GA process edit

Hi G. Thanks for helping out with the GA nomination of Johannes S. Andersen, I really appreciate it as I don't really have time for much of anything myself these days. I was wondering if I could ask you yet another favour; Could you possibly get hold of Bjørnsen, Bjørn (1968). En mann kalt Gulosten. and find the answers to those questions regarding Andersen's family life? I've tried my local library, but being a tiny library they do not hold that book. As you live in more central areas of the country I thought you might have a better shot at finding it. Happy (almost) Easter, by the way. Manxruler (talk) 17:22, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • I'm always loving it when I borrow books that my local library have stashed in the cellar. Means that they're getting unexpectedly high "turnover" for that book. So yes, I'll check it out. They'll have to hold the GA review for some days, though. Geschichte (talk) 18:41, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
    • Brilliant! Thanks again. I too enjoy loaning books from the store rooms, which in my local library are upstairs, as they don't really have a cellar. Manxruler (talk) 19:36, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
      • You found the biography, I see. Excellent, thanks a bunch. Very good to have more info on the Bergstrøm marriage. Any info on the first marriage that hasn't yet been added? Manxruler (talk) 19:04, 28 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
        • Very well done. Well... Hmm... It says his marriage was dissolved in 1931, so I suppose they could have been separated for all that time. Although I would guess that it would have been easier to get a divorce from a frequently imprisoned career criminal. Manxruler (talk) 20:08, 31 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
          • ^Laughs^. Well, no one can say "Gulosten" wasn't colourful. Do add that, it completes the picture. Brilliant. Manxruler (talk) 20:37, 31 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
            • Ah, well, if Bjørnsen doesn't give proper dates, then there's nothing to do about that. Good stuff anyway. Manxruler (talk) 21:18, 31 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

That's cool. I'm not writing too well today anyway. Yes, it is very strange. Krigens dagbok not only makes no mention of Alf Larsen, but says that there were only three saboteurs that carried out the operation: Knut Haukelid as the main saboteur, and Rolf Sørli and Knut Lier-Hansen assisting him. No Alf Larsen is mentioned. Odd. Don't know what to make of that.

While on the subject of sabotage, as far I remember Lysaker bridge wasn't destroyed in the sabotage operation against it, only damaged. Krigens dagbok says the three young men tried to blow the bridge up. Also, wouldn't it make for a nice hook to mention that this was the first ever sabotage action against the Germans in Norway after their invasion? Manxruler (talk) 21:02, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • I have requested Krigens dagbok and will pick it up today. The other sources I've seen so far are extremely vague about what happened - even what bridge this was (at present there are four bridges by the river mouth, one railway, one highway and two local road). NKL says "sprengning av Oslos utfartvei mot vest", which can be interpreted like the bridge was actually blown apart, but the same entry says that "som sprengning var den lite vellykket". I've also requested Oluf Reed-Olsen's book Contact, so I hope to get more details from that; it's a primary source though. Geschichte (talk) 09:30, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
    • I messed up, I should have requested Reed-Olsen's book Vi kommer igjen, not Contact. But in quoting Reed-Olsen, Lars Borgersrud (1981) wrote that the bridge was blown "i lufta". Also I have En mann kalt Gulosten now. Geschichte (talk) 09:58, 28 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I knew that Reed-Olsen sounded familiar, got the book in my personal library. Manxruler (talk) 15:55, 29 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
        • Hi G. Got Vi kommer igjen yet, or should I take a break from my break and add the info? Manxruler (talk) 14:21, 31 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
          • I got it, but I'm still reading Bjørnsen 1968 in addition to many other things. Geschichte (talk) 14:39, 31 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
            • I'll see if I can take of it later today. Happy Easter, by the way. Manxruler (talk) 14:49, 31 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
              • I wanted to drop you a note that I promoted the article to GA status, I hope you continue to expand the article but good job on all the work. --Kumioko (talk) 16:07, 1 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
                • Couldn't have happened without you, G. Thanks! Manxruler (talk) 16:49, 1 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
    • Thanks. :) I do hope you take credit for it too. Yep, will return to my break and back to my thesis pretty soon. I do have good hopes for the thesis, I do enjoy my subject. Going to be good to be done with it too, though, and start actually having free time after work. Manxruler (talk) 21:41, 1 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

template edit

I've created a Norwegian version of the American national convention template. I've included it in the 1994 Progress Party national convention, but you should probably take a look at the template, seeing that i don't think its that good. --TIAYN (talk) 09:01, 31 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

--TIAYN (talk) 17:10, 7 April 2010 (UTC)=== Hippe related === Fixed, changed it "He is a close associate of Ivar Hippe", is that better? --TIAYN (talk) 12:20, 7 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Removed it, will re-add it when i find a "detailed" reference for it :P
What is wrong with the source which claims that Ola Hippe is the father of I. and J. Hippe? --TIAYN (talk) 16:01, 7 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Because nothing in it mentions Ivar or Jon. Jon wasn't even born, how can you possibly think that that's an adequate source? Geschichte (talk) 16:14, 7 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
The article mentions he is a father, doesn't mention the name i know, but i know seeing' that i knew Ola and know I. Hippe. But i guess i should remove it, seeing that it does not qualify for WP standards. --TIAYN (talk) 17:10, 7 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2010 March newsletter edit

We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly.   Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B.   TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is. Several WikiCup contestants and judges have already signed up, but regular reviewers and those who hope to do more reviewing are more than welcome to join at the drive page. If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi! You wrote: "I'm not a chess expert but I'd say that a sportsperson of this type would at least have to compete internationally to be notable, for instance in the Chess Olympiad which started during his career. I don't see that this person has." I would like to say, that, as a member of the WikiProject Chess, I have written hundreds of pages (articles or stubs) on chess players, who are notable, for example as national chess champions (see, [[1]], please.). By the way, Egil Jacobsen won twice the Danish Chess Championship. So, I do not understand your objection. -- Mibelz (talk) 16:54, 1 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi mate, I probably should clear something up here. I havn't really left, just migrated to a different account. My main reason was that I was a little concerned about my username being made up of my initials and my birthdate, a combination that didn't seem to be the smartest choice in retrospect. I also got the shits with editing football (soccer) articles. Therefore I migrated to an account I created a couple of month before, while on holiday in Darwin. Over time, I let a few people here know about this, when they tried to contact me on my old account. Hope this helps keeping your records, and hope, I havn't broken some weird Wikipedia law, Calistemon (talk) 00:29, 12 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ibsen quotes, Oslo edit

Hello Geschichte, I included the following comments on the article's talk page:

  • This interesting article includes references from the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten which are in fact accessible on line. For example here. As the author is a Master Editor, I wondered if there was a specific reason for this, for example the threat of spam from the website, unreliability or simply the fact that the articles are in Norwegian. Personally, I always prefer online references as I like to check them out. I also wonder why the Norwegian language icon - (in Norwegian) - has not been used in the references. But these are very minor points and the article has been well researched. -- Ipigott (talk) 14:10, 12 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

I am including this on your talk page as I wonder whether you are able to "watch" the huge number of articles you create every day. I am really impressed. Over 14,000 articles since 2005. Is this not a record? -- Ipigott (talk) 15:16, 12 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Wow, the article improved with your copyedit. Thanks! Yes I do create many articles, I often specifically search for possibilities of creating a new article. As you say, no, I don't have the capacity to watchlist them all... I think only one non-bot user has created more articles than me, his name is User:Himalayan Explorer. Geschichte (talk) 15:56, 12 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Himalayan Explorer does indeed seem to be even more productive. The search tool clocked up over 28,000 articles before it (or the browser) broke down. I was however somewhat concerned to see the name change to User:Dr. Blofeld and the strange new introduction to the user page. -- Ipigott (talk) 21:12, 12 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, can you revisit this FLC to ensure that your concerns have been resolved, and if possible clarify whether you support, oppose, or are neutral on the list's promotion to FL status? Thanks, Dabomb87 (talk) 21:52, 14 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I queried the Nobel Institute about the deputies, and received the following answer: "Det stemmer at vedkommende [Cornelius Bernhard Hanssen] var nestleder i en periode. Jeg kan dessverre ikke se at vi har noen lister som kan bekrefte eller avkrefte hvem som var nestledere til enhver tid, men hvis du tar deg en tur innom vårt bibliotek ved anledning vil du kunne sjekke dette i Nobelkomiteens årsberetninger (kan brukes som akademisk referanse fordi de er stortingsmeldinger)." I can sit down later (either this evening or later in the weekend) and go systematically through NSD to find out their references on the matter, but if there are gaps, do you have an interest or possibility of dropping by the institute and having a look? I'm in Bergen, won't be in Oslo for months (havn't been there in almost a year now). Arsenikk (talk) 11:24, 15 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
I don't think NSD is trustworthy as a systematic source either. I'm not against dropping by the Nobel library—writing a list of the deputy leaders seems to be a sort of groundbreaking and therefore exciting work—but do I have to make some sort of appointment to go there? I guess that the library is open to everybody, can't harm just trying to go there because anyway, I pass it everyday on my way home from university. It closes 15:45 so I can't make it today; I have my last forelesning of the semester. Geschichte (talk) 11:38, 15 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Israel edit

As they say in the real estate game, its location, location, location. All of the Middle East is recognized geographically as being in Asia, except for the Western portion of Turkey on the other side of the Bosphorus. Turkey is an exceptional borderline country that straddles two continents, with the majority of its largest city Istanbul being in Europe while the rest of the population being in Asia. Other exceptions are Russia generally called part of Europe though most of its land is in Asia, Kazakhstan generally being called part of Asia, Georgia (country) and Azerbaijan being primarily in Europe but frequently considered as part of Asia because of the close association to neighboring Armenia. Egypt and Panama also technically straddle continents separated by man made canals across the ismus. Being members of any organization might cross over border lines, Guadeloupe and Martinique in the Caribbean are part of France. With all these possible exceptions and confusions, for the general public to understand, we should stick with recognized geographic continents.Trackinfo (talk) 16:23, 19 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

We are not talking about whatever organization Israel is part of. Wikipedia provides information to the general public, not members of organizations. Most novice readers, unassociated with the sport, would not know about who the EAA is or what they do. This particular page is not identifying members of an organization, it is locating individuals who have changed country affiliation. Israel is, by most definitions, physically located in Asia. As I said on the talk page, several countries, most particularly France, have overseas states in other continental areas. People who come from those states are citizens of the home country. So a French citizen from Martinique in the Americas would still be European under this definition. They march behind the French flag in the Olympic opening ceremonies. Even countries that are bi-continental have a common definition toward one continent. For the general usage of our readers we need to be consistent with global interpretations of a country's location. Trackinfo (talk) 16:23, 30 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

So they don't know what EAA is? Then I guess we shouldn't tell them. Because that's not what we do.
Well, quite the contrary, Israel's adherence in sport is leaning very strongly towards Europe, as the Israeli bodies are members of EAA, UEFA, EHF, ULEB, LEN, the European Boxing Union, the European Judo Union and more. Countries "split" between continents, including France, have not a thing to do with this. Geschichte (talk) 13:52, 1 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2010 April newsletter edit

Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. Congratulations to   Hunter Kahn (submissions), our clear overall round winner, and to   ThinkBlue (submissions) and   Arsenikk (submissions), who were solidly second and third respectively. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive.

Judge iMatthew has retired from Wikipedia, and we wish him the best. The competition has been ticking over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. A special thank you goes to participants   Stone (submissions) and   White Shadows (submissions) for their help in preparing for round three. Good luck everyone! To stub (or not to stub) edit

Hi. I think there's a bit of individual leeway here, but Andrew Thorne goes a bit beyond what I'd define as a stub - it's got more than a trivial amount of text, and gives some detail about the subject's main activity even if it's not complete. (FWIW, I would have called this version one, but not the current version).

I've added a quick note about Norway pending expansion. Shimgray | talk | 07:17, 4 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Translations edit

Hello Geschichte - regarding your edit summaries here and here, I didn't "make up" the titles. I ran each newspaper article through google translate to ensure it backed up the information I was sourcing; the titles I used came directly from the Google translation and I thought it may be helpful for readers of the english wikipedia to be able to see the newspaper article title in english. I have no issues with using the original language title in lieu of the translation, however you could have just asked me as opposed to accusing me of making things up. --Jezebel'sPonyoshhh 14:17, 16 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • They were made up insofar that no articles with such titles exist in the real world. Translating titles is allowed, but it has its own parameter: | trans_title = . Be careful with Google Translate: "Helse Nord" isn't "Northern Health", it's the Northern Norway Regional Health Authority. To my surprise Google Translate managed to not translate a personal name like Bjørnøy to Bear Island. However other translations such as this are meaningless. Geschichte (talk) 14:08, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm simply going to stick with the actual foreign language article title moving forward, which is what I have always done in the past. It would be unfortunate for a translation to be misleading and perhaps it's best to avoid it altogether. I simply wanted to assure you that I personally was not making up article headlines. I appreciate your input, --Jezebel'sPonyoshhh 16:23, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Road relays edit

As far as I know, there is no official standardised distance for road relays. Road relays over the marathon distance are actually ekiden competitions, but even those can vary significantly in terms of the number of stages and leg-distance (with stages being of equal length or of differing lengths). I would imagine that Ekidens account for a significant part of road relays, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were many lesser-known competitions over different distances (as you mention). Still, the IAAF-sponsored Championships were all based on the ekiden model. Sillyfolkboy (talk) (edits)Join WikiProject Athletics! 12:09, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

We're half way through 2010, and the end of the WikiCup is in sight! Round 3 is over, and we're down to our final 16. Our pool winners were   Ian Rose (submissions) (A),   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (B, and the round's overall leader),   ThinkBlue (submissions) (C)   Casliber (submissions) and   TonyTheTiger (submissions) (D, joint), but, with the scores reset, everything is to play for in our last pooled round. The pools will be up before midnight tonight, and have been selected randomly by J Milburn. This will be the toughest round yet, and so, as ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Though unaffiliated with the WikiCup, July sees the third Great Wikipedia Dramaout- a project with not dissimilar goals to the WikiCup. Everyone is welcome to take part and do their bit to contribute to the encyclopedia itself.

If you're interested in the scores for the last round of the Cup, please take a look at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Round 3 and Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Full/Round 3. Our thanks go to   Stone (submissions) for compiling these. As was predicted, Group C ended up the "Group of Death", with 670 points required for second place, and, therefore, automatic promotion. This round will probably be even tougher- again, the top two from each of the two groups will make it through, while the twelve remaining participants will compete for four wildcard places- good luck everyone! Adeccoligaen edit

Teams playing in Adeccoligaen need a so-called "licence for professional football" in order to play there, or they are relegated to the Second Division. For instance, Moss were originally relegated from Adeccoligaen before this season because they didn't meet the demands to get the license [2] ("profflisens" = "pro license"). I can't find any information on the internet confirming that the league actually has a "professional status" apart from this "license". There are both professional and part-time players in the league, but the league itself seems to have this pro 'status'. It could be a borderline case, of course. What is your source?
