World of Airports is a 2019 free-to-play mobile simulation video game developed by the Czech game-development company Flyboys.Games.[4] The game was released on iOS, and on Google Play for Android on October 23rd, 2019.[5][6]
The game features a list of real world airports from around the world where the player can select to control and manage airplanes as an air traffic controller. World of Airports tasks players to manage and operate an airport, handle planes, and keep general management of their own airline fleets to earn rewards and XP within the game, which can be used to unlock tokens (known as Silver/Gold planes), as well as different types of airplanes and airports that can be unlocked. Players can send contracts for planes to other real world players - which allows for a multiplayer experience for the game - where they can then land these planes for extra rewards or tokens. Airports level up over time, from 1-3 stars, ranging from Local, Regional, and International, where players are able to unlock longer routes and larger aircraft.[7]
World of Airports has released to the public with generally positive reviews from both players and critics, with over 10+ million downloads on both devices.[8][9]
Gameplay
editWorld of Airports is an online multiplayer game in which each player is an air traffic controller in a variety of different airports. Every player levels up their airports over time by landing and handling planes, opening contacts, and expanding the airport as a whole. Players gain XP through fully handling a plane, whilst managing a steady stream of takeoffs, and landings.
The airports included has slowly grown over time since the games initial release in 2019[10], and the ones currently seen in game are Innsbruck, Bari, Prague, Washington, Nagoya, San Diego, Muscat, Leipzig, Sint Maarten, London, and Sydney. As of October 2024, Bangkok is currently being developed.

Rumoured[13]
Most modern day civilian aircraft, along with cargo transportation, are featured within the game, with the smallest being the DHC-6 Twin Otter, and the largest being the Antonov 225. A multitude of aircraft from different manufacturers are featured within the game itself, including Boeing, Airbus, Embraer, and Bombardier. A notable exception to this is the Boeing 767, which is scheduled to release some time in the future, but not currently a part of the game.[14]
Other planes are featured, but are either military or postmodern planes. Some of these include the C-17 Globemaster, Concorde, and the Comet. Within the future, the developers plan to add more aircraft to the game, citing: "Other types of aircraft, including general aviation, military aviation, seaplanes and helicopters, though uncertain, may be put into the game." [15]
The gameplay was different back in the early days of the game. Some features included allowing the players the ability to speed up the handling of aircraft by holding down a button which would drain "Wollars" (the in-game currency) from the player's account, unlocking planes used silver or gold "keys" which allowed the player to get bigger and better planes, and airports would be unlocked after a certain amount of passengers in their unlocked airport were handled.
Development History
editWorld of Airports was developed during the course of 2019 by Flyboys, and founder Jakub Kadlec, based in Prague, Czechia.[16]
The game released to the public on both iOS and Android devices on October 23rd, 2019.[17] This was known as version 1.0, and released with a multitude of different airports to play, however, Sint Maarten, London Heathrow, and Sydney had not yet been added. Leipzig was not a part of the initial launch, but was added in a later update for 1.0. During the 1.0 development, New Orleans was scheduled to be added at some point, but was ultimately cancelled in development. It is unknown if it will be worked on again.
Throughout 2019 until 2023, 1.0 would be the standard version of the game that players could operate, with quality-of-life improvements and updates being made over time. Some examples were the remodelling of airports such as Prague, and the update of certain aircraft models, such as the Boeing 737 family and Embraer E170, E175, and E190 aircraft.
Version 2.0
editIn July 2023, Version 2.0 was released to the public, which completely overhauled the game's graphics, models and gameplay. A new airport was released with the update, that being Sint Maarten, which featured brand new models for the airport, and reworked models for aircraft such as the Boeing 777-300ER and Boeing 747-400. More aircraft such as the BCS1 and BCS3, Airbus A350 family, and Boeing 787 family were released a short time after the initial launch of 2.0, along with Heathrow, which was added in December 2023.[18] More airports and aircraft updates were added over time since the initial launch.
However, as a result of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, all Russian airlines that were present in the game during 1.0 were ultimately removed. Some examples of removed airlines are Aeroflot and S7 Airlines, which were both removed from the game upon 2.0's release.[19] The developers claim that there will be no Russian manufactured aircraft or Russian airlines added or re-added to the game until a complete withdrawal from Ukraine occurs.
As of October 2024, Bangkok is the next airport to be added, with more aircraft updates to follow shortly after.
