Jerry Grote & the Colt 45s

I brought up a debate concerning Jerry Grote and the Colt 45s at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Baseball. I'd like your input on the topic.--Johnny Spasm (talk) 00:19, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure the sort of canvassing you've done in this is entirely appropriate. I don't have a problem with raising the debate to the WT:BASEBALL page, but then putting a note on my talk page? I've not editted or otherwise shown interest in the topic or in related articles. Yes I'm a member of the project and have contributed to discussions, but don't you think if I'm likely to have an opinion that I think is worth expressing on it, that I'm likely to be watching the project's talk page already, and so I don't need the personalised invitation. Given the specifity of the debate, I shouldn't be invited to it.  Afaber012  (talk)  03:49, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
No intention to be inappropriate. I raised a debate, and sent a bunch of Wikipedia's baseball fans messages saying that I did.--Johnny Spasm (talk) 22:32, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

Heyo! Could you stop by in an hour or so? Nearly done adding ABs finally! Staxringold talkcontribs 02:09, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

No worries. I've just had a quick look and I think its looking good. I did fix up a couple of minor things I noticed: the 2000 AL runner up column only had the #HR once but two sets of ABs, and I got the sorting for the NL table done as well. I'm happy to sign off on it being FL once the last of the ABs are done.  Afaber012  (talk)  03:23, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Claxton Shield PR

Yes, that is much more clear. I did some minor copyediting this time around. Please revert anything you don't agree with. I have a question about this sentence: "It varied from the 2009 Claxton Shield by expanding the season to include ten rounds." Would it be helpful to add how many rounds the 2009 season involved? You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 18:21, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of 2010 Claxton Shield

Hello, I just wanted to introduce myself and let you know I am glad to be reviewing the article 2010 Claxton Shield you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria.   This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Grondemar 19:04, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

I just posted my review for the article and placed it   on hold pending addressing of my concerns. Sorry for taking so long. Grondemar 05:15, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Hi, are you still working on this? The article has been on hold for nearly a month now and hasn't been edited since July 11. Grondemar 13:00, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
I re-reviewed and   passed the article as a good article. Congratulations! Grondemar 02:05, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Info box

Hey there, do we have an info box for Australian baseball representatives? Thanks, Spy007au (talk) 01:33, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

To my knowledge, the only infoboxes for people to do with baseball is the Major Leaguers one, and possibly minor leagues, etc. I don't know about one for Australian players, either as people who have represented Australia at Olympics/World Cups/WBCs, or as players in ABL/Claxton Shield. But now that you've prodded me to think about it, we probably should have one.  Afaber012  (talk)  07:21, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, I agree, we should have one for Australian representatives. Dan027 is very good at engineering these. Suggest the info box includes, Olympics/World Cups/WBCs and friendlies, as well as ABL & Claxton Shield. Do you want to ask Dan027? Cheers, Spy007au (talk) 22:31, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Copa Libertadores

Hello

I want to bring up something that has been troubling me. On the GA nominations page, the Copa Libertadores page has been ignored for a pretty long time while the main reviewers perform reviews and other subjects. I don't want to sound like a nag but other nominees (which are about a week old) have been taken faster than my nomination.

Since this is a mass message to the most frequent reviewers (I only counted four main reviewers), could you at least tell me if an article needs to be a GA before nominating it to become a FA? Or at least point me to a reviewer that could review my nomination? Thanks.

Knowsley Road photographs

The first play-off game at Knowsley Road could be the last game to be played there. It's looking likely that not that many more games will be played at Knowsley Road, Belle Vue, the Willows or Wheldon Road and we have very few free-to-use images of them (although the ones we have, particularly of Wheldon Road are very good). I wouldn't like to see our material on these historic grounds go the same way as the very limited material we have for the historic Boulevard Ground, Thrum Hall or the Parkside Ground. If you will be at the next play-off game at Knowsely Road or if you are able to get any pictures of these grounds I would be very gratefull if you could upload them to commons. I can sort out the categories and such if you don't have any time. Alternatively if you know of anyone who could it would be much appreciated. I am unlikely to go to any away games next season because of my current circumstances so will not be able to contribute towards this, although I shall endevour to get some great images at home games (I've a load of the CC final to upload but there sat it a very long backlog).

Kind Regards, Mtaylor848 (talk) 20:42, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

I would say that is a little rude saying that the messaging was worse than spam. I did not send it indiscriminately but to users who were in the category of rugby league fans and users who had made many edits to any of the above articles recently. The fact that you are in Australia was unknown to me, not that it makes the question all that impertinent. In live in Yorkshire but have images of Portugal and the Netherlands to add. Mtaylor848 (talk) 10:02, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Like I said... actually I didn't say it but it fits: indiscriminate. If you used people in Category:Wikipedian rugby league fans, why didn't you contact another 100+ people? If you contacted people "who had made many edits to any of the above articles recently", why the hell did you contact me? I haven't heard of any of the places you mentioned above, let alone edited any of their articles, let alone made "many" edits "recently". If you'd posted at WP:RL instead, where there are a great many people actively working on and have interest in rugby league articles, you'd have reached not only a larger audience with a single post but an audience more likely to have either the resources you were looking for or the ability to source them.  Afaber012  (talk)  12:08, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Melbourne Aces Roster

Hi

I spent some time filling in the Melbourne Aces roster 2010-11, then a user Special Cases has undone my work (without citing why) and apparently given me a 'level 1 warning' (without citing why). Do you have any idea as to why this is the case? I referenced all material appropriately, and the rosters I have filled in for Sydney and Canberra haven't been removed...

I asked politely why on his talk page, and it was removed within minutes.

I'd like to know why as I am hesitant to contribute further if my work is simply going to be rejected. If I am apparently doing something wrong it's best for all parties if I am notified of WHAT I have done wrong, and HOW I can avoid the mistake.

Thanks --Qwertyqwas (talk) 08:34, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm not sure why he did that. For some reason he thought you were testing something, and that's not supposed to be done in articles/templates/etc where readers can see. It looks like he was using a program that at least semi-automates checking articles for vandalism and other inappropriate things, and presumably it popped your changes up as a false positive.
I've reverted it, and updated it so all the flags are shown now. (I did a google search on the names using "<name> site:baseball.com.au" and they all came up as players from local leagues, hence the Aussie flags.) I've got to admit that I was going to remove the flags when you put them in the Blue Sox' roster, as there'd been a discussion about putting flags in the MLB roster templates that decided against it, but after seeing the Cavalry's lineup the flags seem appropriate to me.  Afaber012  (talk)  10:40, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

ABL linescores & stats

Well done on updating the ABL linescores and stats so far! I just spent a good two and a half hours updating it; I doubt it takes you that long though. Hopefully next time I do it, it shouldn't take that long as I'll have a good idea of what needs to be done. Qwertyqwas  (talk)  17:15, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

I've had a bit of practice, with previous Claxton Shields, World Cups and the couple of Aussie national team pages. :) These are nice box scores to work off though - a lot of the ones I've worked off from years gone by make you work to find the details to put in, especially for things like the number of home runs/wins/losses/saves for the tournament. These ones give it to you on a silver platter!  Afaber012  (talk)  20:51, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

Oeltjen

Why did you change all the dates in the Trent Oeljen article? All other Major League player articles use the other date style... it makes no sense to change them. Spanneraol (talk) 20:25, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

Because according to WP:STRONGNAT, an article with strong national ties to a particular English-speaking country should use the common date format of that country. If just being Australian isn't a strong enough tie, he's represented Australia at top level international baseball tournaments including the World Cup and WBC, which made him notable and worthy of his own article on Wikipedia prior to his first MLB appearance.  Afaber012  (talk)  22:33, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

Melbourne Aces

Hi, obviously im not a wiki nerd, and just wanted to see the Melbourne Aces page in the same style as the MLB teams, that show both the Logo and the Cap insignia. Im very offended that you called my updates "vandalism". Can you then change the style to show both on all the ABL info boxes. As the logo isnt the same as the cap design in every team. I feel that this is a productive step towards a more informative ABL info box.

yeh ill let you do that, im not wasting another 2 hours trying to make it better, only to have it called vandalism.

List of Major League players from Australia

Don't want to touch your baby too much, so I thought I'd just suggest here something about Kevin Jordan (baseball) being an Australian citizen when he was in the majors, but not when he debuted. Similar to like on Flintoff & Dunn. Quietly as well, he's the new manager for the Bandits this season. JRA_WestyQld2 Talk 16:25, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

First, I wasn't ignoring you, I was unexpectedly without a computer for a while, so haven't been able to contribute. Luckily there weren't any more issues brought up with the list and it's passed.
I was thinking about mentioning him somewhere, but I couldn't find anywhere else that considered him to be on the list. The ABF seems to agree about which number Aussie we're up to. The other part was that the list's scope was set out as players born in Australia or who have represented Australia in international competition - that way they've "declared" their sporting nationality. I don't know if he's a dual citizen or not, or if he ever made an announcement to the effect of wanting to play for Australia.  Afaber012  (talk)  20:38, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Question

I just undertook a revamping of Hitting for the cycle and split the list of players out from the article discussing the event in hopes of obtaining a more worldwide view of hitting for the cycle. Do you have any information on cycles hit in the top-level Australian leagues? There's a section for "other national leagues" right now that has to be hidden because I have no info. If you do, feel free to add! Cheers! — KV5Talk • 13:49, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately not, or at least not in a way that is easily available. I can tell you that one potential source of info seems to indicate that it hasn't happened in the new ABL, but it'll take a more thorough search of other sources to be certain of that. In terms of the previous leagues and tournaments, there probably won't be a complete listing available, where examples of it happening - if it has - being stumbled across when looking for other stuff. I'll keep an eye out though.  Afaber012  (talk)  23:34, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

medal type

Hi Afaber012, thanks for fixing the third place tie in the baseball world cup tournament box. Any reason why you also changed the medal type back to 'world cup'? I think the 'world minor' type looks better as the colors come out more. Zwart (talk) 22:43, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

No problem. I set the template up a while ago and have used that type of fix for a couple of scenarios in the past where there were ties. (I think it was some of the Asian Championships but I'm not too sure.)
When I created the template, I had found the different types of medal icons, and me being the somewhat "everything must be organised and color coded" type of nerd, decided to use them with distinct purposes. The reality is that its purely my decision from however long ago, but to my knowledge when the template has been used the medal type has been applied consistently; other world cups with that template also use the coloured globe version. I made the change for that consistency reason. I don't mind if the coloured globe versions get pulled and the plain gold/silver/bronze world versions get used instead, but I think if its done it should be done across the board: change the template rather than just the one article.  Afaber012  (talk)  07:04, 18 October 2011 (UTC)
OK thanks for the explanation. I agree that we should aim for consistency. I did use the minor medal type in the table at the end of the article. Let's keep them both as they are. Zwart (talk) 20:19, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

Page request

Hi, We are a Baseball Club on the Gold Coast. Can we request a page to be created...new to wikipedia. Thank you in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Coomeracubs (talkcontribs) 00:38, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

From what I can see of the club (I'm assuming its the club at www.coomera.baseball.com.au) at the moment I would have to say no for a couple of reasons. One is that given the time I have available to me, I concentrate on the topics I'm familiar with. The second is that from what I can see from a quick googling of the club's name, I don't think it qualifies as a "notable" topic. By that I mean that there is a general notability guidleine that says the topic of an article should have "... received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject ...", which my very quick search didn't find. A more baseball-specific guideline also exists at the baseball notability guideline, which though not a definitive measurement of notability, gives a list of criteria that is used to work out which topics are expected to meet the general guideline. In terms of teams and clubs, it cuts off at the national level.
I appreciate the request, but I think that even if I were in a position to create the article, it'd likely be nominated to be deleted for the above reasons. I'm curious though how you came to me to make the request. For future reference, I'm one of many editors, and am part of a group called the Australian baseball task force, which itself is part of the Baseball WikiProject. If you have questions, comments, concerns, etc about baseball topics, posting at their talk pages can reach many users at once.  Afaber012  (talk)  08:39, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
