Central City

Saw your recent additions to Central City, Nebraska. Nice to see them—we need more editors working on Nebraska history.

I notice that you've added a somewhat lengthy passage on the conflict between the Skidi and the southern Pawnees. Is this really Central City-related? As I remember George Hyde's account, the initial attack by the Skidi on the Chaui took place along Prairie Creek, which is well to the north of CC (and per Hyde, it wasn't unprovoked: upon the arrival of the southern bands in Nebraska, the Skidi agreed to let them remain as long as they stayed south of the Platte, and the Chaui hunt along Prairie Creek was a fairly clear provocation); then the retaliatory attack on the Skidis took place along the Loup, even further to the north. (Hyde's account is briefly summarized here.)

Well, the article I cite was from an account of an old Chaui man in 1875, so no doubt it is biased, but I say that up front. The claim in the article is that the Chaui lived where Central City is now, so I thought it was an interesting story to tell. And I will be adding much more over the next few weeks. I tried to rollback the edit that you tagged as vandalism and was shocked to see it marked as vandalism, making a note to myself to not use rollback unless it was vandalism, but then I saw that you had made the edit. I would categorize inserting Obama as a good faith edit, and not vandalism, despite the fact that Bo Obama (dog) would not be an appropriate article title. I am sure you will do fine. We try to be as friendly as possible to new editors who make edits like that so that they can learn and become good editors. Vandalism is deliberate swear words and deleting whole sections - it is pretty flagrant. Test edits are like adding gg to an article. By the way I think that rollback does not use the vandalism summary but just says what version and how many edits were reverted - I use it for my own edits, and I am sure I would have noticed if it did. If we go back to that IP user, I didn't know it at the time, but he/she is a problem. What should I call someone who repeatedly inserts non-good faith edits? Brazilian companies

Please stop your mass tagging of Brazilian companies for speedy deletion as spam; I've not yet found anything that amounts to pure spam, and almost none of them have any advertising issues at all. Nyttend (talk) 06:07, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

That's true of virtually everything with Wikipedia articles. Think of it this way — if you're an electricity company, are you going to be spamming the Internet by creating a page in a language spoken by almost none of your potential customers? Almost nobody in Acre speaks English, so it would be silly for Electroacre to use it for an advertisement. Between many different problems, including that, I have no reason to see any of these taggings as justified. I just saw your AfD for Eletrobras, one of the largest power companies in the world. I think you're making a big mistake by nominating dozens of articles for deletion in one quick session. I don't disagree that some of the companies are large, but everywhere I read on Wikipedia that there has to be third-party independent references. And many of these articles have been created by at least one blocked user for spamming. I'm not going to do this anymore, but I don't think anyone or any company should be above the standards just because they are big or notable. That seems to me to be all the more reason to demand that articles about them meet the standards.--I am One of Many (talk) 07:14, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Kindly stop rearranging the citations at Lone Tree Monument. Having multiple citations for the same piece of text is harmful because it makes it harder to attribute each fact to a different source. As well, we must provide page numbers for every citation to a book or other multi-page document; a citation is not verifiable otherwise. If no single source cover everything, then place each citation after the piece that it verifies. Moreover, you added information that was not in the single source that you provided for the section. I am not a vindicative man, I only wanted to show you how easy it is to add (or remove) a tag. And by the way, many companies you prodded are listed on major stock exchanges. You could have used some judgement, but you were too keen to use Twinkle to have fun at the expense of other editors. If these articles do not have sources (you prodded Holcim, which has a couple by the way), they may stay as stubs, you could have added a {{sources}} template. NRHP in Merrick County

Just found your recently-created articles on NRHP sites in Merrick County, viz., Patterson Law Office, Cahow Barber Shop, and Wright Morris Boyhood House, in addition to Merrick Co. Courthouse. Nice work! I'll touch them up a bit, but in the main they look like worthy additions to Wikipedia.

If you're going to do articles on other NRHP sites in Merrick Co. or elsewhere, could I suggest that you start talk pages, adding the articles to WikiProjects Nebraska and National Register of Historic Places? I've done so at the four articles already mentioned; all you'd need to do is cut and paste the WikiProject templates from one of them. (Almost all of the NRHP articles are rated as low-importance—this is no reflection on Merrick County, or on the quality of the article. I prefer to let other editors rate them and fill in the "class=" parameters, since we've got editors who specialize in that sort of thing and whose ratings are likely to be consistent.)

Also, you might want to add new NRHP articles to the list at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places. You can get there by clicking the WikiProject link on the talk page. Edit the "New articles and pictures" section, placing new articles at the top of the current month's list. That will (a) let other editors interested in NRHP subjects know about your articles, so that they can work on them; and (b) give you an opportunity of bragging about your new articles to others who're interested in the subject. This is one of the most active WikiProjects out there; you might consider joining it if you're going to work on NRHP-related subjects. I've added your new articles to the December 2012 list, with notes giving you as the creator; don't add such a note yourself—I only did it because someone looking at the edit summary might mistake me for the creator, and I don't want to steal your credit.

Thank you for your help! I will do all these things you recommend. I think that I'll finish up the NRHP sites in Merrick County and then in a less systematic way, I'll work on NRHP sites in other counties. I see that this task has been made incredibly more easy than it might have been if you hadn't traveled all over the state taking such nice photos of these sites. I actually didn't join Wikipedia to do this, but when I visited the Central City page (I grew up on a farm close to Central City, but now live in California), I wondered where all the history was, so I started to add it. I was surprised how little I knew. Now, I'm interested in helping to fill out (very slowly) the history of Nebraska. The Palms Lakeshore Pampanga

In my mind, there are two reasons to have text and an external link — (1) external link is meant to help those who read the text, which is fine; or (2) text is meant to drive traffic to the external link, which is speedy deleteable. I declined it because I got the impression that this was more of a reason #1 situation, and such a large development is big enough to avoid an A7 speedy deletion, but I'll not object if you PROD or take it to AFD for lack of notability. Please don't use proposed deletion for articles such as these. An article of that quality with 11 sources should tip you off that PROD isn't appropriate. Mormon Trail marker

I don't see a problem with the photo of the Mormon Trail marker. The thing I fixed with my edit was the Wikilink to a page that didn't exist and was unlikely ever to be created (since we've got a Mormon Trail article already, and since the historical marker near Central City doesn't itself meet notability standards). There's a policy concerning that at WP:REDLINK that states, in effect: it's OK to insert a redlink if the article's likely to be created (thus all the redlinks, for instance, on the NRHP lists); but if the article's not likely to be created, it shouldn't be Wikilinked. Nebraska ghost towns

Interesting idea, but it might be difficult to come up with adequate documentation for an article. The Historic Building Surveys (like the one you cite for Merrick Co) would be one place to start. You might also check the county entries at Andreas's History of the State of Nebraska: it was written in 1882, when many of the now-ghost towns were still going concerns. However, I suspect that for many, you'd have little more than a name and a location.

You mention near-ghost towns like Worms and Havens. It might be better to try to work on some articles on unincorporated communities like that, where there's still have some population, rather than pure ghost towns whose sites are now cornfields. I've done a few of those—Berea, Lindy, and Tamora—but there are plenty left. There might well be census data for some of them, they're more likely to show up in the historic-building surveys, and if nothing else you might be able to find an explanation of the name in something like Perkey's Nebraska Place Names or Lilian Linder Fitzpatrick's 1925 "Nebraska Place-Names".

If you launch an article and don't have a photo for it, add the template {{reqphoto|in=Nebraska}} on the talk page, and it'll show up in Category:Wikipedia_requested_photographs_in_Nebraska. You might also leave a note at my talk page; I'll try to get photos when I'm next in the right part of the state.

Also, if you start a new article on an unincorporated community, you might want to add it to the county template (the "Municipalities and communities of X County, Nebraska" business that appears near the bottom of articles on towns).

Congratulations! It took me over a year before somebody vandalized my userpage, and I had to revert his repeated vandalism of an article something like half a dozen times before he got mad enough to do it.

NRHP and private ownership

I see that you've recently added a note to several of your NRHP-in-Merrick-Co articles regarding the fact that NRHP listing doesn't restrict owner use and development of privately-owned sites. I'm a bit perplexed as to why you've put this in, since nothing in the articles suggests that there's been any kind of controversy over this at the sites in question. Rather than including in each article a note on the advantages and disadvantages of NRHP listing, a note that could wind up overwhelming the rest of the article, wouldn't it be better to place this information at the main National Register of Historic Places article (if it isn't there already)? I agree that I could have used a nicer tone, but the fact is that the article had become un-understandable. Whether one agrees or disagrees with a practice or field, an article cannot start with an unexplained list of assumptions or hypotheses, with unexplained and unlinked technical terms that are claimed to be self-contradictory. I think that rather than merely reverting my rollback, you should have worked to make the article more intelligible. I see now it's (Vegetotherapy) a little better than it was. First of all, thank you for welcoming me to wikipedia. I need your help with my first article. After completing my draft entitled EVFIT (Federation), I wanted to submit it for review but after editing my draft 3 times, the button to request feedback got lost. I read somewhere that if we are finished with our draft we can move it to main space. I used the move facility and ended up with my article in here:

Okay, I'm not sure what you're comparing them against, but the criteria at WP:MUSIC are more robust than you've indicated in your deletion summaries. You seem to be going through Facedown Records's catalog and nominating almost everything for deletion, but most of these groups have released two or more albums through that label, which would qualify them for inclusion under WP:MUSIC's bullet point 5. Furthermore, it looks like you're moving very quickly and not looking for sources beforehand, which is advised under WP:BEFORE. A good start is All Music Guide, which has articles and album reviews on many of these bands. Since many of these groups are Christian, Christian music publications like HM magazine, Jesus Freak Hideout, and Cross Rhythms may also have reviews, as well as secular publications like Alternative Press. Some of these will come up high in a Google search; some won't. In any case, I think you're moving way too quickly here, nominating articles which are in a poor current status but which are probably salvageable. Chubbles (talk) 22:11, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

I've got to go in just a minute, so this will be quick...there isn't really an established standard for labels; the closest thing we have to a guideline about them specifically is that WP:MUSIC point 5. If the label's been around for a while (vague, though "more than a few years" seems in practice to settle around six or eight) and has a significant roster of notable acts, it's something culturally significant enough to merit inclusion. Now, if all of the bands on the label have two releases, and aren't notable for anything else, there's a certain circularity to that reasoning; this is called a walled garden. But Facedown doesn't have that problem, because many of its groups are notable for reasons other than simply releasing a bunch of records on the label - they've gotten reviewed in magazines, done national or international tours, and even hit the Billboard charts. Lastly, Facedown could meet WP:N on its own, and the profile I added to the page that Alternative Press did on them a while back is a big step toward establishing that (press coverage of Christian independent record labels, after all, is quite rare). I agree (and am not surprised to find) that some of these articles could use some serious cleanup, and I've already taken some steps in that direction (though I do not intend to spit-shine them all; I'm busy these days...). French Montana

I don't know if you noticed the comment immediately above where you were editing on the French Montana article that reads: "Please do not alter title per WP:BEGINNING". That and MOS:BIO#Pseudonyms, stage names and common names indicate that it was correct and you changed it to an incorrect format. I restored it to the suggested form. What is your deal IAOOM?

Hey IAOOM, you just leveled a completely unwarranted and severe accusation at me on a public AFD page during the middle of a productive discussion. I would say that falls in line with severe harassment, but I don't want to level a return accusation at you without merit. What is your deal? I have never once talked to a sock puppet individual, and you can check my edit history if you would like to verify that. I have my own wonders about sock puppets seeing as how you and a few others have all decided to attack me at the exact same time, but I don't know. Please retract your harmful accusation though, because that is beyond disrespectful and patently false. I'm not an administrator, so I can't really do anything about it I guess, but that was really uncalled for simply because you don't happen to like a particular article that I contributed to since you had some past edit warring issues with editors that I have never once even heard of or ever talked to (you can view my edit history to verify that if you would like). Korean name title

Wonky

Hello, One of Many. I saw that you removed my addition of Wonky to the UK Garage list under a Dubstep sub-genre. I find this to be incorrect. Wonky has recently been associated with a new form of the Dubstep genre, along with other bass music scenes. You can read about such on the Wonky page. Rather arrogant of you, unknown human, to presume that i, a 66 year old Jewish tarot card reader who teaches classes on the subject made "unhelpful edits" to the RWS four of wands tarot card page -- you didn't even let me finish writing before you wiped my contribution away! The tarot is pretty obscure and Judaism is not a well-understood religion -- and the number of Jews familiar with Samaritan Jewish ecclesiastic festival decorations who have also written about tarot is fairly small. You may be looking at the only one (and i myself am not Samaritan but Ashkenazi; i just happen to study folklore for a living). If nothing else in that section is citation-notated, including the chuppah comment, why must *my* addition be cited under threat of deletion? It seems unfair of you to hold me to a standard to which you have held none of my forerunners on the article. In any case, i tried to help, you didn't like what i offered, and that's the end of it. I have no stake in this; i know what i know and the pictures tell the whole story. Trying to share knowledge through Wikipedia is not worth the effort of accepting gratuitous insults from strangers. Normally, if they have started something that looks like an article, I don't tag it for G11 speedy deletion, but spammers use a lot of tricks to get their advertisements up. Hi Meganjantos, sometimes people write their first article on their user page and this can be confused with spam (there are lots of spammers on Wikipedia). The best thing to do is to copy the contents of your user page and past it into your "sandbox". You can also paste this template at the very top of your sandbox:

{{Userspace draft|source=ArticleWizard|date=May 2013}}

When you write your first article, be sure to use reliable third party sources to establish Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). When you get finished, I can read it and tell if I think there are any problems.--I am One of Many (talk) 05:28, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
