Military history WikiProject World War I Op-Ed Series
editThe Teamwork Barnstar | ||
In recognition of the role you played in cleaning up my God-awful spelling and grammar in the World War I Op-Ed series published by the Military history WikiProject's newsletter The Bugle over the last four years, I hereby present you with this teamwork barnstar. It is thanks to so many different editors like you who took the time to copyedit the nearly four year long series that it ended up being as successful as it was, and I am grateful for your help since spelling and grammar are not my strongest suites. Yours sincerely, TomStar81 (Talk) 14:35, 2 December 2018 (UTC) |

Your email
editYou sent me an email about HMS Cattistock? I don't have access to the email account anymore so could you ask me the question here or on my talk page?Nigel Ish (talk) 18:15, 7 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Nigel Ish: I noticed that you have English's book on Hunt-class destroyers, and I would like to expand that article, which I created years ago as a stub. Since English isn't easy to get access to on this side of the Atlantic, would it be possible for you to send scans of the entry for Cattistock in English's book? Thanks, Kges1901 (talk) 18:44, 7 December 2018 (UTC)
- I'm sorry but no - as I've stated on the WP:MilHistory talk page, I'm done with Military History topics here. I'm not prepared to waste time in a field where certain editors are prepared to drive anyone who disagrees with them off the project.Nigel Ish (talk) 19:37, 9 December 2018 (UTC)

A certain disruptive user with no USSR/CIS knowledge
editI'm really close to leaving Wikipedia because of this disruptive editor -thewolfchild. Can you please back me up in support of having the plainlist? I linked to ~100 photographs of Meklin, and she wears ribbon racks in exactly zero of them, including photos taken long after the war. (Plus I did not include russian-language videos where she was speaking, not wearing ribbons) It is incredibly obnoxiuos that someone with clearly little or no knowledge of the topic is getting in the way of article development - wolf ended up removing important information like her native name, mission numbers, and punctuation in his/her rush to revert my edits. Even another user expressed support for having the plainlist since it is a comprimise between fighting between different icon formatting. I want to including infomation about Meklin's media apperances in the article, like that she was featured on the cover of Smena in 1943, in KP when she was declared a hero, and in Ogoniok, and in a documentary interview, but I had to request it to be locked to prevent wolf from messing it up. Now wolf is outraged that I switched ribbonracks in the infobox to plainlists and got really angry...can you please give me some backup here? I want to [these articles], but I do not want to deal with such a person on a regular basis. I even recruited a new person to Wikipedia to translate articles from Russian to English and Uzbek, but I'm very worried wolf is going to bite this newbie. (I'll tell you more about this newbie in an email...I really don't want wolf to "bite" them just to spite me. This person has lots of knowledge about world history in all kinds of CIS topics, from biography to architecture. They will be very valuable to the project.) Thank you for you support, --PlanespotterA320 (talk) 21:24, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- You have done much productive work, as many editors have pointed out before, and I would caution you against giving up because of the actions of one user on one article. This dispute on the Meklin article is being inflated out of proportion. Don't worry about biting because wolf is not, to my knowledge, interested in Uzbek topics, which your new editor is interested in (and there are no ribbons there anyway). There's no problem with you switching ribbons to plainlists, though, and wolf seems to have reacted hastily there. Kges1901 (talk) 23:06, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- No other article on a night witch, member of a sister regiment (125th dive bomber or 568th Fighter), or from list of female heroes of the Soviet Union has the formatting wolf insists on having. I may be a little OCD, but changing such precedent is absolutely intolerable. I now realize what DR means, but do you really think it is best to bring in more editors who have little or no knowledge of the subject that are just seeking another quid-pro-quo vote for the next time they get into a dispute? Wolf didn't hesitate to ping many people at once, but I generally prefer to try not to bother people unless necessary. The new editor I emailed you about is not just interested in Uzbekistan topics but also most of Central Asia, Russia, the Caucuses, Eastern Europe too. But wolf doesn't seem to be hesitant to disrupt topics he is unfamiliar about.--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 02:18, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
- Because wolf is incredibly insistent (to say the least) for having ribbons in the mainspace, can you please just make a clear-cut comment on the talkpage for Natalya Meklin directly that supports the use of a plainlist without icons in the article? (Because talking to wolf is like talking to a wall).--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 16:01, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
- Turns out he is very hostile to many other users - can you join in at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents#Hostility_toward_other_editors_from_User:Thewolfchild --PlanespotterA320 (talk) 22:38, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018
editHello Kges1901/2018,
- Reviewer of the Year
This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.
- Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.
See also the list of top 100 reviewers.
- Less good news, and an appeal for some help
The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.
- Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019
At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.
- Training video
Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

We have these two embarassingly named 'XX SFTS BCATP' articles (Category:Royal Canadian Air Force Squadrons (BCATP)), both for training schools that were a part of 3 Training Command. Can you collect enough reliable sources to help me write an article on No. 3 Training Command, listing all the schools and formation/disbandment dates for all, so we can upmerge them? Buckshot06 (talk) 18:03, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
- Will do. Kges1901 (talk) 18:09, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
- Many thanks Kges. Can you recheck your sources please for No. 2 Air Navigation School RCAF? It's in New Brunswick, which is in the Maritimes, but your sources do not list it in 3 TC. The original article from the internet sources however does list it in 3 TC. Which TC was it in? Did it move? Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 09:39, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hatch lists it, but Kostenuk does not because it was closed before January 1944. Kges1901 (talk) 20:11, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
- Which TC does Hatch list it in? Would you mind amending the article for 2 ANS? Buckshot06 (talk) 13:43, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hatch doesn't list schools by TC, but it is a fair assumption that it was in No. 3 TC. I have already edited the article to reflect the info in Hatch. Kges1901 (talk) 13:50, 15 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. - Thanks for the 367th RD / 111 MRD article. Holm's data seems incomplete at the end; Andrew Duncan, drawing on CFE data circa 1998, reports it became 20 MRB before disbandment. Data and sources are all at the Leningrad Military District article. Buckshot06 (talk) 19:58, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
