Block of school address

I left the following message on Can't sleep, clown will eat me's talk page:

You blocked this IP on 23rd of may for 99 hours. This is the IP (61.69.12.19) of my school's computer labs, is there any way to block anon editing whilst allowing legit users (such as myself) to contribute? Also, 99 hours is more han 4 days!, this IP will probably always cause trouble, but can you keep future blocks to <2 hours or so (the time in the computer room is divided into 1 and a half hour blocks). I would also like to say thast i acknowledge that a lot of junk comes from this IP, but i really want to edit during the boring lessons. MichaelBillington 08:17, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Hello Michael. To the best of my knowledge, Wikimedia does not allow any type of "whitelist" when the underlying IP address is blocked for various reasons. You may want to try connecting to Wikipedia using the secure link at https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Special:Userlogin but I cannot guarantee that this will resolve the problem. (I have received reports that this is a work around solution, but can be slow at times.) In any case, if the vandalism from your school persists, please have your system administrator contact me at the email address posted on my user page and we will work this out through our WP:ABUSE resolution process. Thanks! Can't sleep, clown will eat me 08:23, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Please substitute templates

Hello MichaelBillington. When you use template tags on talk pages, it'd be much appreciated if you could substitute according to the guidelines at Wikipedia:Template substitution. Just add subst: to the tag; for example, {{subst:bv}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template. Thanks. :) // Rory096 08:40, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for that, i'll keep it in mind. MichaelBillington 08:41, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

I left the following message on Shultz IV's talk page:

I just tagged a slander page for deletion, the page was written by User:Thedor. You have left this guy his last warning, so i thought i'd ask for you to block him. (i'm not an admin, i hope you are!) MichaelBillington 12:45, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm not an admin either (though I hope to be by late 2007 or 2008). However, I did add info about him on WP:AIV. --Shultz IV 12:47, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

I left the following message on Antandrus's talk page in relation to a suspected 3RR breach:

I have seen the history of this page, 8 edits today! (and counting) this is a clear breach of 3RR. I suggest you stop before someone takes action. If you have a good reason, please do inform me, as i am tempted to take action. MichaelBillington 03:38, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

WP:NCV. I'd actually appreciate your help fighting him. Thanks. Antandrus (talk) 03:39, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
Anyway, I just protected the page, so he'll move on to another target shortly. You might notice that every one of his reverts was from a throwaway vandal account. Blocking him under 3RR is pointless: we block all of his accounts. Antandrus (talk) 03:41, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for explaining, I thought it was just an edit war. But it seems I was wrong. (sorry) MichaelBillington 03:44, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
I stumbled accross the page from Newbie contributions, I'll keep checking there. MichaelBillington 03:46, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
Good link! Thanks--that's a great place to look. Almost all of that kid's edits are from brand-new, throwaway accounts. We used to be able to range-block him but he's got a new ISP now. Antandrus (talk) 03:48, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Re:Afd for manbeast

You created Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Manbeast, it that a DELETE vote at the top of the page. If so then this is 3-0 to delete, otherwise 2-0. Only the very start of this debate and the result seems clear. I informed the author of the voting but he hasn't yet added his own vote. This one is going to be DELETE for sure. MichaelBillington 11:36, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi. I nominated the article for deletion, and that does mean that I want the article to be deleted. However, AfD is not a vote; and it lies completely on the discretion of the administrator, who with his knowledge and experience of the wikiguidelines and policies to delete or keep the article. Preview

I left the following message on Suttungr's talk page:

When you are editing an article many times over a few minutes, consider using the 'Show preview' button (to the right of 'Save Page'), this makes it easier for you to see any mistakes that you may have made, before the page is saved. Editing an article several times in quick sucession fills up the Recent changes log and should be avoided wherever possible. Leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions. MichaelBillington 06:08, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip. I try to remember using the Preview button, but sometime I forget. --Suttungr 06:12, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

I left the following message on Tangotango's talk page:

I haven't a clue what this article is on about, but I see you know japanese. If you think this page is notable (event though I know you don't) could you move it to the japanese wikipedia? Note that I don't even know if this is japanese or not, but it isn't english. MichaelBillington 07:05, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi Michael, unfortunately this article is in Chinese, so I can't understand much of it. However, it does look like it's mostly about someone's university career, so I doubt it's notable enough to be cross-wikied on to the Chinese Wikipedia. Adolphus79 tagged it for speedy deletion, so I've added "and looks non-notable" to the reason. Hopefully an admin will come and look at it soon. Cheers, Tangotango 07:09, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
I just looked at it more closely. It has the (english) words Rebecca Cartwright and Dancing with the stars, I think I will remove the speedy delete tag and replace with something else. Note that rebecca is a big celebrity over here in Australia. Cheers! MichaelBillington 07:13, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
Okay. It's your call. Cheers, Tangotango 07:22, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

What did I do right? :-)

Dweller 08:54, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm glad you like it. If it may be of interest, here is my reasoning:
I was startled when I saw how many edits you have clocked up over the last two months. You have made around 650 edits in the last two months alone. I think all wikipedians should get the recognition they deserve from such a good lot of contributions, so I chose the working man's barnstar so you could see how much everyone appreciates you helping out here. You asked what you did right: You found something that interests you, and you expanded on the articles in your field. Keep it up and happy editing! MichaelBillington 09:12, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Turbo C++

hello, i read ur article on turbo c++ & found it quite helpful........but can u name a few sites where i can get turbo c++'s latest versions(turbo c++ v4.5 or builder X) free? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 158.144.44.129 (talkcontribs) 21 June 2006.

In response to your question, you can get Turbo C++ 3.0 from here. I haven't seen 4.5 for download but a quick google search should find it for you. I use turbo C++ because my internet connection is too slow for me to download a better compiler, but if you have broadband then I suggest you check out something better. Turbo C++ is rather old, and it can't compile the latest code, so if you wan't to get a recent compiler that is free, there is a list here that you may be interested in. Thank you for using wikipedia, if you have any further questions then leave a note on my talk page. MichaelBillington 10:53, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

IMDb

Hi Michael, just wondering about your IMDb = notability standard, especially given your contradicting votes at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Formula (2002) and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Peter Haynes. IMDb attempts to include all actors, films, tv shows, crew members etc. and is, in that regard, an indiscriminate collection of information. It is also a commercial site where anyone can pay to become listed, either for "involvement" in something they came up with themselves, or by buying a credit, for example the 4,500 "producers" of The 1 Second Film, who paid $1 for their status.

Basically, having an IMDb listing does not in anyway guarantee notability, it is simply the case that a great many notable people are listed in IMDb. Using this as the sole criteria to keep ignores WP:BIO and the other established notability guidelines. I hope you see where I'm coming from? nice one, Deizio talk 13:56, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Incase you haven't seen by my voting habits, i'm mainly an inclusionist, so I look for any excuse to keep a page. I never knew IMDB was commercial though; it's like i've been citing the yellow pages in AfD! (though slightly different) Anyway, you probably want to read: User talk:WCityMike#People's Comments on My AfD Votes, he's been deleting stuff at a rate of 50E99 pages a day for a while, I hope he never makes admin or the encyclopedia will be halved! To keep with my inclusionist values (no it isn't a religion) I voted keep on a whole tonne of things he nominated yesterday based on 2 things: google hits & IMDB listing. You are robably right in saying it doesn't gain a page notability, so I suppose I should do my research next time, eh? I'm going on a short wikibreak so you wont have to put up with opinion-based votes from me for the next few days :-). See you around. MichaelBillington 00:42, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
Sweet - open, considered inclusionism is a wonderful thing. As for Mike, he hasn't been deleting stuff, rather nominating stuff for deletion - personally I think it's great to see someone who believes in AfD enough to list all those articles, whose future will be decided by the community. He's also clearly happy to be "wrong", too many editors don't list articles for deletion for fear they will be kept. While excessive deletionism will put a lot of people off in an RfA, plenty of deletionist admins are able to be entirely neutral when making final decisions about AfD, speedies and prods - any admin who acts out of process, in pursuit of inclusionism or deletionism will be quickly noticed. Enjoy your break! Deizio talk 00:53, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Impostor?

I recently welcomed User:Coolcat789, this name is quite similar to yours, i'm not really sure what to do but I thought i'd let you know anyway. MichaelBillington 02:26, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

I thank you for notifying me. User creation log indicate the account in question was created by User:Coola1800 at 21:15 hours UTC on 22 June 2006. Same log indicate that account for User:Coola1800 itself was created quite some time ago at 20:27 hours UTC on 27 April 2006. Neither user has any edits.
Judging from the absence of other accounts, I conclude that these are not created from the use of a public computer or a proxy which would be expected from an impersonator.
Creating multiple accounts without using either is strange to say the least but so far nothing implies impostoration. Hence we should treat him like a legitemate user. Haveing said that, staying vigilant would be a prudent course of action. I'll watch "both" of them for a while.

Re: Edit for 'vandalism' on 2006 FIFA World Cup

hi, i believe you reverted the 2006 FIFA World Cup page uneccessarily by removing the following alleged 'vandalism' re:the time of kovac's for croatia against Australia in Group F on the 22nd of June: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=2006_FIFA_World_Cup&diff=60148802&oldid=60148576

may i turn your attention to the FIFA match record: http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/w/match/44/mr.html which points out that the particular goal was in fact scored at 56 minutes not 57' as you had re-edited as being. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 59.167.39.112 (talkcontribs) .

I have read your message on my talk page. If you have not already done so then I invite you to put the actual number on minutes back into the article. This was my mistake here, as we often have a problem where users change statistics in articles in order to make wikipedia less accurate and essentially destroy our reputation. We call this 'sneaky vandalism'. It seems you were innocent of this and i apologise for any trouble I may have caused you in reverting the page. Thank you for notifying me of my mistake. You may want to consider getting an account if you plan to stick around. It is as easy as clicking the link it the top-right of your screen that says 'sign in/create account' and following the instructions. MichaelBillington 05:45, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

INSERT disambiguation

Why did you remove the INSERT Linux reference in the disambiguation page? It is a useful tool that I and many others use. My intention was not to spam. I am not a developer of INSERT.

(I'm a new Wikipedia user.)

Thanks, ManiacalMonkey 19:04, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi manicalmonkey, i saw your message. if you want to, you can add an article to the encyclopedia about INSERT linux, but links don't really help out much (you may want to read this page). I think a good way about adding info to the encyclopedia would be to write a page about INSERT, and then add it to Category:USB distro, which is a full liust of all distros that can run from USB (although not yet complete). Sorry I don't have time to write a longer reply, but it's 10pm here. Leave a message on my talk page if you need help with anything. MichaelBillington 12:08, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Hello! i saw your message on my talk page, but then I saw your user page. Unfortunately, we can't currently give this tool to anyone who has navigational popups installed. We had quite a large problem on the main page when an administrator was taking MWT for a test drive. See here for proof. I would be interested in this once the issue with popups is fixed. Yanksox 02:48, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Reversion of Regis Philbin vandalism

When you removed "a ton of crap" from the Regis Philbin article, you removed much more than crap. You removed several sections, cats, and other languages. I know you mean well, but be cautious whenever you fight vandalism to not overdo it. --Tinlinkin 03:01, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for telling me, that was my mistake there. I'll try not to let such things happen again. Actually, I think this was caused by me hitting the "save" button before the page finished loading, as I too was trying to version 61051469 by 65.60.70.163. me waiting a few more seconds should fix the problem though, anyway, i'll see you around. Talk:Cable spaghetti

Could you please explain on Talk:Cable spaghetti? Thanks. I'm not challenging you or anything, I guess I'm just not seeing it =D Thx--mboverload@ 09:22, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Oh well, better point it out then:
page says: "Cable spaghetti can be reduced or even eliminated with a properly designed and used cable management system. However, due to the nature of the work being a time consuming trial-and-error process, few users bother or attempt it."
Then, lower down, says: "Cable management systems are extremely popular and widely used for things such as data centers, which have a massive number of computers in a small space. Cable management is included in many racks and things such as raised floors or overhead cable conduits mean more options in the placing and interconnection of cables."
Not sure which is right, but i'm no cable spaghetti expert, so I wouldn't know where to find a source (opens up google :D ) MichaelBillington 09:28, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
Ahhh, I see your point, keen eye. I'll think about it, thanks for pointing that out. If any editor wants to try their hand go ahead. --mboverload@ 09:37, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Although I am guilty of being part of the "cabal link user base" of VP, as one of its first users (and I think the first moderator AD assigned) may I please officially apply to be a MWT tester. Promise I will be very uncabal-like with it ;) - Glen 12:18, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Sure thing, I'll DCC it to you next stable release. MichaelBillington 01:10, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Bot Idea

I have an Idea for a Bot. When coderwiki gets big enough, i'm going to need a bigger server, so i'll at that point set up namespaces and perhaps a bot could be written to move all the documents from coderwiki.com to coderwiki-almostlive.com and then at last minute, i switch dns.

i dunno, images can be manual, i just cant turn on namespaces without the pages disappearing. --da404LewZer 18:22, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Do i know u?

Hey, I think I might know you :) Do you live in Melbourne by any chance? --Deon555|talk|e|Review Me! :D 08:27, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Yes, that's quite likely. Mount Dandenong, Victoria to be specific. You may also know Shan and Cain. If you feel enthusiastic, do add to St. Joseph's College, Melbourne as well :D. See you around. Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 09:26, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

RfA

Not that it's likely to matter, but your neutrality on my RfA is based on my sig containing an image. I am curious what you mean; my sig has always been text. Septentrionalis 03:08, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

See reply on your RfA page. Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 03:51, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Don't worry!

No, don't worry about changing the template (on my userpage); its only the backup copy anyway, I did my proper one last week. Thanks anyway, MJ Marbles333 14:41, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
