Scottish National Antarctic Expedition edit

Has any consensus been achieved with regard to the phrasing of the description in the penguin image? The discussion on the talk page seems to indicate that the humourous version is acceptable, and even welcome. Thanks! Shobhit102 | talk  16:04, 2 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

There's no consensus for that. Quite the opposite. Jonathunder (talk) 16:07, 2 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:JohnAllin.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:JohnAllin.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:29, 3 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Fort Jefferson cross photo edit

You really think that is a better photo? BrineStans (talk) 00:52, 2 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

For the geography section, one would expect it to show at least some of the landscape The one I added shows the rolling hills, the type of trees, the river proximate to the county seat, so it has more educational value for that particular article and in that sense is better. Yours does show the cross and the sky and might be better in an article on that monument. Jonathunder (talk) 00:58, 2 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

How to delete my current page edit

Hello, I would like to delete my Wikipedia page Thomas Dellert Dellacroix. The information provided is incorrect. I tried editing my page but the changes were reverted. The person who created my page, my ex assistant was fired, and we are not on talking terms... How do you advise me to accomplished deletion and create a new page ....? — Preceding unsigned comment added by TommyD2019 (talkcontribs) 00:31, 16 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

I don't know why you've asked me, as it doesn't look like I've ever edited that page or interacted with you before. However, that means I'm a neutral administrator and I'm willing to help. First, please don't edit the article yourself as you claim to be the subject. (See Wikipedia:Autobiography.) I'd encourage you to start a new section on the talk page stating what is inaccurate and pointing editors to third-party sources for the changes you would like to see. If you don't think you are a notable person and Wikipedia should not have any article about you, I could help you nominate it for deletion, but there is no guarantee it will be. I just made the page for G Fuel, is it good enough? edit

Hey again. I rarely (actually never) make articles outside my knowledge accept today. G Fuel is giant energy drink company that millions of people have seen. I desided to make the page for it as it was not there and I don't really know if I am doing this right. I have linked wherever it was black text and hopefully someone else will pick off where I left off. I am really proud of what I have got going on so take look around. Mia Art+Feminism edit-a-thon edit

Mia Art+Feminism Edit-a-Thon

Hello Jonathunder. You are invited to attend an Art+Feminism edit-a-thon at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) on Saturday, March 9, 2019 from noon to 4pm. Art+Feminism is an international campaign where people come together to improve coverage of women and the arts on Wikipedia. During the edit-a-thon we will be updating and creating Wikipedia articles on subjects related to gender, art, and feminism, with a focus on artists represented in Mia's collection

I don't think I'll be able to make this one, but thank you very much for sending invites. I hope it goes well. Jonathunder (talk) 01:54, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Recent Images edit

Hi, you may have notice that I've added some banners to your recent images. This is to stop the being copied to commons. Since moving to commons is only a single mouse click (once the new gadget is enabled), then the chances of free image being moved to commons is now much higher than it used to be. The issue is that commons will no longer accept your images with the current license, there must be a creative commons license as well as a GFDL. Thus there is a real risk of your images being moved by someone who does not know that issue, then the image on en-wiki then deleted under F8, and then the commons image goes because of an invalid license. You might want to consider adding the same banner when you upload any more images - I cannot guarantee catching them all. Ronhjones  (Talk) 17:23, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for that. I'll copy that to new uploads, which there will probably be many of, since a few people on Commons made an unfortunate decision without broad consultation. Jonathunder (talk) 17:57, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
FYI. Well, commons has been moaning about GFDL since at least 2009, and finally agreed on stopping it at c:Commons:Village_pump/Proposals/Archive/2018/08#No_longer_allow_GFDL_for_some_new_uploads Ronhjones  (Talk) 00:59, 28 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

File:ElmerLeeAndersonBW.jpg edit

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Shelly Miscavage edit

Hi Jon, I was looking through my contribution log and saw that I reverted one of your edits w/r/t Shelly Miscavage and the term "disappeared." I didn't realize it was you who made that change, and because you've been active on the talk page, I wouldn't have done that had I noticed who made the edit. Basically my concern with the use of terms like "disappeared" or "missing" is that it seems to imply (or even outright state) that she's being held against her will and/or her husband is keeping her locked up, which appears to be the viewpoint of the many IP editors who periodically insert this into the article. Since the LAPD has closed these missing persons reports as unfounded, I think there are real BLP concerns about perpetuating the "disappeared/missing" language. It implies kidnapping or some other nefarious scheme when that does not appear to be the case. Cosmic Sans (talk) 12:17, 25 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jonathunder. Since you responded to this editors unblock request (they weren't blocked so not sure why a request was made to begin with), I'm wondering if you might take a look at some of their contributions. They seem to be primarily active at Talk:2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries, but their apparent desire to post everything in bold, etc. might indicate a bit of a WP:BATTLEGROUND approach to things. Would it be inappropriate per WP:SHOUT to ask them to tone it down a bit? -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:53, 29 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for posting on their user talk. I left a similar message on the article's talk page, but yours was better. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:29, 29 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Changes to Biography edit

Hello, You reversed my changes to David Perdue page. I did a lot of research on this topic and cited my references properly, the first time. I did not call that a minor edit, but two days later, somebody undid them. The references are the local newspaper, Houston Home Journal and the links are working to the archived articles. I called it minor the second time, because I was just redoing what was undone. What step am I missing? Dale Hoefer 00:32, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

NRHP contributions, tool available edit

Hi Jonathunder, thank you for your many contributions on NRHP topics, including new article Swede Prairie Progressive Farmers' Club just now, which showed up on my watchlist because it happened to link to some article i created. But hey, it looks to me like you must be painfully constructing NRHP infoboxes, when there is a much easier way available. Also you hand-created an NRHP document reference, when there is a fuller pre-prepared reference available to copy-paste, which also includes link to the available accompanying photos.

In the current article, the refnum showing in the infobox is incorrect, I guess probably a not-yet-fixed copy from a different infobox. If you do click on it, it brings you to NRHP doc and photos for a different site. When creating new articles (at least for NRHP listings before some date in 2014), try using the "NRHP infobox generator" created/supported by editor Elkman, starting at http://elkman.net/nrhp/. E.g. what you see for this NRHP is yield for the Swede Prairie topic. Note that includes mostly filled-out infobox which you can/should further customize a bit. It has the refnum already and some more stuff. It would be easier to start an article by copy-pasting that in, rather than customizing from a completely different NRHP site.

Also it includes a good draft NRHP document reference:

<ref name="nrhpdoc">{{cite web|url={{NRHP url|id=86001331}}|title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory/Nomination: Swede Prairie Progressive Farmers' Club |publisher=[[National Park Service]]|author= |date= |accessdate=April 22, 2019}} With {{NRHP url|id=86001331|photos=y|title=accompanying pictures}}</ref>

Which includes link to the accompanying photos. What I do is further customize that reference, to add the author and date of prep (like you did already in your reference), and further to add a count of the number of photos and to mention the photos' year(s):

<ref name="nrhpdoc">{{cite web|url={{NRHP url|id=86001331}}|title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory/Nomination: Swede Prairie Progressive Farmers' Club |publisher=[[National Park Service]]|author=Susan Granger |date=May 1985 |accessdate=April 22, 2019}} With {{NRHP url|id=86001331|photos=y|title=accompanying two photos from 1984-85}}</ref>

That reference displays as:[1]

References

  1. ^ Susan Granger (May 1985). "National Register of Historic Places Inventory/Nomination: Swede Prairie Progressive Farmers' Club". National Park Service. Retrieved April 22, 2019. With accompanying two photos from 1984-85

Oh I see you used " |last=Granger |first=Susan ", which is a bit better I guess, instead of just "|author=Susan Granger".

I hope there is some helpful info for you here. Basically you should just start at http://elkman.net/nrhp/ or http://elkman.net/nrhp/infobox.php, and search for your NRHP. There is some more info about this at wp:NRHPHELP, too. Any which way you choose to do it, I am just glad you are contributing, and I hope you keep up your good work! cheers, --Doncram (talk) 00:00, 23 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular) edit

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

OTD June 5 edit

I undid your edit on Selected anniversaries/June 5, because you took out two items that were having significant anniversaries (10th and 30th). I do appreciate the help, though I would prefer if you edit dates that I haven't done yet (in the page history, I'll have an edit with the summary "update for [year]"). Thanks. howcheng {chat} 15:49, 4 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

So now I saw your edit on June 4 too. If Tiananmen was eligible again, that pushes Tank Man out of June 5, but the 2009 item still gets priority. Also, three of the items you picked (Daming, Antonio Luna, and Congo Civil War) were on last year, and June 5 happens to have a large pool of eligible articles, so it would be preferable to give some of those other items a chance (see the talk page for each year's change log). Thanks again. howcheng {chat} 16:14, 4 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

I've been generally saddened by the resignations in the wake of Framgate, and noticed that you had turned in the admin bit and are planning to step away from this site. While it's been awhile since we crossed paths, I recall you as an outstanding, thoughtful editor and admin, and Wikipedia will be poorer for your absence. I completely understand the reasons behind it—I just wanted to say that you've had a very positive impact here; I will miss running into you here and there, and I wish you luck in whatever you do with your reclaimed Wikipedia time. :) Take care.
