Coptic Flag Edits edit

Hey, about the edits at the Coptic Flag page. Don't you think that if we are saying Arabization, manifested in the Egyptian pan-Arab flag, is the reason for alienation of Egyptian Coptic Christians, we should mention that Christians of other non-Arab ethnicities were, in the first place, the ones who formalized pan-Arabism. Seems related, especially that further down in the article we talk about other ethnicities within "Arab countries" who have their own flags. Tamer (talk) 23:45, 2 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Dear Lanternix, I'm a new wiki user and I'm really interested in the administrative boundaries of Egypt. I'm an italian student and I need the updated shapefile of the governorates of Egypt for a reasearch. I have a map, which doesn't include the last two governorates created in April 2008: Helwan and 6th of October. I would be very grateful if you could provide me with the data (my email address: mico_mao@hotmail.com) , in case you have.. Many many many thanks in advance!!! cheers Mico

Religion at Arab edit

I noticed you strongly interjected that "Copts and Maronites ARE not Arabs". I agree with you that most Copts and at least today most Maronites would not identify with an Arab identity. However, both ARE Arabized people. But the issue is not about WHO IS or WHO ISN'T an Arab, because there is no one single definition, and there will always be controversy.

At least on one level, I'm sure you cannot deny that an Egyptian Copt is no less or no more Arabized than an Egyptian Muslim, or a Lebanese Maronite is no less or no more Arabized than a Lebanese Muslim. That more Egyptian Copts and Lebanese Maronites don't identify as Arab compared to Egyptian Muslims and Lebanese Muslims is another thing, because on an ancestral level neither Egyptian Copts nor Egyptian Muslims are Arabs. They are the one and same people. The same is true of the Lebanese Maronites and Lebanese Muslims. You must also know that Lebanese Maronites were among the earliest and most prominent Pan-Arabists. Egyptians as a whole on the other hand, whether Muslims or Copt, were never Arabists as such, and the Arab identity in Egypt was thrust upon the country as state policy. Independent of this, Egyptians as a whole have been an Arabized people for quite some time.

If we are going to address the issue of religious observance of "Arabs" we have to acknowledge that one of the many definitions of "Arab" includes Arabized peoples. And in this respect, yes, Coptic Christianity and Maronite Christianity are among the many religions adhered to by "Arabs", in this case in the sense of Arabized peoples. For if they are not religions that are found among "Arabs", then neither is Islam. Most muslims, in effect, are not Arabs, but South and East Asians. Islamization is not a factor in Arabization. So while Copts need not be "Arabs" or identify as Arabs (as is the case for most of them, but also true for many Egyptian Muslims), "Arabs" may in fact include people who are Copts. It is on this premise that Coptic Christianity and Maronite Christianity were included. Al-Andalus 12:22, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Al-Andalus, you sound like a reasonable person but for some reason you included Egyptians in the infobox of that article even though this is a very controversial view for the Egyptian people. The previous version is more neutral. What does Arabized peoples mean, is it language? Are Egyptians who speak only English or French as a mother tongue English and French? No, of course not. Culture? No, Egyptians have a completely different culture from the countries in the Arabian peninsula.
Lanternix, it's time to archive your talk page man, it's getting harder to load. Let me know if you don't know how to do it. :) Egyegy 23:51, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello edit

Hey my Egyptian mate, I am a Christian Iraqi wikpedian majorly based at Arabic Wikipedia, and was wondering if you can help us get Arabic wikipedia growing faster that it is now, especially on articles that interest u (Copts, Egypt, and Saints, maybe more ?). I myself am a sysop on Arabic wikipedia, and the reason why I am asking is because of your proficiency in many languages which will prove to be an important asset should you decide to "translate" articles to Arabic rather that compose them from scratch.

Let me know on my AR WP talk page here.

The Egyptian identity section just saw it! edit

If the Egyptians wanted to be known as a distant group. They have to mention the Arabs (ashraaf and Bedouins 30% of Egypt roughly 25 Million) and the Egyptians 70% roughly 55 Million the majority. And Arabic language as the official language. Masri Dialect? if you want to call Masri a language then their are 300 Arabic languages. I can see why they are not allowing you reverts, because you are doing the same thing to the Arabs in Egypt! Its a known fact that 30% of Egypt are Ahraaf (or claim to be Ashraaf) thats Arabs or self identified Arabs. If you dont recognize them. How do you expect Arabs to recognize the whole Egyptian identity that you are working against by including the Arabs in it?. Egyptian Arabic is not a language, you should revive your old language instead of claiming Arabic as Masri! You can't have it both ways, either go Egyptian all the way or not.

  • AbdulHalim Hafez is Arab, his songs are done in beautiful Arabic. You are hurtiung your cause by including writers, singers who spoke and identified as Arabs. You have to fix The Egyptian article and include the Arab big minority and the Arabic language (so people dont get confused when they read the population 77Million and see it again in Arab! automatically they will think..oh Egyptian Arab) You cant convince the Ashraaf that they are Egyptians. They look down at Egypts past and they identify or (claim an Arab identity) which makes them Arab.
  • 70 % of 80 is about 55Million thats the population of Egyptians other wise you are just agreeing with the Arab article that includes all Egyptians as Arabs!--Skatewalk 23:41, 16 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:AlexMap2.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 10:17, 21 August 2007 (UTC). Fix the Egypt identity section! edit

  • So I can look at something, ad eferences. You have to do the research work on the Arab minority (that you define as invaders). Then if ts relevant we can add it.
  • You don't see the big flaw in the Egyptians page!? Its simply (Egyptian Arabs).
  • The claim that Egypt is dominated by 1% Bedouins living in the desert is more insulting than anything else! You have to mention the Ashraaf Islamic influence if you want the article to gain credibility. Once you identify the Ashraaf as the invaders (logical 30% dominating minority).
  • If you dont agree with me! please explain to me how 1-2% Bedouins herding camels in the desert are imposing the Arab republic, language, religion upon the Egyptians!. You see what I mean!--Skatewalk 22:36, 23 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Its your article, you already know whats missing. (the settlers/wafideen or "invaders" if thats what you prefer) should be mentioned (the bedouins of Sinai are not from Hijaz, most are from Nejd and some are ancient Semites)--Skatewalk 17:38, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

You're the one complaining not I. When you identify the reasons behind your comlaints I may consider taking a look at the article. --Lanternix 14:30, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

The Arab article edit

  • You will not find a good reference for the Copts because of the political situation, so I will make sure it stays in the article. (please dont quote POV/blogs) it only makes it look like a shaky claim, we removed alot of references/sources that didn't have ISBN or were POV/blog[1].
  • If someone asks on a citation on why the copts are not Arabs, then I will add a historic reference of the Arabs referring to the Copts as a seperate group. As of now its not needed because nobody is asking for a citatation and its accepted.--Skatewalk 17:38, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
You're making stuff up. None of the sources about Copts/Egypitians were blogs, they are news articles, one Arab nationalist site which admits that Egyptians are not Arabs, and a link to the Egypt article where a ton more references are available. Please don't delete them again, it's considered vandalism. Egyegy 19:05, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Egyegy,

  • The references are weak because as you said, ne from a nationalist website! and the second is a blog!. User Tiamut listed the bad references on the talk page and we agreed on removing the POV/blogs and unverified references. However,I didn't delete the facts that copts are not Arabs, so I am not sure why you are still reverting? unless you want to keep the article in constant vadalizing state and make readers think that copts are (maybe Arab or maybe not) instead of leaving it as it is (clearly not Arabs)--Skatewalk 03:46, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Coptic Bible edit

Hi, Lanternix.

I notice that there's no article for the Coptic Bible, and yet there's an article called Coptic versions of the Bible. Should we start a new article, redirect, or move the only available article to the non-existent page?

Also, on my 3rd Sandbox, I have used the New Athena Unicode font to decode the Coptic alphabet that's available in unicode (using that, you make words have overline or use Coptic numbers, etc.). However, the best way to type in Coptic using unicode without installing anything other than the font is:

  1. Go to accessories
  2. System tools
  3. Character Map
  4. Go to the "New Athena Unicode" font
  5. Check off "advanced view"
  6. Go to "group by" and click "Unicode subrange"
  7. Click "Greek" (it's the closest thing to Coptic)

I have discovered that, by using this method, you can even use the seven "Coptic" (demotic) letters even as it is in the Greek group alphabet within this font. (Pretty sneaky, isn't it?)

One more thing. I have found a verse that's entirely in Sahidic Coptic text and can included in the aforementioned article. It was in this link.

Here's the English text:

These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. (Jn 1:28)

...And here's the Coptic (it was already using unicode as I found it):

ⲚⲀⲒ ⲀⲨϢⲰⲠⲈ ϨⲚ ⲂⲎⲐⲀⲢⲀⲂⲀ ⲘⲠⲒⲔⲢⲞ ⲘⲠⲒⲞⲢⲆⲀⲚⲎⲤ ⲘⲠⲘⲀ ⲈⲚⲈⲢⲈ ⲒⲰϨⲀⲚⲚⲎⲤ ⲂⲀⲠⲦⲒⲌⲈ ⲚϨⲎⲦϤ. (Jn 1:28)

If you can help with anything relating to this or other Coptic texts on Wikipedia, that would be highly apprectiated.

Ⲛⲁⲛⲉ ⲣⲟⲩϩⲓ, Lanternix. First of all, I have responded as well on Talk:Copt, and as long as we try to cooperate, things should go smoothly enough.
Anyway, I have a better way for the Coptic font. The first one I told you was only for the Demotic Coptic letters.
  1. Go add this website to your favourites.
  2. Type in "New Athena Unicode" in the "Font Name" box, and click the refresh button.
  3. For the letters borrowed from Greek in the Coptic-style, go to the "2CFF" subrange.
  4. Open a new window/tab and follow steps 1-2.
  5. Go to the "03FF" subrange for the Demotic Coptic letters.
As for the Coptic Bible, may be that was a bad question. We could probably redirect to the current article and also add links to and from Coptic literature.
I have worked on the original Coptic New Testament in the New Athena Unicode font, and I've done 1/3 of the Book of Mark in Coptic. The experiment can be found here. You can help me number the verses using the correct templates if you're interested. Ⲟⲩϫⲁⲓ, ~ Troy (talk) 00:27, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
So, just to clarify, we should just make a redirect, right? Also, I've got several experiments in the Coptic language on my sandboxes linked from my user page (the Coptic Gospel of Matthew, II Maccabees, the Holy Psalmody {ten thino}, and the Coptic Orthodox Lord's Prayer). Image source problem with Image:LuxorMap.jpg edit

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:LuxorMap.jpg.

Image source problem with Image:Qusiya.jpg edit

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Qusiya.jpg.

Image source problem with Image:Mallawi.jpg edit

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Mallawi.jpg.

Your uploads edit

Good day. I see that you have uploaded a number of images to Wikipedia. First off, thank you for your contributions. Unfortunately, there are some guidelines that we need to follow with copyrighted images. Specifically, you need to add a source for the image (a link to a website will do), a copyright tag (there are some listed at WP:ICT), and a rationale explaining why we can use a copyrighted image (explained at WP:NFURG). I see that your images fail to include one of these. Please stop uploading images and address the concerns listed above. If you need assistance, you can ask at the help desk. If you do not fix these images, and you continue to make bad uploads, you will be blocked and your images will be deleted. Thanks for your contributions! article edit

hey, the Arab Christians article is an all-encompassing article regardless of the enthnicity of the indigenous Christians of the Arab world; because your edit is highly subjective, other Egyptian Copts wether from Arab enthnicty (DNA) or not view themselves as Arabs; now the fact that you don't view yourself as an Arab that is your personal belief. Many from the same religious background as yourself don't agree with your beleief. this article is pretty contentious...but there's already the copt article, which elaberates more on this subject.George Al-Shami (talk) 18:08, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

hey laternix, no I don't need references I know what the Copt religous authority think, however that article does not mention that Arab Christians are those who view themselves as Arab, the term Arab is very contentious itself and depends on what school of thought you belong to. There are those who call people by the language they speak, but some people obviously have issues with that. But the point is that Wikipedia is a plave where all scholarly viewpoints are placed, so your removal of egypt is not neutral because it erroneously assumes that all Copts reject the name "Arab", which you yourself have admitted is not true. Instead of removing the refernce to Egypt, why don't you write in the egypt section of the article, the coptic church's viewpoint about the "Arab" label?George Al-Shami (talk) 02:01, 24 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Modern Coptic Art edit

Dear, Lanternix. I've receantly have visited Egypt where I was lucky to get acquanted with a coptic artist, who had ageed to make a picture for me using some elements of traditional coptic art. [Here it is http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Изображение:Coptic_picture.JPG]. Do you think, it can be used in Wikipedia as an example of modern coptic art?--paralingua (talk) 11:43, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Request to move article Saint Menas incomplete edit

You recently filed a request at Wikipedia:Requested moves to move the page Saint Menas to a different title - however your proposal is either incomplete or has been contested as being controversial. As a result, it has been moved to the incomplete and contested proposals section. Requests that remain incomplete after five days will be removed.

Please make sure you have completed all three of the following:

  1. Added {{move|NewName}} at the top of the talk page of the page you want moved, replacing "NewName" with the new name for the article. This creates the required template for you there.
  2. Added a place for discussion at the bottom of the talk page of the page you want to be moved. This can easily be accomplished by adding {{subst:RMtalk|NewName|reason for move}} to the bottom of the page, which will automatically create a discussion section there.
  3. Added {{subst:RMlink|PageName|NewName|reason for move}} to the top of today's section here.

If you need any further guidance, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Requested moves or contact me on my talk page. - JPG-GR (talk) 01:36, 9 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Muslim invasion of Egypt edit

Hello Lanternix! I would like to move the article Muslim conquest of Egypt to Muslim invasion of Egypt. I believe this is a more neutral title, and it's in accordance with the names of other articles concerning the history of Egypt, such as French invasion of Egypt, Byzantine alliance and invasion of Egypt, French Invasion of Egypt (1798), Crusader invasions of Egypt etc. What do you think? --Bomba999 (talk) 04:29, 14 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello! I reverted your moves, primarily because "invasion" implies a non-permanent result, while "conquest" is what actually happened, i.e. the Muslims conquered these areas from the Byzantines. Regards, Constantine 10:01, 9 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hm, I should have phrased it better: an invasion may or may not be successful, while the term "conquest" denotes a successful invasion, i.e. that the invader established control over the invaded country. For example, the Persian invasion of Greece or the French invasion of Egypt failed, while the Norman invasion of England succeeded, which is why it is most often known as the "Norman Conquest". It is the same story with the Muslim conquests. There is no discernible reason to change the old-established "conquest" for "invasion". "Conquest" is more accurate and concise, as it also informs the reader about the result, and I don't really see anything NPOV or offensive about it... In a more specific context, when one speaks of the "Muslim Conquest(s)", one knows which period of world history is referred to, while "Muslim invasions" can mean any number of thing, from the raids into France or the Byz. Empire or India (a Google search ought to give you a clearer picture of this). Regards, Constantine 23:15, 9 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Muslim conquest of Egypt edit

hi, please check the discussion fourm of Muslim conquest of Egypt before reverting my edits. This is an encyclopedia and according to Wikipedia:Editing policy one should discuss before making any serious changes, earlier in April when you made these changes i gave a detail report in the discussion fourm, you may have never read it, so, read it first to avoid WP:EW which may result in your blocking from editing wikipedia. also check Wikipedia:Three-revert rule.

This edit [6] caught my eye as outside normal courtesy. If you use this kind of language against someone you will find you tend to generate more support for him than anything else. --BozMo talk 22:06, 30 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
However I see in fact that you were quoting back at FfQ on the "hateful" bit, which was probably the worst bit. --BozMo talk 22:09, 30 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Okay you win, we are all human and I make mistakes. Yes I agree your language was not as bad as FfG, but I wasn't reviewing the dispute just looking at your contribution (and him being worst doesn't mean you are right to say "pro-Arab POV" etc.. License tagging for File:2006 Cup of Nations in Cairo.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:2006 Cup of Nations in Cairo.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 02:06, 1 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

warning for edit warring edit

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Library of Alexandria. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing. Please do not repeatedly revert edits, but use the talk page to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. If necessary, pursue dispute resolution. --Akhilleus (talk) 01:32, 4 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Lanternix, you are mistaken about Wikipedia's definition of vandalism. To quote the policy: "Any good-faith effort to improve the encyclopedia, even if misguided or ill-considered, is not vandalism." Kauffner's edits, even if you disagree with them, are obviously part of an attempt to improve the encyclopedia. If you continue to call Kauffner's edits vandalism, that will not reflect well on you. As for the talk page, I'm glad to see that you're using it; what you need to do now is continue discussion with Kauffner, rather than edit warring with him. If you continue to disagree about what the article should say, pursue dispute resolution rather than edit warring. --Akhilleus (talk) 01:58, 4 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

honorifics edit

Hi Lanternix, the Manual of Style states that Wikipedia should not have honorifics in its narrative voice. I understand that you may feel strongly about this, but this is the standard practice and would appreciate not having to edit-war over it. Thanks, Nableezy (talk) 16:20, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

They actually dont, what you cited was in the name of a book. Take a look at Muhammad and see if there are any honorifics. Nableezy (talk) 16:29, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I am not exactly the most patient guy, but patience isnt really an Egyptian trait. Nableezy (talk) 16:36, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
not Egyptian? How do you figure? Nableezy (talk) 16:43, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
ahh, I see. That is actually a quote from Tariq Ali (who is also not a Palestinian) reflecting on a passage in a Shakespeare play. Just a quote I like. If you look at my userboxes you will see I am indeed an Egyptian. Nableezy (talk) 16:47, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Nope, an Egyptian. Both parents trace back their lines in Egypt, my father fought in 73 and much of my family is still there. Those edits were mostly minor, I did some work on the templates and needed to fix the articles that those templates were on. But never have lived in Egypt, my parents came to the US and I have lived my life here, but have spent much time there with family. Really, how many non-Egyptians would identify this as their favorite place in Egypt? Nableezy (talk) 17:06, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Whatever, you dont want to believe me I dont really care, your perception of what I am doesnt affect me. Bye, Nableezy (talk) 17:49, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
