Julia Chinn edit

Hi there, the image purporting to be of Julia Chinn isn't only a caricature, it's essentially a caricature within a caricature. It has been cropped from a cartoon of a fictional scene containing a portrait implied to be of Julia Chinn, with an appearance that is deliberately unlike the actual historic person. Onetwothreeip (talk) 08:59, 25 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Onetwothreeip: Understood, I'm no expert on this topic, but I would suggest you get consensus on Talk:Julia Chinn before removing the image. Even though it's a caricature, it may be the only "likeness" we have to present an image of what she looked like, and that's why I would likely discourage the removal. I think providing context of that in the caption adds value. Best, --Engineerchange (talk) 15:24, 25 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

United States Revenue Marine edit

In the article John Adams Webster the name United States Revenue Cutter Service was first used in the 1890s and before that the service was known as Revenue Marine. Webster was an officer in the Revenue Marine. I thought my link provided adequate information about the service in which he served as it does link to the United States Revenue Cutter Service. My link was to preserve the historical aspect of the name of the service at the time Webster served. The use of the name United States Revenue Cutter Service as used by your edit is an historical inaccuracy. Please consider reverting your edit. Cuprum17 (talk) 14:33, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Cuprum17: Sorry, that was a sloppy edit by me. I will say that the cite (which I just added) says "Revenue Service", which can be confusing. --Engineerchange (talk) 14:55, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I read the newspaper article and the reporter probably looked back to the formation of the Coast Guard in 1915 and the Revenue [Cutter] Service as a forerunner and looked no further. Contemporaries of Webster might have even referred to the Revenue Marine as Revenue Service and informally. It was referred to that informally from time to time from the 1860s until 1894 when the change was made official. Thank you for your cooperation and the addition of the cite. Cuprum17 (talk) 17:14, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Cuprum17: of course, thank you for pointing out my error! --Engineerchange (talk) 17:18, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Help/ Mentorship edit

@Engineerchange: I admired your work from afar for quite some time and have been motivated by your edits. Having someone like you to guide and mentor me would be a real game-changer since you have been through the process and have succeeded. I just created this article JOM Charity Award noticed not live on google. Sorry to bother you. Wishing you a Happy new year. High regards. Calyx2s (talk) 18:15, 3 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Calyx2s: thanks for the kind note, I made a few edits. Be sure when you cite sources, not to copy paste the text from others, but to rewrite in your own words. Otherwise, it may fall under WP:COPYVIO. Thanks, --Engineerchange (talk) 01:15, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Engineerchange:Thank you for the help/guide and insights, I appreciate it. On the other hand, i noticed the article is not live on Google when search on. I'm sorry if disturbing you. Calyx2s (talk) 04:37, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Calyx2s: Google doesn't web crawl Wikipedia everyday. Read WP:SEO. I would anticipate the page to show up in Google search results within the next couple weeks, but no one truly knows. --Engineerchange (talk) 04:49, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Engineerchange:, I tried making research now, I found out is when a page is reviewed or patrol that when it goes live on Google and can only be done by an experience editor. Can you kindly help to review it.Calyx2s (talk) 05:11, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Calyx2s: I don't think I can help you any further. I do not have any reviewer or patroller rights. You can ask questions further at WP:Teahouse. --Engineerchange (talk) 05:42, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Breaks, Virginia edit

I'm not sure why you requested a photo at Breaks, Virginia. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 22:20, 27 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Magnolia677: I've been resorting all of the requested photos in Virginia. The article references the "break" in the mountain being the namesake for the town; seemed like an obvious suggestion. I believe the "of" param referenced that in the template. --Engineerchange (talk) 22:21, 27 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
You might find one here, or this one. --Magnolia677 (talk) 22:28, 27 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Magnolia677: added one of those. Cheers, --Engineerchange (talk) 22:36, 27 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Magnolia677: perhaps, the more appropriate question is do you know of a photo of _the_ "break" in Pine Mountain. I do think the namesake of a town (when available) is of interest (and relevance) to the reader. --Engineerchange (talk) 22:43, 27 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Having a photo of some other place that this place is named after, would be a decorative image. It would be similar to adding a picture of Kabul to Cabool, Missouri, or of Portuguese Angola to Angola, New York, or of Waterloo, Belgium to Waterloo, Indiana. --Magnolia677 (talk) 22:49, 27 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Magnolia677: I think your analogy would hold if it were named after some far off place; like Memphis, Tennessee or Greece, New York. The photo would be of a specific landmark that borders/intersects the area, so it being part of this place makes it within context. It's as significant and relevant to the article's context (per MOS:IMAGERELEVANCE) as including the photo of the (human) namesake of a town, which is fairly common. It being one of the few details in the article, I don't see how it couldn't be relevant. --Engineerchange (talk) 23:06, 27 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I will revert, so I'd suggest you start a discussion on the article talk page first. Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 23:11, 27 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Magnolia677: thanks for the note; added as suggested. --Engineerchange (talk) 23:20, 27 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter edit

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer   Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter edit

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to   Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
