Questions about rules

I'm trying hard to understand this thing but each time I think I do... I don't! Now I have 2 questions:

  1. If I put a rule like: 5 /\W(D|d)esign\W/ shouldn't it exclude words like designed, designated, etc. and flag only design ?
  2. It is said: ...If the final score is above the threshold the article is in... Then if I put @@15@@, shouldn't we get only scores of 16 and more (not 15) ?

--AlainR345Techno-Wiki-Geek 23:51, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

The answer to your first question is yes. However, the bot is not case sensitive so you can lose the (D|d) and just put d like so: 5 /\Wdesign\W/ Look at the rules Alex created for the Russia feed and you'll see what I mean. I know that others have done what you did, but that's because they didn't know what they were doing either. It still works, but it's unnecessary. Follow the example of the guy who created the bot! The answer to your second question is no. If your threshold is @@15@@ then you only need 15 points to be included in the search results, not 16. The instructions were wrong; I just fixed them. Attention

Hi, love the bot, helps me to narrow my sporadic new article patrolling. Your bot seems to have logged out again though.Synchronism (talk) 09:18, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

Odd issue at WP:BC

Looking at the bot log for this project and checking out the creation dates of the articles listed there, the bot appears to be searching and assessing new articles and in its recent run it cleaned out the old list of articles that had become stale in our results display but for some reason the new finds are not turning up there. Are others having this issue? Is there some change that has produced this result? --KenWalker | Talk 16:20, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Apparently the situation is similar for WP Croatia. The search result page is now empty, same as with WP BC. GregorB (talk) 23:44, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
It seems that the bot is not working all the way through the master list before stopping and restarting at the beginning of the list. Those of us watching feeds from the bottom third of the list have not gotten any results in over a week, while those feeds at the top of the list are getting daily updates. Sarilox (talk) 03:39, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
The bot seems to be back on the job, thanks to whoever it was that got it going. --KenWalker | Talk 02:15, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Rule assistance

I have a rule: /\[\[\s*category:[^\]]*song*/, /\[\[\s*category:[^\]]*songwriter/ The idea was to select anything that contains the word song in the category and exclude songwriters. Problem is it picks up on a few completely unrelated categories and I have no idea how. here is an example or one meeting the critera but I don't know how. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 13:59, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

The asterisk after the g is saying that the g is not necessary, so consequently the rule is matching any category with son in it. - Sarilox (talk) 19:05, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

Missing search results

Any suggestions with this one, please? User:AlexNewArtBot/OxfordLog works fine, but User:AlexNewArtBot/OxfordSearchResult doesn't (spot the redlink). Do I need to start the page off, or issue additional instructions to the bot? Thanks, BencherliteTalk 10:08, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi Alex, If you are away then I guess you may not get this message for a while, but I wanted to let you know that at Project Gastropods we have not gotten any new listings from AlexNewArtBot for the last 5 days despite my creating new articles each day. Using on existing articles

Can this bot (or a similar one) be used to mark existing articles based on regex rules? I an trying to jump start a project and tag all the articles that match the criteria, not just the new ones. BTW, what constitutes a new article? Thanks! --Codrin.B (talk) 02:30, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Bloc party

Hi AlexNAB, Special:WhatLinksHere/Bloc_party_(politics) shows that only your pages still link to 'Block Party (politics)'. The relevant article simply mentions the meaning as a party of an 'electoral bloc' (which redirects to 'electoral alliance'), then comprehensively describes parties mainly of the Eastern Bloc. Clearly spelled without a 'k' (unlike its German term Blockpartei), and for both meanings it is about any one of many parties, small 'p'. Therefore, 'Block Party (politics)' was moved. You find it directly as Bloc party (politics). In case you would update all your links, you might ask deletion of the redirect page 'Block Party (politics)' that has no reason to exist any further as it is a very unlikely misspelling. In fact, its sheer existence might rather cause misspellings. Kind regards.▲ SomeHuman 2011-02-08 04:59 (UTC)

Bot Rules for WP:STUB templates

I copied the stub template rules from User:AlexNewArtBot/Australia as $$Canada-band-stub$$ for User:AlexNewArtBot/Canadianmusic. What is the correct syntax for WP:STUB templates? Does the bot look at the html wiki syntax of the article as the $$ usage seems to imply? The bot did not pick up Gramercy Riffs (band). It had the {{Canada-band-stub}} within the article until another bot sucked it out! Thanks very much. Argolin (talk) 01:26, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Script to find the unpatrolled pages in your search results

Hi Tedder. As you know, I made a script that reads your search results and marks all that haven't been patrolled with a button linked to the page (the same draft of the page that would be reached if visiting it via Special:NewPages). As far as I know there are no problems with the script and it works with most skins (i.e. Vector, Monobook, Chick, Modern, MySkin, and Simple). I wondered if you might like to advertise the script on the main page. I'm not seeking reward or recognition; it just seems that since the script was developed specifically to work with your search results, this is the best place for people using the results to see that this script is available.

importScript("User:Fred_Gandt/getUnpatrolledOfAlexNewArtBotResultsPages.js");

Is this bot defunct?

Why has User:AlexNewArtBot/ScotlandSearchResult not been updated for 7 days? And why is User:AlexNewArtBot/EnglandSearchResult displaying "This user is currently blocked"? --Mais oui! (talk) 06:38, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

It's only blocked because it's been superseded by TedderBot by User:Tedder. See User:AlexNewArtBot. I have noticed that it's been quite a while since the new pages have been updated. Don't know why. Voceditenore (talk) 09:27, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
Ta. Can you point me to the new EnglandSearchResult page at TedderBot (if there is one)? --Mais oui! (talk) 14:41, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
Hey folks. Sorry, it's been a busy week, I see there is a problem with the bot and I'll get it fixed over the weekend. That explains Scotland. For England and any others, the canonical list of "what the bot looks for" is here: User:AlexNewArtBot/Master. I don't see England. I also notice there are no rules for England here: User:AlexNewArtBot/England (if the word 'England' was on /Master, it would look for them there).
Alex's bot was down for a long time and he was out of contact, so I wrote a new version from scratch and open-sourced the code to make my own bus factor higher. I'm using rules and "configuration" in the AlexNewArtBot userspace to keep from breaking project page links. tedder (talk) 17:35, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

New request and retrospective listings

I would like to put in a new request to pick up new articles on the topic of World War I (can anyone help with this?). I don't think this is currently covered (though they would get picked up in the general military history search). Am I correct in saying that the history of the WWII search result indicates that the bot has been looking for World War II articles since 2007? Would just copying the WWII rules and tweaking them work? It would be good to have WWI topics picked up on, as lots of articles have been (and are being) created with interest generated by the centenary commemorations and events (2014-2018). Would it be at all possible to run a special search to try and pick up on the rate at which articles were created from (say) 2012 onwards (ideally all the way back to the beginning of Wikipedia in 2001, but that might be pushing it). What I'd like to come up with is a way to track the rate of article creation in a topic area like this (and things like the earliest articles created and so on). If you have a list of articles, is there an easy way to get the date of article creation for all of them (I am aware that articles created from pre-existing redirects can be difficult to detect)? Carcharoth (talk) 08:22, 30 July 2016 (UTC)

@Carcharoth: Copying the WWII rules would be a good start. Take a look at old versions of User:WP 1.0 bot/Tables/Project/World War I for article counts. --Bamyers99 (talk) 16:42, 30 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I took a look at the WWII rules, but am a bit lost as to how to modify them or what they mean. Hopefully someone can help! Carcharoth (talk) 17:43, 30 July 2016 (UTC)
@Carcharoth: I created some basic WWI rules at User:AlexNewArtBot/WWI. The results are at User:AlexNewArtBot/WWISearchResult. Feel free to add to the rules. A \s will match a space, tab or carriage return. --Bamyers99 (talk) 23:36, 31 July 2016 (UTC)
Many thanks for that. It is very difficult to decide what to put in the rules. I will try and refine that at some point. Carcharoth (talk) 00:08, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

Metro (board game) in User:AlexNewArtBot/WomeninredSearchResult

How and why did Metro (board game) end up in User:AlexNewArtBot/WomeninredSearchResult? Was it because the text includes the word "Queen", which has nothing to do with actual queens but instead the publishing company Queen Games? JIP | Talk 00:17, 3 November 2020 (UTC)

Someone created the article Kraken galaxy, a hypothetical galaxy that supposedly collided with the Milky way around 11 billion years ago (with that timescale, we can't really be certain).
