 Tips
  • Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
  • It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at first—it's fine to edit using common sense.
  • If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Sign your messages with four tildes (~~~~), be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
  • When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
  • If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.
  • Have fun! Your presence in the Wikipedia community is welcome.

Happy editing! Cheers, Netherzone (talk) 14:55, 20 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! I have made some edits and am hoping to resubmit shortly. It's a little difficult to narrow down the exhibitions to that few. Do you think it will get flagged if I narrow it slightly? Chainsawpunk (talk) 20:30, 23 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
I saw the changes you made in table format. In all honesty, @Chainsawpunk I think it still needs to be trimmed. WP is an encyclopedia, which is very different than an artist's personal website, or a gallery website. Articles should be written concisely. I was tempted to edit the draft myself, but did not want you to feel like your toes were being stepped on. To my mind, the table is a) too long, and b) has a lot of repetitive data and c) relies mainly on one source. It is clear that he was a highly respected and exhibited artist; trust that. Here are some suggestions: I'd start a prose section that states that Shields had solo shows at Paula Cooper gallery annually or semiannually. We don't need to list each year when those shows took place because it is redundant info. Then, I'd select the solo shows at notable museums - those with a blue link, and cut out everything else. If our readership wants to know all the shows he's had, they can simply click a link to his website for that info. If you are comfortable, I can help out with the editing, just let me know. All the best, and thank you for the work you have done! Netherzone (talk) 22:06, 23 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
This is a great response thank you! I am going to try to edit it one more time with your suggestions in mind! If it doesn't work out then, I would love your help and suggestions. Chainsawpunk (talk) 00:52, 24 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
Wow!!! I Just saw all of the articles you have written and I am in awe!! Really amazing contributions and I hope to add as many. Thank you for all the work you've done, can't wait to read them :) Chainsawpunk (talk) 14:08, 24 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hello! I wanted to let you know why I changed the wikiprojects on the article talk page. Museum wikiprojects are for museums themselves as corporate or organizational entities, we don't use them on artist articles even if those artists have work in the museum collections. I moved the Textile arts WProj. inside the WIkiProject banner shell to keep things tidy. Next, I will modify the Biography tag - you can watch what I do to learn how to do this for your next article. Happy editing. Netherzone (talk) 19:18, 25 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
Okay thank you! I was just trying to figure out the tagging system for this and a few other articles I have pending. Thanks for clarity and all your help. Chainsawpunk (talk) 19:20, 25 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
If you have questions, please feel free to leave a message on my talk page User talk:Netherzone or "ping" me here by using a template like {{u|Name of editor you want to notify}} - that is two curly brackets: {, the letter u, the pipe symbol | (above the backslash on most keyboards), then close the template with two closing curly brackets } . More information on notifications can be found here: Help:Notifications. Netherzone (talk) 19:29, 25 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

I also fixed some of the redlinks in the exhibitions section of the article. Netherzone (talk) 19:45, 25 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Draft:Alan Shields edit

Hello! I saw your draft article on Alan Shields. He was a great artist, whose work I have admired for many years. If you are open to hearing feedback on the draft, I would suggest removing the long CV-like list of exhibitions, and instead select 5 or so of the most prestigious solo shows. Each of these should have a citation so that the shows can be verified. It could be then written in paragraph form with a sentence or two on the work in each show. (It's not necessary to write it in prose-style but it's more encyclopedic). The reason for this suggestion is that we see a lot of promotional articles for artists and actors, and I wouldn't want the article to be flagged as promotional content or maintenance-tagged for being resume-like. Just so you know there is a backlog at Articles for Creation, and it can sometimes take weeks to months for a draft to make it thru the process. Just sharing some thoughts as I see this is your first article. Will post a more formal Welcome message. Netherzone (talk) 14:54, 20 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Photo in Draft:Marsha Cottrell edit

Hi, in reviewing the Draft:Marsha Cottrell I noticed that you had uploaded the image used there as your 'own work'. This suggests that you may have an external relationship with the person in question, given that you have been at close enough quarters to take such a photo. I will post another message below with instructions for declaring and dealing with conflicts of interest (COI); please action as needed. Alternatively, it could be that you have no such relationship, and didn't in fact take that photo, but then you shouldn't have uploaded it as your own work, since you may not have the necessary rights to do that. Grateful if you could clarify either way. Thanks, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 06:19, 28 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

I could just remove it. I did not take the photo but I emailed her gallery for a photograph. Didn't realize how else to upload it. Chainsawpunk (talk) 16:25, 28 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi, when you e-mailed them for a photo, they probably assumed you just wanted to have the photo for your own use; not that you would release it into the public domain under commons licence so anyone can do whatever they want with it. That's why the upload system asks you to confirm that you have the right to do what you're about to do, before you upload it. This isn't just a case of uploading a photo to a website; it's a case of fundamentally changing the copyright conditions applicable to that photo. If you're now saying that this photo isn't actually your own work, then I will go and ask for it to be deleted. Thanks, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 16:17, 29 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations on your second new article! It looks really great and it's wonderful to learn about the history of her store Knobkerry. I saw that a show at The Sculpture Center, sorry to have missed that last year. It's also surprising to see redlinks for the Cedar Bar, Ken Tisa, Niloufar Emamifar, and SoiL Thornton and that we don't have articles for these yet. Ever onward! Oren Pinhassi moved to draftspace edit

An article you recently created, Oren Pinhassi, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. It should have at least three. And please remember that interviews, as primary sources, do not count towards GNG.(?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.Onel5969 TT me 14:10, 20 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi, @Onel5969, as a courtesy to the article creator @Chainsawpunk, I have added multiple reviews (and citations) in reliable sources such as Domus magazine, The Guardian, Contemporary Art Review, The Quietus, and Sculpture Magazine. Also, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant is a highly competitive notable award. I think he meets GNG now. Netherzone (talk) 19:47, 21 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Draft:Ken Tisa edit

Hello! I saw your draft at Articles for Creation on Ken Tisa. He is definitely notable! However because I have a conflict of interest, so I can't approve the draft. That will have to be left to another reviewer. I can, however, help develop it in draft space. Once in article space, I will not edit it directly but use the talk page to make suggestions for improvement. Netherzone (talk) 18:43, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Okay! Happy to hear any feedback. Thank you as always for your help. Chainsawpunk (talk) 18:53, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
I saw the comment on the draft; basically the draft must meet the criteria for notability per the general notability guideline WP:GNG - so multiple in depth reviews of his work in reliable sources. So I started a section in the draft called Reception that can list these publications with citations to help WP reviewers understand his importance and notability. The comment questioned how he meets NARTIST - the criteria can be found here: WP:NARTIST, he needs to meet ONE not all of those criteria. BTW, an artist does not have to meet both GNG and NARTIST, but it is good practice if they do. GNG alone is enough to pass. This is why I often include a section on Collections (criteria #4 of NARTIST) - consensus is that two or more collections in notable museums or national galleries meets this criteria.
So I think we should look for museum collections, so far I've searched MoMA (where he has shown but is not in the collection), the Whitney (where he has donated the work of another artist, but he himself is not in the collection), the Baltimore Museum (since he's taught in Baltimore for a looooong time), but so far have come up cold. However he does meet criteria #3, since he has been in shows like the Whitney Biennial, the show at MoMA/PS1, Philadelphia Museum, and the like.
I'll keep looking for collections, but in the meantime, try to find as many in-depth, verifiable reviews in art magazines, newspapers and art history/theory books such that there is no doubt about GNG. Netherzone (talk) 19:20, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Oh! I just saw that Theroadislong accepted it! Congratulations! Netherzone (talk) 19:21, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! I am going to continue to add to it, I think that he is not in any public collections, which is a little surprising. Kate Werble his dealer does not have any public collections listed on his bio and usually they would be listed there. Chainsawpunk (talk) 19:23, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
I too find this surprising, but I guess he's more of a gallery artist rather than a "museum artist". Do consider mentioning the Whitney Biennial in the article if it's not already there. Netherzone (talk) 19:26, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Added! Thank you. I can't seem to find the Philadelphia museum exhibition he was included in... Chainsawpunk (talk) 19:33, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
According to his CV he was in the 2019 Off the Wall: American Art to Wear, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, PA[1]. (a better source should be found since that's a primary source not secondary.) The catalog for the exhibit is on Google Books, but it is not searchable.
BTW, the CV states he's in the collection of the La Salle University Art Museum in Philadelphia, PA which is verifiable [2] so that's one museum collection. I'll bet others will turn up. Netherzone (talk) 19:52, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Another collection....There is a work of his that was made in collaboration with Kenward Elmslie in the National Gallery of Australia. [3] Netherzone (talk) 19:58, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
And here is an in-depth review in the Village Voice [4]. Netherzone (talk) 19:59, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
The work in collaboration with Kenward Elmslie is an artist's book, each of which has an original drawing by Tisa. It's also in the collection of the Otis College of Art & Design artist's books special collection [5]. Because it's a large edition, I'm pretty sure it can be found in other collections too. Netherzone (talk) 20:03, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! I will poke around for the catalogue Chainsawpunk (talk) 20:10, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Will incorporate the Village Voice review shortly as well. Chainsawpunk (talk) 20:20, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

I saw this press release from Ulterior Gallery with this info.[6] It's a primary source but it might be a place to start.
Minoru Yoshida’s works are in the collection of Ashiya City Museum of Art and History, Hyogo, Japan; Ohara Museum of Art, Okayama, Japan; Takamatsu Municipal Museum, Kagawa, Japan; Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, Niigata, Japan; and National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, Japan. Exhibition history and past awards include; Possible Futures: Japanese Postwar Art and Technology, Inter Communication Center, Tokyo, Japan (2005); Fluorescent Chrysanthemum: Contemporary Japanese Art, ICA London, UK (1968); Gendai no Kuukan ’68: Hikari to Kankyou [Contemporary Space ’68: Lights and Environment], Kobe Sogo Department Store, Hyogo (1968); Nihon Kokusai Bijutsu-ten [Japan International Art Exhibition], Ohara Museum Purchase Prize (1967), Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Tokyo and Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, Kyoto, Japan ; Mainichi Gendai Bijutsu-ten [Mainichi Contemporary Art Exhibition], Concour Award (1966). One of Yoshida’s most important works from the Gutai era, Bisexual Flower (1969), first shown at the World Expo in Osaka, Japan in 1970, has been exhibited in many Gutai retrospectives, most recently in Gutai: Splended Playground at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2013.
Also found this [7] - it's a video lecture on his work that may work as an External link.
And last but not least, and not from a reliable source, but it seems he also won a world record for doing 10,507 non-stop push-ups if it's the same Minoru Yoshida. [8]. With a reliable source, that would be a dandy bit of trivia. Netherzone (talk) 04:35, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
I kept seeing the pushup fact! Couldn't figure out if it was real or not. I will dig around and start to bulk up. Thank you as always for all of your help and guidance. Chainsawpunk (talk) 18:28, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Netherzone: I keep finding competing facts on the push up record... some sources say it was a different Minoru Yoshida some sources claim it was him Chainsawpunk (talk) 14:37, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
It should probably be left out then. Netherzone (talk) 19:19, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Hoary Hi! I'm not sure how to reply to your comment on the draft page. My logic for why there should be a separate page for EABA is because I noticed other brands with separate pages for designers, and under the assumption that the pages would further distinguish themselves as the brand grows/changes. I tried to stick mostly to her professional life, but there are some articles in vogue and other fashion magazines I had trouble accessing behind a paywall that talk about her in a more personal light - if you give me some time I will try to access these and beef up this section so as to make the two pages more distinct and offer different information on this page.. But if you think it's redundant/a lost cause I can just delete it. Let me know Chainsawpunk (talk) 15:09, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
For those other pairs (article about a company named after its designer or boss plus article about that person), perhaps the person is additionally notable for work outside that one company. (In particular, I believe that a number of designers work rather inconspicuously within well-established companies, then become more conspicuous within these, and only later form their own companies or have companies/brands named after them. Others primarily work for their brands but also do things on the side, as it were.) But my knowledge of the fashion business (and fashion) is close to non-existent. How about asking for advice at WT:WikiProject Fashion? -- Hoary (talk) 22:20, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
