Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation is a holding company of the Eurus Energy Group, Japan's largest wind power developer.[4] Eurus Energy is a joint venture of the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and Toyota Tsusho Corporation and is headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo. It is an Independent Power Producer involved in wind power and photovoltaic power projects in the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Norway, Japan, and South Korea.[5] The total capacity of power plants in operation is 1,986.23 megawatts.[6] "Eurus" is the god of the east wind in Greek mythology.

History edit

Tomen Corporation [ja], a general trading company (sogo shosha) acquired by Toyota Tsusho in 2006, launched electricity business in October 1986. In the following year Tomen started operation of a 5MW wind power plant in the Mojave Desert in the US state of California. Two more wind farms in the same area began commercial operation in 1989 and 1990. Tomen then entered the wind power markets of the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain, and Japan in 1990s.

In November 2001, Tomen established a wholly-owned subsidiary, Tomen Power Holdings Corporation, which spun off from its power business. In 2002 TEPCO took a 50% stake in this wind power developer, renamed Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation. TEPCO increased its stake to 60% in 2004.

In December 2005, Eurus Energy completed the first Korean project, Gangwon Wind Park.

Starting from the South-West Sunchang Photovoltaic Power Plant project completed in May 2008, the company expanded into photovotalic power generation as the secondary line of business.

On March 11, 2011, Eurus Energy acquired the Korean photovoltaic power plant of Jindosun Park Inc. from JA Solar, a major Chinese manufacturer of photovoltaic cells. The 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami occurred on the same day. The disaster forced TEPCO to sell off assets and compensate for losses associated with the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. As a result of this downsizing, Toyota Tsusho purchased 20 % of Eurus Energy shares from TEPCO and became the primary shareholder.

In July 2011, Eurus Energy completed the first Norwegian project, Høg-Jæren EnergiPark.

In August 2011, Eurus Energy commissioned the first American solar farm, Avenal Solar Facility.

In May 2012, Eurus Energy acquired the first Australian wind farm, Hallet 5, from AGL Energy.

The company is now preparing to build solar farms in Japan because the new feed-in tariff scheme put into effect in July 2012 is expected to increase profits of wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, and small hydro power businesses.
