Decision Made

When I took an indefinite "Wikibreak," it was becoming clear that my specialized areas of interest and expertise were such that contributions I would be qualified to make were becoming less likely to meet increasingly restrictive content policies. This has become even clearer now that I am finding that articles on subjects on which I have relied on Wikipedia as a research tool are now being swiftly deleted, and I am having to dig for them in much more specialized publications, if they are to be found at all. That I can find articles on virtually any plant species, notable or otherwise, and public high schools with a couple hundred students, but nothing on the candidates running for office in my Congressional District, or on agencies of my state government, both of which have a serious impact on my life, makes Wikipedia a site I am visiting more and more rarely as a reader. I am, thus, less inclined to devote my time trying to find some way to contribute as a writer or editor. I do wish you all well, and hope, quite literally, that you have fun with your Wikitime. EncMstr: You're too kind, but thank you just the same. I obviously very badly misunderstood the Wikipedia concept. I mistakenly thought that freed from the tyranny of page counts, articles which are important to ordinary people in small towns, and members of very select groups, could finally have a place. The rapid deletion of the article on one of only two challengers to my sitting congressman on grounds of lack of "prominence," despite the protestations of Keri Chisholm, editor of the preeminent political blog in our state and a prominent political consultant himself, pretty much convinced me that Oregon, and particularly rural Oregon, is too "small potatoes" for Wikipedia. Since I live and work in Oregon, that pretty much excludes me. Sure, I can find out who the principal of David Douglas High School is, but nothing about who may represent me in Congress. Wikipedia remains an important research tool... but not on any of the subjects which are most important to me in my daily life. I'm too busy to do it right now, but perhaps a specialized Wiki for Oregonians is in order... at least until our state and its concerns reach prominence that meets Wikipedia standards. Wiki Loves Pride

You are invited! Wiki Loves Pride

You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride, a global campaign to create and improve LGBT-related content at Wikipedia during the month of June, culminating with a multinational edit-a-thon on June 21. The project is being spearheaded by two organizers with roots in the Pacific Northwest. Meetups are being organized in some cities, or you can participate remotely. Wikimedia Commons will also be hosting an LGBT-related photo challenge. In Portland, there are two ways to contribute. One is a photography campaign called "Pride PDX", for pictures related to LGBT culture and history. The Wiki Loves Pride edit-a-thon will be held on Saturday, June 21 from noon–4pm at Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 236 at Portland State University.
