Request reason:

I have repeated edited a number of pages that were being left uncreated or incorrect. Today I was creating pages for the coaching staff. Division 1 coaches are an elite group and there are entire pages dedicated to assistants like them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_NCAA_Division_I_FBS_football_coaches I wrote factually and simply. I corrected my previous copyright errors. If I need to promise to avoid topics of relevance to Texas State, then ok. I spoke with SshibumXZ about my previous errors. I was not trying to re-create to cause an issue. It was an error on my part. I was not trying to waste anyone's time. FBS coaches are notable. Several of them have received verified blue checks from Twitter due to similar notability checks. Americanfootballupdater (talk) 01:18, 17 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Decline reason:

You haven't explained how your edits would be different if we unblocked you. Also note, Twitter verified checks don't establish WP:NOTE. Yamla (talk) 11:56, 17 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

I would like to become a productive member of WikiProject College Football because of my interest there. I will avoid topics related to my employer to avoid a COI, especially when it comes to pages for persons. I have already been educated on my errors on copyright. I am here to make Wikipedia a better encyclopedia and I am frustrated by the assumption without response that I am not. Americanfootballupdater (talk) 13:59, 17 February 2018 (UTC) @Yamla: Since you were the administrator that confirmed my indefinite block, I want to reach out to you and ask for leniency. I made copyright, COI, and notability errors that I acknowledge. I seek to help improve the encyclopedia and not act in self-interest or promotional activity. When I initially created the posts, I did copy the website bio and added coaching history boxes. Those were deleted for copyright infringement. After talking to the user that submitted it for deletion, I tried to repost and paraphrase. I obviously did not change enough and was again hit with quick deletion. I made a last attempt that removed all of the information from their university bios and truly put it all in my own words. An IP user then asked that I be blocked for my activity. I was not trying to be a nuisance or cause issues. I thought I was fixing my issues. I do work at the university that I was editing about, and I understand the possible COI. I can leave others to create those biographies. I mistakenly thought that those coaches "ought to have a page" but I did not adequately understand WP:NCOLLATH. I do now and that will not be an issue. I would like to work on stubs and in other capacities to add value to the encyclopedia.Americanfootballupdater (talk) 15:21, 19 February 2018 (UTC) As I note below, there are specific pages in the College Football WikiProject that I could assist on, like the incorrect App St one that I reference. I was previously editing pages related to the history of Texas State football that I was doing research for the university. When I tried to create pages for several coaches, I did not think that they were not notable enough. Through my use of the encyclopedia, I believed that FBS assistant coaches qualified. And though I understand the COI because I worked at the university, several of my pages that I created have been since linked to others, adding more robustness to Wikipedia. Prior to my creating pages and doing research about the history and early beginnings of the program here, even the university itself had multiple errors in the media guide. Information provided by cfbwarehouse and other websites dedicated to the long past were incorrect, mainly confusing the high school San Marcos Baptist Academy (formerly San Marcos Academy) and Texas State University (Southwest Texas State Normal School located in San Marcos). In the 1900s and 1910s, it was routine for colleges and high schools to play one another. I proved through newspaper articles at the time and school yearbooks that there were errors elsewhere on the web. I enjoy digging through history and would like to be able to add to this resource. Americanfootballupdater (talk) 11:57, 12 April 2018 (UTC) I have been blocked for a few months already. Is a t-ban more appropriate for my errors rather than an indefinite block?Americanfootballupdater (talk) 12:01, 12 April 2018 (UTC) After I am unblocked, I want to make sure that there is a 2018 team page for all FBS football teams with an accurate schedule. All dates are now released (though still always subject to change). This is a good time of the year to make a push to update this section of the encyclopedia.Americanfootballupdater (talk) 01:31, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Comment — I genuinely believe that Americanfootballupdater was acting in good faith, and deserve another chance, though a t-ban on areas related to their employer may not be a bad idea.

  • Comment As the editor who repeatedly chased down the copyright violations--and it bears noting that after the first batch were deleted, Americanfootballupdater posted them a second time, with copious copyright issues--I'm less sanguine about restoring editing privileges. Even if he agrees to avoid subjects that constitute WP:COI (and note the edit history, devoted solely to Texas State football subjects), the partially deleted explanations for unblocking aren't very encouraging [1], [2], [3]. I'm not convinced he understands yet why the assistant coaches at his school would not meet notability guidelines; that using articles on other coaches as examples is not a valid point of comparison (especially since some of them have notability issues, too); or that persistent re-creation of the articles was itself disruptive, and still may think that aside from copyright violations, what he did was okay. 2601:188:180:11F0:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 03:03, 18 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment - I did all of the other research about the founding history of Texas State and this is only place it is published. It is more accurate here than any other place including university media guides. You can check my work if you wish to. I have also since read about WP:NOTE and understand that notability is limited to award winners or if there is some other special story that revolves around them. I would argue that any FBS coordinator is notable but I do understand the criteria now. I also have edited other articles, but some were under an older user that I could no longer access due to loss of an old email, and some were while I was not logged in so not logged here. Americanfootballupdater (talk) 03:39, 18 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
    • If you'd "argue that any FBS coordinator is notable", and you think that notability is conferred by having won an award or "some other special story that revolves around them", you have not read and understood basic notability guidelines, per WP:GNG, and ought not yet be creating biographies here. If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, it is presumed to be suitable for a stand-alone article or list. This has nothing to do with an award or special story. At any rate, I've opined at this page often enough. An administrator can weigh this. 2601:188:180:11F0:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 03:49, 18 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment - I am entitled to both my opinion, while still understanding WP:NCOLLATH. They are not mutually exclusive. I look forward to being reinstated to show that I can follow the guidelines put in place by Wikipedia. On that notability page it says "Examples would include head coaches, well-known assistant coaches, or players who: Have won a national award (such as those listed in Template:College Football Awards or the equivalent in another sport), or established a major NCAA Division I record. Were inducted into the hall of fame in their sport (for example, the College Football Hall of Fame). Gained national media attention as an individual, not just as a player for a notable team. Very rarely, a player may gain national media attention despite not being on a notable team, such as Lauren Hill." I apologize for not directly quoting it but rather paraphrasing. It does specifically say that winning an "award" or special story does prove notability. Americanfootballupdater (talk) 04:47, 18 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

    • Thank you @SshibumXZ:. I understand that a backlog can develop. I hope that I can be reviewed and unblocked. And I suppose I have to wait a little longer for that. Americanfootballupdater (talk) 02:36, 23 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Unfortunately, in almost 2 months - no admin has been comfortable unblocking. I will leave this request open for a few more days, but soon we will have to close it. Perhaps a more convincing unblock request would help - perhaps the issue would be better raised at AN. I'm not sure. SQLQuery me! 01:37, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • @SQL: I do not understand why someone would not feel comfortable. I acknowledge my error and was trying to correct the initial post in real time while talking to another user @SshibumXZ:. I was acting in good faith, and though ignorance is no excuse, it is the main cause of my mistakes. I wish to make valuable contributions to the encyclopedia. As you note, I have been blocked for almost 2 months and I have long since learned the errors that I made. I am not a person that is creating multiple accounts or trying to cause any problems. I wish to add to the community.Americanfootballupdater (talk) 11:39, 12 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • @Bbb23: Can you please review my indef block? Would a t-ban suffice? I have already been blocked for nearly two months. I would like to show you more how I can add to the encyclopedia, like the error I pointed out to UCO2009bluejay that has now been fixed. Americanfootballupdater (talk) 02:07, 14 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • @Boing! said Zebedee: I saw that you have actively been reviewing some of the requests for unblock. Can you look at mine, please? I genuinely wish to make this a better encyclopedia and made COI errors as well as copyright errors that I thought that I was fixing in real time with an Admin. My re-creation of a deleted article caused unnecessary work for someone and I understand the notability issues involved as well as my personal COI. I would love to share my knowledge and passion for college football while avoiding directly editing any articles related to Texas State. I do not think I was biased in my previous additions about the early years of the program (adding dates and records etc), but we all hold intrinsic bias and that is the need to avoid COI. Americanfootballupdater (talk) 01:47, 26 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
User:SQL seems to be on it now and has asked you some questions, below. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 06:03, 26 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Alright, let's take a look at this. Don't feel like you have to answer any of these questions - I'm tying to get some context on this block, and how to resolve everything. In your own words - what behavior do you believe led to your block? SQLQuery me! 04:14, 26 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
What topics do you believe you need to be t-banned from in order to contribute to the encyclopedia productively? Are you being paid to edit the encyclopedia? SQLQuery me! 04:20, 26 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
    • @SQL: The direct action that lead to my block was the repeated attempts to create pages for FBS assistant coaches that work at Texas State. The first error was copying their bio from the university website which is against copyright here. The second error was re-creating with some changes after speedy deletion. I tried a third time and was blocked. At the time, I was trying to resolve the copyright issue with SshibumXZ. In the process of the unblock request, I disclosed that I worked at Texas State and this creates an additional COI (The COI already existed). I also was confused/uneducated about notability requirements for FBS assistant coaches on the encyclopedia in the first place. If re-instated, I would avoid directly editing on the topic of Texas State due to my current COI. I would like to be able to request edits without violation. I am NOT being paid to edit wikipedia. I just want to update pages about Texas State that would match other school's pages. The 2018 page I made has practically not been touched since I made it. Unfortunately, I was blocked so the staff is not accurate and neither is the schedule. I am not making subjective additions. Purely fact based objective fact. For the near future with the encyclopedia, I want to spend more time helping the college football wiki and looking at some of the active projects.Americanfootballupdater (talk) 02:20, 27 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • @331dot: I'll defer to you. If you are satisfied that the user will behave, it's okay with me if you unblock them. I don't watch football-related articles. Drmies has prohibited me from doing so. I'll leave it to you to monitor the user to ensure his compliance with any editing restrictions.--Bbb23 (talk) 14:09, 9 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
    • 331dot et al., Bbb23 is in fact under a topic ban; he can't edit football articles neutrally or knowledgeably. It's that old combination of POV and CIR. I'm fine with this person being unblocked. I am not sure what all led to the block (update: I read the old talk page. It's clear now, haha). They obviously have a COI of sorts but that's not in itself a reason to disallow them in the future, especially if what they're writing up is 1908 football teams, but they do need to acknowledge this more explicitly, on their user page and elsewhere. When it comes to a 2018 team their edits obviously need to be impeccably neutral and sourced. I would also expect a more liberal use of edit summaries--and of course a solid knowledge of our copyright policies.

An [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Americanfootballupdater&oldid=826074583 older version of this talk page" had a section called "Notability, COI and copyright violation issues": avoiding all of those issues must be a condition, and the editor will need to say so. Violations will likely lead to an immediate reblock. Drmies (talk) 14:53, 9 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

  • Americanfootballupdater, I would be willing to unblock you on the condition that you agree to the following:
  1. a topic ban on editing Texas State football-related articles directly(edit requests on talk pages will be permitted)
  2. improve your use of edit summaries, and their detail
  3. formally declare your COI on your user page and on talk pages of football related articles that you edit
  4. avoid any copyright violation issues
If these conditions are violated, you will risk being reblocked. Please respond to these points specifically. Thank you. 331dot (talk) 15:06, 9 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
    • @331dot: Thank you. I do agree to refrain from editing Texas State football articles directly. I may use {{request edit}} when appropriate. I will be more detialed in my edit summaries. I will state on my user page that I work at Texas State University, and I can mention on football articles that I edit. Is this mention to disclose some COI? Is it necessary to do so for every edit I make on a football page or only in a potential edit request of a Texas State article? I do not intend on violating copyright. I understand that if I violate these conditions that I may be reblocked. Thank you. Americanfootballupdater (talk) 22:21, 10 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it is meant to disclose your COI, and I think you should when editing any college football related article, as the more open you are, the better your edits will be received. Since you agree, I will lift the block. 331dot (talk) 22:38, 10 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@331dot: For cleanliness, can I remove this block and subsequent conversation from this talk page? I know that it will all be archived.
