Hi Melanie. You seem to have an affinity to this editor. He's trying to Wikilawyer with me, but he'll only end up of making an enemy out of me instead of a friend. Perhaps you can spread some of your magic calming dust. Cheers, --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 11:06, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

Camille Cosby

Thank you for protecting the Camille Cosby page. That was getting tiresome removing unsourced comments about her husband's sexual abuse allegations. -- Kbabej (talk) 20:29, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

2014–15 S.L. Benfica season

@Alexf: Block evasion on 2014–15 S.L. Benfica season. SLBedit (talk) 21:44, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Hello! You are talking about the edits by the "new" user 85.245.81.143 ? I don't have the ability to confirm whether that is someone evading a block. Maybe Alex does? --MelanieN (talk) 22:08, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
Possibly; can't confirm for sure. Edits are not the same. -- Alexf(talk) 00:50, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
@Alexf: Now it is possible. See the edit summary. I have requested page protection and reported the user for vandalism. SLBedit (talk) 09:55, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

@Atsme: I don't know what you mean. According to the article history [1] there have been no edits to the article since I put in the protection. --MelanieN (talk) 00:02, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

My apologies. I didn't realize it was on the Talk Page - clearly disruptive. AtsmeConsult 00:44, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

@Atsme: Well, at least they are no longer messing up the article. Talk pages are almost never protected. And it might cause more trouble than it would solve to delete the comment as trolling. I would say just ignore them unless they begin swamping the page, and then I would try AIV. P.S. what pictures??? --MelanieN (talk) 00:51, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

Puzzled about the semi-protect allowing a brand new user to post edits

Hey Melanie, I realize you recently got the mop (congrats!), but can you figure out why the semi-protection on Bobbi Kristina Brown is allowing a user who had apparently made no previous edits (Special:Contributions/Izfumbles) to edit the article? Maybe there's something I'm missing, but I thought auto-confirmed editors had to have made at least 5 edits or something. Thanks! Anyway, that user needs a block for repeatedly adding that she is dead (a clear BLP violation). Softlavender (talk) 03:57, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

Actually, I think with all the media and fan fervor over the possibility that Brown could be taken off life suport, full protection might not be a bad idea for a week or so. It's going to get worse before it gets better, in my opinion. -- WV 03:59, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
No, can't do that, because when she does officially die, we can't wait for adminstrative action before posting that. All we need is functioning semi-protection and sufficient eyes on the article. When she dies and we report it, might consider full protection then. Softlavender (talk) 04:03, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
Well, yes, it can be done. The impending death of an article subject - since when is that a reason why an article can't be full-protected if it's necessary? It's not policy, either, so... What's going to happen is continual edit warring until she passes (if she does). It's already happening and like I said, is just going to get worse the more the news/tabloids report on her. -- WV 04:06, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
  • WP:AUTOC says "most English Wikipedia user accounts that are more than four days old and have made at least 10 edits are considered autoconfirmed". Why was a six-day old account with only one prior edit able to edit the article? Softlavender (talk) 04:19, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
Deleted edits apparently count; he had 25 of them. —Cryptic 04:39, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, I was vaguely thinking that might be the case, but in my haste forgot to check his "edit count" page. Softlavender (talk) 04:43, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
Sorry I was away from the computer, and thanks for solving the mystery, Cryptic. Earlier today I slapped the semiprotection back on as soon as I saw IPs putting in misinformation, but now there have been half a dozen "barely confirmed" users adding the rumors. Here is what I think: I will add full protection, but for very short periods of time. That will allow the page watchers to relax for brief periods, and to add any actual news when the full protection expires - or else to whistle to one of the interested admins here, or post a requested-edit with citation on the talk page (those are not always responded to immediately, so shouting out to some known admins might be preferable). If anybody objects to this short-term full protection, I authorize any admin to reduce the protection level at their discretion and without checking with me first. --MelanieN (talk) 05:33, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

BK Brown

Melanie, just before you protected the Bobbi Brown article, some one put in a death date. She hasn't died. Please revert that editor's incorrect information. Thanks, -- WV 05:45, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

Never mind, I see you took care of it. Thanks,-- WV 05:46, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
Yes, luckily I am familiar with the Murphy's Law of Full Protection: the protected version is always the wrong one. 0;-D I know this has been a terrible burden on you page watchers; hopefully you can take a break now for a few hours. However I think full protection, with brief intervals for you guys to do your thing, may be necessary for a while. --MelanieN (talk) 05:50, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
I think full protection was the right move. Anything that's urgent (for instance, if she should die before the protection is up) can be taken care of with a protected article edit request, of course. Thanks so much for your help with this. It's appreciated. -- WV 05:53, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Thanks all. Now I can actually attend to what's important in my life. :) Softlavender (talk) 06:08, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

One more thing (Columbo voice): The first sentence of the body text in Bobbi Kristina Brown is now accidentally there twice. Also, could you wikilink Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown in that sentence, as the first iterations in the body text? Thanks, Softlavender (talk) 06:24, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

Done --MelanieN (talk) 06:30, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Hi Melanie -- can you re-protect the article? Somehow it got unprotected. I'm sure none of us want it to become a free-for-all again. Softlavender (talk) 03:42, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
The protection expired. It wasn't indefinite, it was for a week. I will definitely keep an eye on it, but at this point I can't reprotect it - because there hasn't been a resumption of the problems. We do not protect pre-emptively, only to stop a problem, and only for as long as necessary. The tabloids still appear to be full of rumors, so it may not be long before we have to protect it again, but for now I'm going to leave it open. If there was any editing you wanted to do, do it now! 0;-D If there is major news, or if the rumor-mongering resumes, we will have to resume the full-protection. Be sure to let me know if it starts up again, we don't want to go back to whack-a-mole. If you contact me and I don't respond, I might be traveling (as I will be this weekend; try User:Valfontis if you need help Saturday or Sunday). Or it might be a time-zone problem; try an admin in another time zone, such as User:Peridon or User:Kudpung. --MelanieN (talk) 03:58, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
Perhaps indefinite semi-protection would be a good stop-gap measure, since most of the disruptive edits will come from IPs and new users. Softlavender (talk) 08:15, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
Again, we're going to have to wait and see what becomes necessary. See WP:Protection policy#Vandalism. I understand your nervousness about this, and I totally agree we need to keep the page from getting vandalized or violating BLP. We can re-add protection if problems resume - or we could do it pre-emptively if there is major news about her. I am watching the page, as are others, so we can move quickly if needed. If protection is needed, it will probably have to be be full protection, since most of the additions last time were made by autoconfirmed users. But for now, it may be that the excitement about her has faded; certainly page traffic has fallen substantially.[2] --MelanieN (talk) 09:54, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
That's one. Waiting a little longer to see the pattern. --MelanieN (talk) 15:46, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

Admin help needed

To any talk page stalkers who are admins: I am requesting additional admin eyes on the page Bobbi Kristina Brown. This is a celebrity who was found face-down in a bathtub and has been on life support ever since. The tabloids are full of unverified rumors about pulling the plug, possible foul play, etc. - all of it with serious BLP implications. Even with semiprotection, the page was a frenzy of rumor-mongering, with two or three regular page-watchers playing whack-a-mole. So I have fully protected the page for a week. But if there is actual news, such as an official announcement of her death, we need to add it promptly. If there is such news, an admin will need to add it, as well as to tidy up dates, verb tenses, etc. The regualar page-watchers will tweak wording and sourcing from the talk page. Thanks for any help with this! --MelanieN (talk) 13:03, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

Update

Haven't been around but once or twice a week to opine here and there, real world keeps me busy. Wasn't sure if you've been an admin long enough yet that I owe you an apology for planting that seed. (After all, misery loves company.) I hope you find your niche and a little extra fulfillment from it. I'm glad you made the dive, the place is surely better for it. Dennis Brown - 15:54, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the note, Dennis, I'm glad to know you are still (sort of) around. No apology needed; actually, I have been enjoying it. One reason: I have been doing a lot of page protection. That is probably the only admin function that you get thanked for. And I know how helpful it can be, since I have on occasion been on the other side of the process, screaming for help with an out-of-control article. And it sometimes draws you into an interesting situation, like the one currently at Bobbi Kristina Brown - a volatile situation where there was so much rumor-mongering, even under semi, that I had to put it under full protection and watchlist it. I have done some article deletion - a couple hundred pages - but so far haven't attracted any flak for it; of course I leave the tough calls for somebody else to handle. 0;-D I am still avoiding the block button and have stayed away from the drama pages. When I have questions, Harry and Kudpung have been very helpful. So far I have added only one item to the "Things I have learned at Wikipedia" list on my userpage: "When you become an administrator, your user talk page gets a lot more interesting." I suspect I may be adding more as time goes on.
It was your input and guidance that convinced me to make the run; I'm just sorry you weren't able to nominate me, since you really should be the one getting credit (or blame) for my mop. Great to hear from you, my friend, and hang in there! --MelanieN (talk) 16:48, 12 February 2015 (UTC)
Being an admin sometimes reminds me of this Gary Larson panel: http://i.imgur.com/MTCp5qT.png Not to be confused with the Twilight Zone episode To Serve Man. There is a lot of joy mixed with risk, and it looks like you are taking the right approach, slow and steady. Dennis Brown - 17:30, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

Identity confusion

You placed a speedy deletion tag on Abdul Rauf (Taliban governor). As I explained here, I am sure the press reporting that conflates the former Governor with the Guantanamo captive is completely eroneous.

In 2010 Associated Press reporter Cathy Gannon was the first to repeat the claim that the former Governor and Taliban spokesman and the former Guantanamo captive are the same individual. Gannon quoted two senior Hamid Karzai officials in making this assertion. My personal guess is that those Afghan officials based their report on name confusion at Guantanamo. Sadly, this kind of name confusion was routine at Guantanamo.

For the reasons I stated on Talk:Abdul Rauf (Taliban governor), I am personally convinced there have been multiple individuals whose identities have been conflated.

As I stated on Talk:Abdul Rauf (Taliban governor) I am sure that if we reference both the early reporting that makes clear there are multiple individuals, and the recent reporting written from a naive acceptance that there is just a single individual, our coverage of can stop far short of accepting there is just a single individual.

As I stated on Talk:Abdul Rauf (Taliban governor) I would like input from other contributors on how to coverthese multiple individuals, and provide coverage of both the early reporting and later reporting, in a way that does not lapse from compliance with WP:No original research.

Since you looked at both articles, can I ask if you have enough further interest to look at the early reporting that I think makes clear there are multiple individuals, and offer your input as to how to cover these individuals without lapsing from compliance with NOR? Geo Swan (talk) 17:21, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

I have replied at Talk:Abdul Rauf (Taliban governor). --MelanieN (talk) 18:40, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

DYK for Ika Hügel-Marshall

Thank you fro me and the wiki Victuallers (talk) 00:02, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Of all the AfD saves you've had a hand in, I think this one is one of the best, not only helping to source the article and show notability, but to suggest feedback, add better hooks for the DYK, and finally to go out and get a hard copy of the autobiography to fill in the missing details. Anyone who sources from "dead trees" is a dedicated Wikipedian and deserves praise. After its run today (when people have seen it and had a chance to copyedit it), I reckon you could put it for a GA review. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:25, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
You were the one who saved it from AfD; I came along later. I didn't realize, or had forgotten (until I looked at the history just now), what a big involvement Drmies had in improving that article, even before the DYK nom. It was really a three-person job. Yes, I think it is pretty much ready for GA even now. It is maybe a little bit over-referenced, but that's not a bad thing. (Oops, I just realized - the book was due back at the library yesterday. That's gonna cost me 25 cents.) --MelanieN (talk) 16:31, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
P.S. Wow, here's something I didn't realize until just now - that article was created by a sockpuppet of a blocked user.[3] That's how close we came to not having an article about this woman. --MelanieN (talk) 16:34, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
The other article created by that sock was Black Deutschland. It needs some work. Shall we tackle it next? --MelanieN (talk) 16:37, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
I'll see what I can uncover, but I just promised to beef up H to He, Who Am the Only One which I have a very good "dead tree" source for, though if I get time over the weekend I will look into it. There are a few news sources here and as a native German speaker, @Gerda Arendt: may be able to decipher some of these. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:31, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
She's also featured - for a little longer - on Portal:Germany. If you have more DYK related to Germany feel free to add it there yourself. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:43, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
If we get this one to GA, will it be featured at the portal again? --MelanieN (talk) 17:12, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
I take care only of the DYK section ;) - Will look at sources if you ping me again, not now, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:28, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

I was wondering if you could act as a tie-breaker of sorts here. I nominated for GA, but now sourced content has been removed and unsourced content added; it now meets quick-fail criteria for no longer being stable. Hoping to find someone to help us work things out before a GA reviewer comes by. I have a disclosed COI and the other editor shows editing patterns consistent with a non-disclosed COI. Dunno, He's said 29 one place and 30 another. I get a bit confused around him... I know quite a few musicians that ought to be notable but aren't - and I think he's another. Mostly a hell of a lot better than the ones making all the money. Like a girl I know - I watched her in a rehearsal playing a tenor horn from a French horn part (sight transposing) with one hand, and running a finger of her other hand along the music of the girl next to her who wasn't as experienced and who was getting lost. Or the guitarist who could back me in improvisations when I didn't even know what key I was in until the last couple of bars. They're the real musicians - not the seemingly cloned k-pop and j-pop groups put together by big companies. Peridon (talk) 21:48, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

snowcones! yum!

Can I get a quick favour? I've been rescuing articles from AfD again (yeah, shocking isn't it) and @Davey2010: has very kindly closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nobo Ice Cream as "snow keep". Obviously, I want the article kept and believe my efforts have saved it, but three votes inside 24 hours is a little too quick in my view to do a non admin close. Could you just have a quick look over it and give a second opinion on the close? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:22, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip. You are absolutely right. I left him a (hopefully gentle) note suggesting that he re-open the discussion. This closure violated both WP:NAC and WP:Speedy keep. I have no doubt the ultimate result will be keep, but this was not a situation that called for IAR. Thanks for the sundae, I'll have it for breakfast. And I'll take a look at the article although I suspect you didn't leave much for me to do. --MelanieN (talk) 15:46, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

P.S. That's not a snow cone. THIS is a snow cone. (Called "shave ice" in Hawaii.)
Of course, the real, real, real reason for me wanting a speedy close is so I can write the DYK within the 7 day limit (probably something about the name being Irish for "no cow" or having avocado as a substitute for dairy products), but I cannot in good conscience do that unless the AfD is closed fair and square. As for the article, the list of flavours and sizes needs a better source, and the Dublin CC and Irish Independent sources could be mined far more for information. And of course there is no free image of a tub of the ice cream, though as it doesn't seem to be on general retail outside of Ireland - hence the confusion and AfD - I suspect somebody who lives there will need to that. Plenty of non-free images of the stuff, though. Anyway, enjoy the Sundae, honestly, those Californians, always bragging about how big their stuff is. (Mind you, I suppose you think the same about Texans). Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:01, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
You probably could still get that speedy close: just ask User:DGG if he would consider withdrawing the nomination, based on improvements to the article. Then Davey could close it with Wikipedia's blessing! 0;-D Re: the picture, it wasn't about the size. (Although come to think of it that comment did have echoes of "You call that a knife? That's not a knife. THIS is a knife.") It's just that they are completely different things. Your picture shows a sundae: ice cream in a dish, with toppings, eaten with a spoon. A snow cone is a paper or plastic cone, filled with crushed ice and topped with a flavored syrup, and slurped through a straw. Picky, picky! Anyhow both are delicious. --MelanieN (talk) 16:26, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
I've pinged DGG elsewhere at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Polycount, voting "keep" and questioning the uncharacteristically weak nomination - I'm not saying an AfD wasn't justified, maybe it was, but it seems to have been done in haste with one foot out of the door (mind you, I've been there and done that when I've expanded articles leaving a "somebody copyedit this please"). Nobó has already been speedy deleted twice, once inside an AfD (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nobo Dairy-free Ice Cream), so it's easy to assume a brand new editor creating it yet again is going to be more of the same. It looks like a paid editor has tried to get this up without grasping proper article policy. Anyway, the article is not going to go anywhere in the next few days and I think said paid editor has probably been and gone by now. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:54, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
Oh, and re the snow cone, I was lazy and just put up the first vaguely on-topic picture I could find and made a lame joke. It's the Ritchie333 way. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 18:40, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for having my back, Peridon. I have come close to doing this more than once. I don't suppose there is any magic script that does it all for us??? --MelanieN (talk) 15:07, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
None that I know. Just the patrollers - sometimes after a few weeks, even. (Not ones of mine - admins with more experience also forget...) Peridon (talk) 15:17, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
I have an AfD close script in one of my .js pages - it obviously does not let me delete pages, but presumably since the option is there it would work for admins. ansh666 21:34, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

Link

Mentioned it, but forgot to give you the link - WP:NOINDEX gives two ways of doing it. Peridon (talk) 14:11, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

And thanks again. Very interesting. I love the fact that the commands are called "Magic words". Who said tech folks don't have a sense of humor? --MelanieN (talk) 15:13, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
I've got them stirred up at VP/T at the moment, about unblock requests (but probably any other template) and = signs. I expected a slightly snarky reply, but they're having fun working out why it does what it does. Could be useful to look at - it took me a bit to work out how to get round it when I first encountered it. Peridon (talk) 15:20, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
Way over my head technically, but psychologically you asked a good question that nobody has answered: WHY in the world do they do this? --MelanieN (talk) 15:29, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
Possible answer: they're the same person socking. A couple more questions I have are, one, why do people post 'Contested deletion' on the talk page, and then repost the article, and two, why do others copy the speedy notification from their talk page to the article talk page? It's not just one or two. I've seen loads over my time with the mop. Anyway, I just thought I'd ask about the = signs. The get around of using the page edit button instead of the nearest section edit is dead easy (do remember to eliminate the =s), but I was curious about why it happened. Took me ages first time I found one, and then didn't see one for a few weeks and forgot it... Peridon (talk) 15:57, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
Thank you so much for your kind words on your review of my dual Zephyrette DYK nomination. (Not to mention the review itself; I know I gave you quite a lot to review, and I really appreciate the time and effort you put into it!) Someday, I'd love to go for a GA nomination, and if you really think that one of these might be worthy than I might just go for it! Also, I always try to review twice as many DYKs as I nominate in order to help reduce the backlog and compensate for newcomers who don't (have to) review. Thanks again for your review, and it is always a pleasure to interact with a Wikipedian as thoughtful and considerate as you. Take care! Michael Barera (talk) 03:22, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
@Michael Barera: You're welcome, Michael. I'm always happy to see such polished and well-researched articles being added to the encyclopedia. I am not a GA reviewer myself, but if you like I'll ask an experienced GA reviewer to look at these articles and advise what would need to be done to get them to GA level. --MelanieN (talk) 14:52, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

A presentation

I have proposed a proposal to make Wikipedia free of data charges for users from developing countries, I will be glad if you can sign up here (just to ensure that you are also interested in making Wikipedia free of data charges), signing up doesn't mean that you have to attend so don't worry. Thank you, friend. Jim Carter 13:41, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

La Loca

Hello Melanie: I realise that I probably shouldn't have gone in and made changes directly to the article on one of your talk pages. I think I confused it with the "Articles for Consideration" page....

Anyway, I'd just point out that, on opera articles, we use Act 1, Act 2, rather than Act I, Act II, etc.

I'm afraid that my reference sources include nothing on La Loca; even Grove's Dictionary only contains a one-line mention of the opera. If I come across anything useful, I'll let you know. Anyway, keep up the good work, and I hope we'll see you are WP:OPERA for a long time. Best, Viva-Verdi (talk) 15:10, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

@Viva-Verdi: Don't apologize; I had actually invited people to come to the draft and make changes, and several of them did. I appreciated yours, and I will fix the Act 1 thing. Yes, La Loca seems to have been a, shall we say, underappreciated opera. Aside from its premieres in San Diego and New York, and the two performances of the reworked version at Menotti's own festivals, I think it pretty much sank like a stone. Which it didn't deserve. I actually saw this opera at its San Diego premiere, and I thought it was good, both musically and dramatically. Better than many that have remained in the repertoire. I'm afraid not many other people will ever have the chance to make that evaluation; that's too bad. Anyhow thanks for your help. --MelanieN (talk) 16:12, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Thank you

You gave me some incredible advice on not just creating an article, but sandboxing it first. THANK YOU!! Team 77 (talk) 07:11, 26 February 2015 (UTC)Team 77
