African American newspapers / Black newspapers

Hi FloridaArmy, I saw your editing note. I just wanted to give a little context as to why I use the phrase. In library science it's common to categorize publications based around the characteristics of their creators and intended audiences, particularly when the creators and audience use a self-identifying term. So we end up with Library of Congress Subject Headings like Black newspapers, Asian American newspapers, Gay newspapers etc. There is no "White newspapers" subject heading because white people have been the dominant group directing mainstream culture for the last several centuries, so the subject heading used is just "newspapers." This is similar to the reason that there's Black Entertainment Television but no "White Entertainment Television". The significance of using the term Black, Asian American, or Gay sends a message to the minority audience (and the broader community) that the media is "for our community, by our community," which can be meaningful for minority groups. Therefore, since it's a term used by the creator and audience, it's the term that I also use to describe the periodicals. I get that saying "Black newspapers" may hit the ear a little wrong if you're trying to be equitable, but I hope that the context above helps explain my orientation to how I've been writing the newspaper articles. Thanks! Clifflandis (talk) 13:11, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

User:Clifflandis there is a difference between categorizing for library organization and encyclopedia writing. In an encyclopedia we strive for clarity and to avoid ambiguity. When you call something an African American newspaper it's not clear whether that means it serves an African American community, is owned by African Americans, is written by African Americans, or all three.
I understand this is a sensitive area and people get defensive, but for clarity sake and to avoid prejudice it's best to avoid describing people as African American artists or works as African American XYZ. It's better to explain accurately what the subject is.
As I tried to explain in my note, if you start adding "white executive" or "white newspaper" it won't fly. Saying that's okay because whites are dominant doesn't really fly either. Many areas are predominantly African Amwrican. So again, it's better to accurately describe rather than stereotype. Stereotyping might be okay or necessary in categorizing library materials, but isn't best practice for encyclopedia writing. FloridaArmy (talk) 14:26, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
I would also note that with your examples we don't seem to describe papers as Gay newspapers but instead prase it as LGBT focused newspaper. I understand these differences in phrasing are subtle but I don't think they are insignificant. Exerting dominance and marginalizing is an issue. I understand that editors using bigoted langauge aren't normally doing so purposefully. I am uncomfortable explicating on these sensitive issues but we need to do a better job as far as coverage, inclusion, and avoiding discriminatory and prejudiced writing. FloridaArmy (talk) 15:30, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for correcting me. I'll avoid working on these topics to avoid causing further problems. Thanks! Clifflandis (talk) 15:40, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
Why not just avoid referring to people or subjects by their ethnicity except in appropriate contexts? I understand it can feel like a mine field. As I noted I am uncomfortable discussing and don't want to be an advocate. I often change "African American XYZ" to note instead that XYZ is so and so and was African American. Not infrequently it gets changed right back. There's also discussion of whether slaves should be referred to as enslaved. A lot of our history is bigoted. Read about the Dunning School for example. I don't think it needs to be scary or hurtful to try and fix it. I'm sorry I didn't do a better job of explaining or encouraging positive change. It's not an area I am comfortable in. Best regards. Thanks for all your good works. I am sorry I wasn't helpful. Take care. FloridaArmy (talk) 16:01, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:Anduril Industries

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:Anduril Industries requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://theintercept.com/2019/03/09/anduril-industries-project-maven-palmer-luckey/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. As usual User:Clarityfiend you completely disregard out notability policies and instead engage in personal attacks. We've had nothing on this subjwct for however many years and now we have a well cited start. You can and must do better. FloridaArmy (talk) 22:37, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
How many other Afcers above have rejected your drafts? In the recent Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/July 2021 Backlog Drive, many of my 135 decisions were reviewed, and all but one was passed (that one exception was a clearly notable person, but the reviewer simply found it was inadequately sourced). It is clear that you are the one who doesn't understand the notability standards. I shouldn't have named names, but I am fed up with your persistence in not learning what is well-sourced and what is not. There is nothing in WP:COMPOSER about major labels. That is a criterion for actual performers. If you are so sure I am dead wrong about Lemonier, go ahead and resubmit him for review. Clarityfiend (talk) 05:07, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
User:Clarityfiend, as such an expert and experienced reviewer I am sure you are familiar with criteria 3 from Wikipedia:Notability (music) "Has released two or more albums on a major record label or on one of the more important indie labels (i.e., an independent label with a history of more than a few years, and with a roster of performers, many of whom are independently notable)." If you're fed up just move on. Plenty of work to do. Like a lot of people who make smug comments, it is you who are out of line. This is a volunteer project. If you have better sources or can write entries better than I can have at it. FloridaArmy (talk) 11:17, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

I moved this one to mainspace following your expansion after the decline (thanks). Levivich 15:09, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

Marion A. Brooks

Hi FA, I moved Marion A. Brooks from draftspace to mainspace because I think the notability is well-established by the cited book sources (and others I found searching Google books). I'm going to go through other drafts that cite these sources (i.e., notable 19th century black actors and playwrights) and pull out those I believe meet WP:N, and I can see already that several are written by you. Normally when doing this, I'd also spend some time touching up the stubs, adding categories, wikiprojects on the talk page, maybe an infobox, etc., but in this case I feel like there's another editor (you, the creator) who might be willing to do this, and it'll free up more of my time to go through drafts and move them to mainspace if I don't have to spend time touching up the mainspace stubs. So I'm going to move the stubs but not really improve these stubs, and if you want to do that, it'd certainly be appreciated (obviously you don't have to). Let me know if you want me to notify you of any other drafts of yours I move, I'm happy to do it, but I also don't want to spam your talk page :-) Thanks for writing these articles, and cheers. Levivich 16:41, 5 August 2021 (UTC)

Sounds great User:Levivich. Definitely give me a heads up on any that you move so I can fix them up. I get a fresher look after not having seen them in a while and definitely want them to be as shapely as I can make them thanks again. Let me know if I can help in any other ways. FloridaArmy (talk) 20:53, 5 August 2021 (UTC)
User:Levivich off the top of my I would suggest having a look at Draft:John Clein and Draft:Leonard Anderson. They were both involved in numerous notable project in a substantial way. I believe that meets the key criteria. I also am confident they would survive a deletion discussion and common sense applies. Obviously it would be nice if there was more biographical coverage of them, and there may be in the Black newspapers that covered these types of film and theater projects, but regardless their notabioity is established by the significant projects they had major roles in making. FloridaArmy (talk) 21:09, 5 August 2021 (UTC)
    • Draft:The Broken Violin (1928 film) is notable. Every Oscar Micheaux film should be covered.
    • Draft:Carl Mahon, obviously not a hugely successful or impactful but meets the entertainer criteria for having had aubstantial roles in notable film projects. Certainly more out there on all these people and their projects but I don't yet have newspaper access and newspapers serving African American communities are lesa available. But I don't see how he isn't notable per our criteria. FloridaArmy (talk) 21:30, 5 August 2021 (UTC)

FWIW I looked at Draft:The Broken Violin (1928 film) and I don't think we have enough sourced content to justify a stand-alone page on it, as opposed to writing about it on the page Oscar Micheaux. Generally, I personally don't believe that every film by a notable filmmaker is notable. But "notability" aside (I've written at WT:N why I don't like that word or using it as a test), I look at it this way: readers will generally be better served reading about Micheaux's films on Micheaux's page, so they'll get the context. Some Micheaux films are so "notable" that they're a lot written about them, and if we put it all on Micheaux's page it'll overwhelm the rest of the biography. So those films we WP:SPINOFF into separate pages. (So I think of whether we should have a stand-alone page on a topic through the lens of WP:SPINOFF and WP:PAGEDECIDE, rather than trying to determine if each topic meets a test called "notability". Just my personal approach to this, I'm not suggesting that's consensus or anything.) Within Our Gates is an example where we have too much to say to put it in Micheaux's biography, but I don't think The Broken Violin passes that threshold. From what I can tell, it's mentioned but with very little depth, even in the biographies of Micheaux (like Ronald Green's). So my suggestion, if you want, would be to expand the content about the films on Oscar Micheaux's page, or, probably better, to start a Filmography of Oscar Micheaux sub-article that combines all of these film stubs. A reader reading The Millionaire (1927 film) or The Spider's Web (1926 film) wouldn't even know that those are AA films by a famous AA filmmaker; I feel like the reader will get a lot more reading about the collection of works than about each film independently. Personally, I think all those Micheaux film stubs should redirect to a filmography page that provides the reader with context. (The filmography page would probably make a good DYK.) Anyway, that's my long rambling explanation for why I didn't move that one to mainspace :-) I'll keep looking through the others. Levivich 15:34, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

User:Levivich I understand your viewpoint, but it doesn't make sense to cover the lesser known aspects of a subject in their article and spin off the well known ones. There is too much coverage of this film to cover in the parent subject so it would be undue. And it's not just significant to Micheaux but actors and others who made the film. It's hard enough to include subjects about African Americans on Wikipedia without excluding a film by one of the most prominent filmmakers in history. It would be great if more were known about the film and we had more coverage but we have to start somewhere. Many newspapers serving African Americans also have acant coverage. This was a film by a major and inportant director. He made 40 or so films and yes all of them are notable. Our readers are best served by having access to the storylines and casts of each of them. No one in their right mind would take this subject to an AfD and it would be great if they did because it would get expanded. So yes, this and the other films he made are notable. They should be noted in the entry on him and covered independently as indicated by our apinoff and notabikity policies. This is also useful for categorizing and such. For what it's worth, he recorded at least one side for Apollo Records, catalog #1025, recorded October 1946. Titles: Whistlin' At The Chicks / Ain't Gonna Worry 'Bout Nothin'.
