Pictures

Hi. I want to bring in a picture or two from my image search engine to use in Wikipedia articles but I understand that the encylopedia follows a copyright policy. Is there a way to tell whether or not an image has a copyright? And how do I upload the images? Thanks. --Sky Attacker (talk) 23:28, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Heh, unfortunately images and image copyright are probably the only things on here I know next to nothing about, but I can point you in the right direction at least with a barrage of links. Wikipedia:Images, Wikipedia:Uploading images, Wikipedia:Image use policy and Wikipedia:Copyrights#Image guidelines should be enough to get you started.--Jac16888Talk 01:09, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll look into those links. --Sky Attacker (talk) 02:30, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

May i know why was this deleted?

"Article about a real person, which does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject)" - is what it says about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MC-El

May i ask you - where are you from??? and also, how can i prove that this page is important (because i know many people who were searching information about that rap singer, and couldn't find any. So i thought it's the point of Wikipedia to help peoplefind information that they need.

--Flexalumna2008 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 12:46, 17 March 2009 (UTC).

Well for starters, this is the English-language wikipedia, so the article was of little use to most people here anyway. Secondly, the article itself said " 'MC-El' is not yet very well-known". Which straight away suggests the person doesn't meet WP:Notability. A guy whose apparently unsigned and whose only musical output is to stick a few songs on the net for his social circle to hear is not going to get an article anytime soon, I recommend you come back when he has done a major tour, or gotten in the charts or something--Jac16888Talk 13:02, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

User talk:Woman Priest

With regards to this user, this does appear to be a misunderstanding. I've left a note on the user's talk page. What do you think? GlassCobra 15:08, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Okay, no problem, I'm not familiar with Hamish Ross; if you think it's him, I'll go with that. Thanks. GlassCobra 15:33, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

A suggestion to administrators

Hi Jac16888.

Over the last few days, I've been looking with interest at the daily featured articles when I noticed that any IP can edit featured articles at any time, including when featured articles are "today's featured article". Perhaps it might be a good idea for administrators to semi-protect featured articles when they are "today's features article" to prevent IPs being able to vandalise them, as it spoils the image of Wikipedia. Do you think this thought should be taken to other administrators? --Sky Attacker (talk) 21:50, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

This is a suggestion which comes up quite often, since being on the front page makes an article more vulnerable. However, one of the key things about Wikipedia is that anyone can edit it, something we like to be true as much as possible, and its kinda hard to say that if our daily featured articles can't be edited by anyone. As a general rule of thumb we prefer to have the daily FA unprotected as much as possible, only really protecting it for short periods during concerted attacks. The fact that's its the day's FA means a lot of people will be watching it closely, vandalism is usually reverted in under a minute--Jac16888Talk 21:58, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi. I restored this redirect, as this and other "new" accounts are astroturfing Talk:Medical cannabis and there needs to be a way to keep track of the account creation. foundsf.org

Hello deletionist. Its people like you who are destroying wikipedia because you lead with your delete button and not with anything resembling intelligence. Perhaps you would investigate the value, funding and legitimate connections of a page I created called foundsf.org. You deleted it without a whit of understanding. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Hank_chapot —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.164.170.81 (talk) 03:03, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Actually, its people like you who are destroying Wikipedia, by attacking volunteers and people who just want to help, simply for following the rules. I could point out several things wrong with your statement above, so I shall. Firstly, newbie? If this is Hank Chapot, then maybe you have been here longer than me, but I've done much more in that time, and at least I remember to sign my posts, and know about simple things like Wikipedia:Notability. When I came across your article, I did several things before I deleted it. I checked out the website itself, and I saw nothing special, just your standard run-of-the-mill wiki somebody decided to set up, not very old and with less than 4000 hits. There are billions of websites out there, and many hundreds of thousands of wiki's. They can't all have articles obviously, they need to meet one of the following criteria:
  • 1. The content itself has been the subject of multiple non-trivial published works whose source is independent of the site itself. This criterion includes reliable published works in all forms, such as newspaper and magazine articles, books, television documentaries, websites, and published reports by consumer watchdog organizations. except for the following:
  • Media re-prints of press releases and advertising for the content or site.
  • Trivial coverage, such as (1) newspaper articles that simply report the Internet address, (2) newspaper articles that simply report the times at which such content is updated or made available, (3) a brief summary of the nature of the content or the publication of Internet addresses and site or (4) content descriptions in Internet directories or online stores.
  • 2. The website or content has won a well-known and independent award from either a publication or organization.
  • 3. The content is distributed via a medium which is both respected and independent of the creators, either through an online newspaper or magazine, an online publisher, or an online broadcaster;except for trivial distribution including content being hosted on sites without editorial oversight (such as YouTube, MySpace, GeoCities, Newgrounds, personal blogs, etc.).
Now, when I checked, I found that, surprisingly, foundsf didn't meet any of these criteria. Therefore, I deleted it, and would do it again too. Thank you --Jac16888Talk 09:58, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Because you cannot tell until you try whether your efforts will be accepted or rejected. You are doing the right thing; to not try is to reject them before giving them a chance. I agree, though, it can get old at times, when one's efforts are rudely and soundly rejected multiple times in a row with no breaks. KillerChihuahua?!? 00:20, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Admittedly its gone a lot worse than that before, I remember one time trying to help a user who wasn't even blocked, but heading down a bad route. Your deletion of Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/3RRHeader/Administrator instructions

I noticed that you deleted Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/3RRHeader/Administrator instructions. Why? According to the reason you stated for your deletion in the deletion log, it was a page dependent on a deleted or nonexistent page. It has a parent page, so that is not true. Can you please restore that page? -- IRP 20:28, 2 April 2009 (UTC), modified 20:43, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

Wow, that was a long time ago, obviously it appears that it luckily wasn't a major issue. Looking back it would seem that the page it redirected to had been mismoved then moved to the right place, in between that this page, which was a redirect to another, was bot-fixed to point to the wrong title and never fixed. This caused this page to be a dead redirect, meaning it will have showed up in WP:Database reports/Broken redirects, which is presumbaly why I deleted it. I've recreated the page as a redirect to the right place this time--Jac16888Talk 20:46, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

Your deletion of Martin mason

Hi there! I must admit that I'm rather puzzled that you chose to delete this as a G1 (patent nonsense). Didn't at all seem like nonsense to me. YMMV, of course. decltype (talk) 23:56, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Not sure what YMMV means, but when I read the article, I didn't see anything that looked like an attack and did read as utter nonsense--Jac16888Talk 00:00, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
My bad, since it was a blue link I assumed there was an article: YMMV (your mileage may vary) ~= To express a possible difference in taste, "this is just my opinion, your opinion may be different". To me, the last sentence, in particular the last sentence fragment read like an attack, essentially making the article an "attack page or negative unsourced BLP", thus G10. But again, YMMV :) decltype (talk) 01:56, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Broken redirects

Hey there. If possible, it would be great if you could include the name of the target page in your deletion summary of broken redirects. (The little "delete" links at Wikipedia:Database reports/Broken redirects actually include the reason with a link to the target page automatically.) It makes life a lot easier for non-admins to track where the actual content was when the broken redirect was deleted. And it makes it easier for admins to be able to point to target page without having to dig through Special:Undelete. Just something to consider. Cheers. --MZMcBride (talk) 00:36, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Protection of A Midsummer Night's Dream

I don't know where to go to ask, but I would suggest protecting A midsummer's night dream because of Vandalism. WP:RFPP is the place to request protection, and you're probably better of asking there to be honest, I don't protect that often, and I'm not sure about this one, since you're right, it is vandalised more than edited it would appear, but the vandalism doesn't occur that often--Jac16888Talk 20:03, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Dublin Pride

Hi dude,

Eh I set up a reference for Dublin Pride last night and its been deleted. I have put something up in the delete discussion page but I have heard nothign back. So like can you tell me what I need to do.

Firstly Dublin Pride is a charity run annually for the last 26 odd years. Im not sure why it dosnt have an entry already!! Im on the events committee and its my job to put together and entry for wiki.

Other cities already have entries.

So im kinda lost as to what the story is and the user who deleted the page did not provide any detailed information beyond "Blatently advertising" which is rubbish frankly and no use to me in developing a good article.

Anyways would appreciate a bit of info. My email is martinmelvin_2@hotmail.com. Would appreciate some help today. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Martin-09-DP (talkcontribs) 12:27, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

reading the article, I have to agree with the deleting admin, it was blatant advertising, comments such as this "From modest beginnings, we have gone from a one-day event to a full-blown 10-day festival. This year we have ambitious plans to make Dublin LGBTQ Pride 2009 the most colourful and best Pride Festival EVER!" for example, are clearly biased. Clearly, you have a conflict of interest with the subject, you should be writing about something with which you are personally involved, particularly not if its been assigned to you as a job, there is no way you can be neutral. I'm sorry but you'll have to tell them you can't do it. If the subject is truly notable, then someone else will write it an article eventually--Jac16888Talk 12:37, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

I actually don't know anything about it, but the name -understandably- caught my eye. Perhaps someone created it intending to write on my Talk page. Would you please paste its contents onto my Talk page now (or move into my space), then I can assess it. Thanks. --Yumegusa (talk) 13:33, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, that took a bit of messing about. I restored it, then realised it had been made by you, presumably by mistake, then moved to User talk:User:Yumegusa/archive1, also yours but not in your space. What I've done it, i merged that archive with your already existing archive and merged the two together, so you've no missing talk history. I've deleted both the ones that weren't in your userspace, all the one I orginally deleted contained was "Page posted to in error. Old content archived at "User talk:User:Yumegusa/archive1". Hopefully that should be it all sorted now--Jac16888Talk 13:46, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Its up to the nominators discretion whether or not they notify an articles creator about an AFD or prod, Its not required because it is assumed that if a person cares about an article they'll be watching it--Jac16888Talk 18:19, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
This assumption does not hold water. When you have several thousand articles in different wikipedias under your belt and many more on your watchlists, there is no way you can spot a single edit made to a page which you had initiated four or five years ago. --Ghirla-трёп- 20:23, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. Thanks for reviewing the block on this user. Just to let you know there was a request at WP:RPP to protect the page as he was abusing it. I declined that, as obviously there's no need, but I thought you may want to review his block to remove talkpage editing rights if yuo think he may abuse it again. Cheers. --GedUK  10:24, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the nudge, I saw the request at RPP and I'm keeping an eye on the page, if there's more activity, I'll probably lock it--Jac16888Talk 10:30, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Ah okay thanks. Cirt (talk) 16:11, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Can you please delete this again - I was adding non-english tag while you were deleting the first one and for some reason it didn't prompt me while saving that it had recently been deleted. Thanks.     JCutter  talk to me }     01:01, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Archive on my talk page

I see you created one, but I'm unsure of why. -- BPMullins | Talk 20:30, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Hmm, I think I understand whats happened here. Basically, I've been spending the last couple of weeks clearing out Wikipedia:Database reports/Ownerless pages in the user space‎, one of which was User talk:BPmullins, which I see you're actually linking to in your sig, which is probably where the problem arose. Basically, the archive I created is all the content from that page, as it was it wasn't actually connected to you at all.--Jac16888Talk 20:52, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Not ownerless

My old talk pages "belong" to me, and were under my old username, which still belongs to me. I appreciate that you're doing maintenance work, but in this case no work was required. Thanks anyway.   Will Beback  talk  17:23, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

The best place to request this is WP:AFC, although I will say that it takes more than a website and a myspace page to demonstrate the necessary notability--Jac16888Talk 05:01, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

WP:MFD

User:Mrshaba has essentially left WP. They were an SPA editing only the Solar energy article. Other than one edit, in the last few months they have only been using WP to blog with one other user on that users talk page. If they undelete the "experiments", I will not only take it to WP:MFD, but ask that the page be oversighted. 199.125.109.43 (talk) 16:53, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Then take it to MFD. As has been made clear to you, this does not fit the criteria of being speediable as an attack page. The best thing you can do is take it to MFD--Jac16888Talk 18:14, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. I took the liberty to change your changes a bit[2] so they fit better with how the other switches are called. Hope you don't mind. Good idea adding that switch though :-) Regards SoWhy 22:46, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Yeah no problem. I'd expected someone would make some change to it. One of the advantages of a wiki :)--Jac16888Talk 22:53, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Meatheaded Article

You might want to look at Meathead (band).

  • It is a small article about a band that does not appear to be well-known.
  • The ONE reference external link that the article provides is not an inline citation and while the website is reliable, the link doesn't appear to be useful for backing up the text in the article.
  • Not only does the article fail to make its only source clear enough, but it fails to cover enough information displayed in the article.
  • All that the source suggests is that the band may exist, it doesn't prove that the band is notable enough to have a Wikipedia article.

Failed dopplerganers

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you ... I am now working at a startup and don't have nearly as much free time as I used to. Yes, I created those doppleganger tags before I understood how I was supposed to do it. And then when I tried to actually register them the system wouldn't let me. So those tags aren't actually needed and if they are causing any kind of problem just delete them. -- Prove It (talk) 13:04, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Have gone ahead and deleted them. Thanks.--Jac16888Talk 18:59, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Also sorry for taking so long. I was under the impression that I had registered my doppelgangers. I'll take care of that in the next day or two. Thanks for the heads-up. Robert A.West (Talk) 20:15, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Deleting of Léon Thevenin

Why the delete of a simple redirect? Did you flunk Linear Circuits and taking your revenge on poor Léon? elpincha (talk) 05:52, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

No actually, I deleted it because it was broken, redirecting to Léon Charles Thevenin. If you're going to create a redirect, try and have it actually point to an article that exists--Jac16888Talk 10:02, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

My subpages

Not sure who requested their deletion, but it wasn't me. Did someone sign my name somewhere? -SCEhardT 12:55, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Wow sorry, that is a complete cock-up on my part, I did not pay proper attention to what was going on. It popped up for deletion because it transcluded User:Unionhawk/Sandbox/welcome, which was actually tagged for deletion by the author instead of looking properly I just looked and saw that you were the last editor then deleted it. I am very very sorry, that was totally my fault--Jac16888Talk 13:01, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
Ah, ok - no worries! -SCEhardT 13:31, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Ty for deleting the edit I put in (I was not logged in), I realized once I put it in that it was an unnecessary edit because of the starring on the infobox. I tried to undo this edit but my computer lagged x[ Pic Editor960 (talk) 18:49, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Hello

Hi, can I please get some assistance with posting an article? I see you deleted it, I would like to try and improve the article so that it stays on wikipedia? Its very important for my school project.

Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Arcanist0990 (talkcontribs) 09:21, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

There were two key problems with your article. One, it wasn't in English, this is the English Wikipedia. And two, we already have an article about Wikiversity, and as far as I could tell it looked like you had just translated it. I'm sorry about your school project but that article has no place here--Jac16888Talk 10:23, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

gah. thx. then someone just gave me a link to the wrong wikipedia -.- sry once more.

No problem--Jac16888Talk 11:33, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

melodic black metal

The page has already been deleted, but is there any way to get the information from that page back? It had useful info that could be added to the black metal page, and I'd like to see it for personal use. 72.72.199.25 (talk)
