editThe following list shows World Series championships (since 1903) by metropolitan area. Championships are assigned to the metropolitan area where the franchise played at the time that it won the championship.[1]

editThe following list shows NHL championships (since 1918) by metropolitan area. Although this list heavily overlaps with Stanley Cup championships, the NHL champion was not the Stanley Cup champion in 1919 and 1925.[2][3][4]

editDuring the 20th century, the AAFC, AFL, ABA, and WHA all challenged the existing major professional sports leagues, and all eventually merged with the established leagues or had multiple franchises absorbed by them.[12] Additionally, the North American Soccer League operated as the top-level, major professional soccer league in the United States from 1968 to 1984.[13] The following list shows AAFC championships (1946–1949),[6] AFL championships (1960–1965),[6] ABA championships (1968–1976),[8] WHA championships (1973–1979),[3] and NASL championships[14] (1968–1984) by metropolitan area.
