Hey there

Hiya. I'm sorry that your Philippe article got reverted, but the person who did it was right. Philippe just wasn't important enough to get an article. However, there are many articles that currently exist that need work. If you'd be interested, I could give you a hand. I've been in the hurricane project for six years now, and we're always in need of writers. Lemme know! --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:42, 4 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

By the way, I removed that image you put in the Ophelia article. It broke up the paragraph unnecessarily, and it was similar (but inferior) to the image in the infobox. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:43, 4 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hey, lemme know if you get this message. You're making a lot of unnecessary articles. Generally, all of the storms since 1979 that should have articles already do, at least in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific. If you're looking for articles to write, check out WP:WPTC/R. Also, the three articles with exclamation points here need articles. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:31, 5 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Regarding Danny, you can't decide unilaterally what the writing should be in an article. If you disagree and are reverted, you should talk on the talk page. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:41, 7 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Jeffrey Gu (mind if I call you JG for short). Nice job on the Hurricane Ignacio (1979). However, the article is short and could be merged into the season article. With that said, they are many other storms are the world that can get articles, for suggestions, see WP:WPTC/R. If you want something in 1979 (in case you like the year), Hurricane Andres (1979) might have just enough info for a full-fledged article. A much better idea for an article would be Hurricane Hernan (1996) or Hurricane Doreen (1977). Outside of the East Pacific, I'd suggest looking here. Cheers and happy editing. YE Pacific Hurricane

Heads Up

Just for heads up...Only administrators can protect an article, not just regular Wikipedians. So, even if you do want Hurricane Wilma protected, you cannot do it yourself. TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 15:30, 6 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Why can only administrators protect articles? Like the article on Grand Theft Auto V is protected, but is not the very previous day. And another...How can you get rid of protection? How can you become an administrator? Jeffrey Gu (talk)

You can become an administrator by following these instructions, but you'll probably not become an admin. As for protection, you can get rid of it by requesting it here. Admins are extremely trusted users with typically thousands of edits, and months - sometimes even years - of editing. That's why they are trusted with the tools. Is Carla the 2nd or 3rd strongest storm of the 1961 Atlantic hurricane season? Jeffrey Gu (talk) 23:24, 10 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hurricane Esther had a lower pressure, but Hurricane Carla had stronger winds. HurricaneFan25 23:30, 10 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Which makes Esther the stronger of the two. TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 01:36, 11 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

WHY?!!!!WHY CAN'T WE FUCKIN' HAVE EM'?MAYBE BECAUSE IT IS NOT CLEAN?Jeffrey Gu (talk) 16:29, 12 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • No, its because Wikipedia has a set of guidelines to be followed, and if users do not follow them, they may find themselves blocked from editing. TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 16:33, 12 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
    • Yes and no, we can't have them because they are unencyclopedic. With that said, the images are not very clean (or of high-quality either), so even if they were put in the infobox, they would likely be removed. Also, may I remind you of WP:CIVIL. Please stop; if you continue you may be blocked or even sent here. I suggest you look up our polices. Thank you. YE Pacific Hurricane
      • We are not allowed them because we are not an art gallery, also i didn't swear at you or shout at you so please do not swear or shout at me or you will be blocked from editing alltogether.Jason Rees (talk) 16:59, 12 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

This is not a very good rule. Who made this rule? Is it because of safety reasons? I am not angry like Uncle Vernon who likes to yell at Harry, just frustrated why can't we add galleries. Safety reasons? And oh, did my Hurricane Eugene article get reverted? :( Jeffrey Gu (talk) 17:16, 12 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

The rule is in place because gallery's clutter pages with images and could make the prose difficult to read, so I guess part of it is due to safety reasons. And yes, Hurricane Eugene (2011) got deleted since it was poorly written. YE Pacific Hurricane

Is Hurricane Noel (2001) deleted, too? Because I remember in 2009 there's an article on Noel, but not now. And on the history page of Noel does not have any history for it.

Good question, it got converted into a different type of article.YE Pacific Hurricane

Was it a good article? If possible, tell me the location of that article that was converted into another article (For Noel only) Jeffrey Gu (talk) 17:33, 12 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes, the redirect location is November 2001 Atlantic Canada storm complex. YE Pacific Hurricane 17:56, 12 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

How can we have it back? I miss that article.Jeffrey Gu (talk) 00:19, 22 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Merged articles

Why was Tropical Storm Ingrid (2007) merged? It was a good article.Jeffrey Gu (talk) 17:36, 12 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

R.I.P article on Tropical storm Ingrid :(
I am not 100% sure, there was no discussion on talk page. It was probably due to lack of notability, but I think it should not have been merged, at least without discussion. YE Pacific Hurricane

I redid the Ingrid article. Jeffrey Gu (talk) 01:21, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

And i have reverted you since not every TC needs an article and it was merged with a discussion on the talkpage.Jason Rees (talk) 01:26, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
There was no consensus to merge on the talk page. Anyway, I suggest you work on more important articles. Thank you. YE Pacific Hurricane 03:24, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Can anyone gimme some advice of which pages I should merge? If can, put it in the column and make a link for it.

Merge:

Jeffrey Gu (talk) 14:21, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well, pages that should be merged are low-quality articles on storms that didn't do much of anything. However, since we already have that criteria, there aren't any more articles left to merge. Everything that's left is here for a reason. Some might be debatable, in which case you'd bring up a discussion on the talk page, but even that has already been done for most of the borderline ones. For the best way to improve Wikipedia, you should focus on improving existing articles, instead of creating new ones or merging. Check out a storm like Tropical Storm Allison (1989). Or, you can make sub-articles for existing retired storms on a particular area. There are still a lot of those articles that can be made, such as Effects of Hurricane Floyd in North Carolina, Effects of Hurricane Ivan in Florida, or Effects of Hurricane Ike in Louisiana. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:21, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please stop adding images to Hurricane Katrina, you just broke 3RR, and may result in losing your editing privileges. Thank you. Please do not focus on merging. Thank you. Merging has been debated here for years, but as Hurricanehink said, a better way to improve Wikipedia's coverage on tropical cyclone's is by improving existing articles. Hurricane Bonnie (1986), Hurricane Danny (1985), Hurricane Bill (2009), Hurricane Erin (1995) or Hurricane Jerry (1989) might be good options here. YE Pacific Hurricane

One more thing, why isn't Typhoon Bess (1982) edited recently? Won't anyone help me with it? I'm the only one editing that article now. Do it, or I will merge the article. Jeffrey Gu (talk) 19:51, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Not many people work on or care about the non-Atlantic basins. Article are usally edited every month or two, sometimes shorter sometimes longer. If you merge it, ill revert since Bess is clearly notable. YE Pacific Hurricane 20:02, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Jeffrey, you could always edit Bess and improve it. I'll help if you can't find any sources. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:50, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

I am going to create a page on Typhoon Ruby (1988). If possible, find me some sources for that articles. But do not put it here. Put it on the article. Jeffrey Gu (talk) 23:55, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Do all hurricane articles with notability get merged?Jeffrey Gu (talk) 23:12, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

No, any storm that is very notable will not be merged. YE Pacific Hurricane 00:02, 24 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ruby

Not a bad job on Ruby! I'm glad to see you working on a notable storm. The main problem with the article (and which no you need to address to make sure it doesn't get deleted) is that it needs sources. Where did you find the information for the article? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:32, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

If you're having trouble with sources, here is the 1988 report from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center with a compete section on Ruby. This page from the Hong Kong Observatory indicates there were four injuries in Hong Kong, and here is the same agency's yearly report. Try doing a simple Google search for info on the typhoon. It was reasonably notable, and it wasn't that long ago. Be sure everything in the article is cited, however. When you have a paragraph of information from a certain source, simply put <ref> and </ref> around that link, like this: [1]. Hope that helps! --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:37, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Won't this cause plagiarism? Jeffrey Gu (talk) 01:02, 15 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Not as long as you re-word or rephrase it and add references to credit where you got the information. HurricaneFan25 01:18, 15 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Problem is, I don't know how to. Jeffrey Gu (talk) 01:19, 15 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

You just take the information and summarize it. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:38, 15 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hi Jeffrey, I have a concern about the references you are using in the article. Wikipedia has a policy about reliable sources, and the sources brainyhistory.com, highbeam.com, and chron.com may not be reliable sources. If you have the time to do so, please read the link above. Speedy deletion nomination of File:DOUG TRACK.gif

A tag has been placed on File:DOUG TRACK.gif requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted images or text borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Articles

Hey, can you try and improve the existing articles you've made before continuing to make new ones? I'm glad you're giving attention to articles in the western Pacific, but most of the articles you've made are borderline stubs. Take Typhoon Bart (1999) for example. It's a good start, but there's much more information out there. The meteorological history should be expanded to two paragraphs using the JTWC information as well as an independent summary of the storm by Gary Padgett. Also, I'm not sure if you heard, but we have a Project resources page that has tons of links that should help expand any article. Try using Google news for some news articles on the storm. Given how recent it was, and how populated of a region it hit, you should be able to find some good info. Lastly, be sure that when you're sourcing, the reference covers all of the preceding information. In Bart's article, you mention a damage total, but the source provided doesn't mention anything about a damage total.

I'll give you a hand if you want, but I highly suggest you focus on the articles you've made so far before you make any more new ones. I'm glad to see you writing on important storms though! :) --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:06, 21 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

One more thing. The WPTC agreed that we shouldn't use knots in articles, as the public doesn't use that at all. Instead, convert it to km/h and mph (if it's outside of the NOAA basins). In addition, you shouldn't put in a "lack of retirement" section. I'm curious, why did you decide to put that in in the first place? --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:15, 21 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Again, please go back and fix up some of your previous articles before making new ones. The 1979 Canada Subtropical Storm article, in particular, probably shouldn't exist. It didn't do anything! 3 inches of rain is nothing (and, btw, that's unsourced). Also, please make sure that when you upload images, you include where you got the image from. Failure to do so could get you blocked from Wikipedia. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:45, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

What are the consequences if you, even if you are blocked, still edit from wiki? Jeffrey Gu (talk) 20:07, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Basically, that account is blocked indefinitely and your main account might either be blocked for a period of time, sometimes indefinitely. HurricaneFan25 21:59, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Edit summaries

Please stop shouting or complaining in edit summaries; this just annoys other editors. If you want to comment, just go to the article's talk page; or if you want to fix something, use a calm edit summary. HurricaneFan25 00:20, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please don't warn the regulars, like you did at User talk:Thegreatdr. IMO, there's nothing wrong with it. HurricaneFan25 13:07, 24 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

But you gave me a warning once, and I reverted your edits for 1989 Atlantic hurricane season and Hurricane Felix (1989). Felix is clearly notable because it is one of the only hurricanes ever to make landfall in Cape Verde. It is also notable for its unusual track. Jeffrey Gu (talk) 14:23, 24 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

You're not a regular yet. You're still rather new. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:33, 24 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Don't all storms with no notability get merged? (Flooding makes a tropical cyclone notable) Jeffrey Gu (talk) 21:14, 24 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

No, not automatically. It depends on the variety of sources in the article, how well-written it is, and what the storm did. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:30, 24 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Define "notability"? This subject matter has been a serous controversy in WPTC. YE Pacific Hurricane 21:34, 24 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
The word "notable" is a highly debatable subject on Wikipedia, and saying that a storm was "notable" just because it made landfall in the Cape Verde Islands or caused flooding isn't always the case. If the storm featured a high amount of damage or deaths, then of course it gets an article. However,Felix is a not a "notable" storm, and does not merit an article. TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 02:18, 25 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hurricane Hernan

Hello Jeffrey Gu, I saw that you attempted to re-create Hurricane Hernan (1996) and that is was under threat of being merged, like your other articles. Since I had a desire to create that storm, I took the liberty to "save" that article from being merged. As you can see, I greatly expanded all sections of the article, using information I found here: [2]. Finally, I would like to invite you unto our IRC channel; if you would like to join us on the IRC, go here and log-on with a nickname, and in the channels field, type #wiki-hurricanes. Right now, most of the regular editors are logged-on to the IRC channel and they may be able to give you some tips and advice about editing/creating articles in the Tropical Cyclones Project of Wikipedia. Template

You can NOT make templates like that Jeffrey Gu, that in itself could you get you blocked. Just because you don't like for a storm to get merged, that doesn't mean it isn't going to. And frankly, we're getting tired of correcting all of these mistakes you've been making to Wikipedia. TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 21:03, 25 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Then can you NOT merge anymore storm articles? Let them stay, will you? Jeffrey Gu (talk) 21:06, 25 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

You can, but not that sort of template. People bring up merge discussions, people agree on a merge, and the article is merged. There's nothing you can do about that. TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 21:14, 25 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

No, you can't decide what articles can stay or not. Jeffrey, you really have to read up on Wiki policy. You can't just make a template and say people will be blocked if an article is merged. Please see WP:NOT, WP:NOTABILITY, WP:5P, and so on. Your edits have become borderline disruptive. If you make an article, you should read the bottom of the edit window, where it says:

By clicking the "Save Page" button, you agree to the Terms of Use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL.

If you create an article and there's no chance for expansion (not to mention it's poorly written), then it will be merged or deleted. Furthermore, please don't create any new templates that suggest that people could be blocked or anything of the matter. Again, that is disruptive. If you continue such behavior, you may be blocked from editing. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:15, 25 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

I tried to make a ref, and I did it the right way, but it still says its wrong. What shall I do? Regarding this - Effects of Hurricane Felix in Nicaragua - you're not allowed to copy information from a copyrighted website. Furthermore, there is no need for an effects sub-article. I think I'm fine now. Jeffrey Gu (talk) 23:50, 28 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, but you're not getting rid of me that quickly :) Regarding the recent file you uploaded, you need to make sure you include a source. That is just as vital as adding sources to an article. And speaking of which, I really think you should go back and fix up some of your older articles. As you saw with Ida, there is plenty of information out there on most of them. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:03, 29 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
I removed that source. Nothing indicates that image was public domain or that it was from the US government. Other countries have satellite images. Regarding Pamela's article, please finish it. First, the source you provided about the retirement says nothing about Pamela being retired and replaced with Peggy. Second, there is no need for a sub-section when there is only one sentence. Third, you need to actually include impact content in the article. Again, compare how you did Typhoon Ida (1958) with how it is now. You have to do some actual research. Go on Google, use Google news, and ask for help. There is plenty of information available on Pamela. I'm glad you chose something that is more notable, however! --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:49, 29 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hurricane Gert (1993)

As much as I like to see you making good edits now, I think I'd be best to steer clear of Hurricane Gert (1993) right now, because it is a Featured Article candidate, and changing anything may make it fail. -- TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 15:15, 27 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hurricane Gil (1989)

How come you made an article on this? It faces the same problems as Ignacio (79), and it could face merging. Everything there is from the National Hurricane Center. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:25, 28 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for File:Pamela landfall Philippines 1982.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Pamela landfall Philippines 1982.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Jeffrey, you're causing a problem. You uploaded File:PAMELA DAMAGE TO SCHOOL.GIF as well, but there is no evidence the picture actually is in the public domain. I would recommend staying away from uploading images, as that can get you in trouble much more easily than editing articles. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer lyrics
 Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
 had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw him,
you would even say it glows.
 All of the other reindeer
used to laugh and call him names.
 They never let poor Rudolph
 join in any reindeer games.
 Then one foggy Christmas Eve
 Santa came to say:
"Rudolph with your nose so bright,
won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"
Then all the reindeer loved him
as they shouted out with glee,
 Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,
 you'll go down in history!

Suggestion

Hey, I have a little suggestion. Instead of writing new articles on old Pacific hurricanes (which aren't that notable and won't ever be watched by many people), have you considered working on more notable articles? Perhaps ones that currently exist but aren't of good quality? --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:07, 23 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I currently am starting an article on Olivia 1982, which caused $325 in damages, Raymond 1983, a hurricane that posed a threat large enough for preparations, and Polo 1984, which caused some deaths and damage. Are those notable? Jeffrey Gu Happy holidays! 03:10, 23 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
None of them are all that notable. Olivia is debatable, since it wasn't the storm itself that caused the damage, but rather the combination of a few storms (like October 1983 Southwest United States floods). Why not work on something that currently exists but isn't that good? That would be much more useful to the community :) --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:39, 23 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Olivia is notable, but it might be better off as a flood article. Raymond 83 did cause one death, but damage was minor. Polo is not very notable as well, for the same reason. Why don't you go and finish Norman 78? YE Pacific Hurricane 03:44, 23 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
I got a LOT of storm history info for Raymond 83'. Jeffrey Gu Happy holidays! 17:20, 23 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Jeffrey, for convenience, I have moved your sandbox to here. – TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 04:57, 29 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Regarding your block.

I had blocked your IP for 10 days because of vandalism originating from it, for which you are responsible. Your IP has been hardblocked, i.e. your account was also blocked because of its the underlying IP. This was done intentionally. In addition to the vandalism, the block is also a result of WP:COMPETENCE issues related to page protection; you had been warned multiple times but you persisted in causing disruption both at the noticeboard and article affected. Also, blocked users should not use their talkpage as a sandbox while blocked; if you do that again, I will apply the block on your main account, with talkpage access disabled.

I understand that you're a genuinely good-faith editor (except the vandalism and page-protection issues), and it is not my intention to drive you off the project. The folks at the hurricanes WikiProject are nice, helpful, and seems to be already informally mentoring you. I hope that you take their advice seriously. However, I must warn that if there are still similar issues after the block expires, it will likely result in a new one; see Wikipedia:Competence is required. Maxim(talk) 16:44, 29 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I was doing that cause' I want to know what will happen when I use multiple accounts. Jeffrey Gu|  Cyclone 17:21, 29 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Then can any admin unblock me now? I am dying to edit my user page. (Plus, I planned myself to be an admin  ) Jeffrey Gu|  Cyclone 19:09, 30 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Absolutely not. You abused your IP's editing privileges in a violation of WP:SOCK (an attempt to get a page you requested to be protected protected). You will fail an RfA because of inexperience and what I just said, in addition to not admitting you are wrong. Sorry. HurricaneFan25 — 19:19, 30 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Just for your information, I doubt i would pass an RFA, so what hope you would have is next to none.Jason Rees (talk) 19:22, 30 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
OKAY. I admit it is mine, but I did that purposely because I want to learn of what will happen if I did do WP:SOCK and WP:DIS, and I want to learn how to warn other users, and learn how to request protection, and I am totally dying to edit, mostly my user page page. Jeffrey Gu|  Cyclone 19:45, 30 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
If you really feel so, you could just follow the instructions on your block message to post an unblock request. HurricaneFan25 — 19:47, 30 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
