North Nias Regency is a regency located on the northern part of Nias Island in the North Sumatra province of Indonesia. It was created from several northern districts that were formerly part of Nias Regency in 2008. With area of 1,242.14 square kilometers, it has population of 147,274 according to 2020 Indonesian census and 150,780 according to the 2022 estimate by Statistics Indonesia. The regency seat is located at Lotu.

The regency was once part of then-larger Nias Regency. The split from Nias Regency was based on Law Number 45 of 2008.[2]

Geography edit

The regency includes 15 other smaller islands, six of which are inhabited. It borders Nias Regency and West Nias Regency in the south, Gunungsitoli city in the east, and Indian Ocean in the north and the west. North Nias Regency has a rugged terrains with hills with height varies between 0 and 478 meters above sea level. Due to this terrain, the regency possess fifty rivers and streams all over its area.[3]

Located close to the equator, North Nias possess a high rainfall with average rainy day per month of 23 days. Being surrounded by Indian Ocean makes the regency also experienced strong with average speed of 5.4 knots and frequently encounters storms. Storms usually happened between September to November, but occasionaly also happens in late August. The regency has average temperature yearly of 26.4 degrees Celcius with maximum average of 30.6C and lowest average of 23.3C.[3]

Demographics edit

The majority of the regency's population are Protestant with minorities of Catholic and Muslims. In 2022, the percentage was 85.2% Protestant, 9.8% Catholic, and 4.9% Muslims.[1] Literacy rate was 95.74% in 2022, with male literacy rate slightly higher at 98.12% compared to female literacy rate at 93.45%.[1]

Economy edit

North Nias Regency has total GRDP valued at Rp3,875.07 billion in 2021.The regency is largely agrarian, with most industries both in value and employement dominated by farming, plantation, foresty, and fishing-related activities. Agriculture dominates the regency's economy with percentage of 52.25% in the same year, followed by trading and retail services at 11.91%, and construction sector at 9.47%. Economic growth was 2.02% in 2021, a slight increase from previous year's figure of 1.58%.

Agriculture and fishery edit

North Nias Regency has a large and diverse outputs from agriculture and fishery sector, due to it having fertile soil and as part of an island has many of its residents working as fishermen. Alasa, Lotu, and Namohalu Esiwa are the main food-producing districts of the regency, mainly in rice. The regency produced 51,194 tonnes of rice, from which Namohalu Esiwa produced 11,162 tonnes in 2022, followed by 10.945 tonnes from Lotu, and 6,435 tonnes from Alasa. Meanwhile, Tehumberua, Lahewa, and Sawo districts are the main fish-producing districts of the regency with respective fishery output of 4,550, 4,150, and 3,150 tonnes respectively. Other produce of the regency includes eggplants, chili, cabbages, and water spinach from Lahewa and East Lahewa.[1]

North Nias Regency also has significant amount of lands used for plantation, mainly coconut with 13,325 hectares and rubber with 35,295 hectares in 2022. In the same year, the regency produced 46,376 tonnes of dried coconuts 42,529 tonnes of rubber. [1]

Most of the livestock owned in the regency are mainly pigs and chickens, with population of 52,850 and 57,310 respectively on 2016.[3]

The regency is divided into eleven districts (kecamatan), tabulated below with their areas (in km2) and their populations at the 2020 Census,[4] together with the official estimates as at mid 2022.[1] The table also includes the locations of the district administrative centres, the number of administrative villages (totaling 112 rural desa and just one urban kelurahan) in each district, and its post code.

Infrastructure edit

The roads in the regency are all maintaned and managed by the regency government and have status as regency road. There is no provincial or national roads in the regency. Total length of the roads in the regency are 928.28 kilometers. Only around 531 kilometers are paved with asphalt and in good condition, while the rest are not paved and considered in bad condition.[1] The regency has ports such as Lahewa seaport located in Lahewa, with regular ferries to mainland Sumatra.[5] The regency has no airport and the closest airport is Binaka Airport in Gunungsitoli.[6]

The regency has 15 kindergartens, 166 elementary schools, 49 junior highschools, 15 senior highschools, and 23 vocational highschools. The regency also has one community college.[7] The regency has one hospital, North Nias Pratama Hospital, which is considered a D-class hospital by Ministry of Health. The hospital is located in Lotu and is a public hospital managed by the regency government.[8] Other than that, the regency has 50 puskesmas, 57 village health clinic, and 199 healthcare centers. In addition, there's one registered pharmacy which also located in Lotu.[1]

The regency has 30 mosques, 464 Protestant churches, and 116 Catholic churches.[1]
