Image cropping

Hi Epicgenius, a different topic from Wikipedia:WikiProject Chinese in New York City (although I hope that's going well) - do you know how to "crop" any given image from the Commons? If so, can you please outline briefly outline the steps? Best, Castncoot (talk) 02:23, 27 February 2017 (UTC)

@Castncoot: Sure. I suggest that you use CropTool. You can go to this link, authorize the tool to connect to your Wikimedia account (you might need to login again), and enter the file name. Then the image will show up and you can automatically set the dimensions that you want. epicgenius (talk) 03:42, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
You learn something new every day - thank you very much!! How is the WikiProject progressing on your end? Castncoot (talk) 22:42, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
@Castncoot: It's going well, thanks. I finally have time to do it, and I'll start working on it tomorrow. epicgenius (talk) 22:43, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
Excellent, thank you. Castncoot (talk) 22:48, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

Proposed expansion of the New York City Subway

As you know, there is a GA review. I am not sure if I will be able to singlehandedly get rid of all of the copy write violations. Whole sections of the article are just lifted from nycsubway.org. I have started to rewrite it, but could you please help? Thanks.--Kew Gardens 613 (talk) 23:18, 27 February 2017 (UTC)

@Kew Gardens 613:} Sure, I can definitely help. Regards, epicgenius (talk) 00:34, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

Pending GA - Trump Tower

Hi Epicgenius,

There are a few things I suggested for follow up before approving Trump Tower for GA. Please respond on the talk page for the GA review when you have the chance.

Thanks, Shaded0 (talk) 05:26, 4 March 2017 (UTC)

@Shaded0: Thank you for the note. I'll fix these issues up in the next few days. epicgenius (talk) 22:51, 4 March 2017 (UTC)

DYK for IND Queens Boulevard Line

On 5 March 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article IND Queens Boulevard Line, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that construction on the 179th Street terminal station on the New York City Subway's Queens Boulevard Line was delayed for almost 20 years? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/IND Queens Boulevard Line. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, IND Queens Boulevard Line), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Your GA nomination of North Shore Branch

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article North Shore Branch you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria.   This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Shearonink -- Shearonink (talk) 08:09, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Coney Island–Stillwell Avenue (New York City Subway) GA nomination

Since you appear to be the main contributor for this article, I am informing you that it has been nominated for Good Article status by Kew Gardens 613 and that I am in the process of reviewing it here: Talk:Coney Island–Stillwell Avenue (New York City Subway)/GA1. It's mostly ship-shape, but there are a handful of minor things that should be observed. Jackdude101 (Talk) 3:00, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

@Jackdude101: I didn't know that article was GA nominated. Thanks for the notice. epicgenius (talk) 14:22, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
Review complete. It's now a Good Article! Congratulations! Jackdude101 (Talk) 18:00, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

New York City English

RE: it's a sortkey. It appropriately shows up under the letter "E" in Category:Culture of New York City, rather than under "N")

Thanks for letting me know. Perhaps, we can clear up any future confusion with a comment. Comments can be formatted like this: <!--insert comment here-->.LakeKayak (talk) 20:06, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

@LakeKayak: Thanks for your feedback. We can link to the policy page WP:SORTKEY in the comment. However, since sortkeys are used in many articles, I'm not sure we need to put a hidden comment there, anyway. epicgenius (talk) 20:11, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

It might not be needed. However, from my own experience programming, I think it may be a good idea. It was my first encounter of the sortkey and I had no idea what it was. Therefore, before I insert the comment, do you object? Thank you.LakeKayak (talk) 20:17, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

No, I'm fine with the comment. Also, as a fellow programmer (albeit maybe intermediate level), I can tell you that the syntax of Wikipedia is different than any programming syntax such as HTML, though we do use JS and CSS. epicgenius (talk) 21:25, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for March 10

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited T (New York City Subway service), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Second Avenue Line. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Photo of Borough Park

Thanks for your edits to Borough Park, Brooklyn. I am puzzled though by your choice of photo which purports to portray the neighborhood. I would hope you would consider some iconic views that are more representative of what this neighborhood is about, such as the New Utrecht elevated subway tracks, or the McDonald Ave tracks right around the corner from your photo; the Blythebourne post office; or the Maimonides Medical Center, just to name a few. StonyBrook (talk) 19:16, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

@StonyBrook: Thanks for the feedback. I can't find the post office image on Commons. What photo would you consider? epicgenius (talk) 19:42, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of North Shore Branch

The article North Shore Branch you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold  . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:North Shore Branch for things which need to be addressed. Proposed expansion of the New York City Subway

Can you help me more with this? I don't know how to remove the copyright violations any further.[1] Thanks.

Sure. I'll try to find the remaining copyvios and remove them. epicgenius (talk) 17:37, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
Upon further inspection, the nycsubway.org uses the same proper names for different NYC Subway lines as we do. The copyvio is actually not as bad once you filter the proper names out, since there's no way around them (e.g. "IRT White Plains Road Line" is the proper name of the IRT White Plains Road Line and the full name is used both on-wiki and in nycsubway.org). epicgenius (talk) 17:57, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

Much thanks for improving on my edits to Fort Hamilton Parkway. Without your input, the article would have been deleted or greatly reduced in scope.(talk) 04:26, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

Brighton Line stations' opening dates

Hi Epicgenius. Thanks for your work on making more GAs. Today I found the opening date for the 207th Street (IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line) leaving only the opening dates for the stations on the BMT Brighton Line in doubt. If possible, could you help me with this. Thank you.--Kew Gardens 613 (talk) 20:57, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

@Kew Gardens 613: Thank you as well, since your help in writing these articles is a very instrumental step in making these into GA's. As for the opening dates - I will check NY Times, Fulton History, and newspapers.com. epicgenius (talk) 00:09, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

Sunday March 26: Action=History Wiki-Hackathon @ Ace Hotel

On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history.

For this month, and following on the recent Art+Feminism campaign, we'll focus on building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 05:14, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Coney Island–Stillwell Avenue (New York City Subway)

Hello! Your submission of Coney Island–Stillwell Avenue (New York City Subway) at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! BlueMoonset (talk) 23:16, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Review was completed two weeks ago, and the QPQ is still due. Please supply it right away if you wish to continue with the nomination. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 23:16, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
OK, I'll do it ASAP. I thought I did the QPQ, but apparently I had to do two for Trump Tower so it didn't count toward Coney Island's QPQ. epicgenius (talk) 01:13, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

DYK for Trump Tower

On 27 March 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Trump Tower, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that when it was revalued at $600 million in 2015, New York City's Trump Tower (pictured) became the most expensive property owned by Donald Trump? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Trump Tower. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Trump Tower), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000.
