I agree- this whole discussion is pointless and wasting space. I am in favor of deleting or summaring all comments since you last checked in on June 12th as they all appear to be nothing but a conversation between Ralphthebear and myself (the tone is the same as the unsigned comments from the same IP address). As far as the article goes, I'd be in favor of leaving the school controversy in as long as the modifiers are in or taking them both out. If you go to the Wikipedia main page towards the bottom you will find links to the sister projects - Wiktionary, Wikiquote, etc. Commons is in the second row of those links. Uploading there is just like uploading here with one exception - no fair use images are allowed. Public domain, GFDL and CC licenses are. Uploading images to Commons means that they can be used on all language projects without having to upload the image into each language's encyclopedia. I transferred your other picture for you. Saint Mungo

I don't think it is usual to have the Saints category when the article is in two of the subcategories of Saints. WP:CG says "Articles should not usually be in both a category and its subcategory." Hope this helps ! Angus McLellan (Talk) 20:28, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Naming High Points

Hi Isoxyl -- The way to go about proposing a name for a high point is via the federal Board on Geographic Names. If you follow the "Domestic Names" link, you can "Propose or Change a Name", using an on-line form. (I gave you a link to the BGN home page in case you want to explore the site a bit.) Take a look at the form and see what sort of info they're looking for. Local support for a new name, or evidence for local use of an existing name that hasn't made it into the BGN database, are the things that will make a name proposal successful. Once they receive a naming proposal, they send it out to all sorts of people on their contact list for comment, including the town and county governments, state agencies, and any tribal groups that are in the area. So to build that support, I'd start with some of the town governing boards -- the selectmen, the conservation commission, the historic commission if there is one, maybe the planning board -- and see what type of response you get. Stars on houses in new england

Hey, I'm back in New England and I just realized that a lot of houses in nh at least have stars mounted to the right of their doors. You wouldn't happen to have any idea what the symbolize do you? --unsigned from 70.109.131.95

Thanks for writing, 70.109.131.95. I am not sure about it, but I have seen it a lot myself. My mother has one too. It seems like something patriotic, akin to the Blue and Gold Stars seen after WWII. Take a look at Blue Star Mothers Club and Service flag. The stars on these old banners come in three colors: Gold (KIA), Silver (disabled due to wounds), and Blue (in the service). However, most of the stars I've seen today have been Red, which may be a way of honoring this patriotic service, without reference to a child in the military? I'm not sure, but I do see them frequently, and often on all parts of a house -- be it beside a door or somewhere else. Quite large, though. If you find out more, leave me a comment. Londonderry

Hey Isoxyl, Thanks for your outstanding efforts in tackling the surprisingly touchy wording regarding the origin of Londonderry's name. It was eye-opening to me, especially after I noticed someone (perhaps automatically) changing every reference of "Derry" to "Londonderry" without having read the article. I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Steve Lake (pit boss), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. Sir/Madame,

I am not simply creating a clan. It is what it is! I am in talks with the Lord Lyon King of Arms currently about having my clan recognized as an "official" clan of Scotland. His (the Uk's government) definition of clan is this: ANY family which is comprised of members who claim the same ancestry! The original comment by the anonymous (if memory serves correctly) user should have been put at the bottom when it was first written. You did not err when you responded. Re: edits and references on Clan MacLea

thanks for adding the references. Sorry to be pedantic. You say that this is well known in clan circles, but I do not think this is a fair attitude towards other editors. My thinking is that the threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth. See Wikipedia:Verifiability. I think it is of the outmost importance to place references to living chiefs, especially if good third party references list another as chief. As you can no doubt guess, chiefs are often subject to vandalism and it best for all concerned that they are properly referenced, by name, title and designation. The problem with the change of chief is that Burk's and the Standing Council are not updating their sites. The only good reference is the highlander magazine, and this updates only once a year (and only has what information it is given). In my view, Clan web sites are not the best references, they are self-published and questionable sources as sources on themselves. However, and WP:SELFPUB gives leeway for exemptions, sometimes there is little other option, as in this present case. Yours ever, Czar Brodie (talk) 20:52, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Londonderry, again

Hi, when you get back from break would you mind looking at the Londonderry, New Hampshire page and its recent edit history? We've got a partisan know-it-all trying to change the Londonderry/Derry info, and it would be helpful to have some input from one who has been through this before. What exactly is that guys problem. I added a genuine reference taken from the Rev Parker's very detailed original book on the town of Londonderry where it is clearly stated that the name was chosen by immigrants from the city of Londonderry in the Kingdom of Ireland as it was then known. No-one cares what the Irish city is known as now, the paragraph concerned relates to historical facts. There is no naming dispute as far as I am concerned in the New Hampshire article, it is other editors who are creating one. --81.187.71.75 (talk) 20:10, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

I'm just concerned about the language in the Londonderry NH article not attracting frequent flame-wars and partisanship on both sides. The previous language we had held up very well. I don't mind if it changed a bit to reflect the LHS language, but it needs to stay absolutely neutral concerning the name dispute in Ireland, IMHO. As long as we do that, it won't be a problem. But if you look at the history, you'll see this page is a FREQUENT target of Irish/N Irish partisans. We don't need any of that. As long as we look to the same goal and keep that in mind, we should have acceptable language for the article. Isoxyl (talk) 21:27, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

I concur absolutely, my only intention at the end of the day was to complement the article with additional factual information which someone chose to ridicule for political reasons. The people who emigrated from the Londonderry region of Ireland were obviously fond of their heritage in naming the town in New Hampshire after it. Likewise, the new town of Derry which I assume was named by Irish immigrants to reflect their own fondness of a city long departed. I cannot see what the problem is with some editors? Glad we've got a good understanding. Thanks! BTW, you should open an account if you're going to do some editing now and then. Makes it a lot easier to tell the spammers/partisans from the people with "good faith"--could be some of why you've felt unjustly reverted. It's easy to revert an IP address entry thinking it's just someone with an agenda. But if they take the time to register.... :) Anyway, just a suggestion. Adrianne Wadewitz was a feminist scholar of 18th-Century British literature, and a prolific editor of the site. As part of a worldwide series of tributes, New England Wikimedians, in conjunction with local institutions of higher learning, have created three edit-a-thons that will be occurring in May and June. The events are as follows: May 21st at Northeastern University's Snell Library, in the Digital Scholarship Commons on the second floor May 22nd at Brown University's Rockefeller Library, in the Digital Scholarship Lab June 25th at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (exact location TBA), where we will also be hosting a "how to conduct an edit-a-thon" session beforehand We hope that you will be able to join us, whether you are an experienced editor or are using Wikipedia for the first time.
