New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024
Hello Cocobb8/Archives/2024,
Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.
Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.
Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.
It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!
2023 Awards
Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!
WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.
Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.
Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Pages Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Question from Lelmaster10 (06:01, 3 April 2024)
Hello! Im not really staying here long, but since Im here and they assigned you to me, any tips for finding obscure, old, or lost information? I'm working on a wiki for an old pizza place called Sgt. Singer's Pizza Circus, and all my methods are drying up, mainly newspapers and trying to find people online who remember the place. What else can I try? --Lelmaster10 (talk) 06:01, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Lelmaster10, If there's no article for it now on Wikipedia, or if you tried searching it up with Special:Search, I don't think I'll be much help here. You could try one of the reference desks, where research-oriented Wikipedians can redirect you to other places to find what you're looking for. Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 10:34, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
- Ah dang gotcha, I'll try these out. Thank you! Lelmaster10 (talk) 15:31, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
How to get started?
Hello @Cocobb8, I am reaching out because I would need to get some help to get started.
1) Could you tell me if it possible and how to look up for specific articles, for instance, can I edit some articles related to some Disney movies? I've got some more info to fill it in?
2) How can I reach out to you directly? Is it through this mailbox?
3) Can I edit all the articles? Could you tell me briefly what are semi-protected articles?
4) Some people find it pretentious I am a new contributor for WikiPedia? How can I convince them it is not juste a game? Any ideas, please? :)
5) Can I trust the info on Wikipedia, some people have disagreed with picking out info from it, especially because they found everyone can say everything about anything -which can potentially (100% for them) resulting in getting wrong and not accurate info about topics? What do you think?
Thanks in advance for your answer.
Have a nice day ahead!
:)
Fillecurieuse31 (talk) 16:15, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @Fillecurieuse31, and welcome to Wikipedia! Here are answers to your questions, in the order you asked them:
- If you're interested in editing Disney-related articles, there exists a Disney Wikiproject, outlining tasks and articles to work on . For a basic overview of what Wikipedia is all about, see this introduction to Wikipedia. And if you're ever looking for something to do, you can visit the Task Centre!
- To reach out to me directly, do it the way you just did! You may also navigate to Special:Homepage, where you should see a button to ask me a question (pressing that button will notify me on my talk page here too.)
- Semi-protected articles (those with the gray lock) are articles that only autoconfirmed editors can edit. The autoconfirmed user status is automatically assigned to any account once that account is at least 10 days old and has made at least 4 edits. P.S. Some articles have more protection, like those with blue locks, which only extended confirmed editors can edit (500 edits, 30 day-old account).
- You may convince them by telling them that anyone can contribute to Wikipedia. Also, Wikipedia is not a game, and was founded with 5 core principles.
- Hard to say, it depends on the article too. In general, Wikipedia is not a reliable source.
- Let me know if you have additional questions.Cheers! Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 20:05, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
Watchlist, submit a request, contact us, articles...
Hi @Cocobb8, I am reaching out because I've got some questions for you:
1) Could you tell me what is a watchlist, please? Could you tell me more about it?
2) How to submit a request to contribue to Disney's page? Could you guide me on?
3) What is the contact us button used for from the homepage since you are not a company?
4) Do I have to constantly contribue to every article? Will I lose my mumber status if I do not do so?
Thanks in advance for your answer.
Have a nice day! :)

- Everything you need to know about your watchlist.
- To submit an edit request for a protected article, see this.
- Contact us? You're probably talking about the "Contact Wikipedia" link at the bottom of the page. Don't worry about it.
- You contribute as much or as little as you want to, nothing will change besides you getting additional rights as you edit more and more.

Tech News: 2024-15
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Web browsers can use tools called extensions. There is now a Chrome extension called Citation Needed which you can use to see if an online statement is supported by a Wikipedia article. This is a small experiment to see if Wikipedia can be used this way. Because it is a small experiment, it can only be used in Chrome in English.
- A new Edit Recovery feature has been added to all wikis, available as a user preference. Once you enable it, your in-progress edits will be stored in your web browser, and if you accidentally close an editing window or your browser or computer crashes, you will be prompted to recover the unpublished text. Please leave any feedback on the project talk page. This was the #8 wish in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey.
- Initial results of Edit check experiments have been published. Edit Check is now deployed as a default feature at the wikis that tested it. Let us know if you want your wiki to be part of the next deployment of Edit check. [4][5]
- Readers using the Minerva skin on mobile will notice there has been an improvement in the line height across all typography settings. [6]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 April. It will be on all wikis from 11 April (calendar). [7][8]
- New accounts and logged-out users will get the visual editor as their default editor on mobile. This deployment is made at all wikis except for the English Wikipedia. [9]

Hello! I clicked "publish" for my draft, but then it made we also sumbit it for review? what exactly was published? I thought i was able to post articles after 4 days and 10 edits? it says i have to wait at least 2 months to have it reviewed, and im confused :( Habesha101 (talk) 02:47, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Habesha101 The benefit of submitting to Articles for Creation (AfC) is that it'll get reviewed by an experienced editor to see if it meets the requirements for staying on the encyclopedia. You may move the article in the mainspace directly, but I highly discourage it for creating your first article, as it might very well be deleted in a couple days only. The AfC review process will enable you to get some feedback prior to publishing.Let me know if you have other questions. Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 13:23, 9 April 2024 (UTC)

- @Habesha101 Under the "tools" or "page" menu, is there not the option for it? Your account is autoconfirmed, so you should be able to move the page yourself. Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 22:12, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

Problems
- Between 2 April and 8 April, on wikis using Flagged Revisions, the "Reverted" tag was not applied to undone edits. In addition, page moves, protections and imports were not autoreviewed. This problem is now fixed. [10][11]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 April. It will be on all wikis from 18 April (calendar). [12][13]
- Default category sort keys will now affect categories added by templates placed in footnotes. Previously footnotes used the page title as the default sort key even if a different default sort key was specified (category-specific sort keys already worked). [14]
- A new variable
page_last_edit_age
will be added to abuse filters. It tells how many seconds ago the last edit to a page was made. [15]
Future changes
- Volunteer developers are kindly asked to update the code of their tools and features to handle temporary accounts. Learn more.
- Four database fields will be removed from database replicas (including Quarry). This affects only the
abuse_filter
andabuse_filter_history
tables. Some queries might need to be updated. [16]

sexual harrassment article has a typo
you reverted my edit saying it was not constructive but all I did was fix a typo. it was a fix of a typing error. there was an extra word that seemed to be accidentally added. how is that not constructive? there's a specific line that reads "or non-verbal conduct of a sexual nature, verbal." which I believe is a typo and tried to fix it. that is all. 68.57.111.241 (talk) 21:29, 18 April 2024 (UTC)

Growth News, April 2024
The Growth team will now send quarterly reports to keep you in the loop. Growth team weekly updates are available on wiki (in English) if you want to know more about our day-to-day work.
If you want to receive more general updates about technical activity happening across the Wikimedia movement (including Growth work), we encourage you to subscribe to Tech News.
Community Configuration
Growth features are currently configurable at Special:EditGrowthConfig
. This quarter we are working on making Community Configuration accessible for other MediaWiki developers while also moving Growth feature configuration to the new CommunityConfiguration extension.
An early version of Community Configuration can be tested at Spanish Beta Wikipedia. We plan to release the new Community Configuration extension to pilot wikis (Arabic and Spanish Wikipedia) in early May, 2024. The first non-Growth team feature to utilize Community Configuration will be Automoderator.
In parallel with the development, the Growth team will propose Community Configuration usage guidelines, Community Configuration design guidelines, and provide technical documentation.
Experiment Results
Add a Image experiment analysis results
The Growth team conducted an experiment to assess the impact of the “Add an Image” structured task on the Newcomer Homepage's "Suggested Edits" module. This analysis finds that the Add an Image structured task leads to an increase in newcomer participation on the mobile web platform, particularly by making constructive (non-reverted) article edits:
- The likelihood that mobile web newcomers make their first article edit (+17.0% over baseline)
- The likelihood that they are retained as newcomers (+24.3% over baseline)
- The number of edits they make during their first two weeks on the wiki (+21.8% over baseline)
- A lower probability of the newcomers' edits will be reverted (-3.3% over baseline).
Personalized praise experiment results
This feature was developed for Mentors as part of the Growth team's Positive Reinforcement project. When A/B testing on Spanish Wikipedia, we found no significant impact on retention, but we found a significant positive impact on newcomer productivity. However, we concluded that the results weren’t positive enough to justify the time investment from Mentors. We plan to discuss this feature with our pilot wikis, and consider further improvements before scaling this feature further. Meanwhile, communities willing to test the feature can ask to have it deployed. (T361763)
English donors encouraged to try editing
As in previous years, donors were directed to a Thank you page after donation (example). However, this year we tested a new “Try editing Wikipedia,” call to action on the Thank You page. This call to action linked to a unique account creation page. From this account creation page we were able to track Registrations and Activation (editing for the first time). During the English banner campaign, the Donor Thank you page led to 4,398 new accounts, and 441 of those accounts went on to constructively edit within 24 hours. (T352900)
Future work
Annual Plan
The Growth team and the Editing team will work on the WE1.2 Key Result in the coming fiscal year. We will start initial discussions with communities soon to help finalize our plans. (T361657)
Newcomer Homepage Community Updates module
We plan to A/B test adding a new Community Configurable module to the Newcomer Homepage that will allow communities to highlight specific events, projects, campaigns, and initiatives. We are early in the planning phase of this project that will take place first at our pilot wikis and wikis volunteering. We welcome community feedback on initial designs and plans, in any language at our project talk page.

Question from MickeyWikiFTW (13:53, 24 April 2024)
I made a change to a record but it is showing as reverted. Is there a process or step that I missed to add this info properly? --MickeyWikiFTW (talk) 13:53, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
- @MickeyWikiFTW Essentially, the issue is that you need to provide a reliable source for this change, as the person who reverted your edit said on the article's history page. Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 13:58, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

Question from Jack Hertz (18:33, 25 April 2024)
I am a popular music composer and want to know how to have an article on Wikipedia? --Jack Hertz (talk) 18:33, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @Jack Hertz! Thanks for reaching out. I first encourage you to check out this help topic, which outlines the requirements for a new Wikipedia article. As you will discover from reading that help topic, Wikipedia has a notability of people guideline that shows how to determine whether an individual is eligible for an article here. Essentially, you would be presumed to be "notable" if you have received significant coverage in secondary, external sources. If you are thinking about writing a draft yourself, I also encourage you to check out Wikipedia's conflict of interest guideline.Let me know if you have any questions, should it be on how to get a draft started or anything else.Cheers! - Thanks. I see a 40 year career, 200+ albums, and 3 records labels started, still not notable enough to be on here. I can also I can't do it myself. Oh well. Jack Hertz (talk) 21:09, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Jack Hertz You can also check WP:COMPOSER, which may have alternate notability criteria that you'd be eligible for. Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 21:12, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- I qualify for more than one of those, but I cannot write it myself. Jack Hertz (talk) 21:16, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Jack Hertz By "cannot" do you mean that you do not wish to, or that you are not allowed to do so on Wikipedia? Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 21:19, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- From what I read, I am not allowed due to COI. Jack Hertz (talk) 21:23, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- It is strongly discouraged, but if you understand Wikipedia's requirements, especially WP:NPOV, then it's not impossible. If you wish to try, I can help you along the way. Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 21:25, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
