Also, earlier I placed a few comments in your Archive box, not really understanding how that works. I just assumed that you wanted them in the Archive rather than placed here. Perhaps you have read those comments by now, or maybe not. My experience with Wiki hadn't seen an Archive box with nothing else on the discussion page yet.

It just seems to me that others interested in ASU should know about people like Gene Wooten, who lived there, played there, walked the halls, etc. He's passed on, but has accomplished so much in his career as a musician, and his success is largely owed to experiences at ASU and the other students there who appreciated his work.

You are right about non-graduates putting ASU on their resumes. Basically worthless, but these are people who have transcended the need for resumes by their accomplishments.

Thanks for listening and helping to come up with a solution. I'm ok with whatever works. Perhaps the alumni list(s) or notable persons list for ASU can be as diverse someday as the lists on the articles for Dartmouth, Harvard, West Point, Smith College, Holly Cross, USAF, Bowdoin and others. All these articles recognize non-graduate alumni or have them mixed in.

Here's something for you. The Appalachian State University newspaper did an article on Byron Hill two years ago. They referred to him as "ASU alum" even though he clearly stated in the interview that he "attended" ASU. Also, I found out today that the ASU Music Department included him in a meeting of their department heads and alumni held in Nashville two years ago for roundtable advice on getting ASU music interns into the music business. Also, Mr. Hill served as a Boone NSAI Workshop Mentor for several years working with Boone area and ASU students interested in songwriting. He was also the NSAI Workshop mentor for Charlotte, NC for two years and continues to visit Charlotte yearly for meetings with the group. I have never come across someone who wants to block successful alumni from being listed on a college site just because they didn't graduate from there. Colleges and hometowns are one of the firt places I turn to when spreading the word about someone I think they should know about. Colleges and universities need these interesting tidbits of information. If you want to start getting selective about alumni, forget the fact that the definition of the word alone qualifies both Mr. Hill and Mr. Wooten, and start looking through the list. Does a linebacker for a pro football team qualify someone more for the list than someone who has written hit songs for huge stars or someone who was a famous instrumentalist on a Grammy Award winning album? ASU's Wikipedia ASU article benefits a lot more from having these true alumni listed than these persons benefit from being listed. I can tell from this discussion however, that you consider yourself the alumni police for the ASU article, but there are a lot of contributors to the page other than you, you are not the Wiki police, and though you have done a splended job, your focus is on sports hero alumni and you are unreasonably enforcing your own definition of "alumni". As I have told you, the definition of "alumni" and/or "alumnus" from two respected publications states what it is. I think what you said on my Talk page is the problem. You said that it is your definition of "Alumni". I am certain that the ASU Alumni Association does not limit their membership to graduates, and it would be self-defeating to do so. These schools welcome the support of all they alumnus, graduates or not. Do what you want, but it just seems silly to police the ASU article with your own definitions and interpretation of standards. What does it hurt to a true "alumnus" of ASU who has done something notable (that ASU would be proud of) in their career to be mentioned under Notable Alumni? Your definition of "alumni" is limited to graduates? This is highly suspect. There are a lot of almunus of ASU that support the school, and are even involved in advisory capacities to the school in various areas of business. You can't exclude people who have attended the school and moved on from the list of alumni by choice. By definition they ARE alumni.

Below is the definition of "alumni" per dictionary.com: 1. a graduate or former student of a specific school, college, or university. 2. a former associate, employee, member, or the like: He invited all the alumni of the library staff to the party.

Below is the definition of "alumnus" per Websters New World Dictionary: -a person, esp a boy or man, who has attended or is a graduate of a particular school, college, or university.

I suggest that you may want to start a new section called "Notable Graduates" (that would be odd though, and certainly out of form for Wikipedia) because the term almuni clearly and has always included persons who have attended or graduated from a school. It would be quite unusual to limit the list to graduates. There is a standard here by definition that should be adhered to.Wikibones 18:49, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

ASU notable alumni should include persons other than sports heroes. I specialize in noteworthy North Carolinians in the entertainment world. See Gene Wooten, Terry Lee McMillan, Byron Hill, Earl Scruggs, and there are man others I am working on and/or contributing to. You deleted a very successful American songwriter from the ASU notable almuni and only mentioned it as "alumni cleanup". I have reverted this, and would like to ask you to not remove his name from the notable alumni. UNC-Pembroke

Hi, Geologik. Great work on all of the NC-related articles. I recognize that UNC-Pembroke is the official abbreviation of the university, but by listing it this way, it is now the only one sorted based on "U" for "University" which breaks with the convention used in this particular list. All of the of other "University of"'s in this particularly list have been removed (note the university of Nebraska's and university of minnesota's in this list) So I have reverted the listing from UNC-Prembroke (sorted on "U" for "University") to North Carolina-Prembroke (sorted on "N") for consistency with all of the other entries for this list.

Oh, yeah, I realize that this is handled differently than in List of college athletic programs by U.S. State and I'm not disputing that UNC-Pembroke is the media-used name, I'm just keep this list consistent with itself. -Gwguffey (talk) 22:49, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

List of Appalachian State Mountaineers football seasons

Don't be down — we all go through the process. It just takes time; stick with it, and you'll have it approved. If it were easy to do, everyone would do it and getting featured status wouldn't mean as much. Because of the challenge involved, making it happen means a lot more. I can offer a few tips based on my experience working with college football FAs and FLs.

• Don't feel like it has to be done overnight — it can take anywhere from three weeks to over a month to get featured status.
• Don't stress over a long list of questions or comments — The editor making the suggestions is just trying to help, and doesn't mean anything bad. Would you get upset if you were working on a computer in school and a teacher came over to give you some help? Probably not.
• Don't be afraid to go out and ask people to give you a review — In order to get enough, you'll almost certainly have to do this.
• Be sociable — Comment on other FLCs and FACs, particularly if they're in your area of interest. That'll let people see your name and get to know your work. In addition, they'll be more likely to give you support if you gave them support or comments.
• Persevere — If the article doesn't pass on the first try, don't give up. My first FAC failed twice before I was able to get it to pass. My latest FAC failed, and I'm only now starting to rebuild it.

I've given you my support on your FLC — I think it's very good work, and you should be proud of it. Just keep at it, and you'll do fine. JKBrooks85 (talk) 21:12, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

News Cape Lookout Lighthouse Hello WikiProject North Carolina members! A few of us at the The Newsroom Team decided to get together and re-energize the project, through these newsletters. This newsletter is hopefully the first of many to come. We want this project to be active in creating and expanding articles related to our state. If you're a current or former resident of the state, we hope that you will help spread the knowledge of how much there is to learn about North Carolina. A great way to expand new articles is by keeping track of the new articles list. Please add any new NC-related articles or older ones you come across that have not been tagged with the project banner. When you notice an article has been added to the list, read over it and check for citations, grammatical errors, and spelling. If you've written a NC-related article in the past 5 days, read the requirements for Did you know... and add your article to the DYK nomination list. It might be chosen for the Main Page! If you see a new member added to the project list, a great idea would be to leave them a welcome message on their talk page. Show them we notice new members and that we want them to become active participants. Congratulations to the editors who helped promote List of tallest buildings in Charlotte, List of North Carolina hurricanes (1900–1949), List of North Carolina hurricanes (1950–1979), and List of North Carolina birds to featured lists. Let's try to get a few more articles to featured status. North Carolina would be a great (and obvious) choice. Congratulations to the editors of Climate of North Carolina as well. This article was recently promoted to Good article status. A few suggestions for articles we can work on for GA are Raleigh, North Carolina, Charlotte, North Carolina, Greensboro, North Carolina, Geography of North Carolina, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. If you're a history buff, check out List of Registered Historic Places in North Carolina. There are many articles to be written and your help would be greatly appreciated. I think most or all of these were already en dashes. En dashes can be rendered with either the symbol (–) or the code you used. I prefer the former as it's quicker and less bloated. Conference Facilities (SoCon)

Geologik, what is your problem? the links are not properly labeled for Western Carolina. I realize you are from ASU, what do you have against properly labeling facilities? Glovejr (talk) 04:02, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Last time I looked, no matter how much work you put into an article, it does not deem you the owner. Reasonable changes can be made to ANY article, I DID NOT vandalize the article, I DID NOT put anything untrue in the article. You have a lot of gall talking about facility names when you use “Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium” rather than the much shorter "Smith Stadium" which would fit your “ less is more” theory (obviously whats good for other schools is not good for asu). ALSO, there is not even a link to the “Catamount Athletic Complex” (AND you do not even have the proper name of the facility listed, you left "Athletic" out of the name). Get a life, when I vandalize something report me, until then, LEAVE MY APPROPRIATE CHANGES ALONE. AND ANOTHER THING- talk about an advertisement, you are trying to make the SoCon page a add for asu - and you calling the Western page an ad after looking at the asu pages is truly unbelievable.

Re: Season Naming

Good to hear! App State is definitely one of the more important CFB programs out there today, and I'm glad you're devoting the time to it. I discovered the 'neers a few years back, when I was at Tech and a friend was on the Morehead State team. Went down to Boone for one of the games, and had a great time.

Anyways, I think the more common way to do it is by coach grouping. Unfortunately, even more common is breaking down by individual years -- even if there's not enough information to really warrant a separate article. (i.e. 1901 Oklahoma State Cowboys football season) Articles like those, however, are in real danger of an AfD.

I'd suggest grouping by coaches for the older seasons where information is harder to come by online (say, before 2005 or so, to start). You shouldn't have any problems finding plenty of sources for the championship seasons, so I'd suggest breaking those out into individual years to start. The rest, group by coaches.

Regardless of which route you decide to take, just be sure that you've got a handful of reliable cites on the page. Even if the article isn't much more than a stub, putting good cites on it is almost an impermeable shield against AfD. JKBrooks85 (talk) 08:03, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Problem with DYK nom

Hi, Geologik! There's a problem with the DYK nom you submitted here for 2005 NCAA Division I-AA football season. Articles should have more than 1500 characters of prose to be eligible for DYK. Since your article is a list, most of it is not counted. I suggest you expand the lead section a bit more if possible, since in list articles it is usually the lead that consists the 1500 characters. If you think it is uncontested you can simply move it to the uncontested section and see if anyone does contest it. NCAA Division I Football Championship

What is your antipathy toward a simple hatnote? It is not as if I suggested renaming the article. And how exactly is placing a hatnote doing a "disserve [sic] to fans of the teams who play annually for the NCAA's only Division I football championship"? Since you apparently ignored my suggestion to read WP:DISAMBIGUATION, it says:

"disambiguation links – at the top of an article (hatnotes), that refer the reader to other Wikipedia articles with similar titles or concepts... Users searching for what turns out to be an ambiguous term may not reach the article they expected. Therefore any article with an ambiguous title should contain helpful links to alternative Wikipedia articles or disambiguation pages, placed at the top of the article using one of the templates shown below."

This is clearly a case of another similarly titled concept with an ambiguous title, and it is quite conceivable that a reader looking for the FBS format would end up at this article instead. Strikehold (talk) 23:30, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
