Home team

Shouldn't the home team be placed on the right side instead of the left? -- CoS 05:46, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

    • Well, to tell you the truth, I didn't really consider it that much, and I was actually going to put the home team second, but for the sake of moving games summaries easier, I decided to move about the order so it could make the switch to this template easier since the game summaries were in a home team first format already.

Use for minor league hockey

Hey I was wondering if there was any way to reformat this template for the AHL and ECHL playoffs, so all North American hockey league playoff results could be uniform?--Rik (talk) 02:34, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Well to say the least the ECHL playoff format is very wacky, only one of the two conference has a regular 8-team, best of 7 series playoff format to decide their finals representative while the other conference has one three game series, six best of five series, and four seven game series, so pretty much the template would need the ability to accommodate for at least a 3 game series, for example the three game series ended in two games and i tried to do that by only putting in two games but when i previewed it, the template was showing fill-in spots for games 3 and 4. If it's too much work for too little reward then don't worry about. Thanks though. --Rik (talk) 20:44, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

How are the home games delegated in the AHL and ECHL playoffs for 3 game series, 5 game series and 7 games series? My assumption would be Home-Away-Home for the 3 game series, Home-Home-Away-Away-Home for the 5 game series and same as the NHL for the 7 game series. Please let me know if this is correct, and if there are any other suggestions you have regarding this template, either for the ECHL, AHL or even the NHL playoffs. This years three game series was Away-Home-Home, three of the four five game series are Home-Home-Away-Away-Home with one series being Away-Away-Home-Home-Home, and the seven game series are Home-Home-Away-Away-Away-Home-Home. I'm thinking since your template uses the home arena to specify who is home and who is away, I think that would work just as well for the ECHL and AHL playoffs. The AHL in the past has had the top four teams from each division advance to the playoffs taking a look of Division Semis->Division Finals->Conference Finals->Calder Cup Finals, but I believe the AHL is using a new playoff system this year and I'll let you know how the new format works when I find out more. Okay, let me inform you of the changes I have made to facilate expanded usage of this template. First, you can limit the template to only two games now. Secondly, entering in the parameter home#, where #, and setting it equal to the team number will force the template to set home ice equal to that team number. Game 7 details problem

When goals & goalies are entered for Game 7 in the playoffs, the [show]-button becomes replaced with !style="font-size:85%"|. Just look at 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs#(1) Montreal Canadiens vs. (8) Boston Bruins. Any ideas why? Could it be fixed? lil2mas (talk) 23:36, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

4OT goalscorer problem

Why aren't Brenden Morrow's goal in 4th overtime period showing in 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs#(2) San Jose Sharks vs. (5) Dallas Stars? Something missing in the template, or should more periods with "No scoring" be applied in the game? lil2mas (talk) 06:41, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Here's the deal: no matter how many overtimes the actual game goes, you enter overtime scoring in the (game number)-4-(team number) parameter, rather than continuously going up. The ot(game number) parameter takes care of the titling of the overtime period. I have edited the section you are referring to show you what I mean. Thanks. —Sukh17 ^Talk 06:53, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Game Recap field

This is in response to issues brought up at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ice Hockey#Standardization / Use of Template:NHLPlayoffs:

Would it be possible to include a field where we could link to the "Game Recap" at NHL.com so that our focus when writing prose is on only the most important details of each round. Ideally, for games that have already been played this link would be placed in the same spot as the broadcast.

I don't know if placing two mutually exclusive fields in the same spot is technically possible. If not, we may want two nearly identical templates:

• Template:NHLPlayoffs, for completed series, which would include everything we have now, except with the Game Recap link in place of the broadcaster,
• and Template:NHLPlayoffsCurr (or something like that), for series in progress, which would be the template exactly as it is now.

This "Game Recap" field is currently provided for international tournaments, notably the 2008 IIHF World Championship. All other important statistical information (game summary, play-by-play, event summary, box score) are linked right at the top of each NHL.com "Recap" page. − Twas Now ( talk • contribs • e-mail ) 22:15, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

I've edited the template so now that inclusion of a recap parameter equal to the location of the summary online less the http:// portion will result in a external link titled Recap leading the aforementioned summary. I have edited the example on the template's main page to reflect this. I hope this helps with the standardization of this template across all NHL playoffs articles. Home Team Position question

There is a discussion on Talk:2010 Stanley Cup playoffs that correctly indicates that the home team in NHL hockey, and most North American sports, is represented on the right-hand-side. The template displays the home team on the left. Can this be changed please? --Walter Görlitz (talk) 04:01, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Actually, if you list the away team in an NHL series as "team1" and the home team in the series as "team2", and change all of the rest of the respective parameter values accordingly, the template will still function. The problem with changing the template right now is that it is being used on other articles besides NHL ones, like 2009 Gagarin Cup Finals, whose leagues may not also necessarily use the North American convention of listing the visiting team first. So either way, one is going to have to go through Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:NHLPlayoffs and double check all the articles listed there. Cheers. Zzyzx11 (talk) 05:28, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

The origin of the names of the parameters "team1" and "team2", along with the original style of this template, were based on {{IceHockeybox}}, which in turn was based on several sports match box templates that were first designed on other Wikipedias. So yes, originally "team1" meant the home team and "team2" the visitors, using the European convention. But after these templates were transwikied here to en.wikipedia, it made more sense to designate "team1" as the "team listed first on the left side", and vice versa for "team2", so they would be compatible to both European and US conventions.

Also, I just added a comment to Talk:2010 Stanley Cup playoffs, which may also be another reason that it might be better off to change the NHL articles directly if we want to maintain the style used in listing each goal scored. Zzyzx11 (talk) 05:36, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

What if the series goes to a third venue? Game one of the Ottawa 67's vs Sudbury Wolves series was at Scotiabank Place, not the Civic Centre, but that can't be incorporated. -- Earl Andrew - talk 04:32, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Stadium

2012-13 Realignment: New Template Format Needed?

Link describing changes With the announcement that the NHL will adopt a new 4-conference structure next season, with a new playoff structure, I'm assuming that we will have to redesign the template after this years playoffs. Thoughts, anyone? 142.207.79.101 (talk) 07:15, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

This template wouldn't be affected by the change. It just shows game results. If you are thinking about the bracket template, a new one would be made to fit the new format as has been done for past playoff formats. I would note that despite that article according to the press conference yesterday the playoff format hasn't been set yet. Use of hyphens instead of correct use of dashes

The actions of the dashes script seems to create a dysfunction of above script. It causes a disruption in functioning of 'hide' boxes where one lines of once-hidden text renders on-screen and several disappear completely. See this edit. Add optional stadium parameter for each individual game

In some leagues, such as the Swedish Hockey League, there are teams that have a secondary home arena where they may play playoff games because it's bigger or because the other one is unavailable. So my question is: Can we add an optional stadium parameter to each individual game? I think it's not appropriate to have the template write out incorrect stadiums for some of the games, only to have a note before or after the template that says "Game X was played here." 37KZ (talk) 14:13, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

Long asked for and done updates (for anyone who wants to go back and fix old problems)

@Corrector of Spelling, Sukh17, Walter Görlitz, Earl Andrew, Heymid, and 37KZ: Pinging all who have asked about this in the past decade. I have gone ahead and added parameters for automatically placing Team1 on the right-hand side of the table via use of the "homeright" parameter. Simply not using the parameter leaves the template in its current state so as to not break any uses of the template and keeps the European styling of home team on left intact. In addition, it has been asked for the option of non-primary game locations. That can now be implemented via the "altstadium#" parameter for each game. For anywhere this caused issues in the past, they can now be fixed using these parameters (little more complicated to update the homeright thing though as it could involve switching all the "1"s and "2"s in a template). Suppress show/hide

I noticed many articles are opting out of using the hidden space for scoring and period summaries/stats. Can we add a parameter to suppress the show/hide link that leads to nothing? For an example see the 2019 Stanley Cup Finals. Ping @Yosemiter:. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 20:26, 13 June 2019 (UTC)

@Coffeeandcrumbs: While it is not impossible to remove, it does take several #if statements for every game to account for every variable that can be used in the collapsible section. (ie, 1-1-1 or scoring1-1 can be used for scoring summaries = 2 #if statements. But then if goalie1-1 is used it will still show without the collapsible option = 2 more #ifs. etc.) Since the entire template is built around the pretense that it should be able to have sufficient content on the series, the backbone of the table is based on a collapsible format that currently does not have an option to not be used. It would be simpler to just make a new template or live with a link that does not affect usage (or even possible could lead to an outsider choosing to contribute). Additional overtime parameter

Is there a way without breaking the template to add a shootout to the 1-4-1 or 1-4-2 etc. parameters? For instance, I know that if you enter 1 into ot1 (|ot1=1) that it will yield first overtime period; so basically my idea is that if someone wrote SO in ot1 (ex. |ot1=SO) that it would produce Shootout instead of first overtime period. Changed. I actually procrastinated looking at the code until there was an actual shootout in the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs. If there was one last week during those exhibition games, I probably would have done it beforehand. Zzyzx11 (talk) 23:22, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

I have modified this change a bit to prevent a single quote mark from rendering instead of a generic "Overtime" when the |ot#= parameter is missing. An error-tracking category using {{main other}} could be added to that default text to track instances of this missing parameter. This error appears in the current version of 2014–15 Kazakhstan Hockey Championship if you want to test it. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:53, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

TV and time parameters

It's too bad that we cannot preserve the TV information for each game like the do on the NFL, NBA and MLB playoffs articles. Instead of having the recap link override it. Lost in the page history is how NBC divided the first and second round games between NBC, NBCSN, CNBC and USA; and how the CBC and TSN use to divide their games prior to today's Rogers/Sportsnet contract (see 16 May 2021 version of 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs and 16 April 2014 version of 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs). Similarly, this template also currently does not preserve the game's starting time, having the game score override it. And thus, this information is also lost, such as indicating the weekend afternoon playoff games for the past decade, or the several weekday afternoon games during the 2020 playoffs.
