Ways to improve Francesco Barbavara II edit

Hello, MarkRKnowles,

Thank you for creating Francesco Barbavara II.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

This really needs to have WP:INLINE references. At the moment it is very difficult to follow. I have some concerns that the material may be copied from other works. Can you verify that the wording used is yours and yours alone?

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Insertcleverphrasehere}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

Delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

Getting Marcolino Barbavara page approved edit

I am gradually improving the pages I am working on, but I notice the page on Marcolino Barbavara has not yet been approved. MarkRKnowles (talk) 16:53, 9 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi I’m just reviewing this article. You haven’t added any sources at all. Do you know how to add them? Mccapra (talk) 21:09, 9 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

I am learning and trying to gradually improve the articles. MarkRKnowles (talk) 22:03, 9 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

ok that’s good. You really shouldn’t put articles into mainspace without sources, or they’re likely to get deleted. If you need help formatting the refs let me know. Mccapra (talk) 22:16, 9 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Francesco Barbavara moved to draftspace edit

An article you recently created, Francesco Barbavara, does not have sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Speedy deletion nomination of Francesco Barbavara II edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Francesco Barbavara II requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from http://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/francesco-barbavara_res-2c678929-87e7-11dc-8e9d-0016357eee51_(Dizionario-Biografico)/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Explanation of ongoing problems edit

@MarkRKnowles, DGG, and Ingratis:

Mark: it would appear that you have used machine translation (perhaps Google Translate) in the articles Francesco Barbavara II, Marcolino Barbavara and other Wikipedia pages. While it may not seem a copyright violation, it is. You are stealing their intellectual property and passing it off as your own.

Ingratis: While the copyright status the Enciclopedia Treccani may be contested, the website claims "Treccani © All rights Reserved", it would appear to me that the precautionary principle should be applied here

Hi Mark if it's helpful here, I've used the same site a lot as a source for many articles I've created. I have used a google translation as part of the basis for those articles, but I've also drawn on other sources and put the material together in a way that attributes the material properly and does not rely on a single source. The site is very useful and you can definitely use it for creating future articles, just not as a straight copy. As a rule of thumb, avoid relying on single source for more than a couple of sentences, and avoid using the same or similar wording as far as you can. You will need a citation at the end of most sentences to build a really solid article. Let me know on my talk page if you need help. Mccapra (talk) 10:40, 10 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
I've given some thought about this, and I think when I when I wrote "You are stealing their intellectual property and passing it off as your own" was not the kind of comment that would be expected of an Administrator. I think a better analogy would be:
Luigi Pirandello writes play in Italian
I translate that play into English... and then claim I wrote the play
No, Pirandello wrote the play. You have just translated the play into into English
Your thoughts abour this?

I am not interested in promoting anything in wikipedia as my own. I am researching the court of Filippo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan. My own personal research focuses around the Barbavara family and their role in his court, but also the other major figures of that court. One of the best sources on the figures in the court is Treccani, unfortunately this is in Italian, though google happily will translate it, but the translation needs to be improve through manual editing. I do have other sources on these people, but Treccani is a good foundation. Unlike wikipedia, Treccani does not have a facility for linking [[ ]] names and places, so that one can easily jump between articles, which is a great advantage of having articles on wikipedia. Also one cannot edit or improve the article on Treccani, so there are advantages to having biographies of these figures on wikipedia. I would be happy to rewrite the information provided on treccani. MarkRKnowles (talk) 17:03, 11 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

if you want to cite books, this link is very useful. If you find a useful google book just load the link at the top and hit ‘make citation’ at the bottom and it auto generates a ref for you in wiki format. Mccapra (talk) 17:09, 11 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
