Signatures edit

{{helpme}} I want to edit my signature, but I'm not sure of what kind of codes to use for things like colours. Could somebody show me what do do please?

Custom signatures

It's possible to customise your signature, and you can put 'code' in it to have different colours, etc. Pictures aren't allowed; hence, mine isn't an icon, it's just text characters with different colours.

You put the code in your preferences signature box, and checkmark the 'user raw signatures'; please note that it's fiddly, and easy to get it wrong, so it's best to test signing in a user sandbox area.

When using 'raw signatures' in your preferences, you need to manually include the links to your user and talk pages.

An example code is;

<small><span style="border:1px solid #0000ff;padding:1px;">[[User:Chzz|<b>Chzz</b>]] : [[User_talk:Chzz|<font style="color:#accC10;background:#0000fa;"> Chat </font>]] </span></small>

Which displays as Chzz :  Chat

Note that you should always include your name (or part of it), a link to your user page and talk page.

Perhaps the easiest way to learn more is simply to look at other peoples signatures, by editing the page they've signed on, and looking at the code. For an example page with several, ahem, interesting signatures, see the April 1st Request for signatureship.

Make sure things are OK before signing on any talk pages (particularly that the links to your own pages work). If it all goes horribly wrong, see Wikipedia:How to fix your signature.

For much more info on this, see Wikipedia:SIGNATURE#Customizing_your_signature.

If you need any help with it, ask here or talk to us live.

Album/Single covers edit

{{helpme}} How could I obtain a single/album cover that has not seen a physical release, that I can upload to Wikipedia? For example, is it possible to use covers from Amazon.co.uk?

Yes, it is, if you provide a valid fair-use rationale with your upload. Refer to Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline for details on what information needs to be included with your upload. On a side note, as you asked above about your signature, please make sure you sign your posts on all talk pages, even your own, using ~~~~. Regards SoWhy 17:20, 14 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Absent Elk edit

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Absent Elk, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Very minorly notable article. Joining a tour once does not make the band notable, and they have released no independent songs that did well.

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Proposed deletion of M.A.D. EP edit

The article M.A.D. EP has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Crystal balling, no third party sources or demonstration of notability.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Durova311 20:10, 5 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image (File:HotChipColours.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading File:HotChipColours.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 03:30, 30 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Unreleased Albums edit

{{helpme}} What are the conditions that have to be met for a to-be-released album to have its own article on Wikipedia? Are two singles and an announced track list enough? Keytar Shredder (talk) 23:11, 8 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

From WP:NALBUMS:
All articles on albums, singles or songs must meet the basic criteria at the notability guidelines, with significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject.
...
In a few special cases, an unreleased album may qualify for an advance article if there is sufficient verifiable and properly referenced information about it—for example, Guns 'n Roses' 2008 album Chinese Democracy had an article as early as 2004. However, this only applies to a very small number of exceptionally high-profile projects—generally, an album should not have an independent article until its title, track listing and release date have all been publicly confirmed by the artist or their record label.
If the album is by a notable band/artist, and the details described above can all be verified to reliable sources, then it should be OK to create the article. Just be wary of "Wikipedia is not a crystal ball".
I hope that explains everything, but if you need further help feel free to:
  • Leave a message on my talk page; or
  • Use another {{helpme}} here; or
  • Talk to us live, with this.

Single Covers edit

{{helpme}} If a single has more than one cover (for example, many Muse singles, should they all be included on the article? Keytar Shredder (talk) 12:51, 29 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

That's not a question that can be definitively answered in the hypothetical as a yes or no. It would be reasonable to mention covers by notable bands citing to reliable sources which verify the covering and that can be done in one prose sentence. See. e.g., the article I wrote on Draggin' the Line. It would be unreasonable to mention covers by unknown garage bands, and it might be indiscriminate and unbalanced to mention every cover even by notable artists if there are huge numbers of them. What kind of depth is a second issue. If you go beyond mention and into who did it, what album they did it on, when they released it, what they were thinking, and more, it may reach a point of undue weight, but if you do what you should be doing anyway, which is stick with what you can source, your options become much more clear because you know the total information available to work from. Again, very hard to answer this in the hypothetical.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:37, 29 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh, sorry, I just realised I wasn't very clear in my question. What I meant was the actual front cover of the single, the CD or 7" cover. But thank you for taking your time to answer this anyway, this information will certainly be helpful in the future. Keytar Shredder (talk) 13:40, 29 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Aha! Okay. I think what we're ultimately talking about is fair use of other covers. You may not have meant the question this way—you may be talking about whether structurally it would be good—but most single covers are not in the public domain and are not at the Commons so you must deal with the fair use issue before you can even reach a structural issue. I do not think it would be fair use to show the single cover of other bands covering the single and certainly not of many. However, you may wish to check with experts on this at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. or place back the helpme and seek a second opinion.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:54, 29 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Help? edit

{{helpme}} Does a previous account I had a while before this one count as a sockpuppet? It has been inactive for a long time now, and I just remembered about it, I was just wondering if this was classed as sockpuppetry. I'm not sure whether sockpuppetry is when a user has more than one account, or whether a user has more than one active acount. Thanks. Keytar Shredder (talk) 12:48, 18 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

So long as you don't use the old account again, then you're fine. WP:SOCK#LEGIT states: "Clean start under a new name: If you decide to make a fresh start, and do not wish to be connected to a previous account, you can simply discontinue using the old account(s), and create a new one that becomes the only account you use. This is permitted only if there are no bans or blocks in place against your old account, and so long as no active deception is involved, particularly on pages that the old account used to edit." (I recommend reading the rest of that section of policy, just to familiarize yourself with it, WP:SOCK#LEGIT). Let me know if you have any further questions on the matter. Speedy deletion nomination of Absent Elk edit

A tag has been placed on Absent Elk requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. ttonyb (talk) 10:36, 8 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

AfD nomination of ITunes Live: London '08 (Hadouken! EP) edit

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is ITunes Live: London '08 (Hadouken! EP). We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/ITunes Live: London '08 (Hadouken! EP). Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:04, 10 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Spark (Assemblage 23 song) edit

The article Spark (Assemblage 23 song) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No references, no claim of notability, fails WP:NSONG and WP:GNG.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
