=pr&topic_id=14&subject_id=20&ebt=215&ebn=&ebs=&ebl=&elc=4). The classification of industry is then used to examine the locational factors that affect industry and why some countries develop all four sectors and others do not. I hope this is helpful. Other editors have warned Cshay himself for failing to be civil [3] [4], so I don't think it's jumping to a conclusion to suggest that he's retaliating by leaving civility warnings on the pages of others, and has no real interest in helping promote less friction in editing. -- Mikeblas 02:47, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

List of beat 'em ups undeletion request
editI have nominated List of beat 'em ups to be undeleted, under the reasoning that it is not redundant to the category; it contains many games which are not covered by the category, and may never be able to be covered by it. In addition, the list can do more than the category. It can put date, developer, release date, system, et al., useful especially for articles that would be difficult to create an article for. I hope that you will vote on this and hopefully support its undeletion, on the basis that it does something that makes it not redundant to the category. Vim: open source biased/unbalanced?
editHi!
I noticed you added an 'unbalanced' tag to the Vim page. Your reason was that it did not discuss the problems of open source.
Personally I don't think this a reason the tag should be there. I mean, just because Vim is open source doesn't mean it has to criticize this. People wouldn't go clapping 'unbalanced' tags on the Microsoft page, just because it doesn't contain a complaint against closed source.
A critism of open source should be on the Open source and Open source software pages instead, shouldn't it?
I welcome your feedback (please reply on my talk page).

Landsburg thing
editI wish you would replace "module patching," which you recently deleted from the Steven Landsburg page. Landsburg himself helped me write the article and pointed out errors in in. If the thing about module patching was not true, he would have told me. Thanks. Gnossie. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gnossie (talk • contribs)
mikeblas, your inference in this matter is unwelcome and amateurish. Merely because YOU can't find any references to "module patching" doesn't mean anything. I, a professional economist, wrote that page with the assistance of its subject, Steven Landsburg, based on easily verifiable sources. That, I think, should be enough to settle the matter. But oh no! You come in and merely because a perfunctory searching on module patching on your part failed to come up with any links between the two, conclude the link is false. IF YOU HAD SEARCHED IN A MORE STRINGENT MANNER, you would, one imagines, have entered "Steven Landsburg" on Google at some point. The first link is to his page at the University of Rochester. From there is a link to an informal kind of resume about him, hosted by the that university. (http://www.landsburg.com/about2.html) Module patching is mentioned twice on that page, and links to his papers on the subject (e.g., "Patching and Birationality") could be arrived at within a few clicks. You were unable to find this, and so deleted it from Wikpedia??!?! Sheesh. What else are you up to? What's next, deleting references to "the Sun" merely because you can't find any online evidence that it's over your head? Hence: you have now wasted my time and his, since, instead of merely replacing the text, you forced me to double check with him and re-locate the reference myself. I pray you now replace the text you erroneously deleted. Gnossie 18:35, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
Howdy Mikeblas: Your suggestion that I familiarize myself with Wikipedia's policies on editing is rich; certainly it would behoove YOU to review their guidelines on civility. [6] As you doubtless know, it isn't the fact of your editing aritcles per se that is unwelcome, but your petulant refusal to undo your changes once it was patently demonstrated how off-target your pawing around was. How petty. You should have simply admitted you made a mistake and fixed the article. Instead I had to. Sheesh! Neither shall I annotate the page further: merely because you don't understand something is, I feel, no reason to make a footnote there. Glossing it in-text would suggest this (quite incidental) claim is controversial and in need of buttressing, which it is not. Perhaps, since you feel it's so scorchingly critical, you can append a note on Landsburg's talk page with a link to the material. That might be a way to help the page, as you say, "realize some progress." Regards, Gnossie 05:48, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
