User talk:Chris G/Archives/2007/October

Wikipedia has a new administrator!

  Thanks, October!
Thank you for voicing your opinion in my RfA, which passed today with a unanimous 79/0/0 tally. It feels great to be appreciated, and I will try my best to meet everyone's expectations. If you have any advice or tips, feel free to pass them along, as I am sure that I will need them! Cheers, hmwith talk 21:36, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

I don't know why you archived the discussion we had, it definately wasn't closed... But, anyway

You may want to check out Category:Brisbane Broncos, very interesting, considering there are lot of FA articles, when there are none. SpecialWindler talk (currently offline) 21:52, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, good work. I ask one question, why dosen't the bot work in other namespaces, such as talk. See here, which has a talk page, which should be "A" class but is given "Stub". SpecialWindler talk (currently offline) 05:35, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
YES, I love your bot. Real96 06:55, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
The statusbot, I mean. Real96 06:57, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Bot 3 (status bot clone)

just a thought - there ought to be a space between the time and (UTC). Also, as a matter of personal preference, I think that if you're going to put the date in in yyyy-mm-dd format that the time should follow, not precede. — Timotab Timothy (not Tim dagnabbit!) 08:32, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Hey Chris, awesome job of getting a bot to fill in for StatusBot! User:StatusBot/Status/ArielGold/LastEdit‎; 04:32 . . (+5) . . User:Chris G Bot 3 (Talk | contribs) (Updating user's last edit (BOT EDIT)) Bot is working great! (And yeah I'd put a space between time and (UTC) too. Fixed! ArielGold 08:40, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
Why did it stop? SpecialWindler talk (currently offline) 09:58, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Someone interupted me above. The Bot (2) still obviously dosen't work. Talk:Karmichael Hunt is of "A" status not "FA" —Preceding unsigned comment added by SpecialWindler (talkcontribs) 19:24, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Yes, sorry for signing. These little errors help you fix the bot, so I hope I'm not being a pest. SpecialWindler talk (currently offline) 09:55, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
The main reason, I ask about the "Talk" namespace is my wish to do categories such as Category:Unassessed rugby league articles, so that if they are assessed for one WikiProject but not another then it may show up (like here). This leads to another question - What does the bot do if there are two assessments like here. SpecialWindler talk (currently offline) 09:57, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
OK, thanks. That leads me to this question. Why didn't that work here. There are various ones rated by one WikiProject but not by the Rugby league one. Also it stopped at "H"  SpecialWindler talk (currently offline)  02:25, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
OK, I'll be on for a while still. Tell me when it's up.  SpecialWindler talk (currently offline)  02:38, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Renaming

If you are going to clerk you need to know that they can't make new names when they are close to an already existing username, the software stops it. Telling people to make a new account to fix capitalisation or spacing issues is pointless (they can't) and we generally always do those trivial ones for that reason. Secretlondon 10:38, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Why did user 216.119.8.2 modify your talk page?

Are you in some way connected to this vandal? He has repeatedly disrupted wikipedia and appears to be making edits to your page. User5802 11:22, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Chris G Bot 3

Hey Chris, thanks for the new clone. Statusbot disappeared pretty quickly. Just a wee problem, it said I was online the morning [1] when i hadn't edited for several hours (Special:Contributions/Maelgwn) cheers :: maelgwn - talk 23:20, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

You are encouraged to create a new account and contribute to Wikipedia under an appropriate username. Our username policy provides guidance on selecting your username.

Alternately, you may request a change in username if you want to keep the contributions from this account. To do so, please follow these directions:

  1. Add {{unblock-un|your new username here}} below. This is possible because even when you are blocked, you can still edit your own talk page.
  2. At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked.
  3. You will have 24 hours after the unblock to file a request before you may be re-blocked. Please note, you may only request a name that is not already in use; do not create the new account then request a name change. For more information, please visit Wikipedia:Changing username.

In many cases (especially if your account has few or no edits), it is much easier to create a new account. You may also edit Wikipedia without creating an account. Due to Wikipedia's mechanism for enforcing name changes, your IP address may be temporarily blocked. Unless you have also been engaging in vandalism or impersonation of another user, we will remove that block as soon as possible.

If you believe this block is unjustified, you may contest the block by adding the text {{unblock|your reason here}} below or emailing the administrator who blocked you.

This is a fake - I got a block notice too. User is just a brand new impostor :) --Benchat 06:24, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, actually got me a bit jumpy (thinking admin notice before block). That indef notice was his doing as well - until Flyguy blocked him for real :) --Benchat 06:30, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
Mmmm... got me as a 3RR notice was put up and I technically had done 3rvs to WP:AIV but they were deletions of a user's report. BTW, how's Chris G Bot 3 coming along? --Benchat 06:39, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
Nothing in particular I'm after, but a decent bot that makes updating status pages a thing of the past :) Thanks for all the great work with it --Benchat 07:24, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

I don't know if that is intended, but your bot just did some strange edits, like this one [2] (This account has not edited for a few days now) -- lucasbfr talk 13:41, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

  • I could be wrong, but I've been experiencing toolserver-related errors a lot lately when trying other tools, perhaps those are part of your bot's problems. - Mgm|(talk) 15:54, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

My recent RfA

I am sorry you felt it necessary not to support my RfA at this time. As you probably know, my RfA did not succeed. I will attempt to get some more experience and diversify myself before applying again in two month's time. I hope I will have allayed your concerns by then, but if not, feel free to comment the way you feel you should. Thank you for participating in my RfA. -- Cobi(t|c|b|cn) 18:14, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Chris G Bot 3

Hi Chris G

I love your bot, but I am not sure of two things:

  1. How to add your name to the list. I have added my userpage to the StatusBot category, but am not sure if that was right.
  2. How to have a fancier template. I have seen some users with a green symbol next to 'online' when they're online, and red for offline. How can I create that?

Thanks, Auroranorth 07:48, 7 October 2007 (UTC) == == Your GA nomination of Fedora (Linux distribution)

Bot?

Can you tell me what I am doing wrong with Chris G Bot 3? It refuses to change my status, and I use a custom template. Bushcarrot Talk Please Sign! Let's go Lightning! 01:50, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Thats allright. At the category, I have listed some that havn't worked (only a small minority). Just letting you know for your bot's sake.  SpecialWindler talk (currently in control)  11:52, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

The article Fedora (Linux distribution) you nominated as a good article has failed  , see Talk:Fedora (Linux distribution) for reasons why the nomination failed. If or when these points have been taken care of, you may apply for a new nomination of said article. If you oppose this decision, you may ask for a reassessment. Cheers, CP 03:22, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Not sure if you noticed, but I've made some changes to the page. I also asked CP for the informal re-assessment that he has posted in the talk page. Also, thanks for the addition of those references too. ~~ [Jam][talk] 09:02, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

I started the two statusbot pages yesterday I think, and so far, neither your bot or statusbot has updated my status or Last edit pages, located here and here. Is something wrong with the bots? It updates everyone except me. Tyler Warren (talk/contribs) 23:16, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Chris G Bot 3's Enabled/Disabled page

If I were to add colors to the page inside <noinclude> tags, would it disable the bot? Or is there some way to make it red on the main page if disabled and green if enabled? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gawaxay (talkcontribs) 23:54, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

As long as the page has the text "enabled' on it the bot will run, if it is missing that text the bot will loop until enabled and if I change the text of the page to die the bot will die. --Chris  G  08:06, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi Chris, I have just changed * {{On AFD|Anthony Chidiac (2nd nomination)}} to * {{On AFD|Anthony Chidiac|Anthony Chidiac (2nd nomination)}} as otherwise it does not point correctly to the artcile. Is this something your bot is not getting correct? --Bduke 11:07, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Idea for a bot.

If possible, I think a bot that can find who made a edit or a comment on a talk page and didn't sing there name, and knowbody signed for them. I have no progamming expirence, but i think it could work. -Tobi4242 02:04, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Quick question

Hey Chris! I was wondering if you could help me a bit :) I know that you are a good programmer, and figured you'd be the person to ask my question to. I'm creating a bot that archives threads on ANI that are marked with the {{resolved}} template. I have the source code below, written in Python with the Pywikipedia framework, and any tips or fixes would be appreciated. Thanks! ( arky ) 05:07, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
