Request for some action

Hello Ioeth. One friend pointed me to your person, that you would probably help me. The case is following. I added to this completely unreferenced article: All-Polish Youth some sources and User:Krzyzowiec continues to whitewash it. I asked him on the talk page - [1] - to stop removing valid references. He replied - [2] - with harsh uncivil comments, calling me "socialist" and accusing me of "communistic propaganda", for instance. Moreover, he again blanked whole my constructive contributions, see [3], calling me "left-liberal kid" etc., in edit summaries. He also blanked references in similar article - [4] - with mocking edit summary "NAnanNANa". If some anonymous IP would do this, it would be no problem to block it but this is other case, because it is registered user. Personally I think his uncivil behavior and removal of content is pure vandalism. Please, take some action. Thank you. - Darwinek (talk) 22:12, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Pseudoscience discretionary sanctions

Hi! As somebody who commented on a January proposal to place all articles related to homeopathy on article probation, I would greatly appreciate your input on a new proposal to help combat disruption that would scrap the probation and implement discretionary sanctions. I apologize for any intrusion, but this is to my knowledge the first time sanctions of this nature have been attempted to be enforced by the community, so I feel that a wide range of opinions is necessary. Thank you in advance for any comments you may make. east718 (talk) 18:59, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Need info on the Digwuren restriction

Hi, I have 2 questions in relation to my listing in Digwuren.

 • 1. Did you stumble on the edit that led to my listing by chance, or were you pointed there by someone?
If the latter, who was this someone?
 • 2. Could you please state specifically the violation I committed to be listed there?

The reason I ask is that I have been attacked using the edit restriction as a weapon citing the restriction: "The user Stor Stark7 has been placed under general ArbCom restriction since January that year for his uncivil and disruptive behavior in January". I grant that I was uncivil, but was "disruptive" really part of your verdict? Regards: --Stor stark7 Talk 18:32, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Dear Ioeth, considering that you added six users to the Digwuren list, me among them, and that at least two of these additions were requested by Piotrus, I suggest to you to have a close look whether Piotrus himself should be included there, too. -- Matthead  Discuß   01:00, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

friendlytag.js

I looked over the freindlytag.js and the code looks very straight forward when it comes to adding tags. I was hoping to add some more cleanup tags submit the code back to you for consideration. The problem is that I am not a JavaScript programmer (though I have some programing background in other languages.) I copied your code into my domain at User:Ctempleton3/friendlytag.js and then changed my monobook to read the following:

importScript('User:AzaToth/twinkle.js');
importScript('User:Ctempleton3/friendly.js');

The problem that I am having is that when I do this the code does not work at all. What am I not doing? I would really like to help if I can and I think I can even with my limited knowledge if I can get past the first few problems. Thanks - Ctempleton3 (talk) 16:14, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Unblocking of User:AndyCook?

I am curious if you would be ok with an unblocking for User:AndyCook? He was blocked indefinitely after his four edits (all clear vandalism) but it has been a few months and his main request is to be able to edit under his real name. I would like to unblock, with a note that one more vandalism like will result in an immediate permanent block. Thoughts? -- Ricky81682 (talk) 07:11, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

About TW and Rollback

I noticed on the talk page of WP:TW that User:AzaToth is doing something with rollback and TW, but its status isn't clear, and it was working before I got the rollbacker bit (I have not tested it with the bit just yet). I also noticed a mention of an integration script written by you. I found its link from your user page, but I noticed that it has no documentation. Would you mind providing a brief description of what exactly it does (which links it alters, if/how it detects the rollback bit etc) and its status? It would be greatly appreciated. getChecked moved to morebits.

Hi Ioeth, AzaToth moved getChecked into morebits.js. This should fix several issues that are currently occurring in both Twinkle and Friendly. If you can make changes to friendlyshared.js and friendlytag.js similar to these twinklearv.js changes. That would be very helpful. --TheDJ (talkcontribs) 20:16, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Redirect of Template:Kreisreform2007

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Template:Kreisreform2007, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Template:Kreisreform2007 is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Template:Kreisreform2007, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Friendly

Hello. I'm a sysop on the Romanian Wikipedia and I translated Friendly into Romanian (ro:Utilizator:Firilacroco/friendlytag.js) (of course I used the Romanian tags into the script). Everythins is almost allright except one thing:

var wikipedia_wiki = new Wikipedia.wiki( 'Modific articolul', query, friendlytag.callbacks.main );

Firebug returns me this error:

form has no properties
main(Object currentAction=Modific articolul query=Object)index.php (line 406)
onload()index.php (line 1478)
if( !tagRe.exec( form.wpTextbox1.value ) ) {

Is this problem from my wiki's javascript or is from the script? Thank you in advance and sorry for the wasted time. Firilăcroco   mesage 13:59, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Firilăcroco, sorry it's taken me so long to respond. Did you get the script working or are you still having this problem? Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 19:39, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

"form has no properties" - are you sure that the script is accessing the correct form on the page. This error message leads me to suspect that it may be accessing the wrong one. If so, it would be unable to find form.wpTextbox1. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 14:10, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Made a slight modification to Friendly

Just as a heads-up, I made a small modification on User:Ioeth/friendlywelcome.js (see this diff). The change is so that Friendly knows that the {{welcomeunclesam}} template can put an article name in if one is provided, as the template had been modified to support it. Did I do it right? SchuminWeb (Talk) 00:07, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Looks good; thanks, SchuminWeb! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 02:54, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
And I think I'm either missing something either on the code or the template, because it's not working. Can you look and see if you see anything wrong? The {{welcomeunclesam}} template displays the article when I put the "art" parameter in manually, but not when it goes through Friendly. Any ideas? SchuminWeb (Talk) 18:46, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
I figured out what the deal was. The value that it was trying to reference the artHash array with didn't have the proper capitalization, so it defaulted to false when it couldn't find the change that you made. It's a bug that's been in there for a long time, apparently; it just never had any effect before. Do a CTRL + F5 to get the new script code and you should be good to go! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 13:16, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
Awesome. Thanks! SchuminWeb (Talk) 14:23, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Man-Pop Festival

I have added one reference to the page and hope to add more. Is this enough for you to remove the tag? I am not entirely certain of the protocol here, particularly as to whether the initial caution should be removed by the editor placing same, rather than by me.

Thank you for not deleting the article in the interim since, in terms of Winnipeg, this festival was very important, and is also part of the history of the early international success of Led Zeppelin.

Omega Tau

Why have you deleted the page? I am an active member of the fraternity at Texas Lutheran University and the information that I put there is cited from the university website.--Omegatau07 (talk) 20:26, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

The page keeps being deleted because the content that you add for it does not assert the notability of the subject. From the Criteria for Speedy Deletion:

An article about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content that does not indicate why its subject is important or significant. This is distinct from questions of verifiability and reliability of sources, and is a lower standard than notability; to avoid speedy deletion an article does not have to prove that its subject is notable, just give a reasonable indication of why it might be notable. A7 applies only to articles about web content or articles on people and organizations themselves, not articles on their books, albums, software and so on. Other article types are not eligible for deletion by this criterion. If controversial, as with schools, list the article at Articles for deletion instead.

Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 20:26, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

What then is notable about the many other pages that discuss various greek organizations? Would being the oldest fraternity on campus be appropriate or having at an alumni in a wikipedia article on himself that credits him being a part of the fraternity?--Omegatau07 (talk) 20:31, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

See Wikipedia's notability guideline for more specific details of how you can assert the notability of the organization. Please let me know if you have any questions. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 20:33, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Does being around for 50 years not fit the longevity criteria, having one of the founders as a announcer during the Super Bowl not fit the scope of national importance criteria, and having more alumni than the size of the university not fit the size criteria?--Omegatau07 (talk) 20:40, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Those factors may, if you can find reliable sources that can verify the notability. Please take a look at those two links to get more information about reliable sources and Wikipedia's verifiability policy. The details you've outlined wouldn't necessarily qualify the article for inclusion, though. As it says in the notability guideline, "individual chapters of national and international organizations are usually not notable enough to warrant a separate article unless sufficient notability is established through reliable sources that extend beyond the organization's local area". Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 20:45, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

We are not a chapter of a national organization so we cannot fall under these guidelines limiting an article. Also the page on Verne Lundquist, who is one of the founders, shows that the organization has "sufficient notability... established through reliable sources that extend beyond the organization's local area" because those sports telecasts are national.--Omegatau07 (talk) 20:56, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

That may be true, but the notability of Omega Tau is not inherited from Verne Lundquist. Yes, Mr. Lundquist is notable enough to have an article about him here, but that does not mean that every organization that he has ever belonged to does (i.e., the organizations can surely be mentioned in his article, but this does not mean that each one is notable enough to have an article of its own). The standard way of demonstrating notability involves showing that others have deemed it worthy of being written about. Sources themselves do not establish notability, but they prove notability. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 21:05, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

What then gives Texas Lutheran it's notability? or any other small institution for that matter?--Omegatau07 (talk) 21:16, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

It is a university, and universities are generally regarded as being inherently notable, regardless of scope. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 14:02, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Airchiving

Hi loeth, Tried to submit "Airchiving" content to the wikipedia but it's been rejected. Is the issue with the content is that I'm listing www.airchiving.com as an external link? If that's the case, if I search for wikipedia entry on wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org is listed as an external link in that entry also. So if airchiving topic references the site where the term was taking from how should I list the url or should it not be included at all? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Vlasha (talkcontribs) 10:29, 25 September 2008 (EST)

Vlasha, I've deleted Airchiving twice now for multiple reasons. First, the "article" is written like an advertisement (WP:CSD#G11), does not assert the notability of the company (WP:CSD#A7), and contains no reliable, independent sources to back up any of the article content. Have a look at Wikipedia's your first article tutorial and see if you can learn how to contribute while meeting our policies and guidelines. Thanks! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 15:33, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
I disagree with the assessment of the latest version of "Airchiving". I was in the process of deleting the db tag when the article was deleted. The article describes an important trend in modern computing, and could easily be cleaned up to be less product-specific. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 15:57, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
The only difference between that and the other versions that I deleted was that the latest one did not have links to parked domains. Other than that, they were word-for-word identical. Furthermore, a Google search of "Airchiving" yields only 3 results, only 1 of which appears to be relevant, and that page doesn't even contain the word anymore. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 17:30, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Was it really necessary to block this guy indef? I was in the process of leaving a concern when I hit an edit conflict.

In cases like that, it's probably better to gently let them know they need to change their name than block them without warning. Daniel Case (talk) 18:55, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Elihu Lauterpacht

Hi, I don't think it is a good practice to speedy delete article while people are in the middle of work on them. You can place a tag or whatever. Now could you be so kind to recreate the article and give be an hour or two. BTW knighted people are not subjects to speedy by default. Cheers. M0RD00R (talk) 19:54, 25 September 2008 (UTC) Persons who have research institutions at Cambridge Uni named after them, are not even a subject to AfD. [8].M0RD00R (talk) 19:57, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Any article can be subjected to an AfD debate, regardless of content, if someone proposes it. The stub article that you created about "Elihu Lauterpacht" did qualify for speedy deletion under criteria A7. It did not assert the need for an independent article about him outside of the scope of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, which is why I deleted it. So sorry if I have offended you, as I mean no disrespect. Perhaps in the future, you should create articles such as this one in your userspace and then work on them there until they have sufficient content to be moved into the main article space. I have restored the article to Elihu Lauterpacht. Cheers! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 20:05, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
No problem. Finished my edits for today. Off course article is not even close to completion, I hope to continue soon, but now it surely meets bare minimum requirements for inclusion. I hope. :) M0RD00R (talk) 21:53, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
It's starting to look really good. A great way to let folks know that you're still working on the article is to use that {{underconstruction}} tag that I popped up top there. A new article is much more likely to be given leeway if it has that tag up at the top there. After you've got a good chunk of it completed, like it seems you do now, you can go ahead and pull that tag off of there. Cheers, and keep up the great work! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 13:38, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

About Robert Moses Kin

Hi, I just created a stub kind of article on Robert Moses Kin on which you marked articleissues today.

 • I am not related to him in anyway in language, race or profession. He is a popular artist in bay area, california, and also performs in many cities in U.S.A. He is also a faculty member at Stanford.
 • I was searching for information oh him, and found it on google, but could not find any article on wikipedia. So I added an article here.
 • Stanford faculty page is more reliable than lot of other resources. However there is lot of information on him on web. Please see RMK on web, images, news, in blogs etc. You may also notice historical archives on Robert Moses. I also added some reviews on him or his shows in external links.
 • Let me know how I can improve the article so that you can remove the tag.

mlpkr (talk) 23:26, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Let you know how you can improve the article? It doesn't look like you need any advice in that area; the work that you've done on it since I tagged it is top notch! When it comes to article tags like that, you don't have to wait for someone else to remove them. If they no longer apply, simply pull them off of there. Based on the additions and edits that you've made since I tagged it, I'd say that none of them apply anymore, so pull 'em all off! Cheers, and keep up the good work! I saw you placed some tags on the article on Steven Kleinman.

Was it your intention to explain any on-going concerns you had more fully? Did you plan to remove the tags if you no longer thought they applied?

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 08:56, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Looks like you've done some great work with that article! I especially like all of the relevant references that you've added to prove the subject's notability. When it comes to tags like the ones I added to that article, you don't have to consult with an administrator or whoever placed them in order to remove them. All you have to do is make sure that they no longer apply, which they don't. So, in other words, I never planned on removing the tags, but since you're the one who expanded the article and added all of the references, I think you should have the honor of pulling them off of there.  :-) Cheers, and keep up the good work! I do not believe the article to be advertising the company, or giving any misleading information. Western Virginia Land Trust

You deleted Western Virginia Land Trust as A7. I didn't see the article before it was deleted, but I did a quick Google News archive search and found a number of possible references at http://news.google.com/archivesearch?q=Western+Virginia+Land+Trust&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&btnG=Search+Archives -- Eastmain (talk) 23:08, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

I did, in part because the article didn't assert the notability of the organization, which, as I'm sure you know, is different than having notability. Even though I marked it as A7, it would have also qualified for speedy deletion under G11, as it has repeated creations by User:Wvlt. They may be a tax-exempt non-profit, but they aren't exempt from our policies on COI and spam. Let me know if you have any other questions! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 13:08, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Block of User:Gregory Welteroth Advertising

I am not going to revert your block of User:Gregory Welteroth Advertising, but except for the objectionable name, can you please point out any spam edits they engaged in? I have looked at all of their contribtions and they look like a typical newbie, making small edits that are not vandalism, but also not spam. If they changed their name, would you unblock? Just curious, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:23, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

The objectionable name in this case I think is special, because it is a full business name, not just an abbreviation, etc. like a lot of the spam usernames that show up at UAA are. Simply allowing this user to make edits, to me, constitutes spamming on their part, as it puts that full company name in edit logs wherever the user goes. I chose to make the block because UberScienceNerd left a {{uw-username}} message on their page about 24 hours ago and it elicited no response. 24-hours felt like a sufficient amount of time to wait to see if the user would respond, especially since he/she has made edits since the message was placed. Since there was no response, I felt that a block was warranted, even though none of the users edits were spammy. I've got no problem with him/her changing their username at all; whether we encourage him/her to do it, which has already been tried, or force him/her to, as I did today. If he/she does decide to communicate on their talkpage, unblocking is just fine if they immediately head to RFCU. Hope this clears things up. Cheers! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 20:34, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
OK, I misunderstood and thought there were edits I had missed that were spammy in and of themselves. Thanks for the clarification - I had added a welcomeg template to the page and had not thought about the Username. Will add such to my list of things to warn about. Take care, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:37, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Autoblock....

FYI, I appear to be autoblocked as coming through 192.55.52.11, which is an Intel corporate proxy server. I have no doubt the original block for the author was appropriate, but if you'd prefer to keep an entire major corporation blocked, can I please have the "evade blocks" flag added to my account? Thanks. Jclemens (talk) 02:08, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Update: Another admin has unblocked the IP. If you have any additional issues with users from that proxy, feel free to contact me and I'll put you in touch with the right people to help. Jclemens (talk) 03:44, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Sorry about that! I had no idea that the address was registered to Intel. I have placed a shared IP tag on the talk page so the same mistake won't happen again. Thanks for alerting me! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 12:47, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
No problem--there's bound to be an opinionated edit warrior or two around here, given how many type A personalities we have. :-) Thanks! Jclemens (talk) 14:53, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Hmm. Looks like your block caught more than just that one proxy. I'm going to be seeing WHICH of our Intel proxies the offending edit warrior had used--it's up to at least three so far. Jclemens (talk) 21:41, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Wow, no kidding? If there's anything I can do to help, let me know! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 22:55, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
I'm not too pleased with him, of course, but I realize that since the proxies weren't tracked as proxies, there's nothing you should have done differently. Can you see which IP addresses of his were blocked? If so, any of them that are registered to Intel corporation will most likely be corporate proxies. Not being an admin myself, I've no experience with the tools, and no idea how to figure out how to make things right by tagging the other proxies so his potential future misdeeds (I see he's been blocked thrice now) won't screw up the other 100k users who have access to those proxies. Jclemens (talk) 23:50, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
No, I can't see the IP addresses that he's using, unfortunately. If you can get me a list of intel proxies, I'll be happy to go ahead and tag them all for you. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 15:05, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
Don't worry about it. I'll keep tagging them as I find them blocked--THAT I don't need admin tools to do. Jclemens (talk) 16:12, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Gonbal2

Hello Ioeth! Sorry for my delay in replying. There are many editors (not counting anon users) that strike me as possible sockpuppets of Gonbal2 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log). If they are not, them most of them are certainly sockpuppets of each other. They are:

They mainly seem to edit (most tim es only edit) in Spanish people, Hispanic and Latino Americans, Latino (demonym), Template:Hispanic and Latino Americans, List of Hispanic and Latino Americans, and Latino. Can you check it? Thanks and cheers! The Ogre (talk) 16:41, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

User:Kman543210 says:

"I am pretty sure that all the following are sockpuppets of the same user:

As for User:Gonbal2, I don't think it's a sockpuppet of the above users because the main thing that user edits is Spanish people by adding in the CIA Factbook definition. I don't think User:Wikfanzine is a sockpuppet of the ones listed above because that user put on the Talk:Latino (demonym) page that Europeans are not Latinos, but the above editors kept trying to introduce that Hispanic and Latinos were of any Romance-speaking background. It's possible that User:Littlejimmie is a sockpuppet of User:Wikfanzine, as he was removing Spanish Americans from Template:Hispanic and Latino Americans. In August, there was a user that kept trying to removed Spanish Americans from Template:Hispanic and Latino Americans, but I can't remember who that was. I don't know how to report sockpuppets because it's hard to tell which one is the main account." Cheers! The Ogre (talk) 17:49, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

User:Bigboymark

I think a spamblock here was a little extreme. Apparently I had declined the name at the same time you were blocking it, see here for my reasoning. Making a vanity page about yourself in your own userspace shouldn't be a blockable offense. I understand your reasoning somewhat, and I understand this user hasn't done anything here else besides creating his userpage a while back, but he isn't actually harming the encyclopedia. I think a more appropriate course of action would have been to take the pages to MfD and/or leave the user a polite note about what Wikipedia is all about case he returns. Take care. --Bongwarrior (talk) 19:49, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Hey Bongwarrior, thanks for dropping me a message. I decided to spamblock User:Bigboymark because to me, the userpage seemed to be an advertisement for him and his (after Googling) gay porn DVDs. Also, the website www.bigboymark.com seems to have linked to the userpage as some sort of a "reference" (see About and Career pages). In other words, "Bigboymark" appears to me to be more than just a nickname; it's more of a trademark of his. I won't block for vanity pages, but this one crossed the line from vanity to advertisement, to me. What are your thoughts? Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 20:00, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
Oops. I was 100% completely wrong here, and you were absolutely right. I didn't know about all the off-wiki stuff. My apologies, and I'm sorry I doubted you. --Bongwarrior (talk) 20:44, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
No need to apologise! I've made mistakes in the past and will probably have my fair share of them in the future. Better to ask for a second look when in doubt than have an un-needed block stand. Cheers! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 20:54, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Tildes in warning templates?

Sorry to bug you again (see above and 'nit's). I saw someone drop a template on User talk:Ksthultz15 and wondered chiefly why they hadn't signed the warning. Looked and saw no 'subst' either, but wondered at the inclusion of signing tildes in the text of the template itself. Looked for who/why and found this. Umm, still left with why.

If you wanted to reinforce that template droppers should sign, put that into the instructions below the template? (Actually it does provide a way to sign as the 4th parameter?) But as it is, it might look to the droppers like magic will happen and the post will automatically be signed? (And nobody checks a simple warning using "Show preview" (cept me because I mess it up so often)). I see your explanatory comment, but that just makes me want to go fix that other template. Any ideas to help unconfuse me? (My favorite (sigh) template is Template:Uw-vandalism1 - nice and uncomplicated) Shenme (talk) 04:47, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Trying to answer my own question... Found this change: "(this needs a inline sig for the box formatting to work)". Er, huh? I checked before and after and can see no difference... now. And that may be the key, as maybe there was a display bug back 1.5 years ago? (Which reminds me somebody pointed me at a note explaining a display bug - need to read that and then warp an article so it looks right) Anyway, could the tildes be unneeded, umm, now? User talk:Qwerspam

Just letting you know, this user you blocked is currently requesting unblocking. – Luna Santin (talk) 20:07, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Luna Santin! Thanks for letting me know. I was hoping to get some more eyes on the situation. I asked Daniel Case to have a look at the unblock request since he originally tried to contact the user when the report was placed on WP:UAA over a week ago. The reason I ultimately chose to issue a block, even though the editor had good contributions, is because to me the username fell into two grey areas: the "spam" one, of course, and as FisherQueen pointed out, it could be interpreted in a potentially disruptive way. I have no strong feelings any one way or the other about unblock, other than the user hasn't really presented a good reason to continue using the name. I will say that I have, for some reason, a sneaking suspicion that the user may be a sockpuppet, given the familiarity with Wiki-procedure; not that it matters at this point, though. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 21:21, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
I've asked for a review of the name at WP:RFCN. Best,  Sandstein  22:25, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
Suffice it to say that I disagree about the username, but appreciate your attentiveness all the same. :) I'd give it even money, either way, on your other suspicion, but would rather wait and see what turns up on that front. – Luna Santin (talk) 22:36, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
I was commenting at the RFCN and decided I _shouldn't_ keep this comment. But I think it has a small bit of validity which may help give pause the next time?
Heck I could look at a certain user name cross-wise and think "Ooo, a self-described curser! That would offend people..."
People look entirely too closely at nits and don't want to let time work its magic. Please judge actions (edits) more closely than anything else. (And I beg pardon if this block was really a nit in all your edits combined) Shenme (talk) 01:11, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
I've added a note at WP:RFCN that you'd already unblocked 23 hours before my rant. I think I'll take a siesta like yourself? Shenme (talk) 23:27, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

collegewikis deleted

Hello Loeth,

I recently submitted an article on the website Collegewikis.com. I was informed that it was deleted because it was "blatant advertising", while I understand that an article of such nature obviously brings attention to the site about which they are written, I believe the article was more informative and fact based than promotional. I also am respectfully curious as to why this same theory does not appy to other entries such as facebook or Wiggio which are similar sites.

Lafst (talk) 18:51, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Lafst, sorry about deleting that article. When I went and took a look at it after you posted this message, I saw that the external links and references were not set up correctly, which is what prompted me to delete it. Without those, I'm sure you can agree that it would look like an advertising article. I've gone ahead and restored the article and fixed the references and external links section. Thank you for your contributions! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 18:56, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Deleted page

Hello, I'm really not trying to come across rude here at all so hope you dont see it that way, but i was wondering if you could explain properly the reasons that the article 'Wiki Races', that i put up last night was removed within about two minutes of it being part of wikipedia? I could understand it if the page was in reference to something completely false, but for a subject that i know is honest and harmless i cannot see any logical reason for this. I think with the subject 'wiki races' even if it is not a recognised game/sport/pastime, it is still played across the UK in colleges as i have made reference to in my article, and you can see this because if you type into google "wikipedia races" there are many internet chat blogs that have people discussing the topic. I would appreciate it if you could get back to me or alternatively if you cannot help, tell me who i should really be taking this up with. Thankyou CJay91 (talk) 17:22, 16 October 2008 (UTC)CJay91

Thanks for writing me a message, CJay91. I know that your contribution was an honest and harmless attempt to contribute to Wikipedia, which is why I left you a welcome message on your talk page instead of a warning. The reason that I deleted the article was because it did not assert the notability of the subject, nor did it provide adequate references for verification. Wikipedia actually has policies that cover these things, which you should definitely take a look at: notability policy, reliable sources guideline, verifiability policy, and citing sources. Let me know if you have any other questions! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 17:33, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello, I personally did not create/add to the page. I placed a db-spam flag on the page, and saw that it had been removed by the original author. Thacher Proffitt

OK, you used the big hammer and set an indef block. I was about to do some milder things, like put a {{subst:uw-spam1|Troubled Assets Relief Program}} notice on the Thacher Proffitt (talk · contribs) talk page, and had put a notice on the COI notice board. You're right, though; they had just spammed Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 too. I suspect it's a PR firm doing this; the same links appear on MarketWatch and other press release outlets. --John Nagle (talk) 19:28, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, the name popped up on WP:UAA, so I went through their contribs and while they had a few edits that looked good, most of their edits dealt with spamming links to tpw.com, so I figured between that and the username, an indef block was fully justified. Hope I didn't cause too much extra work for ya! Cheers! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 19:33, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
Ah. I don't watch WP:UAA. Based on that, a block was entirely appropriate. I started several of the bailout-related articles, and I've been trying to put solidly cited info in there. Those articles are now headed in good directions; plenty of solid cites, and few rants. I myself run "Downside.com", so I spend a fair amount of time looking at this subject. No big deal. We had much worse problems a few weeks ago, when some mortgage-workout guy in LA was putting his name into relevant articles, then screaming on AN/I when he was reverted. --John Nagle (talk) 21:03, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for checking with me, but those admins did the correct action. If you check the deletion log the reason for deletion prior was copyright issues. Heh, I feel your pain! I was thinking about doing this earlier in the week since I use the blocking templates more than anything else. I'll take a look at it and see what I can do! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 14:35, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
Awesome =) Feel free to use my version in the meantime, but I haven't updated with your new changes yet. –xeno (talk) 14:38, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
Done! Let me know if you need any help setting it up.  :-) Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 14:51, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
Xeno, I added another new configuration parameter (doc) to twinklewarn.js called "blankTalkpageOnIndefBlock". It defaults to false, but if you set it to true, it will blank a user's talk page before issuing an indef block notice per WP:UW. I thought you might like that one too! Also, if you want, I can delete your custom twinklewarn.js under U1 for you since you're no longer using it.
Cool, I'll check it out. don't worry about deleting the custom version just yet, there's still some folks that are using it. I'll delete it after I bring them up to speed on the new config option. –xeno (talk) 15:56, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Re:Jefftheallmighty

Hello Matt. I was surfing Wikipedia and came across this strange article. Looking at the history, it appears to be someone's user page that's been redirected to the article namespace. You've attempted to move it back to user namespace at least twice. Well, it's back in the article namespace. I'd make the move back to user namespace myself, but being a newbie (created my account just yesterday), I'm not sure how to do it. Just thought I would give you a heads-up. I hope I've done this correctly. Thanks. Jim. JimVC3 (talk) 21:34, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

Hostel8 - removal from Wiki

You kindly removed my hostel8 page from wiki. The sole reason I put it there was to promote the historical building it is located in. There was not a single word mentioned about: pricing, promotions, high or low seasons. Not even a word about the facilities, features, booking options. Just plain info about the building character and it's surroundings. But... ok. I can leave without it. But why don't you go further? Please feel free to remove: Coca Cola, Cafe del Mar, C&A, Enron, Nike, Adidas, British American Tobacco, e.t.c. (if you get my meaning) :)

Thanks!

Ioeth, many thanks for the message on my talk page. I am honoured that you think I am worthy of nomination as an admin. The year-end (which is fast approaching) is a very busy time of year for me so I would not be able to dedicate the time required to participate in the RFA process until early in 2009. Can we get back together on this sometime in January? Thanks again. – ukexpat (talk) 20:21, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Sure thing! Whenever you feel that you have the time, please let me know and I'll be happy to write up a nomination. Until then, keep up the good work! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 20:22, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Columns

"div class="references-small" style="-moz-column-count:2; column-count:2;" and "reflist|2" no longer is parsing text into two equal columns. Its been that way for a few weeks. Can you peek to see if they are using a common subroutine to parse text in half? Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but something changed. See here for an example. I think it may be counting hidden text as part of the count to see where to divide in half. If you know of someone else more involved in templates, let me know. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 20:44, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

It's displaying fine in Firefox, so it looks like it might be an issue with Internet Explorer. I'm not too adept at figuring out how to get good HTML to work in IE (since it's not very good at rendering correctly), so you might want to get someone else involved. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 20:46, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Nevermind. According to Template:Reflist#Browser support, IE just doesn't support the 2-column layout. Sorry! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 20:47, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

I am in Firefox! If the example above is rendering into two even columns for you, then there is something wrong in my preferences, can you check the example again? --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 21:06, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

User names?

Not real sure what you want me to do. I don't see any obvious problem, and I'm not an admin. If you have concerns, you could bring them to WP:ANI. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 02:28, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Are you talking about User:The Baseball Bugs? That's just one of this week's sockpuppets of the banned User:Ron liebman. I usually have User:Wknight94 take care of those, unless someone beats him to it. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 14:34, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Assistance request

Hate to bother you, but I'm running into further problems over at Janelle Pierzina with cited text being removed without explanation or discussion. It's from an anonymous user whose IP address differs from that used previously, although both address are from Comcast in the Dallas area. If you can investigate and let me know on my talk page how to proceed it would be appreciated. BaldPete (talk) 22:59, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

 • I would inform you that HairyHannah is back after one month on the bench, and has once again been following the edit pattern of the IP editors previously involved in edit warring on both the Pierzina and the Will Kirby articles. You have already tagged HairyHannah as a suspected sockpuppet: I was wondering if I should request WP:CHECKUSER to support a permanent block? Ohconfucius (talk) 05:25, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
 • Never mind, HairyHannah got permanently blocked. Ohconfucius (talk) 08:59, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Twinkle question

Passing this on per suggestion of SchuminWeb. There is a date/time issue that has come up and is being discussed on the Wikipedia talk:Miscellany for deletionCategory page. Is there something wrong with "Sasha" as a signature? Sodin (talk) 20:43, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Yes, it implies that your username is "Sasha" when it is actually "Sodin". If you want "Sasha" to be your username, you can put in a request to change or usurp it. Also, the signature did not contain a link to your talk page and did not contain the UTC datestamp, both of which are highly recommended by WP:SIG. In the case of this page, the bot that archives old threads gets messed up when it finds signatures that don't have the UTC datestamp, which prompted me to remind you to use ~~~~ to sign your posts. You can customize your signature in your preferences, and WP:SIG has instructions on how to do that. Let me know if you have any questions or need any help! Wiki Article needs expanding

Hi Loeth, Noticed your interest in music, specifically a page on Liz Myers in Wikipedia that needs expanding. Being a stub article is a bit distressing. Possible help: The photo is mine. How do I release it for use on wikipedia? Also, I can put more info about the album Le Rendez-vous. Can you steer me in the right direction to do this? Not sure if I have stumbled upon the best manner of contribution. Thanks, Sadapter 18 Nov 2008 Sadapter (talk) 17:16, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello Sadapter, and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm excited about your interest in contributing, especially to the Liz Myers article. First off, are you saying that you are the copyright holder of the cover of Les Rendez-vous, Image:LizMyers.jpg? If so, I can definitely help you out with the licensing. You can and are encouraged to add information to articles, as long as they conform with Wikipedia policies, especially the ones in the welcome message I left on your talk page. Other than that, just head over to the editing introduction to get the basics. let me know if you have any more questions! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 17:33, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Reverting Application Portfolio Management

Hi Matt, There seem to be some users completely messing up the Application Portfolio Management page. This started today and I agree with your removal of the latest change by Bekesg. But I think to be correct, the page should revert back to what it has been for the last several months, without anyone complaining... It seems it all started today, for whatever reason. But the page does contain references to vendors as it is now (Borland, Microsoft - why can those be referenced but not IBM or Microfocus or whoever?). I haven't seen any changes that offended the spirit of Wiki..

Thanks in advance. Andreaskopp (talk) 20:51, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Piotrus second arbcom

Hi,

since the evidence used for the Digwuren restriction that you placed me on is being reused in another arbcom (see [this, and this, (where it seems it merits a 1 year ban), would you mind answering 2 questions.

What is your position on double jeopardy?

If it goes through in Piotrus 2, would that mean that you will automatically remove my name from the Digwuren arbitration list?--Stor stark7 Speak 09:47, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello Stor stark7. I've reviewed the page you linked to and a few others. In the case of double jeopardy, if the behavior had completely stopped after you were placed on the restriction, it would seem unfair to propose a ban based on the same evidence. Now, I don't want words to be put into my mouth, so I'm going to try to be very clear with this. If the only evidence presented in the Piotrus 2 case was the same that I used in my decision to place you on the Digwuren restriction list, it would be double jeopardy. In this case, though, I don't believe it is. ArbCom cases usually attempt to identify patterns of behavior by illustrating isolated incidents and linking them together over time. It is not double jeopardy to use the evidence of the incidents that I reviewed before placing you on the Digwuren list along with other evidence before and after in that way. You were placed on the restriction for some, what should have been, isolated incidents. If you recieve a 1 year ban from this ArbCom case, you should understand that it is, rather, for a pattern of behavior that the community and arbitrators have deemed inappropriate that encompasses the Digwuren list evidence but is not limited to it. In other words, I think double jeopardy is wrong, but this is not double jeopardy and being placed on the Digwuren list does not absolve you of your behavior before or after 4 January 2008. And no, your name will not be removed from the Digwuren list. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 14:04, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
I thank you for taking the time to respond. Let me note that the January 4 diffs indeed, as you so rightly point out, were not the only diffs used for the proposed FoF. They also include for example a diff of some random guy who didn't like one of the articles I'd created making a comment on my "viewpoints", and some other assertions, some of which were analyzed here. But never mind, since the Arbitrator didn't feel it relevant enough to discriminate between diffs and comment on each used by him as evidence I guess I'll never reach clarity on this point. I thank you again for replying. --Stor stark7 Speak 16:44, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

RE: Stop requesting rollback (for now)

Although ive been contributing for less time than some others, i have noticed how they have managed around 200 edits over several months, whereas i have 250 edits for just this month.

I can understand they maybe i dont have the experience required, but in all honesty i fail to see what i am lacking. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kirachinmoku (talkcontribs) 20:29, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Although this has been explained to you before, I'll explain it again. Rollback is granted to users who have experience and that's based on both your edit count, of which you have many, and the amount of time you've been active. You only have 4 edits before 2 days ago. You need more experience in the form of time, not necessarily edits. Your work is good, and I hope you keep it up, but you should give it a solid month of reverting without rollback privilege before you request it again because your continued requests are becoming disruptive. There are other ways of cleaning up vandalism, such as Twinkle. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 20:51, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for clearing that up for me, in actual fact it wasent explained to me in depth and so i was no aware that it is based on time and count rather than just one. As per your segestion, i will keep going and we'll see what happens in around a months time. Many thanks for you help. Kirachinmoku (talk) 22:57, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

IPs can remove warnings from their talk pages

Concerning your reversion, please be aware that all users (including IPs) are allowed to remove warnings from their own talk pages. See here. It's annoying as hell for other editors, who are then forced to investigate the history, but it's allowed. -kotra (talk) 21:44, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Article Survival

Hello Ioeth, I believe my article was deleted and I was curious how I could avoid this from happening in the future. I am trying to create an entry for a company/concept called 'Zingo Transportation.' My article might've been deleted due to an advertising bylaw and I definitely don't want to violate any terms/agreements. The concept of Zingo Transportation is that after a night of drinking, you are driven home in your own car by a driver who puts the motorbike in the trunk of your car, and then drives the motorbike to the next customer. Please advise on how I may clean up the article to have it be 'wiki-ready.' Much thanks, Dan. —Preceding unsigned comment added by DLRegen (talkcontribs) 20:47, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Rollback Permissions

Dear Ioeth,
I have alerted EricV89 of the declined Rollback request. Do you think it was helpful for me to add "Admins, please note Here (Sorry, it is under the subsection "Rollback abuse?") where this user's rollbacking rights was reverted" and should I keep doing it, or should I mind my own business and keep out? It's definitely helpful to add information like that. You can even use the {{clerknote}} or {{takenote}} template to better define it. Cheers! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 16:24, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

  The RfA Barnstar
Ioeth, I would like to thank you for your participation in my recent Request for Adminship, which passed with 112 supports, 4 opposes and 5 neutrals. A special mention goes out to Stwalkerster and Pedro for nominating me, thanks a lot for having trust in me! In response to the neutrals, I will try to double check articles that have been tagged for speedy deletion before I CSD them and will start off slowly with the drama boards of ANI and AN to ensure that I get used to them. In response to the oppose !votes on my RfA, I will check that any images I use meet the non-free content criteria and will attempt to handle any disputes or queries as well as I can. If you need my help at all, feel free to simply ask at my talk page and I'll see if I can help. Once again, thank you for your participation, and have a great day! :) The Helpful One 22:17, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
